Transmission: The story behind the concert fighting for Trans+ rights

In a hostile enviroment for Trans+ rights and a year of rollbacks of rights since the Supreme Court ruling on the Equality Act will be a sharp focus, for 12,500 Trans+ people, allies, and some of the UK’s most loved household names as they gather in Wembley Arena on March 11th 2026, for Transmission Live - a significant intervention from the music industry, and changemakers to bring allies together, in step, to advocate for the needs, and rights, of the Trans+ Community.

Together with Not A Phase's Maxine Heron, QueerAF speaks to organiser Olly Alexander, and broadcaster, author and model Munroe Bergdorf to explore the cultural signifigance of the concert - but also to examine: When you’re a defacto minority, you just don’t have the numbers to deliver all the change you need - and that’s where getting allies to pick up the charge, really counts.

The transgender pilot who survived the Nazis and set racing records

Roberta Cowell, or Betty might have been born into a strict, religious family - but her history, is one with many lessons.

She shows us that Trans+ people are more than just their identity. That Trans+ people deserve to tell their own stories. That, as Sabah Choudrey wrote in this year’s Trans+ History Week workbook lesson about her - “while positive trans representation matters, you don’t need to see yourself represented to know that you can live authentically, and be trans, happy and celebrated.”

The trans man who funded gender affirming care when no-one else was

Reed Erickson was an eccentric trans multimillionaire who transitioned in the US in the 1950s. Erickson’s access to wealth and relationship to trans healthcare went on to greatly shape how Western gender clinics developed from the 1960s onwards. In this episode, Vic Parsons explores that link, and unpacks what we can learn from the story of a vastly influencial figure in gender affirming care models.

The media and advertising industry's role in rising transphobia

This year, for the first time since tracking of it began - Trans+ rights in Europe retracted, instead of grew. In the UK, hate crimes towards trans people are up nearly 1400% in the last decade. Meanwhile, as hate plays out on the streets - the addiction in some parts of the media to hateful, clickbait headlines that drive attention to news providers, but division in communities all over the world has continued.

Rewind: I'm gay, and this is how I overcame my homophobia

First produced and published in 2018, in the British Podcast Awards nominated Season Two of QueerAF - Support our work

After Sean Allsop produced this episode, one of his first paid documentary audio commissions, he’s gone on to have an illustrious career making documentaries for the BBC, The World Service, Virgin Radio, Absolute Radio: And a vast number of them about the LGBTQIA+ community.

Sean’s brought the history of Section 28, The Legacy of Terrance Higgins and investigations into Poland’s LGBT free zones onto National radio. All, in part, because we were able to give him one of his first portfolio pieces, as well as the training and mentoring on how to do queer stories justice.

That’s what we’re up to here, supporting queer creatives to build media careers so they can change the media - all to change the country.

Sean suffered from internalised homophobia. He is perfectly OK with his sexuality, but kept asking himself why the LGBTQIA+ community has to be 'so queer.' At the time of recording, Sean Allsop was a recent radio graduate and set out to find if it's possible to overcome your shame of being gay – and learns why he has, until now, projected his own homophobia onto others.

This week we’re sharing the conversation we recorded at the Trans+ History Week community event 2025, with the theme: How do we tell our history,

so we can all learn from it?

It might have taken place back in May but, well lets face it even before this year’s Trans+ History Week, which is held in the first full week in May each year - the UK’s Supreme Court decision on the definition of a woman in the Equality Act has changed the context, urgency and climate for Trans+ and queer rights.

The recording followed on directly from the first episode of the season, our live podcast recording with guest host Anthony Lexa from Sex Education and special guest Abigail Thorn, of Philosophy Tube and Game of Thrones fame.

To celebrate the second year of creatives we’ve mentored for Trans+ History Week, we brought together one of last years, podcasters Alex Parnham Cope, one of this year’s history writers Nisreen Fox, and the legal researcher who was the only Trans+ journalist commissioned in the UK media to write about the Supreme Court ruling itself during the week, Jess O'Thomson: And yes, that was by us - here on QueerAF. The discussion is hosted by Jamie Wareham.

The Ballrooms from India to Wales getting tens across the board

You may know ballroom from the legendary show “Pose” or “Paris is Burning” but this beautiful home curated for and by queer icons is becoming a worldwide community, with queer communities of colour, finding safety and unity in these spaces.

There’s nothing more queer than doing something because no-one else will. That is the story off Ballroom - from it’s New York blossoming, to as Anthony Pius will take us through in this episode of the QueerAF podcast with Trans+ History Week - it’s flourishing international growth from India to Wales.

The tension of the handkerchief - do you feel it too?

Who do you think you are? A universal tension exists in an acute way for trans people, our dependency on other people for recognition, part of how identity works is laid bare in the struggle for trans liberation.

Perhaps not better explained by examinig not just any simple piece of cloth, but the very queer and Trans+ history of the handkerchief.

There’s the hanky code (or flagging). There are historical examples (some fictional, others not): phallic handkerchiefs, morality judgments intertwined with the hanky, hankies as tokens passed from lover to lover, and handkerchiefs worn around the neck. But they all rely upon the handkerchief to be read – to be perceived in a certain way. They rely upon dependency.

In this week's QueerAF podcast with Trans+ History Week, Ted Tinkler explores the ontology of the handkerchief and what it tells us about the power dynamics of dependency and intimacy - and what that tells us about being Trans+.

At an acute time for our community, stories are a powerful tool to unpack prejudice and set a better narrative for queer communities.

But what can the media industry do differently, and how can we do this in the audio and podcast space? Back when boys, played girls, pretending to be boys

There perhaps isn’t a more British way, to say - gender is a construct - than with Shakespeare is there?

So put aside your stack of sonnets, go stick on the kettle, brew a cuppa, and let Shevek Imogen Fodor tell you about the gender foolery that took place in Shakespearean England and ignited and already ember burning flame of gender diversity on stage in the UK's most hallowed theatre institutions.

If we acknowledge that gender was performed, messed with and expanded on stage then we can find a glimpse of positive non-binary, genderqueer, genderfluid ways of existing in the past. That's what we'll explore in another episode with Trans+ History Week of the QueerAF podcast.

Without Lynn Conway, you wouldn't have a mobile phone

Lynn Conway pioneered the technology that makes it possible to use the device you're about to listen to this podcast on now.

She even coined a term for why her story has been forgotten, ignored and erased.

With a contribution to computer science in almost parallel importance to Alan Turing, producer Chuck Copenspire explains the Connway Effect of why her story is only just beginning to be celebrated as well as the legacy that should be.

In this episode of the QueerAF podcast, producer Chuck Copenspire digs through precious archive material of Lynn, telling her story in her own words, mixed with interviews with her contemporaries and historians to ask: what is her legacy, and why has it so rare for people to know her work? Like Alan Turing, her work in computer science was pivotal to how the world works today.

Live Episode: Star War's Abigail Thorn and Sex Education's Anthony Lexa

Abigail Thorn is currently filming a new role as a trans femme action star, she revealed at the Trans+ History Week community event on a live recording of the QueerAF podcast. The actor, who is known for her roles in the Game Of Thrones (House Of The Dragon, Sharako Lohar) and Star Wars (The Acolyte, Ensign Eurus) universes, said:

“I can't say what it is, but I am about to start filming a big action thing this summer. I'm having boxing lessons and sword fighting lessons like three times a week and like learning to dive across things.”

Although there has been a transgender superhero before, notably Dreamer, played by Nicole Maines in the CW series Supergirl - Thorn says this is the first time a trans femme person has been cast as an action star in a production of this kind.

“I said to the producers when I got it, was like, thank you for giving me this. Because they didn't write it with a trans woman in mind, they just wrote it. And I said to the producers, thank you for giving me this because the idea that a trans woman can be an action star has not yet occurred to anyone outside of this project. And when it does, it's going to blow their minds.”

What healthcare and disability challenges do the queer community face?

The little known trans history I discovered in the UK's most famous museums

Rehangs at art museums are rare. The last one at Tate Britain was in 2012. Whilst galleries will make small changes to their on-display collections, these are small, only happen every few months and usually happen for specific reasons (such as an item going on loan to another gallery).

But each rehang gives an art gallery to make a statement on what its mission as an institution is. A statement that visitors will likely see for ten or more years. So it's a big deal that Tate Britain and the National Gallery both increased the amount of LGBTQIA+ representation in their recent rehangs. This week's producer, Mills Dyer explores some key Trans+ history they reveal, with guests:

Rewind: Getting my first queer haircut

After a busy Pride month at QueerAF HQ - a rewind episode, while we prepare the final few episodes of an already stunning set of stories from emerging and marginalised LGBTQIA+ audio producers.

This Week Rosa Eaton ponders: Do they need to get a queer haircut to feel part of the community?

In their university town of Bristol they meet the towns local queer hairdresser who has been helping trans, non-binary and LGBT+ people feel more at home with the identity they want to show to the world.

And despite Rosa’s love for long, femme hair, they wonder after seeing so many people get empowered by having the chop – whether to have a 'queer haircut' too. Something, by the end of this episode Rosa resolves – for better or worse.

It's a story many of us know, but in a new telling of the classic tale, Harry Woodgate has reimaging Oscar Wilde's Happy Prince.

This week, Jamie Wareham meets the author and explores, along with groups who donate books to schools, why diverse and LGBTQIA+ inclusive books are so valuable for children.

Harry Woodgate shares how and why they reimagined the classic tale, The Happy Prince, first written by historical queer icon Oscar Wilde. We also explore the many themes in the book that remain strikingly relevant today and reflects on the groups who are getting their books into schools.

We all know the trope: the supportive bestie who helps the main character finally achieve their dreams, gives the advice that helps them land the heartthrob or drops hard truths that lead to epiphanies. We all know that’s producers and casting directors' favourite place to tick their diversity boxes. I should know, I’m the actor playing them.

But what this week's producer Ki Griffin wants to know, especially as an actor and a black trans-masculine person who uses he/they pronouns is: "When do I get to be the main character?"

Holding out for my trans masc hero - will I find one?

Seeing your own experiences reflected back in history is often challenging when your identity has been erased, as many queer people know.

As an Irish lesbian living in Dublin, Oran Keaveney spent a great deal of time documenting and discovering the queer women who shaped modern Ireland. It was a huge turning point and they felt like they fit into their country’s mythology.

Now that they’ve transitioned and moved to London, they're here on QueerAF to look for this moment of self-recognition in Irish history again - but this time through the lens of transmasculinity, with a search for a trans masc hero from Irish history, with guests:

Do you love a queer punch up too? The comedic kind of course.

Lucie's first gig was in the basement of an Italian restaurant in Edinburgh, during the fringe:

Back then I was presenting as a straight guy, and performing routines about how terrible my hometown was. I stopped performing for a while as I went on other adventures, but after an 8-year, hiatus, I’m back as a transgender woman."

This week, comedian Lucie takes us on a trip to the 80s where, set against a backdrop of an HIV/AIDS moral panic, a comedy scene emerged as a direct challenge to the widespread racism, sexism and homophobia in the press and wider society.

The diverse 80s comedy scene began as underground, grassroots Alternative Cabaret, with stilt walkers, drag acts, prop comics, sketch troupes and stand up on a regular old lineup. But this underground alt-punk comedy scene that challenged the punch-down culture is still alive today. Lucie and co-host Jamal Utting explore it's roots, as well as having a right old giggle along the way:

MPOX: Just What The Pox is going on?

Monkeypox. That’s what What The Pox? is all about - a ‘poxcast’ if you will. Quite a lot of people have got it or had it at this point. I’m one of them. And it was not fun.

When I was home alone with Monkeypox in all kinds of pain, feeling scared and alone I had very little information. So I went online to find help.

And guess what? There wasn’t much official advice.

But I did start talking to all kinds of people: experts, people who’ve had the virus, and to those who see this outbreak as part of a much bigger picture.

We’ve spoken to those on the frontline of the response, and trying to understand this virus, including at 56 Dean Street, NAM Aidsmap, Prepster, Love Tank, London School of Hygine and Tropical Medicine and many more. It features contributors from the UK and US.

What The Pox is the information and support I wish I had at my disposal when I was going through Monkeypox.

Monkeypox is spreading worldwide - and for many of us queer people, the response feels a bit too familiar. You see history rarely repeats - but it often rhymes.

Tune in to steal our insight on this virus, what it means for our community and how we should handle it. Together, let's work out just What The Pox? is going on?

Join our conversation about being LGBT+ and disabled, considering; Hidden disabilities, access, perceptions on ability and, support in relationships.

The Speakers:

Jamie Wareham – University of Westminster Alumni Jamie Wareham is the Head of Digital Production at Attitude Magazine and host of National Student Pride's podcast #QueerAF. Jamie recently spoke at the inaugural WINC festival about coming to terms with his hidden disability, and how that has become part of his wider queer intersectional identity.

Callum Dziedzic –Callum is a script editor working in TV drama. He is an alumnus of the University of York’s Film and Television Production degree and Channel 4’s Production Training Scheme. Since graduating he has assistant script edited Ackley Bridge at The Forge, and Giri/Haji, a contemporary bi-lingual thriller produced by Sister Pictures for BBC Two and Netflix. More recently, Callum has developed an international nuclear armament thriller with Pulse Films and Netflix and has returned to Sister Pictures to script edit an upcoming comedy drama for BBC Two.

Callum was born with Tetraplegic Cerebral Palsy and uses a manual wheelchair for mobility. To him, the act of storytelling in film and television is intrinsically inclusive and universal. Ultimately, a great story can come from or captivate anyone, and it should not just be regarded as a means of self-expression but also as a way of levelling the playing field for all.

Char Bailey - Char is a celebrity life coach, acclaimed writer and speaker. Black, lesbian and autistic woman, she is the co-host of the Qmmunity podcast and well-being ambassador for UK Black Pride

Dustin Lance Black first appeared at National Student Pride in 2015 and has gone on to start a family with Olympic diver Tom Daley.

Lady Phyll is a trailblazer within the UK LGBT+ community. As well as co-founding UK Black Pride, she sits on multiple boards including Stonewall and the Trades Union Congress.

That’s what she explores in her university town of Bristol this week on #QueerAF.

Meeting the towns local queer hairdresser who has been helping trans, non-binary and LGBT+ people feel more at home with the identity they want to show to the world.

And despite Rosa’s love for her femme, long hair. She wonders after seeing so many people get empowered by having the chop – whether she wants to or should have a queer haircut too.

Something, by the end of this episode she resolves – for better or worse.

Young, vulnerable and new to a big city: I became the target of an online predator

Five years ago, Rory was drugged and sexually assaulted by two men, who I met while using Grindr.

Young, vulnerable and new to a big city – growing up without any LGBTQ inclusive sex education in school – I became the target for an online predator.

It’s been difficult coming to terms with this attack, but five years on later Rory is telling his story on his own terms on the #QueerAF podcast, in the hope it might inspire others to be empowered by it.

Lead singer of the feeling and writer of the musical that’s taken the UK’s west end by storm Dan Gillespie Sells, joinst us for our season three finale, to tell the story behind the soundtrack to your #QueerAF life: Everybody's Talking About Jamie.

In an ever changing world, the way we identify is constantly being challenged. Not just by people around us, but by ourselves too. And that’s why Jamie New, the 16 year old from Sheffield in the north of the UK, who’s career test says he’ll only amount to being a forklift truck driver – is such a refreshing story to watch, enjoy, and for queers everywhere – to see themselves in. And even better? It was inspired by a true story.

We interview Dan Gillespie Sells, lead singer in the Feeling and writer of the show, and star Layton Williams who is playing Jamie in the UK's West End.

James Barr and Dan Hudson host the hit UK LGBT+ podcast A Gay and a Non Gay, which began out of terrible conversation about pub etiquette.

But their friendship really grew when their worlds collided, as Talia, Dan’s girlfriend and James’s friend, left for the USA; Leaving James and Dan to fend for themselves with just one task, to make a podcast.

But when we say their worlds collided, we're not talking about the dynamic duo life making a podcast in their girlfriend’s absence. We're talking about the queer and straight world meeting head on. Russia doesn't want you to listen to this podcast

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is one of Russia’s most iconic cultural figures, but the country still denies he was gay. 125 years after his mysterious death, his magnificent symphonies, operas, and ballets – including all-time classics Swan Lake and The Nutcracker – are still performed, streamed and enjoyed by millions of people around the world.

But behind Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous melodies and explosive orchestral climaxes lies the complicated story of a gay man. His sexuality brought him both joy and despair, but it was largely tolerated within Tchaikovsky’s social circles. Now his country outright denies that he was gay, bans so-called ‘gay propaganda’ and continues to torture LGBT+ people in the region of Chechnya.

So is now more important celebrate Russia’s rich queer history?

Video games were long considered the territory of straight boys and men, with COD, Fifa, and GTA being the first thing that sprung to people’s imaginations. But with representation across the board having made rapid improvements and the creation of Steam making way for indie games, now everybody and their mum is playing some form of video game. So what does that mean for LGBT+ gay(mers)? We find out.

Evan Davis interviewed Ian McKellen on the #QueerAF podcast at National Student Pride 2019 at the University of Westminster, discussing his lifetime achievements and relationship with the LGBT community.

They spoke about #MeToo, chemsex, drugs, his coming out, the #MeToo movement and empowered the young LGBT+ audience.

The event took place on February 23rd at the non-profit organizations, now five-year-long residency, Westminster Marylebone campus.

Davis and McKellen hosted a live-stream of #QueerAF the National Student Pride podcast.

In conversation, McKellen proposed to Evan Davis they speak about chemsex. Otherwise known as getting high and horny or party and play – those who take part in chemsex do so to change the sex they are having with a so-called ‘holy trinity’ of drugs.

McKellen spoke about when he first tried a joint at the age of 30, with Evan Davis adding that ‘drugs were much weaker back then’.

The audience at National Student Pride were enthralled by Ian with his re-tellings of his pursuits to join the theatre as “one of the reasons I became a professional actor is because I learned that I could meet queers in the British theatre” and admitting “I just wish when I was younger I could have been myself”.

McKellen got many a laugh with his unrelenting wit, gesticulating at one point about “drawings of genitalia in public bathrooms”.

The conversation also looked at various aspects of McKellen's life:

- His coming out story

- How Margaret Thatcher’s Section 28 Law made him the activist he is today and how the queer scene in the theatre was what first attracted him to the profession

- His advice to young LGBT+ students

- Holding Elijah Wood’s hand while he got a tattoo during the filming of Lord of the Rings

- The #MeToo movement

On Me Too he says:

'Well frankly, I’m waiting for someone to accuse me of something, and me wondering whether they’re not telling the truth and me having forgotten (pointing to his head) you know.

But with the couple of names you’ve mention, people I’ve worked with, both of them were in the closet. And hence all their problems as people and their relationships with other people, if they had been able to be open about themselves and their desires, they wouldn’t have started abusing people in the way they’ve been accused.

Whether they should be forced to stop working. That’s debatable. I rather think that’s up to the public. Do you want to see someone who has been accused of something that you don’t approve of again? If the answer’s no, then you won’t buy a ticket, you won’t turn on the television. But there may be others for who that’s not a consideration.

And it’s difficult to be exactly black and white.'

What happened the night of the Stonewall Riots? We tell the story with Historical Homos

June 1969. New York City. It’s illegal to serve gays alcohol. It’s illegal for gays to dance with one another. Bars and clubs are routinely raided. Including the now infamous, Stonewall Inn. The riots that ensued over a week on Christopher Street ignited and catapulted forward the modern LGBT+ rights movement today.

But how much do you know about what happened that night? What does it mean for your queer people and their own activism today?

This week Sebastian Hendra from @HistoricalHomos joins us to tell the story of everything that happened not only on the night of the first riots, but the first year after the Stonewall Inn riots.Plus we are joined by host campus of #StudentPride – th University of Westminster's LGBTI society rep Nikki Hayden and Pride in London's Rhammel O'Dwyer Afflick to discuss what the events that fateful week mean to young LGBT+ people today.

I'm a gay dancer, but I'm not happy with my body

This young gay guy is not happy about the way he looks, something that is not easy when you used to be a dancer. And he is not alone, body image issues are a big issue in the LGBT+ community. In today's episode, podcaster and former dancer Martin Joesph finds out if it's possible to overcome negative feelings about his body image, and talks about his eating disorder – and learns how to feel happy about his body. We followed 15 LGBT+ young people who slept rough for the first time

After a busy few week’s at National Student Pride HQ. We’re taking a short two week break to recoup, relax and then bring you the second half of season two.

But we do have something for you today in this minisode: It's the story of 15 young people who raised an amazing £2600 pounds for UK LGBT homeless youth charity Albert Kennedy trust charity. They went to the RVC college in Kings Cross to do this in a safe place, toilets and even a warm room if they got cold. But all 15 of them stayed outside, on yoga mats and slept on the floor. Charlie who you’ll remember from season one of the podcast took part, and this is her diary of the night.
