Alcohol Alert, February 2020: Ahead of the 2020 Budget, an analysis of alcohol duties from the Institute of Alcohol Studies has found that far from the protestations of critics, the poorest households in the UK would stand to benefit most from any increases, especially if subsequent revenue is invested in expanding and strengthening the provision of health services.

Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield Alcohol Research Group Rob Pryce gives his thoughts on the report at the seminar where author Aveek Bhattacharya presented its findings.

The survey behind the report ‘Alcohol guidelines for pregnant women: Barriers and enablers for midwives to deliver advice’ – highlights the inconsistency in official guidance that led to four out of ten midwives stating that they were not aware of the actual content of the 2016 alcohol guidelines on pregnancy.

Alcohol Alert, July 2017: Five years after Scotland legislated for Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP), judges at the UK Supreme Court in London have just concluded their latest deliberations over whether the legislation is incompatible with European Union law and therefore unlawful under the Scotland Act 1998. It has twice been ruled legal in Scottish courts during that period. So why hasn’t MUP been implemented yet? We met with Dr Peter Rice to help us chart the history of one of the most hotly contested pieces of legislation in the UK in recent years.

This was a question four prominent research experts grappled with during a lunchtime seminar titled ‘Walking the advocacy tightrope: What role can researchers play in the alcohol policy process?’, a highlight of this year’s Kettil Bruun Society (KBS) symposium in Sheffield.

This particular session was hosted by the Institute of Alcohol Studies, with contributions from Tim Stockwell, Michael Livingston, Pia Mäkelä, and Colin Angus, who all spoke frankly about their experiences as researchers in the alcohol policy field.

Scots Minimum Pricing case referred to European Court of Justice

Alcohol Alert, June 2014: Eric Carlin, Director of Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP), explains the ins and outs of a court decision referring the case of Scottish legislation on minimum unit pricing to Europe.

In May 2012, the Scottish Government passed the Alcohol (Minimum Pricing) (Scotland) Act at Holyrood, with scant opposition from MSPs across the political spectrum. Two years on, the law is still to be implemented, due to a challenge led by the Scotch Whisky Association over the question of its legality, which has recently been referred from the Court of Session in Edinburgh to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.
