I'm a business owner, military wife, a new mum living in my Magnolia married quarter, running two successful businesses and creating the most impactful work of my life. But it wasn't always like this. When I first started my business,

I was struggling to get started and wrestling with how to achieve my dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur. I was desperately seeking inspiration and a network of people who just understood how it really feels to be a military spouse in business. Fast forward today, I am not only growing my business year after year, but also teaching others how to do it too, all whilst being surrounded by inspirational mill space.

Oh my goodness. Hello, it's me. I hope you're keeping well. It has been a long time since I did a podcast episode, but happily, the podcast series is coming back. It is heading your way soon, and I am looking for some new guests. We all know it's really tough. We probably all know that it's getting a little bit worse, and we know that the support's not out there where it should be. So that's why this podcast exists. It's to show that military life isn't always doom and gloom. There are positives. You just need to go out and find them. So if you think that's you, if you have an inspirational story or want to share something completely wonderful, please do think about it. Don't be frightened. You have a valid story that will make a difference in other people's lives. So come and share it. It's a great platform. It's had almost 20,000 downloads, so it's a brilliant and cost-effective way of sharing your wonderful news. Don't be worried about it.

I hope you are well, no matter where you find yourself in the world. It always astounds me when I check the stats on the podcast how many of you are listening, here in the UK and further afield. It's great to see how these inspirational stories are being spread across the world and hopefully helping you feel a little bit more positive in your military life.

Last week I felt especially honoured to talk at the International Military Spouse Virtual Employment Summit – showcasing military spouses, partners and other-halves in business and learning from other armed forces partners from across the globe. It was a wonderful event and really did highlight the challenges but in equal measure the people from our own community stepping up to support us all. I came away with a new sense that our voices really are being heard on a global stage, and a new hope that military families will now be part of the conversation. Something we can all work towards in our own ways.

A charity that has always known how important military families are is the RBL, who are sponsoring this series.

037 : Hannah Shergold, Artist

This week's NEW podcast episode is with the wonderful Hannah Shergold.

Winchester artist Hannah Shergold has a fascinating, albeit peculiar back story and is now one of the most successful self-representing artists in the UK.

Since leaving the Armed Forces in April 2018 Hannah has hosted two solo exhibitions on London's Pall Mall and within 15 months raised over £120,000 for charity through the sale of her artwork.

She recently partnered with Prince William's conservation charity Tusk with a fundraising target of £75,000.

But despite her success, Hannah has taken a less conventional route to reach it. She graduated from Cambridge University in 2006 having studied pre-clinical Veterinary Medicine. After three years as a bronze sculptor, she joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and commissioned into the Army Air Corps.

Following a ground tour of Afghanistan with the infantry she qualified as a Lynx helicopter pilot and has served all over the world including Germany, Canada and Kenya.

In 2015 Hannah was deployed to Kenya to conduct medical evacuation duties. Often based in austere locations in the remote northern deserts, she flew multiple casualties with life-threatening conditions to medical facilities in Nairobi.

Having experimented with painting whilst on standby Hannah's work quickly drew a following, and since her return to the UK in 2016 Hannah has featured on Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year, in the Financial Times "How To Spend It", Mayfair Times, Luxury London magazine, and was listed as one of the top 10 "Women to Watch in the Arts" by About Time magazine.

I am so excited to share this fascinating episode with you, and can't wait to hear what you think!

Hello you lovely lot, it's time for a new episode of the podcast series and this week it's with author Fiona Stanford.

I think it's safe to say that many of us have found ourselves a little bit in the shadows of our partners from time to time – especially if like Fiona, you are married to a 2-star general. In fact, everyone I told about interviewing Fiona instantly asked what her husband did, rather than about her. So it gives me great pride to be able to focus on her story, which is just as fascinating.

Author Fiona has a wealth of experience picked up during her 25 years of marriage, and I think you will get an awful lot from her story.

Her book 'Don't Say Goodbye: Our Heroes and the Families They Leave Behind', published by Hodder and Stoughton, is available from Amazon, and all good book stores.

034 : The Podcast is Back for Series 4!

Hello you lovely lot, I just thought it was time to give you a little update about the podcast series and when it will be back. Obviously, there has been a world load of changes since I announced the new series back in February – something that has affected the release of the podcast – however, there have been some exciting updates happening whilst we've been locked down.

New Episodes have been recorded with the lovely Sarah Stone from the co-working hubs, Artist Hannah Shergold, Author Fiona Stanford and of course the COVID response episode with the fab Georgie from Chasing Lobsters whose advice for getting through this time is brilliant. I would highly recommend going back and listening to that episode if you are struggling. And of course, thank you to the Royal British Legion for their continued support with sponsoring this entire series.

But, it's not just podcasting that's been keeping us busy. If you are a member of the Milspo Business Network you'll have noticed a load of changes.

There's the thriving Facebook networking group, which you are all very welcome to join where over 500 of us are supporting each other build amazing businesses. Make sure you've joined it. There are details over on milspo.co.uk

We have been keeping up with the monthly online networking sessions that were launched last year to great effect, and, in direct response to COVID 19 we now also meet every Wednesday to check-in and help the more isolated members of the network stay connected.

It was clear really early on that a lot of us might struggle with deployments and postings at this time so I am really happy to say that these weekly meetups – that we call Milspo Meet-Ups – are a massive success. So much so that we are already planning real-life meet-ups and a Christmas party when this is all over.

Unfortunately, as expected and experienced by all a lot of real-life events that we planned never made it to fruition, but that hasn't stopped us. We are leveraging this new online life and building on previous experience to keep going. Now, we are able to keep building our network no matter where we are located, or indeed where we are locked down.

It's been a very inspiring time connecting with so many new businesses and business owners and actually providing such wonderful service during this challenging time. So much has been cancelled and postponed but the joy of the online world and the adaptable spirit of the armed forces community has meant that we are able to carry on when others have stopped. It's unexpectedly been a very positive three months of lockdown and I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who have taken part in the events and online networking recently – to the new ambassadors and all of the members in the network – you're amazing and you inspire me every day.

Hello you lovely lot, I hope you are well despite the very trying time we find ourselves in. I can't quite believe that I am recording this during a national lock-down and a viral pandemic that is causing so much disruption. I hope that wherever you find yourself you and your loved ones are well.

Series 4 wasn't actually planned to start for a few more weeks but this episode has been recorded especially as a response to the world we find ourselves in and hopefully will offer you some support at this time.

032 : Dr Emma Egging, Jon Egging Trust

Hello you lovely lot, it's the last episode of series 3 today, and this time I have been talking to the completely inspirational Dr. Emma Egging, from the Jon Egging Trust.

On 20th August 2011, Flt Lt Jon Egging lost his life whilst completing a display at the Bournemouth Air Festival. He was coming to the end of his first year flying with the Red Arrows – his wife Emma was watching.

Emma, along with Jons mum and friends launched the Jon Egging Trust, a charity that supports struggling children to reach their full potential.

The charity website describes Jon as an inspirational person and it's this inspiration that's at the heart of everything they do.

The accredited programmes increase young peoples' self-confidence, self-esteem and other vital life and work skills and empower them to become role models within their own communities.

The Jon Egging Trust realises Jon's dream of inspiring young people through his love of aviation, teamwork and leadership, helping them to overcome adversity, identify their strengths and work towards their ambitions – with Emma leading the charge.

I can't quite tell you how honoured I am that Emma shared her very personal story with me.

Hello you lovely lot and welcome back to another inspirational episode, this week I have been talking to Phoebe from Off the Patch.

We talk a lot about setting up a business and the challenges you can face doing that, how she managed to launch a start-up during a difficult pregnancy and her husband was deployed and the similarities between a new business and a new baby.

This is a great episode if you are wondering how you might have a family and a business whilst living this military life, especially if your partner is looking at shared paternity leave and how that works in the Armed Forces, especially if they are operational and on the front line.

It's not about having it all, but it's about being flexible around military life whilst achieving your dreams. I really hope you enjoy this episode.

Today, in episode 30, I am talking to the completely lovely blogger and social media influencer Charlotte.

Charlotte started her Instagram account back in 2018 depicting her daily life as a mum, illustrator and wife. It was in 2019, when going through deployment that Charlotte started to share even more of her life – how the deployment affected her son, who was 2 at the time, and how she managed her life alone without a support network and the anxiety It can cause. The profile really took off and today she has over 22k followers on Instagram.

She talks openly about anxiety, body confidence and being plus-sized. She started her blog, mysizeismine.com in October which is a lifestyle blog but is centred around body confidence.

Hidden Valley Bushcraft has gone from a small idea, and has grown organically to what it is today - an award-winning company. Louise and her husband Nick run the company out of passion and a little bit of necessity – Ex-marine Nick has complex PTSD and uses the woodland for his own mental health, as well as encouraging Veterans to join him with the Warrior Programme, now supported by the Endeavour Fund and the Duke of Sussex who I have heard is a big fan.

024 : Alison Skipper, The Cariad Project JO

'If you have an idea, or see a need - address it! Anyone can help a cause if they are passionate enough'.

The Cariad Project JO was given life in 2019 by Alison Skipper. Alison moved to Jordan in 2018 taking up employment as a music teacher and volunteering with Loving Humanity UK. Whilst talking with urban refugee women she discovered that many were putting their family's needs before their own, any materials on hand were used as makeshift pads due to having no money left to buy suitable period pads. Use of these makeshift pads mixed with a lack of menstrual health education results in an extremely high risk of infection and sickness.

The Cariad Project JO collaborates with NGOs in Jordan to provide safe reusable period pads and menstrual health educational sessions, these sessions provide information about how to correctly care for reusable pads and about healthy menstruation.

The main aims of the project are to empower local and refugee women through education and to alleviate the pressure on our environment caused by disposable period product waste.

What Alison has created is so very important, and such a positive response to what could have been a challenging international posting. I really hope you enjoy this episode.

023 : Claire Willsher, DR ME

Claire Willsher is the founder of DR ME, a qualified PE teacher, and wife of an RAF officer. Having worked in numerous schools throughout the UK and Europe she is passionate about educating people on the benefits of whole-body health. DR ME runs interactive workshops focusing on 4 key areas: Diet, Resilience, Mind, and Exercise (DR ME). People can become their own doctor with the implementation of small, yet significant changes using the knowledge gained at DR ME workshops to increase their resistance to disease. DR ME presents workshops in both education and corporate environments. Having seen first hand her enthusiasm for health spread to children, parents and staff alike, Claire believes that DR ME workshops encourage people and those around them to make informed choices, thus transforming them into the best they can possibly be. She's also involved in setting up a co-working hub in RAF Leeming. It's something that's very important for her and stems from her research into mental health and how a lack of connections and face to face time impacts our loneliness with a risk of causing depression and anxiety. By having a collective place to work, we can all reduce the loneliness and can help re-create a sense of purpose.

Claire is also a founding member of the InDependent Spouses in Business Facebook group and was one of the very first participants of the Virtual Networking events that were rolled out this summer.

017 - Pollyanna Charnley from The BeGlad Movement

Today I've been talking to the wonderful Pollyanna Charnley from The BeGlad Movement.

In the BeGlad Movement Polly interviews inspiring people who have experienced terrible things but have found a way to move forward and she hopes that by sharing the stories of others it can help those who might still be struggling.

I first met Polly when I was invited to be interviewed as part of the BeGlad Movement project. We spoke about my mums' Multiple Sclerosis and my own military life has affected me but how it has ultimately pushed me forward to create The InDependent Spouse. It was a very emotional interview and is still available to view along with over 100 others on YouTube.

Polly is genuinely a wonderful person, who is always on the lookout for the best things in life. This episode is jam-packed full of her positive outlook and solutions to life's more difficult moments. I really hope you enjoy the very last episode of series 2.

Today I am talking to the completely amazing Alecia.

If you've been watching Heist on Sky One you will probably recognise Alecia as the no-nonsense talking, highly skilled detective, but there's so much more to this military spouse than that.

In this very open interview, Alecia shares her experiences of working as a police constable whilst her husband was deployed and how PTSD has affected their life since his return.

We also get a behind the scenes look of the Heist, how she helps run Elite Air Imagery, and of course, her work to support families of Royal Marines also suffering with PTSD.

015 : Strength Behind The Strong

Today I've been chatting to some amazing women who have founded Strength Behind the Strong.

Sharon, Emma and Vanessa are from the very first Military Wives Choirs in the BBC television show, The Choir with Gareth Malone. Together with a number of other military wives they volunteered their time and worked together to create the charity The Military Wives Choirs Foundation. A legacy of the success of the No.1 single 'Wherever You Are', the charity has gone on to support thousands of women in the military community signing in choirs.

Now, led by Sharon, they are focused on bridging the gap in support of military wives and their families with Strength Behind the Strong.

Strength Behind the Strong emerged out of a pursuit to inspire and support the community, and a desire for actions to speak louder than words. A desire to help women just like us in their everyday lives and in times of crisis.

014 : Jo Milmine from Shiny Bees

Today I have been talking to Jo Milmine from Shiny Bees.

Jo is a former RAF Aerospace Battle Manager who turned her love of knitting into a multi-award-winning podcast series. Since August 2012 Jo has hosted the Shiny Bees podcast, a show about knitting and yarn mixed with snippets of Jo's life and a lot of comedy goodness

Originally started as a hobby to fill her time during a posting to Africa Jo built a location independent business to move wherever she was posted. She now records podcasts whilst traveling the world, and Shinybees was awarded 'Best UK Podcast of 2016' at the New Media Europe Awards and 'Most Engaged Audience of 2015' at the UK Podcast Awards.

Jo also works as an online business strategist, helping creatives plan their businesses and so this episode is jam-packed with handy business tips, even if you never picked up some knitting needles.

013 : Mindy from Asali

Today I have been talking to Mindy from Asali.

Lincolnshire-based Asali create beautiful goods from genuine leather that are not only perfect for aviation fan, but are also helping out some well-loved charities.

All of the Asali's military product have an RAF aircraft on them - from the majestic Spitfire through to the Typhoon – and everyone single one is officially licensed by the Ministry Of Defence.

But it's not all about hitting margins. From the start, Mindy has intentionally built her business with a charitable aim. A percentage of the profits from every sale goes to a deserving charity.

In this episode, Mindy shares how she launched a product-based business, why she chose to have that charitable element in her growth plan and how she finds balance within her business life.

012 : Grace from The Rainbow Tree

Today I have been talking to Grace, founder of the Rainbow Tree, blogger and children's author. Her cross curricular art book, 'Potty About Pots; Arts & Crafts For Home And School', is written for 4-12 year olds and meanders her way through the history of ceramics in a fun and simple way for children.

Trained in the London art world, she worked for an International Art Consultant and Bonham's Auction House. The day after getting married, she moved to Scotland where she found she could find no work in her area of expertise. After a year of looking she began to stop following the Art Market or reading anything to do with the art world as it was just too painful and doing nothing for her mental state. To add to this her husband was deployed to Afghanistan for 7 months a year into their marriage. They found out the day before he left she was pregnant. Grace started work as a TA and she soon realised there was a fundamental lack of art being taught in Primary Schools. This inspired her to write her book, Potty About Pots which was published 2018 and a second book is already in the making.

As a busy mum of two she now writes at night and she freelances for Super Simple contributing content to their blog section. If she had to describe herself as a superhero, she'd be a full time Mummy by day and creative mastermind by night. I really hope you enjoy this 4th episode of The InDependent Spouse.

011 : The Forces Wives Challenge

Today I've been chatting to Heather from the brilliant Forces Wives Challenge. Heather herself served in the regular army for 10 years and was deployed on operations, exercises and led expeditions throughout the world. She now experiences military life from the other side of the fence and is keen to give military wives the same exciting challenges and sense of belonging that she experienced whilst serving – and so Forces Wives Challenge was born.

The FWC seeks to unite wives and partners through adventure. They are working with the Royal British Legion to raise awareness of the isolation that some of us in this community live with. But it's not just to raise awareness, it provides solutions too. In February 2019 12 military wives will seek to climb the highest volcano in the world in Chile. This is the first of many challenges that the team are planning with the idea of inspiring other wives to dare to dream and do it too.

It was great to hear what the FWC team are doing. They're bringing together wives from all services and are creating some fab opportunities. I'm so excited I seem to have accidentally signed up to climb Everest!

010 : Amy Nolan - Ginger Rainbow

Today I'm talking to the wonderful Amy Nolan from Ginger Rainbow. Amy is a creative business owner who produces her colouring in gifts, cards and illustrations from her married quarters in Gloucestershire. Inspired by military life her colouring in pillow cases sprung from an idea she had whilst her husband was deployed to Afghanistan. Since then the idea has grown into a fully-fledged business, and more recently she has created the Wings Doodle Boxes with the Royal Air Forces Association and her cards have even been published by a national greetings card company.

This episode is full of handy business tips and inspiration. She's a brilliant creative with enough energy to bottle and I am so proud to say that she is also a very great friend. I hope you really enjoy this episode with my fab pal Amy.

009 : Jo Lomax - Huggable Heroes

This week I have been talking to Jo Lomax, the inspirational founder of Huggable Heroes. Jo and her team produce personalised Huggable Heroes for those suffering from anxiety or separation. Inspired by her own experiences as a wife of a Marine, Jo started the company in 2015 and now helps all sorts of families with her Huggable Heroes.

They are for children who are in hospital, for children with separated parents, for those struggling with dementia, and of course for our own Armed Forces Community – because everyone going through deployment does need a hug!

This first episode of Series Two is very emotional and I cannot thank Jo enough for being so open and genuine when she shared her story with me.

006 : Who is The InDependent Spouse? - Jess Sands

Today there's something a little different for you. I've realised that as the series has progressed you're probably interested in the story behind the podcast series and a little bit about me.

Today I am sharing my own story - why I started The InDependent Spouse and how I launched my own business, Design Jessica.

The InDependent Spouse podcast was born from a need to hear something new.

A need to hear from the inspirational men and women who experience service life from the 'home-front' while creating successful businesses.

To give a voice to those who are already achieving amazing things, and to inspire those who dream of doing the same.

As the traditional role of the 'military spouse' continues to evolve in line with the military itself, it seems only fitting to reflect these changes in a modern way. What's also clear is the importance of developing your own role; one that gives you, the spouse, your own voice while also complimenting that of the service member.

My own design agency, Design Jessica started after the close of RAF Lyneham, and a need to move with my husband's new posting. After a few struggles, that I talk about in the podcast episode, I now run a successful design business from my own married quarter, designing for military companies and charities.

004 : Little Troopers - Louise Fetigan

Welcome to the third story in the series. Today I'm talking to the wonderful Louise Fetigan from Little Troopers

Little Troopers is a registered charity supporting some of the 130,000 children with one or both parents serving in the British Armed Forces, regular or reserve. They provide fundamental resources, initiatives and events to ease and aid repeated separation periods aiming to keep parent and child connected and bonded even when miles apart.

Louise herself served in the British Army and saw active service in Kosovo. Her husband is a serving soldier who has undertaken six operational tours of duty since their daughter was born in 2003. Louise is passionate about helping all the Little Troopers at home through the anxiety of deployment and also the stress of a long course or exercise having experienced first hand the impact it can have on the family. She now runs the charity from her married quarter in Windsor and is moving in the summer.

I loved talking to Louise today. Her passion for the charity and the work that she puts in can only be admired - she is quite literally the busiest person I have interviewed so far!

003 : Heropreneurs - Peter Mountford

Welcome the second story in the InDependent Spouse series. This week I've been talking to the wonderful Peter Mountford, Chairman of Heropreneurs and The Veterans' Foundation.

Heropreneurs is a unique UK registered charity that was founded in 2009 to help military veterans, and their dependants, on the road to creating their own businesses. At the heart of Heropreneurs is its highly effective Mentoring Programme – all its mentors are successful entrepreneurs and business people who give their time entirely for free.

The Veterans' Lottery donates more than 50% of ticket sales to UK charities through a series of grants. So far 50 charities have benefitted and in the next 12 months Peter expects that there will be over £1milion donated through the Veterans' Foundation.

Peter himself is a successful chairman, financier, and active investor. He has been on the board of many companies and is a specialist in providing strategic advice. He is also one of the UK's experts in IPOs and has floated 3 of the most successful companies ever floated on the Alternative Investment Market.

002 : Recruit for Spouses - Heledd Kendrick

Welcome to this very first, and very special episode of the InDependent Spouse Podcast series. This week I've been talking to the amazing Heledd Kendrick, CEO and Founder of Recruit for Spouses.

Recruit for Spouses is a social enterprise, set up to help military wives and partners into employment, to work with employers to change mind-set, and to mentor the applicants while they're job searching. The best part? Once you've got the job, they don't just leave you there. They follow up with both applicant and employer to ensure that the placement is working for both parties.

Recruit for Spouses has aided over 5,000 spouses and partners of serving UK personnel gain employment all over the UK. Since 2009 Heledd and her team have shaped HR policy, and Heledd herself has won David Cameron's Big Society Award, a Women in Defence award and has been granted a fellowship at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Heledd is a current Army wife and has built the company from her married quarter. She's championing the talent of the military spouse with the MoD and with the team at Alexander Mann Solutions she is working with Recruit for Spouses to pioneer spousal employment.
