In Part One of this two-part series, we take you through the events leading up to the death of two-year-old Parker Scholtes. We look at her life, her family, and the decisions made in the hours before she was left alone in a hot car — decisions that would end in irreversible tragedy.

It’s a deeply emotional case, and we’ve chosen to split it into two parts out of respect for the gravity of what happened — and because there is far too much to unpack responsibly in a single episode.

When the remains of ten bodies were found in late 2010 and early 2011, detectives were faced with the haunting prospect that they were hunting a serial killer. On 30 December 1998, Alan had been out with his partner, Jane Rowe, and their friend, Nigel Jones, enjoying a few drinks at a local pub.

During an altercation at a Chinese restaurant at approximately 11:30pm, Alan and Jayne argued briefly. That argument continued when they got home. As Jayne went upstairs for 30 seconds in the early hours of 31 December, Alan was brutally stabbed to death outside the house.

But what followed only deepened the outrage. The woman responsible for the attack was a mentally ill foreign national with a long history of violent behaviour and disturbing psychiatric issues. She was known to adult care services, known to the police, known to the entire system. And yet, somehow, she was walking free that day.

This wasn’t just a case of a life taken too soon. It was a case that raised urgent questions — about mental health oversight, immigration, and how we protect the most vulnerable among us. Questions that, for many, still haven’t been answered.

Flowers first came to the public's attention in 2013 when he was blamed for the near-collapse of the Co-operative Bank - he was the bank's chairman from 2010 to 2013. Some bad decisions were made during his tenure and it's not hard to see why - Flowers was often turning up to work following all-night cocaine and ketamine benders. He was in no fit state to be running a bank and when a sex worker filmed him in the act, it was the beginning of a spectacular downfall that would see his personal and professional lives implode in the most public way possible.

When Jillian took over as the head of the University of Brighton's payroll department in 2015, she was intent on change. The department needed overhauling and she was just the woman to do it.

David Browning, a then 49-year-old payroll administrator in the department, immediately took a disliking to his new boss. In time however, the pair became close, with Jillian supporting David following the sudden death of his father in 2016. But when David misconstrued Jillian's support for something more, a chain of events was set in motion that would end in tragedy.

Home to Blackpool Pleasure Beach and the iconic Blackpool Tower, the town attracts millions of visitors every year. And it's not just tourists that flock to this quintessentially British holiday destination. Every year, thousands of people move to Blackpool from other parts of the UK. In 2016, 21-year-old Debbie Leitch and her mother, Elaine Clarke, moved there from Leeds, with Elaine's three other children.

The move should have signalled the beginning of an exciting new chapter in their lives, but for Debbie, who had Down Syndrome, it heralded the beginning of the end when her life spiralled into a downward descent into hell where neglect, abuse and isolation reigned supreme.

This is an infuriating story which contains descriptions of neglect and abuse that some listeners may find distressing. Listener discretion is advised.
