Dead on the Vine is his second film as director and won Best Film at indie icon Kevin Smith’s Smodcastle Film Festival and the BIFA qualifying Unrestricted View Film Festival. 

It then caught the eye of horror legend Brian Yuzna (Re-animator, Society) and he took it for his distribution label Dark Arts Entertainment, and released the film on DVD and streaming across the USA and Canada. 

The film has now been released across the world. Mark took a few minutes to discuss the movie, his process, and what he’s working on next.

Today we’re diving into Mr. Wonderful, a film that asks the big questions while juggling some very messy lives. At its heart, it’s the story of three generations of men in the same family, all slightly unravelling in their own spectacular ways. There’s a millennial son on the run from a drug dealer, a father who’s a jaded professor desperately trying not to lose his job, and a family patriarch battling senility. Between them, they’re chasing meaning, dodging disaster, and proving that existential crises definitely run in families.

The film comes from filmmaker Mark David, whose career is anything but boring. Born in Houston to Coptic Egyptian parents, David has been making films since the late ’90s, starting with the dark Southern Gothic drama Sweet Thing. Since then, he’s worked with an incredible range of actors, including Peter Falk, Val Kilmer, Rip Torn, and Oscar-winner Cloris Leachman, moving effortlessly between intense dramas and deliciously dark comedies.

Alongside directing, David is also a hugely accomplished cinematographer, having shot nearly 100 feature films in some of the world’s most remote locations. And before all that? He was a rock-and-roll drummer, signed to a record label, and even co-wrote songs with Coolio and Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog. In short: Mr. Wonderful comes from a man who knows a thing or two about chaos, creativity, and finding meaning where you least expect it.

What was really interesting was what happened after the band’s brightest moments of chart stardom. I was fascinated that Luke went off and became one of the hardest working actors in Hollywood, and if Guillermo del Toro loves an actor like Luke, all the more reason to praise him where it was due. And the fact Matt had 11 years in Las Vegas is extraordinary. Some acts would have trouble holding down a residency for 11 days, so when the chance came to see him live, it was a no-brainer. 

Give me The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra with any artist and I’m a happy camper, and that big band sound is phenomenal. And boy does Matt deliver on the promises he made. 

This is our chat from before that gig in April 2023, and it turned out to be one of the most interesting and honest interviews I’ve had in 30+ years.
