Lyndsay Keith talks with Andrew Dominianni of News Channel 3 in Kalamazoo about Michigan's decision to reopen murder sentences for people who were young when they committed their crimes. After the U.S. Supreme Court's 2012 ruling in Miller v. Alabama, Michigan has repeatedly widened protections for young offenders, now reaching people 20 and under. Prosecutors are pulling case files out of storage, some dating back to the 1960s and 70s, and trying to track down witnesses and surviving family members. Dominion walks through cases at both ends of the spectrum, from a 16-year-old babysitter convicted in a 1995 infant death to a 1992 gang shooting in Detroit, and explains why even Oxford school shooter Ethan Crumbley's life sentence must now be reconsidered. He also shares what victims' families are going through as cases they believed were closed come back to court. The court's reasoning rests on brain development research, while one local prosecutor argues that anyone old enough for kindergarten knows killing is wrong. Lyndsay then looks at how states from Massachusetts to Hawaii are drawing their own lines, and at the larger question underneath it all: when does a kid stop being a kid?

Then, Capitol Hill reporter Ahtra breaks down Washington's debate over regulating artificial intelligence. She explains why lawmakers who want enforceable safety rules have little use for the voluntary pledge tech leaders signed at the White House, how data centers have become a midterm issue in places like Texas, and why Republicans such as Sen. Josh Hawley are teaming up with Democrats on AI liability legislation. She also looks at Congress's track record on social media, the tech industry's lobbying power, and the administration's argument that the U.S. must beat China, a goal she says no one has clearly defined.

The National Press is a daily show hosted by Lyndsay Keith that brings the country's best local reporting to a national audience.

Just across the Rio Grande from SpaceX's Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, conservationists releasing endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles into the Gulf say they keep finding something else on the beach: debris they link to SpaceX launches and testing.

Lyndsay Keith talks with Yami Virgin, investigative reporter for Fox San Antonio, who has covered the Texas-Mexico border for decades. The nonprofit Conibio Global says it has documented plastic, foam, aluminum, wiring, tanks, and other material along nearly 25 miles of Mexican coastline near Playa Bagdad, including pieces large enough to require a truck to haul away. Local fishermen say red snapper and other species have become harder to find, and the group's own testing has raised concerns about chromium, copper, and aluminum. Virgin is careful to separate what can be seen from what has been proven. No study has established that SpaceX operations have harmed fish, turtles, or other marine life, and SpaceX has said material tested after Starship incidents poses no chemical or biological risk. Virgin explains why she is seeking records from the EPA and Mexican regulators before drawing any conclusions.

Then, former NASA astronaut Daniel Tani, who spent 120 days aboard the International Space Station and completed six spacewalks, puts the larger debris problem in perspective. He describes the metal shavings he encountered during a 2007 spacewalk, explains how launch-site debris differs from the defunct satellites and rocket fragments circling Earth, and makes the case for setting end-of-life standards for spacecraft now, while orbital congestion is still manageable. As commercial spaceflight accelerates, the question of who monitors and cleans up what gets left behind is only getting bigger.

The National Press is a daily show hosted by Lyndsay Keith that brings the country's best local reporting to a national audience. Each episode features the journalists closest to the story, reporters who know their communities and have spent years digging into the issues that matter to the people living there. Because before it's a national story, it's a local story. <itunes:summary>

Baltimore City Public Schools runs on a nearly $2 billion budget, one of the highest per-pupil spending levels of any large U.S. district. So why has the graduation rate barely moved since 2017?

Lyndsay Keith talks with Chris Papst, lead investigative reporter for FOX45's Project Baltimore, who has spent nearly a decade covering public education in Maryland. Since Project Baltimore launched, the district's funding has climbed while enrollment has fallen, yet the graduation rate has gone from 71% to just 72%. Attendance is down, chronic absenteeism is up, and average SAT scores have slipped. Papst explains where the money actually goes, why non-instructional staff have grown faster than teaching positions, and how a funding formula built around enrollment means schools get paid whether or not students learn.

Papst also breaks down Baltimore's "50 percent rule," which guarantees students half credit for a marking period even if they never show up or turn in an assignment, and why some students have learned to game it. He contrasts that with a high-poverty Maryland elementary school where teachers visit students' homes before the first day of class, a school that continues to beat state averages. The district says its new budget invests heavily in literacy, math, tutoring, and special education. Papst argues the system underneath has barely changed in decades.

The National Press is a daily show hosted by Lyndsay Keith that brings the country's best local reporting to a national audience.
