Rizpah - A Testimony of Unfailing Vigilance

Are you suffering or grieving today? Are you feeling hurt and alone perhaps thinking that no one has had to suffer quite like you have? Are you wondering if God Himself has forsaken you?

If so, please know you’re not alone. The Bible is full of women who went through unspeakable tragedies. Today we look at one of those women. Rizpah, concubine of King Saul, was the victim of national gossip and then watched helplessly as her two sons were hanged for the sins of their father. And yet, through it all, she held her head high and reacted with dignity and strength.

Mephibosheth's Nurse - A Hero Who Fell Down on the Job

Have you ever made a mistake that caused harm to someone else? Did you have good intentions but fell short of what you were trying to do? What happens when despite our best efforts, we still fail?

In today’s episode of All God’s Women we look at Mephibosheth’s nurse, a woman who acted heroically but tripped and fell in the midst of her heroic act. The impact of her tumble forever changed the life of her young charge.

Mephibosheth’s nurse is an unnamed woman who is mentioned just once in the Bible.

In 2 Samuel 4:4 we’re told, “Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel; and his nurse took him up and fled. And it happened, as she made haste to flee, that he fell and became lame. His name was Mephibosheth.”

Because of the nurse’s courage in grabbing him and hiding him away, he was later able to take his rightful place at the king’s table.

His nurse never got to witness the fruits of her effort. All she saw was her failure. But God used her to save an heir to the kingdom.

We may be like that nurse. All around us we see danger. Those around us are at risk of dying. They’re wondering around in confusion with no idea where to turn.

It’s easy for us to panic, to say there’s nothing we can do. To be fearful of doing the wrong thing and making matters worse.

God doesn’t expect us to be perfect. He knows our weaknesses and frailties. But if we keep our eyes on Him and grab those around us, determined to lead them to eternal life, He can take our humble efforts and do a mighty work through them.

We may never live to see the fruits of our labor, but that doesn’t mean our work is in vain. Even if we stumble over the right words. If we fear we’ve only made things worse, God will reward our efforts.

I challenge you to look around you. See those who are lost and seeking help. Be there for them, helping to guide them in the way that leads to life.

If you’re wondering what to say or do, take it to God. Ask Him to speak through you. Use Romans 6:23 as your basis. Tell them your story of how you came to know Christ and how He’s worked in your life.

Don’t delay. Commit today to making sure that when you get to heaven, you bring a crowd with you.

The Medium of En Dor - An Unexpected Lesson

Have you noticed how kind and caring the world has become? Some of the most ungodly individuals are claiming to be the most compassionate, while Christians are portrayed as judgmental and hateful. What does all this mean?

In today’s episode we look at one of the most unusual stories in the Bible. We meet the Medium of En Dor, a kind woman engaged in a dangerous profession. From this most unlikely source, we can gain insight as to how we as Christians should be treating those around us.

In 1 Samuel 28, we find King Saul desperately seeking direction for his life. The prophet Samuel was dead, and when Saul called out himself to God, the Lord didn’t answer him. So in true Saul fashion, he took matters into his own hands

Although he had driven out the spiritists from the land, his servants told him about a woman in nearby En Dor who conjured up the dead.

The woman of En Dor was not a godly woman. She was a pagan woman who made a living as a soothsayer. We’re not sure if she was actually dealing in the occult or if she was a fake, pretending to talk to the dead, but really just deceiving unsuspecting individuals. Either way, she’s not someone we would think of when we think of godly women, and yet, we can learn much from her.

We meet Abigail in 1 Samuel 25. We’re told that she was beautiful and intelligent, but she was married to Nabal, a rich man who was harsh and evil.

Michal - A Princess With a Tragic Ending

As a young girl did you dream of being a princess? Did you read fairy tales and think if you could only marry your Prince Charming, everything would be perfect? Or maybe now, do you watch Hallmark movies, especially the ones with undercover princes from obscure countries, and wish that you could have that kind of life?

In today’s episode of All God’s Women we look at Michal, a true princess who married her Prince Charming, who later became king. And yet, Michal’s life was anything but happily ever after. In fact, it was her princess attitude that led to her tragic downfall.

Many of the women we’ve studied have been limited to a verse or two. Michal’s story, on the other hand, is splattered throughout 3 books of the Bible - 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, and 1 Chronicles.

Michal was the younger daughter of King Saul, a nervous king who was especially jealous of David, the shepherd boy who had just defeated Goliath, a Philistine warrior.

Ichabod's Mom The Glory Departed

We’ve covered many women who inspire us to greatness because of their faith. Today we look at a woman who teaches us through her lack of faith. I wish we knew her name, but though we know her husband’s name, her father-in-law’s name, and her son’s name, God didn’t seem fit to share with us her name. Perhaps it’s because as a nameless woman she represents so many women filling the pews in churches every Sunday.

We find today’s woman in 1 Samuel. She gets 4 verses in the Bible, and all of those are related to the birth of her son. So who was she and why was she included?

Hannah - A Model Pray-er

We tend to read stories like Hannah’s and think that all we have to do is pray hard enough, and God will give us the desires of our heart. The problem is that we’ve got it all mixed up. We’re so busy making out our shopping list of prayer requests and then wondering why God doesn’t give us what we’re asking for. But that’s not how prayer works.

Prayer is emptying ourselves and baring our soul to God, coming to Him completely broken, seeking not selfish pleasures, but allowing Him to open our eyes to what it is that He wants for us. When we give ourselves over to Him and to his desires, that is when we truly start to see answered prayer.

Ruth - A Simple Woman With a Servant's Heart

In the All God’s Women Bible study group I asked each of the women to share their favorite woman of the Bible. At the top of the list was Ruth. Hers is a story that inspires women of all ages. But who was Ruth? What is it about her that distinguishes her and endears her to everyone.

I’ve got to admit, up until now, I never understood the appeal of Ruth. She seemed so simple and unexciting. I much preferred Naomi who had more spunk. But as I’ve delved into the story of Ruth, I realize it’s her simplicity that makes her so extraordinary.

Rahab - A Woman at the Right Place at the Right Time

We’ve all heard of Rahab. She’s one of the bad girls of the Old Testament, a harlot, a prostitute in a pagan city. Many Christians find it disturbing that this woman of ill repute is included in Jesus’ genealogy. They argue that surely she was merely an innkeeper. But that’s not what the Bible tells us. The word used to describe her can only mean one thing, and it’s not an innkeeper.

So why her? Why did God not only use her to help save the Hebrews but then go on to include her in the lineage of His son?

Podcast Contest

Earlier this week we released our tenth episode of All God’s Women.

So far, we’ve studied some pretty amazing women.

We kicked off at the beginning with Eve, a woman given a command, a choice, and consequences.

Next, was Mrs. Noah who experienced the first quarantine.

Sarah was a woman with a plan.

Hagai may have felt alone, but she was not forgotten by God.

Rebekah lied and lost.

Rachel and Leah competed for the love of their husband.

Two midwives chose life over death.

Moses’ two moms each helped prepare him for the task God had before him.

Miriam let pride lead to her fall.

And the five daughters of Zelophehad took a stand for women’s rights.

Daughters of Zelophehad - They Fought For Women's Rights

Unless you’ve spent a lot of time studying the Old Testament, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tizrah. They’re first introduced in Numbers 27 when Moses is conducting the second census of Israel. The purpose of the census was to determine their military strength as well as to distribute the family land grants in Canaan.

At the time, women held no property rights. When a man died, his inheritance went to his sons. If he had no sons, it went to his brothers. But the five daughters of Zelophehed felt this was unfair. So together as a group, they went to Moses to express their concerns in order to change the laws.

The story of Zelophehad’s daughters confirms that God treasures women. He doesn’t see us as second class citizens. He knows our name, He supports our right to be heard, and He listens to what we have to say. He loves us, each and every one of us.

Perhaps you’ve not been feeling very loved. For that matter, you feel like you’re not being heard. I encourage you to take your concerns to God. It’s ok to express your frustrations. It’s alright to let Him know you’re upset. He wants to hear from you. He’s waiting to hear from you.

Miriam - Pride Went Before Her Fall

In today’s episode of All God’s Women we look at Miriam, a woman who worshiped God with all her being, but who let pride and arrogance mar her ministry. She learned the hard way God’s thoughts on pride.

Miriam was blessed to be a leader in a time when women had little or no authority. She was one of only 5 women in the Old Testament to be called a prophetess, and she was the first. It was an honor bestowed by God, but with that position came a greater level of accountability. Because the other women looked to Miriam for wisdom and guidance, it was especially important that she be an acceptable role model. When she got cocky, God had to put her in her place.

It’s easy for us to become sanctimonious. We can mistake it for being saintly or sanctified. But God is not fooled. He knows our hearts. He knows when we’re truly striving to serve Him and when we’re merely trying to act superior.

And we need to know that God will not tolerate pride among His leaders. When we start to think we know best, when we try to upsurp power from those who have authority over us, when we engage others in our pettiness, God will get our attention, and it won’t be pretty.

Just as God humbled Miriam, He will humble us and we will never be the same again. It appears that Miriam learned her lesson. While she may never again have reached the heights that she enjoyed that day on the shores of the Red Sea, we know that Miriam continued on in her role with the Hebrew nation, and that she died a beloved woman.

How blessed we are that God is a God who disciplines, but who also forgives. No matter what we do, if we turn from our wicked ways and humble our hearts, and seek His face, He will hear our cries and forgive us our sins.

Moses' Two Moms - A Mother's Day Tribute to Moms and Stepmoms

I’m sure that in Jochobed’s plans for her son’s life, she never imagined co-parenting with an Egyptian princess, but look at how God used each of these women to impact his life. Jochobed provided the spiritual training, teaching him the ways of our Lord. But Pharaoh’s daughter also helped mold him, providing him a quality education and influence. God knew that Moses needed more than just one Hebrew mom. He needed the influence of both women in order to fulfill the mighty task God had in store for him.

How often do we think we know what our children need, when in reality, we have no clue? Fortunately for Moses, Jochobed was strong in her faith and trusted God with her beloved son. She allowed God to work in ways that made no sense to her, but took life day by day in obedience to Him even when that meant handing him over to a pagan princess. We, too, need to trust Him even when we don’t understand what He’s doing.

Just a note of clarification. last week I introduced voice actors and guest experts. I thought it would add to this podcast, but I’ve been blessed with a number of painfully honest friends and listeners who have confirmed what I suspected as I recorded and edited last week’s episode. The consensus is unanimous. It didn’t work. Apparently, people much prefer my solo style storytelling verses breaking it up with other people. So this week, we’re back to the original format.

Shiphrah and Puah - They Made the Right Choice

How do you respond to authority? Have you ever been asked you to do something that went against what you knew was right? Did you obediently follow? Did you resist? What DID you do?

In today’s episode of All God’s Women we look at Shiphrah and Puah, two midwives placed in a terrible position by their boss, the pharaoh of Egypt. To disobey his command meant they could be killed. To obey, however, meant they themselves would have to kill. As women positioned in a life and death situation, they chose life, even if it resulted in their own death.

I’m excited today to introduce a new format to All God’s Women. I’m adding actors to add voice to the scriptures, and I’m bringing in experts, other speakers, authors, and Bible teachers to add their thoughts about each of our Bible women. I think you’ll agree it add a new dimension to our studies.

Leah and Rachel - Contented or Clamorous

How do you react when life takes a turn in an unexpected and unwanted direction? When all your best laid plans are suddenly discarded, and the new normal is nothing like what you’d planned? Do you accept the new life, making the most of what you’ve been given, or do you resist, fighting it with every ounce of your being? Are you clamorous or contented?

In today’s episode of All God’s Women we look at Rachel and Leah, two sisters, caught up in a web of deceit by their father’s scheme, forced to live the rest of their lives as sister wives. Both were victims, but one moved on and made the best of a bad situation, and one remained a victim for the remainder of her days.
