La Mansarda, an amazing cultural events company is organising a fantastic festival this Saturday the 27th of July at Smock Alley Theatre in Dublin. It's an amazing opportunity to enjoy some performances from wonderful artists and at the same time get to meet people from all over the world who are based in Dublin.

I loved the idea of this festival and decided to interview some of the artists performing on the day. This episode is a conversation with Santierra & Los Protones Errantes. Incredible musicians who perform in their native tongue and can bring any room to life. We chatted about their musical journey in Dublin and how they ended up performing together.

The revenue from the ticket sales will be equally split: half to support the arts, therefore for artists performing, and half to support EMERGENCY NGO.

I found this chat really inspiring. Harry is a guy who doesn’t give up, who knows what it takes to make something of themselves and is incredibly honest about the ups and downs that come with that type of journey. Whether you’re moving to a new country for a fresh start, trying to start a little business or side hustle, or looking to follow a passion, I recommend having a listen to what Harry has to say. There’s wisdom there and I for one was able to take quite a lot from this.

Over the course of the last year, I’ve had the pleasure of talking to so many different people from all over the world. They’ve made me laugh and even sometimes cry but ultimately our guests have inspired me and taught me a much more beautiful perspective on life.

Next year in 2024, I hope to continue the A Life in Dublin project, but to push it a little bit more so that it is benefitting as many people as possible. Our events that we run on a monthly basis have been incredible and I think the presence of a safe social space in Dublin, for people from all backgrounds is more important than ever. And I want this to be done in an Irish way. A way in which we can celebrate being in Ireland whilst at the same time celebrating the multicultural nature of Dublin as well. I’m excited about what is to come… and I hope you can stick with me on this journey to see where it ends up!

In celebration of that Irishness, today I’m going to share an exert from one of our most popular episodes of the year. Around about a year ago I found out that Arthur Guinness, famed creator of the black stuff, got married in the former church, current restaurant and bar, located on Mary Street in Dublin 1. Despite my many visits to this bar, I had no idea of this little piece of history which happened right in Dublin City Centre. Let’s start with the image of a man who basically vanished off the face of the earth for a number of years before he finally reappeared walking across the border from China to Vietnam with no possessions and essentially no identity. This man went on to garner a huge following and fought a revolution in his Country that had repercussions internationally. The man I speak of Ho Chi Minh.

My friend Nghia, a Vietnamese stand-up comic, spoke to me about the life and character of the person who had a number of different names in his life but became known as Ho Chi Minh, or the enlightened one. We avoid talking too deeply about politics in this conversation as I was more interested in learning about the type of person who could achieve such things in his life.

Ireland has been an independent country for just over one hundred years now and in that time perhaps we as a nation have looked to both the US and the UK in terms of how to structure and develop our society. Some might say, that in doing so, we have lost a bit of our own cultural identity and so the question is what does it truly mean to be Irish?

Mollie, our guest today, teaches the Irish language online and has over 100k followers on Instagram. We talk about why the Irish language is such a dividing topic in Ireland, it’s huge cultural significance and whether or not it might be the key to unlocking the true Irish identity.

Ligia from Italy - Living a selfless life

She spends her days working as an intensive care nurse and in her spare time organises events to promote artists from all backgrounds and cultures to raise money for different charities. I won’t say much more other than I personally find her an inspiration and that Dublin is without doubt a better place because of her presence here.

Bríd from Kilkenny - Discovering how culture, our environment and the unknown influence music

They say what’s for you, won’t pass you by… A concept which inspired a lyric and an amazing song aptly named , pass me by, by Bríd Lyons from County Kilkenny in the South East of Ireland.

The older I get, the more seriously I take these little proverbial cliches and myself and Bríd chat a little about the mystic nature of the lives we’re living.

We also delve into the inspiration behind her music and the Celtic influences that have found their way into her more recent work.

Brian McMahon from Ireland - The evolution of culture in Ireland

Brian McMahon comes from Dundalk in County Louth, just north of Dublin. 13 years ago, not so long after Brian’s father passed away, he digitalised a family photograph from the 1960’s, and to his delight was amazed by the quality of the newly digitalised image but also the nostalgia that he had managed to encapsulate online. Since then, Brian has digitalised over 3000 images, adverts and articles of Dublin and Ireland, posting them on his blog; Brand New Retro or in his monthly column in Totally Dublin magazine.

For a long time I’ve wanted to talk to someone about how the culture of Dublin has changed and evolved over the years, and when I got to know Brian, I thought he was the perfect guy to speak to. We chat about music, nightlife, opportunities and a lot more.

Pablo & The Foreigners from Spain, Ireland, Argentina and Italy - Follow your passion and find your community

In this episode we are joined by the incredible Pablo and The Foreigners. Angelica, Javier, Juan and Pablo (aka Paul) were brought together in the city of Dublin by their shared passion for music. Despite all coming from very different backgrounds, Argentina, Spain, Italy and Ireland, they formed their community and without doubt have made the most out of their time here. I take inspiration from their story as they are an amazing example of people who put faith in their passion and allowed it to blossom into wonderful friendships and without doubt some amazing memories that they will have for the rest of their lives.

If it’s true that at the end of it all, the only thing we are left with is the memories we have created, then I choose to look up to these guys as my example. Colm from Dublin - How Ireland shaped me as a musician

Can you think back to a time when you were younger or perhaps in more recent times when you had to stand up in front of a group of people and perform something? Whether it be a poem, a song, a presentation or whatever it is, holding your composure doesn’t come easy to us all. In fact, Im sure we can all admit that we’ve suffered from nerves at some point in our lives. This is what fascinates me about talking to people like Colm. A professional musician who’s toured all over the world, and yet he to admits to experiencing the odd bout of performance anxiety. What was really refreshing about my chat with Colm was that he doesn’t put overcoming this anxiety down to increased self-esteem or we’ll say, mental tricks, he puts it all down to hard work and discipline. Practice until it’s more difficult to make a mistake than it is to perform perfectly. I really admire this about Colm and other performing artists. It’s so easy to forget the countless hours that goes into what can seem like an effortless performance. Colm tells me more about where this discipline comes from and he’s fostered it. We also chat about Dublin and Ireland and how these places have shaped him as a musician and many other topics.

The Accidental Rapper from Cork - making music that makes a difference

Fouad and Samar from Lebanon - What it means to be Lebanese

Sometimes when we think of a place we can have preconceived notions of what that place may or may not be like. Whether it’s pictures of sunny beaches, war, famine, economic prosperity or horrific poverty, our perspective of a place is usually tainted by the images and narratives that are fed to us in the media. Perhaps Lebanon is victim to this phenomenon and so when I met Fouad and Samar I jumped at the chance to chat to them so that I could learn more about their background and what it means to be Lebanese. Of course, we talk about how they have ended up here in Dublin as well but selfishly I pressed to know and learn more about Lebanese culture and life.

Caoi de Barra from Ireland - A Rising Star in the Irish Music Scene

Ireland is a very small Country perched on the West of Europe, which is well-known for a number of things but where we have always punched well above our weight was in the music domain.

Our guest today, Caoi de Barra is a seriously talented musician with a phenomenal voice. We chat to her about the journey she has taken to become a professional musician, her creative process and the importance of community. Caoi is based in Berlin and gives us a good insight into the different culture that exists around creativity and art between Germany and Ireland.

Mark and Eoin - Celebrating the 40 year anniversary of U2's album 'War'

Ireland’s biggest ever rock band, U2, released one of their most iconic album’s, entitled War, way back in 1983. To commemorate the 40 year anniversary of this album myself and Eoin decided to have a chat about the album itself and U2 in general.

Somehow or another we got a little bit off topic and started asking ourselves who has aged better, Bono or Tom Cruise but we did get a good grip on what the album War meant for U2 and how it propelled them into the stadium rock legends that they inevitably became.

Annie from Germany - exploring the poetry of Dublin's creative scene

Annie arrived in Dublin from Berlin in 2019 to study a masters in creative writing. Luckily she was able to enjoy Dublin in all of its vibrancy for 6 months before we had to batten down the hatches and enter lockdown. We don’t talk about the C word or what that experience was like for Annie as I think we all know the answers to those type of questions. We do, however, chat about what life has been like since the rebirth of society in early 2022. Annie tells us about her processes as an artist, primarily a poet and how she has found a community of like minded creatives here in the City. In this case, Father Ted rode that wave from the mid 1990’s all the way to current day Ireland.

Myself and Eoin chat about how Father Ted triggered verbal meme’s before that was even a thing and whether or not the Father Ted phenomenon will continue to exist into the future as the Irish zeitgeist begins to change.

Luke from Dublin - a journey of healing through music.

Every now and then we meet people who are different. Different in a way that you can say to yourself, I’m so happy I had the chance to meet this person, because, from a very selfish point of view, the time I spent with them made me feel good about myself and about those around me. Luke is one of those people. We met at one of our live podcasts where we were lucky enough to enjoy some of his music, but also the energy he creates when he plays. On a normal Monday evening, he had us all singing along to hooky songs that we had only just heard for the first time. That, in and of itself, is a skill and talent that not everyone can claim. Madeline from US - From living in Paris to the Irish stage: Madeline’s creative adventure.

After spending some time in Paris, Madeline decided to make the move to Dublin thanks to a good job offer, but most of all, because it represented a new adventure. She made sure the adventure didn’t stop once she arrived on Irish soil though, as she rediscovered her passion for acting and subsequently began performing stand-up comedy here in the capital City. We delve into her creative process and what motivates her as a writer, an actor and a stand-up comic. She tells us about her time growing up between New York, Connecticut and Austin and we chat a little bit about how Ireland relates to other countries. As a pre-warning, this episode did not come without it’s technical difficulties. Towards the very end of our conversation my laptop died a sudden death only to be revived again by the incredible invention of a charger. My apologies for the abrupt stop and restart of our conversation at the end but I was over the moon that we hadn’t lost our conversation completely cos this is a good one. This episode of the podcast is a little bit different. It’s intended to shed light on some of the incredible creativity and art that is coming out of Ireland at the moment.

I am most definitely not an expert in the realm of creativity, even less so to highlight what’s good or bad about a certain song or book or whatever. But, I’m already way out of my depth with this podcast, so I said, why not make things worse for myself and try to add a new little series of episodes in order to keep things varied and to keep things interesting.

From an even more selfish point of view, I decided to ask a good friend of mine to join in me in the series so that we now have a good excuse to keep in touch with each other on a more regular basis. Eoin, as you’ll hear in this episode, comes from Cork but lives in Copenhagen in Denmark.

So a big thanks to them and to all the people who came along to the show. Thales from Brazil - taking responsibility for your happiness

Thales arrived in Dublin in 2017 and like so many who have arrived on these shores, has had many ups and downs throughout his journey here. Thales has a unique perspective on life and his ability to get through hard times whilst still maintaining a positive and focused attitude is something which I personally find very inspiring. On top of this he’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever met. In this episode he tells us about how he worked as a deliveroo rider and as a bar back whilst studying English when he first arrived in Ireland. Fast forward to five years later and he’s working as a developer in Dublin and the host of his own podcast, in which he has episodes in English and Portuguese. Celeste is an actor from Venezuela who came to Europe in 2019. Her story reflects the times of crisis which exist in Venezuela but also how friendship and community can be reason for hope. Her way out of Venezuela was a ticket bought for her by her cousin, who was living in England at the time. Celeste received a message from her cousin which read, I don’t know what you’re gonna do, but I bought you a ticket and you’re leaving to Europe in 3 days. Celeste jumped at the opportunity and grabbed it with both hands. In this podcast she tells us about her journey and experiences in England and Ireland so far and what her hopes are for the future. He’s a very well-known guy in the Brazilian community abroad as he is the host of The Bolder podcast, which has almost 15k subscribers on YouTube. Jess from Mexico - pursuing your dream and how to get your Visa in Ireland

Jess initially came to Ireland, despite not knowing a lot about it, to learn English and to improve her career opportunities. As she researched more about Ireland she got more and more excited about her life here but she became disheartened when she learned that she would not be permitted to work in her profession (Robotics - control and automation) due to the fact that she could only attain a work (part-time) and study Visa. Despite these difficulties, she kept her dream front and centre in her mind. Her success, like many stories of success, did not happen in a straight line. She lived through many ups and downs and thought of giving up on numerous occasions. Her story highlights how difficult it is for people who move to Ireland from outside of the EU to work in something which they are qualified to do, and along with that comes many of the psychological and financial stresses. Thankfully, Jess has now attained a working Visa which has allowed her to a get a great job with a multi-national company here in Dublin. If you need inspiration and an example of someone who has managed to create a good life for themselves in Ireland despite many bureaucratic issues, we throughly recommend giving this episode a listen. Tom from Zimbabwe - from law student to barrister in Ireland, shark attacks in the Pacific Ocean, growing up in Zimbabwe, life in Ireland and more

It was an absolute pleasure to talk to Tom and to learn about his life story so far. He tells us about his childhood growing up on a farm in Zimbabwe and his travels around world. He worked on a super yacht in Southeast Asia as a dive instructor and got on really well with the Irish doctors onboard the boat. For that reason, he decided to change his scenery completely and move to Dublin as he thought he might really enjoy it. He began studying law here in Ireland (and apparently really enjoys Irish law!) and is now working as a barrister. He's a great character and I must say that this one is well worth the watch. Enjoy!

Auriane grew up in South Africa with two French parents and talks to us about what it was like to grow up as a third culture kid (someone who has grown up in a culture which is different to the culture of their parents).
