In May 1932, police forced open the door to a small apartment in Stockholm’s Atlas district. Inside lay the body of 32-year-old Lilly Lindeström, a sex worker last seen on Walpurgis Night. She had been bludgeoned to death during a sexual encounter, but the scene held something far stranger: her body had been drained of blood, and a gravy ladle smeared with it lay nearby. Newspapers dubbed the unknown killer the “Atlas Vampire,” and though police interviewed every client and acquaintance they could find, no one was ever charged. In the 1930s, reports began to circulate across Europe of a song so mournful it was said to drive listeners to suicide. From Budapest to London, victims were found with sheet music in their hands, gramophones still spinning the tune, or notes quoting its lyrics. The song was Szomorú Vasárnap – “Gloomy Sunday” – written by struggling Hungarian pianist Rezső Seress after a heartbreak.

In February 1997, a man named Mel Waters phoned into Coast to Coast AM with a story so strange it would become one of the program’s most infamous legends. On his rural property near Ellensburg, Washington, Mel claimed there was a mysterious pit – a hole with no bottom. He said he had lowered fishing line more than 80,000 feet without hitting the end, that objects tossed into the hole never made a sound, and that bizarre events surrounded it: animals feared it, a neighbour's dead dog was supposedly thrown into it only to be seen alive again, and a bucket of ice lowered into the depths came back transformed.
