The author argues that the exegesis of St. Augustine, while valuable, does not necessarily support a non-literal interpretation of Genesis, as many have claimed. Specifically, the author contends that St. Augustine's understanding of the six days of creation was based on his belief in a simultaneous creation, a belief the author argues was grounded in a misunderstanding of the biblical text. The author ultimately concludes that the literal interpretation of Genesis is not at odds with reason and that the Church Fathers, including St. Augustine, would have agreed with this interpretation.

Hosted on Acast.
The text is a collection of excerpts from a book that explores the relationship between Catholicism, history, and the prophecies of the end times. The author examines a series of prophecies from various saints and Church Fathers concerning the coming of a great monarch, the restoration of Christianity, and the eventual rise of the Antichrist. The author argues that these prophecies offer hope and insight into the future, but also emphasize the importance of personal holiness and consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary as a means of resisting evil and preparing for the coming era of peace.

Hosted on Acast.
Exploring the historical and theological foundations of Christianity. It focuses on the divine inspiration of the Bible, the existence of God as a Trinity, and the importance of the Virgin Mary in God's plan of salvation. The author argues that the Bible is historically accurate and that God's existence can be supported by reason, logic, and historical events. The text also emphasizes the role of the Catholic Church as an authoritative interpreter of Scripture and a source of truth.

Deep Dive into Book by Hugh Owen "Love, lost and found"

Foreword of the book

This book will most likely fall into the hands of three categories of readers: Catholic true believers, qualified believers, and skeptical non-believers.

If you are in the first category, the Catholic true believers, you need only to know that your Heavenly Father has revealed the true origin of man and the universe and the early history of the world in the book of Genesis. You know that He spoke the world into existence through His Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. You know that He knows everything, that He made everything for you out of love, and that He wants you to know your place in space and time to confirm that you are the apple of His eye. You do not need to be shown the fatal flaws in the evolutionary myths and long-age chronologies that purport to be derived from scientific observation. Your Heavenly Father has confirmed the true age and history of the world in His revelation as it was understood in His Church from the beginning, and that is enough for you. The only reason why you want to know the fatal flaws in the “scientific” arguments used to refute the Biblical history of the world is so that you can help your skeptical brothers and sisters to obtain the child-like supernatural faith that God has given you.

If you are in the second category, a qualified believer, you believe in God and in the fundamental truths of Christianity, but you have been led to believe that the age of the universe is not a matter of fundamental importance. You believe that the Bible is the Word of God, but you believe that natural science has progressed far beyond the level it had reached among the Hebrews in Old Testament times or among the Apostles and Church Fathers. Consequently, God adapted His revelation regarding Creation to the cultural level of His audience and inspired His believers to pursue the study of nature so that they would eventually discover the laws and constitution of the natural world, including the right understanding of the age and development of the universe.

If you are in the third category, a skeptical non-believer, you regard the Biblical chronology of the world as an artifact of a primitive pre-scientific period in human history, long before the scientific disciplines of geology, biology, and astronomy made it possible to determine the age and development of the cosmos with accuracy, without having recourse to any but natural causes to explain the origins of man and the universe. Perhaps you are only reading this book to humor a Christian friend, to satisfy your curiosity, or to see how easily you can refute its claims.

My brother or sister, whoever you are, may God who is the Way, the Truth and the Life, open your mind to receive and believe the Truth about your sacred heritage, for His glory, for the good of your soul and of all souls, and for the coming of His Kingdom “on earth as it is in Heaven”!

Hosted on Acast.

St. Augustine's Confessions, Book XII explores the creation story from the first chapter of Genesis. Augustine investigates the meaning of the statement "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" in light of his understanding of God's eternal nature and the concept of formless matter. He examines the complexities of the text, considers different interpretations, and ultimately emphasizes the importance of charity and unity in approaching the Scriptures.
This excerpt from The Confessions by Saint Augustine explores Augustine’s struggle to comprehend the nature of time and its relation to God's eternal existence. Augustine seeks to understand how God, who is outside of time, could have created the world, questioning how God acted before the world's creation. He examines the concepts of past, present and future, arguing that these are simply different perceptions of time within the human mind. Through a series of reflections, Augustine grapples with the complexities of divine timelessness and the human experience of time, ultimately affirming that God is beyond human comprehension.

Hosted on Acast. Augustine reflects upon his journey towards God, exploring the nature of memory, the various temptations he encounters, and the necessity of God's grace for salvation. He details his struggles with physical desires, intellectual curiosity, and the desire for human praise, ultimately coming to a profound understanding of the role of Jesus Christ as the true mediator between God and humankind.
St. Augustine's Confessions is a personal account of his spiritual journey, exploring the philosophical and theological questions that troubled him during his youth. In Book VII, Augustine grapples with the problem of evil, seeking to understand its origin and reconcile it with his belief in a good and immutable God. He rejects Manichaeism, a dualistic philosophy that posited two opposing forces, and considers alternative explanations, including the role of free will and the corruptibility of creation. He also reflects on the influence of Platonic thought, comparing its insights to the more complete revelation found in Christian scriptures. Ultimately, Augustine finds solace and direction in the teachings of Jesus Christ, acknowledging His role as the mediator between God and humanity.

Hosted on Acast. He recounts the influential role of his mother, Monica, and his friendship with Alypius and Nebridius, both of whom were significant figures in Augustine's journey toward Christianity. The text explores themes of faith, doubt, the nature of happiness, and the temptations of the world, ultimately offering a compelling narrative of Augustine's personal transformation.

Hosted on Acast.
St. Augustine's Confessions, Book V recounts the period when Augustine was 29 years old. During this time, he was exposed to the teachings of the Manicheans but ultimately rejected their doctrines. Augustine was particularly impressed with Faustus, a Manichean bishop known for his eloquence, but he came to realise that Faustus lacked knowledge in the liberal arts and was not able to provide answers to his questions about the universe. Augustine found himself attracted to the teachings of the Academics, who questioned the possibility of knowing truth, and he began to doubt the Manichean teachings. He also found himself drawn to the Catholic faith, particularly through the sermons of the Bishop Ambrose, but he still harboured doubts about the Incarnation and the validity of the Bible. Ultimately, Augustine decided to become a catechumen in the Catholic Church while he continued to search for the truth.

Hosted on Acast. In this excerpt, Augustine reflects on his early life, specifically his childhood and boyhood, and the influence of God in his development. He explores his fascination with the Latin language and the allure of play, contrasting these with the more rigorous learning he was compelled to undergo. He grapples with the impact of traditional education on his understanding of God, acknowledging the contradictions he finds between the world of mythology and the teachings of Christianity. Ultimately, he expresses gratitude for the gifts God has bestowed upon him, even during the period of his childhood, and he seeks divine guidance to direct his life towards a path of true faith and understanding.

Hosted on Acast.
This text is an excerpt from the Breviloquium, a work by St. Bonaventure, a 13th-century Franciscan philosopher and theologian. In this excerpt, Bonaventure explains his understanding of God's creation of the universe, beginning with the Trinity and moving through the creation of physical nature, angels, and ultimately humanity. Bonaventure's approach is deeply rooted in the Bible and the writings of other theologians, particularly Saint Augustine, and he uses this framework to explain the order and purpose of creation. He argues that all creation reflects God, from the material world to angels and humans, and that the universe exists to lead humanity towards a loving relationship with God. Bonaventure uses a system of metaphors and imagery, such as the "book of creatures" and "the book of scripture", to illustrate his arguments and guide the reader towards a deeper understanding of God's creation.

Hosted on Acast.
This text is a collection of excerpts from On the Making of Man, a work by St. Gregory of Nyssa, a 4th-century Church Father. The text explores the creation of man in the image of God, examining his nature, his relationship to the world, and his fall from grace. It particularly focuses on the structure and function of the human body, the nature of the soul, and the doctrine of the resurrection. Gregory rejects the idea of pre-existing souls and argues that both soul and body come into being together, potentially in the Divine will and actually at the moment of conception. He further emphasizes the role of reason in distinguishing man from the animal world, while also exploring the sources of human passions and their relationship to the irrational nature. The text concludes with a discussion of the possibility of resurrection, drawing parallels from the natural world to support the argument for the restoration of human nature to its original state of glory.

Hosted on Acast.
