We’ve toyed with an idea for a while that seemed just crazy enough to work: "What similarities are there between Iron Maiden switching vocalists from Paul Di’anno to Bruce Dickinson, and Faith No More moving from Chuck Mosley to Mike Patton?" Despite the unusual premise, we found more parallels than expected.

In this piece, we compare and contrast both bands before and after their respective lineup changes. We discuss the catalysts for these transitions, the resulting impact on the music, and how a band can survive such a potentially catastrophic shake-up. We also explore the merits of singers who may not be technically proficient, like Chuck Mosley, and how vocal character can often make all the difference.

We don’t know exactly what happened with Episode 101, but we share what we do know, explain the situation, theorize on why it happened, and cross our fingers it doesn’t happen again with this episode. Pro Tools rears its ugly head and crashes Nick’s system a couple times during this one, but we offset that bad news with listening to some killer tunes including a couple bands from Romania that we had never heard of before. I was first made aware of Tim Smolens when I discovered Estradasphere. Tim was the bassist and producer for the incredible, genre-hopping, Bungle adjacent band. As I delved further into the works of the various members, it became clear that Tim has a unique musical personality and vision. Today, Tim has assembled a super group of sorts in High Castle Teleorkestra, featuring members that have played in Secret Chiefs 3, Farmers Market, Don Salsa and Mr. Bungle. On this episode Tim and I listen to the two 7" singles that HCT has released so far, and Tim regales me with background stories, and production techniques. Tal Fried is an Israeli native living in Tel Aviv. Israel has a long and vibrant history of fascinating metal bands, rich with the culture of their homeland but also with an ear turned towards the metal community worldwide. Unfortunately, a large number of these bands have remained unknown to metal fans outside of Israel, so I asked Tal to show me the hidden gems that lay next to The Mediterranean sea. Many metal fans are familiar with Salem or Orphaned Land, but in this episode Tal takes us on a quick, but in depth, trip into the world of Israeli metal. We discuss the importance of Israeli promoter Yishai Sweartz and the Agalloch performance in Tel Aviv almost a decade ago. Tal plays death, black and doom metal bands from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and shares personal stories of his interactions with them as well as accounts of their live performances. In no way is this meant to be an exhaustive history of metal in Israel. This is simply the tip of the iceberg in a deeply rooted and passionate scene. He was my partner in crime on Nothing's "The Grey Subaudible" album, he's the main writer in Climb to Zalem and has been involved in a number of bands including Killer Whale, Self Spiller and Snares of Sixes.
