To usher in GCSE results week, John and Sophie spent a delightful half hour chatting to Jennifer Halpin, Exams Team Leader at David Ross Education Trust, for a special summer episode of The Exam Man. In her role, Jen supports exams officers across the 11 secondaries at DRET, a team which includes one exams officer with 20 years' experience and also exams officers who are brand new to the role.

One of the most enlightening and entertaining things about running The Exam Man over the last year has been hearing all about how people have fallen into running exams, and what they were doing before. We've heard from a former Met police officer on the podcast, a tax officer... and someone who once crossed the Alps on a space hopper! Once exams officers are in post, though, there is large amount of churn and the retention crisis is real.

Nathan Burns is a renowned teacher educator, working with schools, education organisations and educators across the world to develop high-quality teaching practice. Working in a number of UK based schools, Nathan worked as a pastoral leader, More Able coordinator, metacognition lead, and lately, as a Head of Maths. During his time in the classroom, Nathan wrote two well received books on metacognition - Inspiring Deep Learning and Teaching Hacks - exploring how the theory can be effectively applied in the classroom. Since leaving the classroom, Nathan now leads high-quality professional development. He works with schools across the UK to deliver training on metacognition, alongside efforts with Teach First and Ambition Institute to train up the next generation of teachers. Nathan also leads Maths specific training for organisations including the Maths Hub, and you will often find Nathan presenting research at the latest teaching conference.

Graham has been involved in many of the significant developments in general qualifications, including the introduction of GCSEs, Curriculum 2000 and National Curriculum at Key Stage 4. At QCA he led a multi-million-pound development change programme involving all the regulatory bodies in the UK, looking at the uses of new technologies in assessment. Currently, Graham supports business development for organisations enabling the transition from paper-based assessment to digital delivery for many national and professional organisations. Graham is Chair of the e-Assessment Association, and in April 2021 he was appointed as a Board Member of Qualifications Wales, the regulator for all qualifications to university level in the nation.

John explains what he does to both prepare for and execute a successful summer exam season each year, with some words of wisdom about how to get ahead during the rest of the year, how to approach getting support when and where you need it, and how to mentally and physically manage your life as well as your role during the peak weeks. We discuss how running public exams in schools is a marathon not a sprint, and why we wouldn't necessarily recommend launching a weekly podcast just as an exam season dawns....

We were keen to learn more (anything!) about exams in the USA. Kelly gave us a whistle-stop tour of what exams pupils sit in the US, when and where they are optional (!), how they are administered, and the current challenges and opportunities with assessment in schools in the US from her perspective. It was fascinating to learn just how very different the exam systems are in the UK and USA, and our conversation with Kelly was incredibly thought-provoking.

Once we established that Sammy wasn't attempting to make John and all other exams officers redundant, we entered into a lively discussion about not just the purpose of exams, but also of school. We hear about what Sammy thinks about how we assess what students learn, what he thinks about technology and exams and he tells us what he hopes will come out of the upcoming Curriculum and Assessment Review.

Aside from offering up suggestions to the rather large question of 'what is school for?' the book is full of anecdotes about the minutiae of school life that will appeal to anyone who has been to school, has children at a school, or has a school near them. But it is especially interesting to those of us working in the world of exams and assessment- certainly food for thought!

Sammy Wright is Head of School at a large secondary in Sunderland. He sat on the government's Social Mobility Commission from 2018 to 2021. He has taught for twenty years at schools in Oxfordshire, London and the North East. His debut novel Fit won the Northern Book Prize.

In this conversation, John and Sophie chat to Headteacher Ruth McWeeney. Ruth leads Social Arts for Education, a small and innovative independent special school for up to 25 children aged 11- 19. The school is located in Eltham in the London borough of Greenwich, which happens to be around the corner from the house John grew up in.
