Brian and Anoa discuss Joe Biden's rollout and the calls for "context" around his support for the 1994 Crime Bill. Anoa and Brian parse through the calls for context, providing actual context to the discussion. There is a racist subtext to the conversation. Positioning the conversation as an attack or undermining the effort underway prioritizes the feelings and needs of someone who spent his career supporting and advocating for some of the most draconian laws of the modern political era. Despite all the praise and supposedly "wokeness" achieved after 13th, too many liberals are willing to cast aside real opportunities for progress to slide back. There are several good articles that lay out the issues with Biden's criminal justice record. This doesn't even begin to address his issues across multiple other areas. Accountability and Justice is critical to many communities and that should not be set aside because a wealthy white man who is politically connected decides to run for president a fourth time.

Does Representation Matter? Kamala Harris and Critiques on Purposeful Distortion

On this episode, Anoa sits down with Wendi Muse host of the Left POCekt Project. The two discuss whether representation matters and other concepts which are commonly distorted in general political discourse. Anoa and Wendi also dive into "blackness" and who gets to be Black in America in light of recent comments concerning Senator Kamala Harris' background. There are legitimate critiques of Senator Harris without feeding into anti-immigrant sentiments.

Wendi Muse is a PhD Candidate in History at New York University. Her dissertation analyzes Portuguese Africa’s impact on the Brazilian left through intellectual and political exchange during the Cold War. In addition to her doctoral work, Wendi holds a master’s in Latin American Studies, has lived and worked in Brazil, and has conducted research regarding Afro-Brazilian political organizing throughout the 20th century. Wendi is also the creator of the Left POCket Project, which makes the histories of leftist movements led by and comprised of people of color more easily accessible to the public. On a quick trip back to the mountain state Anoa managed to catch a rally led by organizers and activists pushing for fully funded benefits through PEIA. Last spring we were captivated by the teacher led movement fighting back against the careless disregard of many who sit under the gold dome. This fight has continued and will continue through November. Teachers and other public employees have already proven their power and are not letting the momentum die down. Anoa also managed to catch State Senator Richard Ojeda, who is now running for Congress in the 3rd District. Senator Ojeda is not one to mince words and focused on making sure all West Virginians know they have the power to stand up and demand better. People powered movements are a beautiful thing!

Arguably voter suppression has been one of the most underreported stories of the 2016 election cycle. He also detailed the issues with the voter fraud commission led by cross check creator Kris Kobach. Gerald also discussed cases undertaken by the Atlanta and Georgia chapters of the NAACP to address voter suppression on the local and state level. Gerald stressed the need for using all of the tools in our tool box and getting people engaged not just ahead of elections. There is no off-cycle.

Anoa recaps some of the latest news coming out of Chicago including the recommended firing of officers involved in the Laquan McDonald murder. She gives an overview of the DOJ decision to end use of private prisons. A step in the right direction, it is only a drop in the bucket. Private prisons operate at the State level in large numbers. It also does not address the use of private contractors by DHS for immigration detention centers. Later in the conversation, Anoa speaks with Wendi Muse about #BlackBrazilSyllabus and #LochteGate. Wendi discusses her research on left/anti-racist activism and highlights the rich history of activism amongst Black Brazilians and more.

This episode is a mashup of commentary discussing the March 8 International Women's Strike and three interviews conducted post interview to showcase the varying experience of Women. Anoa makes the case for researching and understanding the motivation and intent behind the day's actions. There is power in spoken word, and listening to the experiences of others can help us grow as we continue to build spaces for opposing structural and systemic issues. Today is as much about sending a message as it is about the value of women standing up and speaking their truth. This is the beginning of a new way of discussing feminism and organizing around "women's issues." All issues are women's issues. We will be heard.
