To usher in GCSE results week, John and Sophie spent a delightful half hour chatting to Jennifer Halpin, Exams Team Leader at David Ross Education Trust, for a special summer episode of The Exam Man. In her role, Jen supports exams officers across the 11 secondaries at DRET, a team which includes one exams officer with 20 years' experience and also exams officers who are brand new to the role.

Hear about how Jen's innovative role came about, what it involves on a day-to-day basis and what she loves about her unique role in exams. In this episode we also learn about the phenomenon of sleepwalking exams officers, how being an adrenaline junkie is critical, and why John loves working at midnight at this time of year. The very wise Jen had some great phrases that we are totally going to steal. Listen to her excellent advice on having a 'contingency mindset', and we loved her description of GCSE results day as 'the Christmas of exams'! How to create a podcast... and what we've learned.

The Exam Man podcast- despite originally being planned as a scrappy six- week event for the summer exam season- somehow reaches its first anniversary this week! Over the past year, thousands of colleagues around the world have tuned in every week to listen, learn, and connect. From episodes on every exam technicality and helping students prepare, to how exams run in the US and what on earth is 'special consideration', we've also heard from parents, students, teachers, policy makers, Headteachers, and very many exams officers, sharing their stories and wise words. The Exam Man has become a platform for deepening our shared knowledge of exams and assessment and appreciation for the people who run them, whilst having a whole lot of fun in the process. We've explored a large range of topics and now have a huge bank of free audio content to support anyone involved or interested in the business of exams- you can listen to all episodes and read our blogs at theexamman.com.

In this special anniversary episode- which also brings Season 3 to a close- John and Sophie Gaston focus on what they've learned about creating a podcast over the past 12 months, with lessons for others embarking on a similar endeavor.

A huge thank you to all our awesome guests and supporters, it has been a joy.

Understanding how exams run in prisons has been something that John and Sophie have wanted to cover on The Exam Man since the podcast began. It's taken a few months of conversations, approvals and sign offs, and we are delighted to launch Season 3 with a hugely thought- provoking interview with the Exams Officer at HMP Norwich. Geraldine Jozefiak has worked in the prison for the past 9 years, and she has a wealth of information and so much enthusiasm for the brilliant work she does. Geraldine is also a speaker for schools and conferences, where she shares her expertise on Managing Exam Stress, Mindfulness for Schools and Prison Education. With a passion for helping schools support their students, Geraldine develops practical resources to reduce exam anxiety and increase confidence. Her latest programme, the 'Exam Reaction Plan', launches Spring 2025, offering a thoughtful approach to managing exam pressure. You can contact Geraldine at: hello@geraldinejozefiak.com and download her free Exam Resilience Cheatsheet for schools at: https://www.geraldinejozefiak.com/exam-resilience-cheatsheet

All previous episodes and blogs from earlier seasons of The Exam Man can be found here: https://theexamman.com/

Hosted on Acast.

Metacognition is, essentially, thinking about one's thinking. This is certainly a pretty important skill for students as they approach exams, as well as for the people preparing them for them. In this week's episode, we speak to someone who fortunately has a more comprehensive explanation than us, and who tells us all about metacognition and its role in exams, assessment and revision.

Nathan Burns is a renowned teacher educator, working with schools, education organisations and educators across the world to develop high-quality teaching practice. Working in a number of UK based schools, Nathan worked as a pastoral leader, More Able coordinator, metacognition lead, and lately, as a Head of Maths. During his time in the classroom, Nathan wrote two well received books on metacognition - Inspiring Deep Learning and Teaching Hacks - exploring how the theory can be effectively applied in the classroom. Since leaving the classroom, Nathan now leads high-quality professional development.

It's been a big week for big chats about the move from pen-and-paper to digital exams, with several news articles describing the acceleration of online assessments and the plan for rollout by 2030. In response, there has been lots of discussion about the need for a cautious approach and plenty of questions about the infrastructure and cost implications. This week we delve into the debate, the pros and cons, and the likely path ahead. We are joined by Graham Hudson, a stalwart of the educational assessment community, who has worked in the sector for 35 years, to fill in our (many) blanks, and to give us some historical and current context to such issues.

Graham has been involved in many of the significant developments in general qualifications, including the introduction of GCSEs, Curriculum 2000 and National Curriculum at Key Stage 4. At QCA he led a multi-million-pound development change programme involving all the regulatory bodies in the UK, looking at the uses of new technologies in assessment. Currently, Graham supports business development for organisations enabling the transition from paper-based assessment to digital delivery for many national and professional organisations. They retell the story of how John's frustration with schools using big, expensive clocks and PowerPoints in exam halls led to a summer learning how to code, a seriously dramatic launch day, and what is now critical exam display tool that is familiar to hundreds of thousands of students in the UK and internationally.

This week we welcome our first author guest onto the podcast, Sammy Wright- how could we not, when he has written a book called 'Exam Nation'! The book has certainly made waves, with reviews in The Guardian and The Times amongst others, and it was Book of the Week on Radio 4 last month.

Once we established that Sammy wasn't attempting to make John and all other exams officers redundant, we entered into a lively discussion about not just the purpose of exams, but also of school. We hear about what Sammy thinks about how we assess what students learn, what he thinks about technology and exams and he tells us what he hopes will come out of the upcoming Curriculum and Assessment Review.

Aside from offering up suggestions to the rather large question of 'what is school for?' the book is full of anecdotes about the minutiae of school life that will appeal to anyone who has been to school, has children at a school, or has a school near them. But it is especially interesting to those of us working in the world of exams and assessment- certainly food for thought!

Sammy Wright is Head of School at a large secondary in Sunderland. He sat on the government's Social Mobility Commission from 2018 to 2021. He has taught for twenty years at schools in Oxfordshire, London and the North East.
