The free speech first principle quandary

So after some digging it seems our boy Voltaire didn't actually say "I wholly disapprove of what you say—and will defend to the death your right to say it.".....it's an aphorism from a book written over 100 years ago, a Voltarianism one could say, but the principle remains, so I get into the Kneecap debate even more in this episode, asking where have all the people been for the last few years on the debate who are now posting IstandwithKneecap? as governments brought in more stringent speech codes and plenty of other bands fell foul of censorship and cancellation? so is it all just tribal? and do they have the right to say as they please? let's get into it....and the complex conundrums involved in analysing it......

Bloodbark is a project of unknown origin made by an unknown number of people embracing that nature is the creator, storyteller and the artist behind it all. This idea sprouted with the 2018’s album Bonebranches, where no human presence tarnished the art. The human aspect remained hidden, covered by snow while nature and emotion sang across beautiful landscapes and whispered verses with melodies to every listener, so it welcomed them into its utterly cold embrace of winter to lull into a cozy and familiar slumber. In the same vein Sacred Sound of Solitude banishes all humanity and captures the snow, spirits and creatures

in a world that was born anew. And there, little stories form like snowflakes within forests and mountains to bring out majestic melodies intertwined with harsh winds and thundering avalanches. It dwells into emotional journeys of spirits, battles of elements and disintegration of living beings into eternal nature.

While Bloodbark started as a perfect representation of the Majestic in Atmospheric Black Metal, it now evolved into a crisp, cold and yet more complex distinction of the Majestic. STOP THIEF!!! Across the world copyright law is quietly changing or being changed, why? AI models have to learn from somewhere and be trained on existing art. Yet recognising this or compensating artists is a pain in the proverbials for governments who want investment in their countries and economies, so copyright laws are being challenged and changed. A group of artists released a silent album last week in protest, calling it theft!! I discuss this, how artists have very little ability to stand in the way of digital progress. Beginning however with my own trials and tribulations involved in trying to prove to a bot that I am who I am and I own the things I made back before the internet!!

Why was there so much violence at gigs in the old days?

A few weeks ago I posted on my Instagram (nemtheanga_primordial) some old ticket stubs from the mid 80s to the early 90s and sure enough the violence that surrounded those shows got mentioned in the comments, so I thought I'd revisit that, the reasons why it was happening, a stabbing at a punk gig in 1977 which cast a shadow over gigs in the State for years and I ask, was it just a British isles and Irish thing? if so, why? How it stopped, why gigs now are often just corporate and empty feeling and whisper it....those were the great days, the classic gigs and we wouldn't have it any other way....

Conflict in the Middle East

This may be a fools errand but Episode 180 is a complex and controversial one, maybe I should stay out of it but we've tackled difficult subjects before on the podcast and I did one on the war in Ukraine so this is my attempt to explain the historical context behind the current conflict in the Middle East. It's not full of hot takes, although there is some spice here and there, but more an attempt to create some kinda timeline, and look at some of the reasons why we are in the state we are in right now. It's not meant to take one particular side over the other, and I realise of course this is not what people want....they want good vs. evil binary reactionism but that's not the style here on Agitators Anonymous, so you'll hear about the Bible to the Balfour declaration!

My brain is like Swiss cheese....is about the most insightful thing Episode 179 offers you but I try and get to grips with Joan of Arc, from a mention in a Celtic Frost lyric all the way to a whole verse in The Smiths 'Bigmouth strikes again', where the title of todays podcast came from all the way to.....well being one of the most iconic figures in modern history. Her story is one of conquering adversity, kicking the patriarchy squarely in the balls, crowing a King, lifting a siege, inspiring a divided medieval nation with her religious devotion, dressing as she god damn pleased and ultimately dying a young grim and sexy death perfect for horror film adaptation!

Crashing back down to earth

This is the first podcast in weeks, I took a short break while on tour, so I look back on that, how you end up living in this artificial bubble on tour, which almost feels like a pre-internet period! You have limited news and interaction online and end up forming real life social friendships and bonds, and then after a whirlwind few weeks you are back on the couch staring out the window at the rain. This is one thing but then the real news out there in this deep dark world not only bursts your bubble but stomps it into the ground, smashes it to dust and then sets fire to the dust. I wisely or unwisely step into the Middle Eastern situation to round things off with and try and place it in context with comments Irish people got back in the day....among loads of other dumb and random observations. I lost a lot of braincells on this last tour....and I barely had enough to go round

Final tour preparations

With the Ultima Ratio tour starting in two days across Europe with Primordial just before Paradise Lost and with Harakiri for the sky and Omnium Gatherum opening, this podcast is about my final preparations before the tour. It is our first support tour for about ten years perhaps even more, so what's different? Playing in the second last slot is a very different proposition, short time slot, less logistics, less of a financial burden when you are not the headliner, the night does not depend necessarily on you, you also have to go out there wanting to and expecting to win new fans, people who aren't familiar with the band, it's a different ball game! So let's get into that, and some of my super mundane boring tips for being on tour!

The Haitian Revolution

The Irish potato famine

This one is a big one and long overdue, I look at the Irish potato famine which began in 1845 and carried on realistically until the early 1850's, Ireland's population was almost halved, over a million people died and a million and a half displaced around the world, often crossing vast oceans in unseaworthy vessels called the coffin ships, which is where the Primordial song takes it's name from. It had been a long time since I raked over the history and found some things I'd forgotten and others I never knew, the effects of our greatest tragedy still echo deeply in Irish society and it arguably took the country about 150 years to recover, if it ever really did. Join me as Iook into our dark past.

Last week in the studio is trying to prep lyrics, study arrangements, avoid getting sick or a flu before singing, summoning the muse for an hour or two then sitting around pondering life's important issues, which is a better album 'Powerslave' or 'Somewhere in Time'? Attempting to get the artwork and aesthetic in line and finalise the running order. The sad demise of the record store

E 110 is about how the record store formed a generation of kids, it worked as their social hub but also cast their love of music and for many a lifetime of collecting music but especially vinyl. How sub cultures back in the day were your peer group, through which you dealt with your raging hormones and sexuality along with your attitudes to life, coping and being a young adult. How your parents record collection was so important. Does that exist now? do kids get passed down anything other than redundant incompatible files? do kids even relate to musical subculture? AA certainly doesn't have the answer but he does a lot of shouting at clouds about the subject

Episode 109 primarily about the suicide of Trevor Strnad the singer of the Black Dahlia Murder aged 41, what this represents in not only the metal scene but also in the wider world, the epidemic of young men taking their lives, did the pandemic as one youtube commentator state kill the guy, so AA looks back at a podcast recorded during the pandemic about coping with lockdown, but also depression and the dark impulses that drive us sometimes. Male suicide ain't a sexy topic that gets the algorithm moving nor is it a popular cause in the culture war/debate but this podcast deals with that, why are so many people feeling such strain, and some simple remedies for trying to cope with the black dog when it comes barking no matter what gender you are!!! The person you least expect it from might be the person struggling the most so reach out today with a 'hey buddy what's up'......

normal service of returning to political, social, cultural commentary is being threatened! but until then this one goes through our strange ordeal at the border of Sweden, strip searched and a rather over zealous effort on behalf of the cops to humiliate and intimidate our tour company, needless to say it didn't work and the rock rolled on, these are not the droids you're looking for! and end up with a small discussion on why we all don't have to have a hot take, you can keep your opinions to yourself if you wish!, and that in my opinion we ain't gonna get a summer free from emergency to wind down! the powers that be are gonna keep the dial in the red!!
