Although proactive and willing to have hard, end-of-life conversations with her mom, Pipkin still found the loss devastatingly powerful. Strangely, it was in her grief that she experienced transformation prepared by a loving God who stayed with her. He is the great caregiver, and when we learn to be still with Him and accept His care, it changes us, and the way we chose to live moving forward.

A CHALLENGE: Can You Answer This Question? (151)

If we go anywhere, we see needs around us, but can we see the opportunity in the need? Matt Bronleewe is an author, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and a filmmaker, but it was the life of another man that altered Bronleewe’s focus. Discovering, around the kitchen table, that his in-laws were closely related to the founder of Compassion International, Bronleewe found himself intrigued by their stories of “Uncle Everett.” In 1952, Everett Swanson, without the aid of social media or the Internet, managed to rally an army of people to support children and individuals who were a world away. A traveling, revival preacher out of Chicago, Swanson was not wealthy, or a diplomat with global connections, he was just a God-fearing man who, after seeing a need, was asked this probing question by a fellow traveler, “Now that you have seen the need and the opportunity, what are you going to do about it?” It’s a question that we all should answer.

Why did God give us art? Academic and author of over a dozen books, Terry Glaspey refers to himself not as a doctor or teacher, but as a student. Earning his doctorate in Spiritual Formation, Glaspey studies the Word of God and individuals who truthfully and artfully present God. It was when reading C.S. Lewis that Glaspey had a vibrant awakening. Riveted by Lewis’ practical yet creative understanding of God, Glaspey noted a strong parallel. Jesus expressed truth through parables; C.S. Lewis did the same in books like The Chronicles of Narnia. Glaspey calls them “Truth Bombs”: Art, music, or narrative that presents truth in a fresh, memorable way, probing even the soul. God’s call on Glaspey’s life is to introduce people to great writers, artists, and musicians so that they may see the Master. For in His hands, art is a tool that penetrates hearts with mysteries from heaven, transforming us with the passion of the Creator. Imagine what God wants to do with you!

Transforming the Brokenness from Human Trafficking: A Survivor’s Message (146)

“Why?” We have all asked it. “Why would God allow…?” For those in the middle of trial or trauma, it confuses. For those who have been damaged, it haunts. For Ofelia Flores, it reminds her, “God does not waste any hurts.” An advocate, contracted consultant for police and sheriff’s departments, speaker, and survivor, Flores was introduced to heroin by family members, and trafficked by the age of 16. She was just done after two years of living in darkness and despair, holding out for the next hit. In desperation, she shot up the last of her heroin, walked into the Sheriff’s office, and asked for help. Today, Flores helps those dealing with the same hurt and shame she felt for years. Are You Sinking or Walking on Water? (138)

Does fear impact your ability to function at times? Kristel Ward is an author, speaker, podcast host, and teacher who, having taught in some rough districts, felt she could handle the toughest situations. Then her youngest son began having daily seizures. Suddenly, Ward’s confidence was replaced with fear, and her hope dissolved. She was struck by how quickly she could spiral into that dark place of all-consuming anxiety even as a Christian. God used His Word to remind her that when all you have is Jesus, He is enough. The Lord impressed upon her anxious heart that the same Jesus who saved Peter from drowning, as he attempted to walk in faith, was the Jesus who was there for her when she felt submerged in fear and hopelessness. Be reminded that as Christians, when we lose our footing and our hope to fear or anxiety, we can let ourselves sink deeper or do as Peter and fix our eyes on Jesus and call out, “Lord, save me!” His hand is always extended.

Caught by surprise and suffering massive casualties, Steinberg describes the inhumane and immoral work of Hamas but is also quick to point to the hope and resilience formed in the heart of the Israeli people by a covenant-making and covenant-keeping God. Ever heard the phrase, Sometimes the hardest part to starting something new is showing up? Tony Phillips is a guy who showed up. A businessman between jobs, it was a need for volunteer help that captured Phillips’ attention. His love for people drew him to a community ministry ' that supports young kids. Even when his new job made volunteering difficult, he persevered, staying connected, showing up, loving those kids, and being ready to do whatever was needed because he knew God had a plan. That plan included a broken-down warehouse located across the street from the prison, a local ministry, and Phillips, a fitness fanatic. Today God uses Phillips as His liaison to any ex-prisoners who dare to cross the street. Phillips, a physical force to be reckoned with, introduces them to God through workouts at his gym and through work at the warehouse that provides churches with goods to help needy families. Whether they work out together or wind up serving others together, they all hear about the God who redeems, restores and blesses when we show up.
