Episode 127: Getting Back to Basics || Why you should go back and start over!

Sometimes you just have to start over, ya know? Go back to the basics of your practice and really figure out what you enjoy, what matters the most to you, and how you can further deepen your connection to your faith and witchcraft!

The last few years have seen tremendous growth in both my personal and witchy life. Both things and people have come and gone. Life has changed, my practice has changed, and I have changed. All of these changes have brought chaos and disconnection into my daily life, so I've been feeling the need to get back to basics, as they say, and really connect to my practice again from the beginning. This can be a fun and enlightening exercise in personal growth and self-awareness.

Episode 124: The Dullahan, The Good Woman, and The Death Coach

This month, I was inspired to give a more spooky episode for the podcast, something steeped in legend and folklore.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was written by Washington Irving, an American author that wrote the story detailing a Hessian soldier that was decapitated during a battle in the revolutionary war come back to life without his head. However, he isn't the first or only headless horseman in legend or myth. In Ireland and some other Celtic nations, there is another headless horseman that is commonly associated with The Dullahan.

Today's story comes to us from Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland by T. Crofton Crocker. It is the story of The Dullahan and the Headless Horseman. The full text is in the public domain and it is available on Project Gutenberg, as well as the full text of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.

Someone on YouTube asked me to clarify my thoughts on using magic for personal gain. I hadn't done so in that particular video so here I am!

The tldr; version of my answer is yes, you can use magic for personal gain. There is no hard and fast rule in witchcraft that says you can't use magic to get things you want or need. I invited a friend of mine, Betty, better known as The Witch from the North on social media, to come on the show with me and talk about the commodification of witchcraft and spirituality. We dig into why our community gets inundated with ads, products, and things we supposedly need. We talk about how this is harmful to the wider spiritual community but that it's also been a bit helpful. We also give our own perspectives on what we think can be done to break out of the cycle of consumerism within our practices.

So, gatekeeping and cancel culture...two heavy topics that are talked about in the wider occult community fairly often. As with most broad topics like this, I’m mainly going to focus on witchcraft and polytheism because that’s what I have experience with. I don't know if this is an unpopular opinion, but I think 9 times out of 10, that animal crossing your path is random. Those numbers may just be random. I think we're too quick to call random occurrences signs just because it's what we want. Deities and other spirits have many ways of communicating with us. Working with and honoring deities isn't inherently dangerous, but there are some ground rules that should be followed when approaching Them from a polytheistic perspective. The Gods can and will mess with your life if you're not respectful, and not all Gods are fuzzy and soft and full of love. Some will turn your life upside down to teach you a lesson. As long as you approach a deity with respect and reverence, you aren't necessarily in any danger at all.

Samhain is the third and final harvest festival in the neo-pagan wheel of the year. Its celebrations are deeply rooted in Irish lore and tradition and many people still celebrate Samhain traditions today. As an Irish pagan, Samhain is all about welcoming the darkness, remembering where I come from, and planting seeds for new growth. The most important parts of growth happen in darkness, and as we approach the darker half of the year, I'm reminded at Samhain of the things I need to hold on to and, more importantly, the things I need to be free from.

I like to use defensive magick techniques to protect from unwanted energies in and around my home, unwanted energetic influences when I'm out in public, and a way to protect my home and family from outside influences. Defensive magick doesn't have to protect against just energetic or magickal influence, either. It can be used to protect against physical harm or damage as well.

They mentioned something that really inspired me - and that's the fact that many pagans and witches don't discuss their personal experiences with their Gods, Goddesses, and other beings. This could be from fear, hesitation, or just because they don't want to.

I believe that sharing our personal experiences with our spiritual path - including the gods we work with - can be a learning experience for both ourselves and others. It is important for me to share my experiences because I'm all about the education and spread of knowledge.

Episode 31: Revisiting Theisms and My Personal Story

I have grown in my spirituality, and some things have shifted for me. Tune in to listen while we revisit the ideas behind the different "-theisms", their definitions, and how I've grown to know them.

~ Atheism - a lack of belief or a strong disbelief in the existence of a god or any gods
~ Henotheism - the worship of one god without denying the existence of other gods
~ Monotheism - the doctrine or belief that there is but one God
~ Duotheism - not in the dictionary, but often used to describe the belief in two deities; traditional Wicca, for example
~ Polytheism - belief in or worship of more than one god
~ Pantheism - a doctrine that equates God with the forces and laws of the universe
~ Theism - belief in the existence of a god or gods

~ Hard vs. Soft Polytheism? Is it a thing?

Is Wicca inherently duotheistic? Monotheistic? That depends on how you see the Gods. Are they their own beings, or do you believe in them as archetypes? That is duotheism, not polytheism.

Can soft polytheism be a thing when, semantically, you're just describing duotheism or monotheism if you believe all Gods are one God and all Goddesses are one Goddess?

NOTE:: I'm sorry for the background noise and noisy interruptions (wind, plane, etc.). It was nice when we first started recording and I didn't realize how loud the sounds would be. I tried to make them as quiet as possible, but alas, it didn't help too much.

Today's episode is a bit short since I'm still getting my bearings with recording in front of a camera as well as editing the audio. My daughter wanted to be in this video too, which was perfect because I spoke about a topic that was actually inspired by a choice she made. So, why is choice important? How do I view this as a Pagan and Wiccan? How does this affect my parenting? And what is the illusion of choice?

Why is it important for you to be involved in the politics in your country? As pagans, Wiccans, and general human beings, we need to be involved in the things that interest us as well as protect those around us. It is important for these decisions to be made based on facts and science and not faith and religion. Be the change you wish to see in the world, have compassion for others, and base decisions on laws that affect other people in science and not faith and religion.

Note: When speaking about Dianic Wicca, I mention that my issue with Dianic Wicca is that some do not allow transgender women to practice in their coven because they are not anatomically women. This was the incorrect verbiage on my end and I do apologize. If I understand correctly, the proper wording should be anatomically female. Please feel free to reach out to me if this is indeed incorrect.
