Pierre Poilievre did not have a good week. He ordered his caucus to vote against the update of a free trade deal with Ukraine - claimed it had something to do with his favourite political football that he can't stop kicking - the carbon tax...every conservative must swear allegiance to being opposed to the carbon tax even when the bill they are voting is as connected to the carbon tax as the Israel Hamas war is connected to pineapple juice...So Poilievre wasn't having a week trying to justify denying aid to Ukraine ....made him look like just a putrid Putin hand puppet and then there was the car accident on the American side of Niagara Falls. It happened during Question Period in the Commons and Poilievre insisted it was terrorism. Why does Fox say so? The following day when a Canadian Press journalist asked him about jumping the gun, he jumped on the journalist the way a sugar addict jumps on a bag of Reeses Pieces. Poilievre looked like a bully, like a jerk, like an insecure little man. Hard to believe that much insecurity in a person whose party is leading the governing Liberals by double digits. Poilievre's corps of sycophants is focused on media coverage of Poilievre's terrible week by claiming the media dogpiling dear leader because the government is subsidizing media and so the media hounds are gratefully licking their master. My master is the clock. My time is up.

A Ceasefire is needed now And after a ceasefire. a two state solution. Question: Do people pushing for this know anything? Jonathan Freedland writes columns for the Guardian in Great Britain. In recent days he decided to impart something that so many activists, slacktivists, academics, journalists and even western government officials seem to lack - Knowledge. If knowing things matters to you this is an opportunity to become aware of what is known by a very knowledgeable writer in the UK. Jonathan Freedland is speaking directly to those who argue that Hamas will abide by a ceasefire because Gaza has been so badly damaged by Israel. Multiple thousands of Palestinans are dead and much of Gaza is rubble. So why wouldn't Hamas change its tune and abide by a ceasefire. Freedland says Such thinking fundamentally misunderstands the nature of that organisation. Because Hamas is a different kind of enemy, one that does not fit the usual theories of war. Put simply, it does not mind if its own people die.

Recall how counter-terrorist strategists had to rethink all that they knew when first confronted with suicide bombers. It’s hard to deter a terrorist who does not fear death. That’s true writ large for an organisation that has explicitly said it is “proud to sacrifice martyrs”

This is why Hamas has spent hundreds of millions of dollars – much of it international aid money – not on basic services for Gazans, but on building and equipping a network of underground tunnels that, again, it has explicitly said are exclusively for its own use. As one Hamas leader put it, ordinary people in Gaza who need protection should look to the UN.

It’s this that explains why, whatever truth eventually emerges about the recent role of the al-Shifa hospital, a former director of a major aid organisation operating in Gaza testified this week that “it was broadly suspected/understood as far back as 2014 that Hamas used the al-Shifa hospital complex as a command centre and base for operations” – just as it has long been understood that Hamas is not afraid to use schools or UN buildings when it comes to raining rockets down on Israel. The calculation for Hamas is that either Israel hits back, killing innocents – thereby losing legitimacy in the eyes of the world – or it does not, thereby allowing Hamas to keep firing. Either way, Hamas wins.

And so when I was thinking of the veterans, I was thinking of a dream that's been recurring in my life ever since I can remember being alive. In the dream I am a much younger man, in a military cemetery in France. There is a shovel in my hand with freshly dug burial ground dirt. I am digging my own grave. I am bailing out of a life I should be grateful for, given to me my two wonderful people called Mum and Dad, who could never have met in 1951 had it not been for the heroes buried in the cemetery of my personal nightmare.

My buried heroes sacrificed themselves in World War II. A war against Fascism. A war where people of my heritage were targeted, where my parents were marked for death, forced to wear the Yellow Star and most likely bound for a cattle car journey to a place called Auschwitz . In 1944, over 434,000 Jews were deported on 147 trains, most of them on the 500 kilometer journey to Auschwitz in Nazi occupied Poland. 4 out of 5 were gassed. Before they were exterminated with a powerful insecticide, their living eyes met three words on the gates of Hell. Three words constituted one of Hitler's bushel of big lies. Three German words- Arbeit Macht Frei- translated into four English words. "Work Sets You Free." Unless of course you're too old or too young or too disabled to work. In that case you're hours away from being forced to inhale the pellets of Xyklon B Gas. Within moments your brain is as dead as cold shovel, and within hours your incinerated body, now in ashes, finds a chimney. Ashes to ashes.

The journey from Yellow Star to Chimney is one short journey that my so called sleep has seen thousands of times. Those scenes I just described happened in real life to many members of my extended family, who were rounded up by the forces of Totalitarian darkness in 1944, never to be seen again. Some were shot. Most were gassed. All had a strong work ethic, but nothing in their character could make those three words on the gates of Auschwitz ring true. And so by now you know that the younger version of this exhausted writer is me, in a cemetery in Northern France digging my grave, while remembering the heroes who fought for Canada and the UK and the USA and other countries to defeat Hitler and so my father and mother who were in the devil's waiting room, in end were spared the gas pellets. And because of my heroes, my parents stayed alive and ten years later, gave me life.

So here's to the veteran in your family, or your friend's family. Here's to the person whose heroic service helped many millions of families around the world including my own. How do I thank a veteran, alive or dead? By Remembering. In my life every day is Remembrance Day. It does not matter to me which day you choose to listen this message. But if it brings meaning to your life, I only ask that you pass it on to someone who might benefit from knowing the veteran in their family has the gratitude of many millions who they don't know, and one person who they now do know. The young man with the shovel is now a seasoned citizen of Canada with a keyboard, a microphone and a 7 word message. Thank you for the oxygen of life.

I saw the fact that I did survive as somewhat of a miracle. It would be a nice, clean story if I said I never did drugs again. But addiction is never nice and clean. I did go back to trying to clean up my life, and truthfully I backslid only a couple of times after that — and never as severely as on the night I thought might be my last.

I don’t think back on those days too often, but with Matthew Perry’s death, the memories have coiled around me because of how honest he was about his own addiction. I want to tell you something about addiction: No matter who it is or what substance that person is hooked on, loneliness is at its root. For whatever reason — and I have no theory as to why — there are those of us who feel isolated in this world, as if everyone else had some secret formula for getting along, for fitting in, and no one ever let us in on it. That loneliness resides deep inside us, at our core, and no matter how many people try to help us, no matter how many friends reach out, support us, show up for us, it never entirely goes away. It’s vast and shadowy and also part of who we are. Something happens when we discover a drug or alcohol: Suddenly we have a companion holding our hand, propping us up, making us feel we fit in, we can be part of the club. To say that Danielle Smith lies easily, casually and frequently is to repeat what someone said about her months before voters had a chance to reward the lies, which they did. I am that someone and for saying what I said, the truth, I have been called an evil socialist bastard and worse - much much worse.

Matthew Perry is dead at 54. Found drowned in a Jacuzzi at his California home. My friend Dean Blundell says Perry should be known for what he wanted to known for not the TV show he starred in, but the real show he struggled in - Alcohol addiction. 

My biggest takeaway from Perry’s memoir says Blundell, was his courage never to quit asking for help, no matter how deep he was. He never gave up on the idea of a happy, sober Matthew Perry. He perpetuated that courage while struggling to stay sober. By setting up a sober living house and helping countless friends into the same treatment facilities and meetings he’d frequent, Perry, who shunned the spotlight later in life, quietly went about living his courage by giving it out as a gift to those who needed his.

It’s the same for most of us. We get to a point where the misery outweighs the fleeting nature of booze (or drugs). We search for happiness and joy instead of a chemical experience and want to share those secrets with others. That’s what Matthew Perry spent the remaining years of his life doing. 

Someone needs to investigate why Pierre Poilievre isn't secure enough, hasn't yet applied for top security clearance. So he cannot view secret documents that are generally available to Canada's opposition leadership. I don't want to speculate on what skeletons may be in Pierre Poilievre's closet. There may be none. But his decision to steer clear of getting a top security clearance is odd and awkward and it's worth asking what a Prime Minister Poilievre would do if Justin Trudeau were in opposition and chose not to get top security clearance. Poilievre without a lick of evidence would drive Trudeau to the digital media slaughterhouse. 

Many so called Progressives are history's abominable apologists - No one will forget the stand many progressives did not take in the wake of October 7th. Instead of condemning beatings, burnings, beheadings & kidnappings they made excuses for the executioners of Hamas.

The government of Canada takes no such position. Scores of Liberal MPs actually want the Prime Minister to call for a ceasefire. Hamas Terrorists struck only two weeks ago today, October 7th, 2023 a day to borrow a former US President's words will live in infamy. The message that more than 20 Liberal MPs want Justin Trudeau to carry would live in insanity, some would say. Imagine telling the US to declare a ceasefire with Japan two weeks after Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 or a ceasefire with al-Quaida two weeks after September 11th, 2001. Canada's Prime Minister has a political problem on his hands. If the Conservative Party of Canada agrees with Canada's Ambassador to the United Nations and the Prime Minister is found equivocating on the biggest geopolitical event of this year, Canadians may view Poilievre as a better representative of Canadian values than the current Prime Minister. But I am now in the realm of speculation. I don;t know that Canadians want Hamas destroyed. I have no data to support that.

And Canadians may say Yes to the simple question do you want the terrorist organization destroyed but they may give a different answer if the question, Do you want Hamas destroyed even if the military operation to end Hamas may cost the lives of a hundred thousand Palestinians in Gaza? Tough times come with tough questions. This is not a video game. It's a real war, with real suffering and while Canadians can make judgements about Bob Rae and Justin Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre this war is not about them. But this war that Hamas started two weeks ago with the mass murder and torture and kidnapping of Israeli civilians is not anywhere close to a ceasefire and may not be anywhere close to one a month from now and possibly a year from now. There is no way of knowing today how many countries will get militarily involved in this war. But we do know now that what happened two weeks ago today in Israel, the Israeli equivalent of 15 Nine Elevens, what happened on October 7th, 2023 will never be forgotten - Never.

So Bruce Arthur is a Toronto Star writer I love to bring on the podcast. He made his bones in Sports but he has a great to deal to add to the dialogue of a nation. His most recent column is about The reason I wrote about Nate Erskine Smith, a Liberal MP who might be just the ticket for the leader of the Ontario Liberal party. Bruce says Erskine Smith is policy-obsessed and also lives in the real world and when we're having multiple crises, it might be a good thing to have an Ontario Premier who understands policy. Can't disagree with Bruce. The current populist premier is a train wreck on so many tracks. It would be better to have a premier who doesn't have populist contempt for people who know things, a Premier who isn't filling time with Hey Folks Hey Folks Hey Folks when he has nothing of substance to offer. 

Jim Jordan a Congressman from Ohio wants to have one of the most powerful positions in the world. Wants to be Speaker of the US House of Representatives. All money bills begin the House. Nothing can get done unless it's paid for. This is the House Jim Jordan wants to lead. In an interview with Dana Bash, Jordan says If Donald Trump wants to store classified material in a box in a bathroom, his bathroom he can do it." Jordan isn't fit to run a dog kennel. Hopefully Republicans will kennel him like they have their predecessors. Who let these dogs out? Donald Trump. We'll see if American justice will kennel America's wolf in wolf's clothing.

I see an evil one. Over the years, I’ve met gangsters here and there. This guy tries to be one, but he can’t quite pull it off. There’s such a thing as “honor among thieves.” Yes, even criminals usually have a sense of right and wrong. Whether they do the right thing or not is a different story — but — they have a moral code, however warped. Donald Trump does not. He’s a wannabe tough guy with no morals or ethics. No sense of right or wrong. No regard for anyone but himself — not the people he was supposed to lead and protect, not the people he does business with, not the people who follow him, blindly and loyally, not even the people who consider themselves his “friends.” He has contempt for all of them.

Confirmed by the Ministry of Defence in Israel. Israeli children we don't yet know precisely how many, were handcuffed, tortured and then slaughtered, some burned alive by Hamas terrorists. Question: what does one say when a father finds his 8 year old daughter, murdered by Hamas and is relieved to know she wasn't taken hostage by Hamas, to Gaza. That's how eight year old Emily's father feels about having lost Emily to terrorism 

For the last few years I have focused on how many on the right have polluted their minds - lost their way. Little did I know that one day Hamas would be burning & beheading Jewish children. Many on the left choose not to respond with empathy & indignation. They prefer Antisemitism. I don't have to tell them who they are.

And then there are the enablers of Hamas propaganda, like the leader of CUPE Ontario. I'm looking at you - ashamed of you and your enthusiastic willingness to be a useful idiot for Hamas by playing this sophomoric game where ends justify means, when they just don't. 

Germany's Chancellor Olaf Scholz says “At this moment, there is only one place for Germany — the place at Israel’s side. Our own history, our responsibility arising from the Holocaust, makes it a perpetual task for us to stand up for the security of the State of Israel.” Thank you very much German Chancellor Scholz. From my Saturday Free Press Column, I wrote about the great mistake the Manitoba PCs would be making if they drift further right. The Right Wing thing doesn't work in Winnipeg where 2/3 of the population lives. The Tories took only 3 out of 32 Winnipeg ridings and only won Tuxedo by 263 votes. I mention Tuxedo because the very reliable PC riding was was created 42 years ago. and has been held for nearly 23 years by Heather Stefanson, the person who will earn a footnote in history for being an elected Premier for nearly two years. Her riding bleeds blue. It has never been captured by another party. In the 10 elections up until this one, the PCs won every single time. The election math tells you that switching was going on everywhere from Tory Blue to NDP Orange. Winnipeg has 32 of the province’s 57 seats. On Oct. 3, the PCs took only three — barely more than 10 per cent. Call this year’s edition of the Manitoba PCs, “Ten per cent Tories.” The Manitoba Conservatives are at a crossroads. Go right or left. That's the choice. If they go right, they will deliver a string of governments to the Ndp. As I say in my column they will turn Premier Kinew into King Kinew.

Despite the Conservative Party's belief that CBC is a PR agency for Justin Trudeau, once again the public broadcaster is breaking a story that only brings embarrassment to the PM. The family's Easter vacay to Montana cost taxpayers a quarter of a million dollars, much more than the number that was reported by the PMO to Parliament.

The Blue Jays have now gone seven seasons without a winning a playoff game. On Wednesday night in the Twin Cities of Minnesota - the Jays got swept from the Wild Card round. No sane fan could be surprised. This fan of Major League Baseball. When I was kid Willie Mays Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle were alive. I have been a fan for well over a half a century. I am not a fan of faking excitement about making a wild card round, something the Jays have been able to do in four of the last five seasons - bowing out each time without winning a single game. The Jays are Baseball's version of the Leafs. They tease but they don't satisfy, they don't go all the way.

Former US President Jimmy Carter is celebrating a birthday many thought he would never see. A host of medical difficulties have seen Carter being moved to end-of-life care in a hospice. But the end, which is likely near, is not near enough to stop the former leader from celebrating his 99th birthday on this day, October 1st, 2023. Happy Birthday Jimmy Carter. 

The Blue Jays are in the playoffs, on the arduous road to the World Series. They have achieved a Wild Card berth by virtue of the Seattle Mariners losing to the Texas Rangers. This is the 3rd time in the last 4 years that the Jays have made it into the Wildcard Round. It has been a dead end for them every time. Toronto Fans hope this time may be different. If those words sound familiar to you it's because you hear them said every year about the Maple Leafs. Good luck Toronto.      

Some fellow Manitobans are asking me whether I am endorsing the Manitoba PCs in the Tuesday, October 3rd election. In my recent Free Press column I wrote a lot of things about an amateur trashy dog whistling useless campaign run by a party I have voted for numerous times. No, I am not endorsing them. As I wrote in my Free Press column, I now view the party of Duff Roblin as the party of Maxime Bernier. Au Revoir.

In the United States, Cassidy Hutchinson worked for top people in the Trump administration including his sleazebag chief of staff Mark Meadows who is among the many indicted in the January 6th attempted insurrection. Cassidy Hutchinson in her new book Trump chanted along with those at the stops of Capitol Hill, demanding to "hang Mike Pence." Trump was watching it all on live live TV. 2 years and nine months ago, and today the man who was enjoying watching a lynch mob assaulting police officers, destroying public property and threatening to hang his Vice President has the support of the overwhelming majority of Republican Primary Voters. Is the world over the edge, nut bar? The correct answer is yes, yes, yes, yes. "Hang Mike Pence" being said by a US President. Can that be true? Yes it can. 

House Speaker Anthony Rota. It was his office that mistakenly invited a 98 year old Nazi to the Press Gallery in the House of Commons. He continues to say he accepts responsibility but does not want to resign, but probably will because he will be pushed. This isn't Russia, so he won't be pushed out of a window. But he will be pushed. I don't think he has internalized the damage done to Canadian democracy's House. Perhaps he needs to read more about the mass murdering unit the 98 year old visitor was with. This was not an ordinary group of soldiers. These men were enthusiastic accomplices of genocide. He has said I'm sorry. It's not likely to be enough, and so a person whose name you never heard of will likely go back to being a nobody, still drawing a salary as a Member of Parliament, still eligible for a pension, but no longer the Speaker of the House. By the way, he's the 37th speaker we've had since this experiment called Canada began in 1867. Allow me to be the first to say goodbye, Mr. Speaker. Au Revoir. Adios!

Rats continue to leave the sinking ship known as Ford Government in Ontario. Monte McNaughton is the third cabinet minister in as many weeks to be leaving. The provincial Labour Minister says he want to go back to the private sector and his departure has nothing to do with politics. At one time McNaughton himself as a future premier, saw Doug Ford as the ticket to his ambitions. But McNaugton like so many others since the Greenbelt scandal took hold, now see a Ford ticket as a counterfeit ticket.

The hero of the Democratic world. Ukraine's President Zelenskyy was in Ottawa today, in Parliament. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying Canada is with Ukraine for the long run. 

And in the state of Georgia, former US President Jimmy Carter is in hospice care, end of life care, has been in a hospice now for seven months. His family expected him to be there for seven days. But he will soon be celebrating his 99th birthday there. His spirit is indomitable as he continues to fool modern medicine and survive a number of disorders against all odds. Some say one of the reasons he continues to survive is a desire to see the Atlanta Braves win the world series again. Good luck President Carter and Good luck to the Braves.

Canada is in a cold war with India. Prime Minister Trudeau has confirmed that Canadian authorities suspect the government of India was directly involved in the assassination of a Sikh leader in Surrey, BC. India's Prime Minister Modi is angry with Trudeau, has profusely denied the allegation and responded by expelling a Canadian diplomat. One of Modi's biggest boosters is Stephen Harper the former Canadian PM who is now the leader of an organization made up right wing leaders around the world including India's Modi, Hungary's Victor Orban and hear this clearly, Canada's Pierre Poilievre. If Canada's opposition leaders wants credibility on the int'l stage, he should get off the IDU stage that Harper stands on. Pierre Poilievre needs to tear up the Conservative Party's membership in Stephen Harper's IDU.

Inflation refuses to leave this nation. Gasoline costs are going higher - not lower and so Statistics Canada annual inflation rate rose to four per cent last month, up from 3.3 per cent in July - the inflation accelerating again because of the price at the pump.

The genius behind Tesla and Space X never seems like a genius when it comes to Twitter, now officially known as X. Elon Musk, who said recently that he will block users from blocking users- and no, it hasn't happened- now says he will charge a monthly fee for all users. And no, that won't happen either, because if it does, X will be deleted by the free market. And if it is, Elon Musk's ego hot tub will be drained by the hand that paid more than 44 Billion dollars to have it.

Homeowners are the true gatekeepers of our housing debate

In this episode you'll hear how Right-wing activists targeting school boards in Canada, the vulnerabilities in school boards across Canada, affecting social safety net.

How Conservatives view education as a key battlefield in their cultural or conservative politics, particularly around issues like LGBTQ acceptance and trans rights, along with education and political ideologies in Alberta. Max and Charles both warn progressives in Alberta of a potential conservative takeover of school boards. Also Max acknowledges that schools do promote inclusivity and diversity, but recognizes that some parents find this shift threatening.

They also discuss David Parker's views on schools teaching gender identity and Marxism are criticized as fear-mongering and a rejection of the modern world; along with discussion about the idea of "woke mind virus" and its supposed spread in schools, with Adler sharing a personal anecdote about a hypothetical 7-year-old daughter using the girls' washroom despite gender identity.

Later in the show, Max highlights the lack of resources for English as a second language (ESL) education is a systemic issue, impacting the advancement of both individual students and the entire education system as a whole. You will also hear about the importance of providing adequate support for immigrants, including healthcare, housing, and English as a second language training, to ensure a successful transition to life in Canada. Fawcett emphasizes the urgent need for the federal government to address the rental market, which is experiencing near-zero vacancy rates and skyrocketing prices due to a lack of supply; and notes that the voices of single-family homeowners in certain neighborhoods used to be powerful in the city, but are now starting to lose influence as the need for more housing options becomes more urgent.

That's the source of her funding, the source of her power. So it's not a great idea for her to be seen in a theatre groping a guy who is groping her groping a who runs a gay friendly nightclub with a lot of drag queen entertainment. I don't doubt that she's ok with it. I know I'm Ok with it. But I also know the Conservative Republican is not ok with their Angel being devilishly off message not in words, but deeds.

In Calgary, no adequate government response to the outbreak of E. coli in Calgary daycare centres - 190 cases - 27 children are in the hospital, of whom 20 have “severe illness.” Andre Picard Health columnist Globe and Mail writes Premier Danielle Smith and provincial Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange have been “sending thoughts and prayers” to parents. Whenever there is a powerful earthquake anywhere on the planet, the official death toll the first day is in the hundreds. The following day it's in the thousands and that's the case in Morocco. the 6.7 quake hit on Friday night. But by Saturday night the official death toll is 2000. How high it goes no one knows. So many are on the critical injury list right now and So many buildings have collapsed and no one knows how many people will be pulled from them alive and or dead. So many of the missing in villages in the Mountains near Marrakech, still virtually untouched by those souls in charge of rescue and recovery. They haven't had a quake this bad in a century in Morocco. 

In this country three CFL games on Saturday Sept 9. One was close Edmonton beating Calgary by 2 points. The other two were blowouts especially the one played in Winnipeg where Blue Bombers fans wanted vengeance against the Saskatchewan Roughriders who beat them a week earlier. The rally for revenge in the Banjo Bowl had more octane than usual because of the Rider Lineman did something nasty to Winnipeg's quarterback a week earlier, gave him a head butt, seconds after the play was dead. The CFl suspended the Saskatchewan player for just one game. Just one not enough for Winnipeg fans. Their team put more than 50 points on the board in the revenge round. And Saskatchewan only posted 6. 51 - 6 spells revenge in anybody's league anywhere.

US News and World Report issues a list every year of the best countries on the planet. Switzerland, number one this year. Number two, Canada. The US is five. Look, I get that some political people get mileage declaring Canada is broken, but it is not. The US magazine knows it. We know it. If Canada is broken at number two, what does that say about Sweden which comes in third? Australia that's number four? You want to look the Swedes and Aussies in the eye and tell them that they are broken? You'd only be embarrassing yourself. And I'm embarrassed for any Canadian who thinks our country is broken.

The Ombudsman in Ontario. His name was Paul Dubay. He's just released a devastating report. It says 750 Ontario seniors died during COVID. They died in care homes that lacked inspection by Doug Ford's government. They died in a system that collapsed. The Ombudsman says staff did not get the training required to support patients. 750 dead seniors, and the blood is on the hands of the provincial government.

Apple has a stock market problem. It shares are getting hammered because of a story out of China that says the Chinese government will ban government employees from using iPhones as their work phones.

The Bank of Canada say all who are in the know, know it's time to push pause on interest rates. The data seems to say the economy is too slow for more hiking and within a few months we will be talking about interest rates coming down instead of up. The interest rate escalator is about to move the other way, they say.

At the US Open Tennis match a fan got the toss because he uttered one of Hitler's favorite phrases. German Tennis sta Alexander Zverev complained told the Tennis umpire it was unacceptable. The Ump agreed and the fan was gone.

In Canada the criminal trial for the two most prominent Convoy organizers begins today. The Convoy took centre stage in the nation's capital two years ago. Justice does not move as fast as a transport. But it's moving today in Canada. Tamara Lich and Chris Barber facing charges which include obstructing police and intimidation of Parliament. 

On Twitter this week someone calling themselves the Real Ben, said I’m 34 years old, and I have lived in Canada my whole life. The freedom convoy was the first and only time in my life where I truly felt proud to be Canadian. It was the only time I had ever seen that kind of unity and purpose in the country - and it wasn’t for something dumb and meaningless like a sports game, it was for something that was real, something that actually mattered, something that actually affected peoples day to day lives.  I responded to the Real Ben ..saying I've lived in Canada for most of my life. Have never been more embarrassed to be Canadian. If honking horns, disturbing seniors, babies, and pets, fills you with pride, your gauge is running on empty. Good luck!

In the US Courts another member of the Far Right group known as the Proud Boys has been sentenced for his January 6th Crimes. Dominic Pezzola, who smashed a U.S. Capitol window with a stolen police shield, will be doing 10 years of hard time. His partner told the court Pezzola was getting drunk and watching Fox News and then described him in ugly, dirty vulgar ways that need not repeating for an audience that knows what vulgar means. The leader of the Proud Boys was sentenced early this week to 17 years in the Penn.

In Canada, a new poll suggests nearly half of Canadians are living pay cheque to pay cheque. Half the country is having anxiety about not being flush. Young people are most likely to be feeling broke. The political beneficiary is the Conservative party. The politics of financial anxiety have opened a flesh wound for the liberals. If things don't get better in the next 18 months it will morph into a mortal wound.

From the Wall Street Journal on this Friday September 1st the story behind the story of why Elon Musk bought and soiled Twitter. The Journal writes The way that Musk blustered into buying Twitter and renaming it X was a harbinger of the way he now runs it: impulsively and irreverently. It is an addictive playground for him. It has many of the attributes of a school yard, including taunting and bullying. But in the case of Twitter, the clever kids win followers; they don’t get pushed down the steps and beaten, like Musk was as a kid. Owning it would allow him to become king of the school yard.

This week Canada's Small Business Minister Rechie Valdez wasn't endorsing gambling. But she was endorsing lobster and oysters- sea food in Atlantic Canada. Small businesses sell it. The minister of small business was eating it and promoting it. What's the big deal? Social media was detonated. Susan Delacourt writes, There is a whole constituency out there in Canada who greets every move from federal politicians with the rejoinder: “If I can’t afford it, you can’t have it.”

What do I think? I think populism is engineered to appeal to people who are low info, and low class. I think communicators and politicians put on their populist bear suits in public and can't wait to get them off when the cameras and microphones are off. There is no phonier "-ism" in politics than populism.

Category 4 is definition of imminent danger when it come to hurricanes. Hurricane Idalia is now a Cat 4, headed for the Florida panhandle--in the Big Bend region. There will be lots of wind, rain and storm surge. Deaths and injuries will be minimal compared to other Hurricanes. Relative to Florida's large population in the south west and southeast, Big Bend in the Northwest is not big with people.

And from Department of Here we Go Again, the BC Centre for Disease Control has detected Canada’s first known case of a new COVID-19 variant that has swiftly circled the planet and is back. How big will it be? A two word answer that does not satisfy anyone, including me: Nobody knows. Nobody knows how big COVID the Sequel will be.

Baber is exploiting the death of Sheila Lewis in Alberta who was on the transplant list but took herself off the list when she would not do what all transplant candidates are required to do and be up to date on all vaccinations including those for Covid 19. That's part of the transplant protocol to ensure that everyone who gets a living a organ gives themselves the best chance of living. Conservatives have embraced brain dead anti vax political serum and so Baber is blaming her death on today's medical ethics. Polievere has endorsed Baber's message. If the Conservatives had ethics candidates like Baber wouldn't be running for and leaders like Poilievre wouldn't be endorsing them.

Lou Diamond Phillips is a tremendous actor who played the part of Standing Bear in one of the best of those series that have been watched by millions who stream. The show was Longmire. Phillips will always be best known for La Bamba, a movie made 4 decades ago based on a song recorded by the late Richie Valenz. Lou Diamond Phillips lived on the same street as Bob Barker who died Saturday at the age of 99. I Was lucky enough to be Bob Barker’s neighbor for a while, said Phillips. Would often chat with him when he was walking his dogs. What a consummate gentleman and tireless advocate for animals. What an epic run you had, sir. Rest in Peace Legend.

What does it mean that Donald Trump has now been criminally indicted for a fourth time? In a rational world, it means a lot. In the world we share, it's just another day in the life. The 4th indictment came with a mug shot. In it, he looks defiant and dedicated to running for President again. What will stop him? A speeding locomotive? No. Ultimately the only thing that stops Donald Trump from re-entering the oval office is a democratic decision made not by a judge and jury in Atlanta, or Washington, or Palm Beach. Ultimately the jury known as the electoral college will or won't stop Trump from being the most powerful person in the world - again.

A different President of a different organization refuses to resign.

The president of the Spanish soccer federation Luis Rubiales says he is staying put as President despite enormous blow back for having kissed a player on the lips without her consent after the Women's World Cup final.

Luis Rubiales told an emergency general assembly of the federation, "I won't resign," four times in quick succession and claimed he was a victim of a witch hunt by "false feminists." Rubiales kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the award ceremony after Spain beat England in the final in the land down under.

Don't look now. But China is slowing down. The world's second largest economy - not to mention a very important customer to many countries around the world including Canada is slowing down. China is much too big to fail. But world markets are paying attention. It's affecting stock markets in Asia Europe the US and Canada and it's also dampening the Oil market. I don't want to turn this feature into a data dump. But I will tell you that unemployment among the young in China is above 21 percent - highly elevated for any orderly society. History informs us that nothing brings disorder faster than millions of bored out of work and hungry young people.

In this country the PM and his wife and kids are on vacay - together - an issue for some after the recently announced decision of a separation agreement in their marriage. Should separating couples take vacations with the children asks the Ottawa Citizen, a once respected Canadian newspaper.

Are we turning into a nation of slobs? Blame the Pandemic. That's what most professional observers do. But the truth it started long before Covid-19 became public enemy number one to the Human Race. Gus Carlson writes about the slobification of dress codes in the Globe and Mail- says during the dot-com era, many businesses moved to all casual, all the time. Along with climbing walls, nap rooms and doggie relief areas, dot-com offices were environments where shorts and flip-flops were acceptable – even encouraged.

The casualization of the workplace evolved over the next two decades, with more businesses relaxing rules. With the pandemic, it dropped off a cliff.

News from Italy today tells us forty-one migrants are thought to have died in a shipwreck last week in the central Mediterranean. It was a seven metre boat carrying 45 people from Tunisia. Yes I said 4th. For years Democrats ran against him calling him a person who behaves like a criminal. In the next election they will likely be calling him a convicted criminal. Canadians ask how can a criminal run for President. Many Americans respond, Why is that even a question, in the Land of the Free -The home of the brave.

And so Canadians everywhere on the Political spectrum are saying we are proud not to have you as a Canadian, Piers Morgan. “I never thought I would agree with this toxic windbag on a single issue,” says NDP MP Charlie Angus. “But here, I stand with Piers says Charlie.. Stay the hell out of Canada mate.”

By the way "Barbie" has now earned more than $1 billion at the box office, breaking a record for female directors that was previously held by Patty Jenkins, who directed “Wonder Woman.” The female director of Barbie is Greta Gerwig. If you still watch Oscar you will see her there.

A Ukrainian woman and we don't yet know her name was part of a plot aimed at assassinating Zelenskyy the President of Ukraine during his visit last week to Mykolaiv, a southeastern city near the front. The woman has been detained by Ukrainian authorities.

Australia's Angie Karan has posted a photo of a young woman holding a hunting rifle, smiling broadly, her foot on the corpse of a freshly killed Giraffe. Her father is is in the photo looking so proud of his daughter. Karen writes A brainwashed child slaughtered this beautiful giraffe just for fun encouraged by her psychopath father who is a trophy hunter. To teach a child to be cruel towards defenseless animals should be treated as a case of child abuse. Who can disagree with that? Too many, apparently. In support of Angie Karan I want to say that Manipulating a child to receive pleasure from the destruction of an innocent animal, vividly illustrates that the notion of human superiority is palpably false. 

What's palpably true is that one of the best movies every made was launched on this day August 7th, 31 years ago. Unforgiven was an unbelievably good Western, shot in Canada, with Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman. It won best picture and best director, for Clint Eastwood. He played an aging retired outlaw and killer who had one more act left in him as Bill Munny. And yes the movie made big money at the Box Office. You will not be forgiven if you don't watch Unforgiven at least once. I have watched it at least a dozen times. My only problem with it is the scenery makes me homesick for Southern Alberta. Two weeks ago in Belleville, Ontario, Justin Trudeau was called a traitor and a criminal and a pedophile. And don't tell me that doesn't strain a marriage. Don't tell me that it's something that's easy to discuss for the mother of his children with his children. Much more on Parental Anguish and separation and D I V O R C E in my Free Press column. And I do hope no mother is ever asked by a 9 year old. Why are they calling Pop a pedolphile?

From the New York Times, columnist Maureen Dowd reminds us that there is a reason many Republicans don't take Trump's court cases seriously. Many Republicans see Joe Biden as illegitimate president? How many? CNN says 69% of Republicans and those who lean in that direction believe the election was stolen by the Democrats. More than half say there is evidence of that. I can tell you there isn't because I can tell if there was, there are billions of dollars in dark money available to any sleuth who could provide the truth of something that is palpably untrue.

A provocative title in the Calgary Herald for a Don Braid column. UCP declares a moratorium for Alberta's reputation. This is about the Danielle Smith government putting on hold all new projects in the alternative energy space, specifically solar and wind. Hard to believe the government would try to put a roadblock in front of the billions of dollars companies want to invest in Alberta developing new energy. But old voters in those old rural ridings don't like the word new energy - feel threatened by them. And Danielle Smith feels politically vulnerable when her base, Rural Albertans raise their pitchforks. There is reputational damage to Alberta. How can there not be, when Alberta always sells itself as a place where opportunity is never met with hostility.

Character Actor Mark Margolis has died. You may say the name doesn't ring bell. So I will ring two bells. Hector Salamanca in Breaking Bad - Bell number one and Better Call Saul. Bell number two. He played the role of a Cartel leader, felled by a stroke, who needed a wheelchair. Margolis also had roles in Oz and Ace Ventura. It was a short illness ending in a New York City hospital, said his family. The person will always think of as Hector Salamanca, was 83. I'm Charles Adler with 3 minutes that matter.

Some never thought they would ever see this story in the Energy Capital of Canada, Alberta. But the Danielle Smith government has decided to push the pause button on all approvals for new wind and solar projects. If the federal government had the authority to do this and did this, the Smith would pounce on Ottawa like a Panther during the dinner hour.

Mariupol, was a beautiful Ukrainian city until Putin's forces rocketed, smashed and burned it. It is currently occupied territory. Ukrainian partisans got into the kitchen of a party for 20 of the occupying Russian officers-Seasoned their food with cyanide. Two are dead. The rest are fighting death in a hospital.

The Canadian economy lost jobs July- 6,400 jobs and the unemployment rate rose to 5.5 per cent from 5.4 per cent in June. Bay Street analysts were expecting a gain of 21,100 jobs last month. What does this mean? It could mean interest rates which have been rising could begin declining - one would hope. The National Unemployment rate is up one tenth of a point at 5.5 percent

Telus is a Canadian Telecommunications Community based in Vancouver-employs more than110,000 Canadians. By the end of this year that number will be downsized by 6 thousand. Telus says it needs to happen for them to stay competitive.

Mike Pence's testimony will be key in the trial involving Donald Trump and associates which as yet are unnamed by the court but thought to include Rudy Giuliani, who makes that clear by things he says publicly. The former mayor of New York and for awhile a Donald Trump lawyer, says the former Vice President Pence is on a dog leash held by his wife and the only place the dog is allowed to go without her is the washroom. To my experienced eye it looks like Guiliani will need a barrel of Drano bigger than the Oval Office to clean the stain of the bowl his future is circling in. I am thankful to Twitter or X. I don't have to go to Insomnia News Talk on TV to get what I need. CNN's Kaitlan Collins interviewing Bill Barr, Donald Trump's last Attorney General. Collins asking him whether he spoke to investigators for the Special Prosecutor Jack Smith and Barr snaps. I'm not getting into that. But while his words didn't go there, his body language was screaming only one message. Of course, I spoke to him. Of course, I gave him what he wanted. Of course, I did what any sane human being does if they want to stay in the good books with a guy who can put them in Leavenworth. I sang like an Opera Singer. I sang like Pavarotti.

Media pros in Canada appear to be leaving the Trudeaus alone. A good thing. Tough enough for any couple especially one in the public eye to admit that after 18 yrs and three young children, they're cutting the cake in half. It was 55 years ago that Tammy Wynette went number one with D I V O R C E.....it was a word that was publicly not even spoken on many platforms.

The country had to spell it to keep it in radio airplay. Much has changed in 55 years and much hasn't.Inflation is a problem in Canada. But the numbers show we are doing better than everyone else in the G-7. Who knows this? People who read. Who doesn't this 87% of Canadians, says David Coletto...Abacus Polling. Most people don't know that we have it good in Canada compared to almost any other country in the world. I wonder if reading would make us happier. The big fish he can give them is his boss, the former President of the United States. If he can tell a grand jury and then a trial jury that Donald Trump told him to wipe a server containing important surveillance footage, then the Prosecutor has the President where he wants him - not just committing a crime but giving the jury the proof that he knew what he was doing was criminal. The biggest burden on every prosecution is proving the accused had a criminal mindset, knew that what they were doing was wrong-criminally wrong. Every jury member is expected to know that Donald Trump wasn't trying to get rid of evidence that little green men from Mars were planting evidence to incriminated him.

The destroyed surveillance footage wouldn't be of FBI agents planting evidence. It would have to be connected to Trump and that's why Trump would have told Carlos De Oliveira to get rid of it. The uncomfortable truth for Trump fans is that this may be the lynch pin that puts Trump in the pen. But just because it's uncomfortable doesn't make it untrue. Have straight people been shunned by their own fathers for being too straight? Straight pride is not about being straight. Straight pride is straight homophobia. It's about mocking people who are not straight. That's what it's about. mocking them losing them hating them. It's not about a stupid t shirt. It's about a hateful slogan. So my answer to those people who are asking me whether I'm ashamed of being straight, maybe I'm in the in the closet. I had to come out. By the way, has anyone ever stayed in a closet? For being too straight? Has anybody heed who they were? Because of who they were?

Like, I don't want to hide the truth from you because we call this segment the uncomfortable truth and it is uncomfortable. If you're phobic. If you hate gay men. Go ahead. Think of me as one. If you hate Muslims, think of me as Muslim. If you hate Trudeau, think of me the way you do the PM. You hate women. Think of me as a woman. I play for a team. Alright. I play for the human team. And I support human rights. And if you think of that is just too liberal. Well go ahead and think of me as your liberal. That's the truth. For homophobes. It's the uncomfortable truth. But that doesn't make it untrue.
