THE SONG:

"Atlantic City" is a song written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen. The song first appeared on his 1982 album Nebraska. “Atlantic City” was released as a single in several countries and charted in Canada at #49 but was not issued as a single in the USA. Bruce released the song on the Nebraska album in September 1982, and since he didn’t tour for that album, he wouldn’t perform it live until almost two years later. When the Born in the USA Tour kicked off, “Atlantic City” featured prominently on the setlist from the very first show. Springsteen wrote in his Greatest Hits sleeve notes that he recorded "Atlantic City" in his bedroom "for $1,050 (the cost of the four-track Tascam recorder), mixed through an old Gibson guitar unit to a beat box". He provides the vocals, guitar, harmonica, and mandolin for the song. “Atlantic City” was the first Springsteen song to be made into a music video (not counting live-performance clips). “Son of a Preacher Man" is a song written and composed by American songwriters John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins and recorded by British singer Dusty Springfield in September 1968 for the album Dusty in Memphis. “Son of a Preacher Man" has been covered by many artists, including Elvis Presley, Foo Fighters and Natalie Merchant, but Dusty’s version has remained the most popular. It was her biggest hit, charting at #9 in the US and #10 in the UK. “Son of a Preacher Man" found a new audience when it was included on the soundtrack of Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 film Pulp Fiction. Aryiel is an actor, singer, and host who has performed all over the world. From running away with the circus to singing at the Sydney opera House to hosting burlesque shows in the heart of Hollywood, she has had quite the varied performance career. Forever having a deep love of musicals, she's performed in many musical comedies during her time at iO West and Second City Hollywood and just finished a run of "We Will Rock You" portraying the fierce Killer Queen. THE SONG: “Killer Queen" is a song by the British band Queen. It was written by lead singer Freddie Mercury and recorded for their third album Sheer Heart Attack in 1974. When released as a single, "Killer Queen" was Queen's breakthrough hit, reaching number two in the United Kingdom and number twelve in the United States. Mercury stated that the song is a fantasy, a product of his flamboyant writing style, and that he prefers people to interpret the lyrics themselves. THE SONG:

"Rocket Man (I Think It's Going to Be a Long, Long Time)", is a song written by English musician Elton John and songwriter Bernie Taupin and performed by John. “Rocket Man” was first performed live at Elton’s concert at the Royal Festival Hall on February 5, 1972…nearly two months before its release as a single in the UK. It was released on April 17th 1972 in the US, as the lead single to John's album Honkey Château. The song was released in the height of the Apollo Space Program missions when space travel was on everyone’s minds. Bernie Taupin wrote the song inspired by the Ray Bradbury story “The Rocket Man”, from his book The Illustrated Man. Taupin said “In that book, there was a story called “The Rocket Man”, which was about how astronauts in the future would become sort of an everyday job…so I kinda took that idea and ran with it.” Over the years, the song has become inexorably linked with Elton and became the title for his 2019 Biopic Rocketman. “Rocket Man” has been widely covered and sampled. THE SONG:

“Layla" is a song written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, originally recorded with their band Derek and the Dominos, as the thirteenth track from their only studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (1970). Its contrasting movements were composed separately by Clapton and Gordon. The piano part has also been controversially credited to Rita Coolidge, Gordon's girlfriend at the time. “Layla" has, since its release, experienced great critical and popular acclaim, and is often hailed as being among the greatest rock songs of all time. Two versions have achieved chart success, the first in 1972 and the second 20 years later as an acoustic Unplugged performance by Clapton. In 2004, "Layla" was ranked number 27 on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time” and the acoustic version won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. Clapton originally wrote "Layla" as a ballad, with lyrics describing his unrequited love for Boyd, but the song became a "rocker" when, according to Clapton, Duane Allman composed the song's signature riff. "Don't Stop Believin'" is a song by the American band Journey. It was released in October 1981. "Don't Stop Believin'" shares writing credits between the band's vocalist Steve Perry, guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist Jonathan Cain. The band fleshed out the song in the studio and then recorded the instrumental tracks in one take at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California. A top-10 worldwide hit in 1981, "Don't Stop Believin'" became Journey’s signature song and has continued to endure over the years. Decades after its release, in 2012 it became the best-selling digital track from the twentieth century, with over seven million downloads by 2017. Pete Gardner was born and raised in Scarsdale, New York. He moved to Chicago to pursue improv and studied at ImprovOlympic with Del Close. Pete was on a house team there for many years, then joined the group ED, which led to creating Jazz Freddy in 1992 at the Live Bait Theatre where he had a vision to do more patient, theatrical improv. He later began directing at Second City. Pete is known for his portrayal of Darryl on the CW's Crazy Ex-Girlfriend for 4 years, but has worked on many movies and TV shows throughout the years. "Mr. Bojangles" is a song written and originally recorded by American country music artist Jerry Jeff Walker for his 1968 album of the same title. Walker said he was inspired to write the song after an encounter with a street performer in a New Orleans jail. In Walker’s book Gypsy Songman, Walker tells the story: “One of the guys in the cell jumped up and said, ‘Come on, Bojangles. Give us a little dance.’ ‘Bojangles’ wasn’t so much a name as a category of itinerant street entertainer known back as far as the previous century. The old man said, ‘Yes, Hell yes.’ He jumped up, and started clapping a rhythm, and he began to dance. I spent much of that long holiday weekend talking to the old man, hearing about the tough blows life had dealt him, telling him my own dreams.” “Mr. Bojangles” was later recorded by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band for their 1970 album Uncle Charlie and his Dog Teddy. THE SONG:

"Mean" is a song written and recorded by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift for her third studio album, Speak Now (2010). At the 2012 Grammy Awards, “Mean" won Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance. The lyrics address the critics who questioned Swift's vocal ability following her live performances in 2009 and 2010. She was inspired by her detractors to write "Mean", explaining that although she acknowledged constructive criticism, she was bothered by critics who were "just being mean": "There's a line that you cross when you just start to attack everything about a person." Swift performed "Mean" for the first time as part of NBC’s 2010 Thanksgiving television special, which premiered on November 25, 2010. Taylor has never confirmed who "Mean" is about, but it is believed that she wrote it about longtime music critic and analyst Bob Lefsetz. There was so much speculation that the song was about Bob, he even wrote another piece titled That Taylor Swift Song where he analyzed the lyrics and argued that the song wasn't about him. THE SONG:

"Daydream Believer" is a song composed by American songwriter John Stewart shortly before he left the Kingston Trio. It was recorded by the Monkees, with Davy Jones singing the lead. The single reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in December 1967, remaining there for four weeks. It was the Monkees' third and last No.1 hit in the US. John Stewart wrote "Daydream Believer" as the third in a trilogy of songs about suburban life, recalling: "I remember going to bed thinking, 'What a wasted day — all I’ve done is daydream.' And from there I wrote the whole song. I never thought it was one of my best songs. Not at all". In 1979, "Daydream Believer" was recorded by Canadian singer Anne Murray, whose version reached No. 3 on the US country singles chart and No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song has been recorded by many others, including a 1971 version by Stewart. THE SONG:

“Clair de lune” is the third segment in Suite bergamasque, a four-movement composition for piano by French composer Claude Debussy. Debussy's idea came from a poem by Paul Verlaine in his collection entitled Fêtes Galantes, themselves inspired by the paintings of Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). Debussy set six of these poems to music, including “Clair de lune”. The piano piece dates originally from 1890 and was revised in 1905. “Clair de lune” means “moonlight”. This composition has become one of Debussy’s most famous and recognizable pieces, but he was known to dislike this piece himself. He thought of it as an immature work, and it probably didn’t help that so many people asked him to perform it whenever he played in public. “Clair de lune” is featured in many films including the Twilight films and Ocean’s Eleven. "Uptown Girl" is a song written and performed by American musician Billy Joel from his ninth studio album, An Innocent Man. It was released in September 1983 as the album's second single. "Uptown Girl" peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached number one in the United Kingdom, Joel’s only number-one hit in the UK. According to an interview with Howard Stern, Joel had originally titled the song "Uptown Girls", and it was conceived on an occasion when he was surrounded by Christie Brinkley, Whitney Houston and his then-girlfriend Elle MacPherson. According to numerous interviews with Joel, the song was initially written about his relationship with Macpherson but ended up also becoming about his soon-to-be wife, Brinkley. Both women were two of the most famous supermodels of the 1980s. Billy also said that the song was inspired by Frankie Valli's music style and the Four Seasons. Irish pop group Westlife also scored a number on UK hit with their cover of “Uptown Girl”. In December 1985, Princess Diana surprised her husband, Prince Charles, by appearing on stage with Wayne Sleep of the Royal Ballet and doing a choreographed dance to “Uptown Girl” at a charity gala in honor of Charles’ 37th birthday. THE SONG:

"Baker Street" is a single by the Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty, released in February 1978. "Baker Street" was included on Rafferty's second solo album, City to City (1978). It was his first album after the resolution of legal problems surrounding the breakup of his old band, Stealers Wheel, in 1975. The song is known for its prominent eight-bar saxophone riff, written by Rafferty and performed by Raphael Ravenscroft. Played as a break between verses, Billboard described it as "the most recognizable sax riff in pop music history". It is said to have been responsible for a resurgence in the sales of saxophones and their use in mainstream pop music and television advertising. Legend has it that Rafferty was long irked by the public’s assumption that Ravenscroft had written the riff himself. Rafferty's demo, with the riff played on guitar, was released on the 2011 reissue of City to City. In the liner notes, Rafferty's collaborator Rab Noakes wrote: "Let's hope [the demo] will, at last, silence all who keep on asserting that the saxophone player came up with the melody line." “bad guy” was written by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell and produced by Finneas. It is the fifth single from Eilish’s first studio album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? After waiting patiently at #2 behind "Old Town Road" for nine weeks, "bad guy" finally toppled Lil Nas X's record-breaking song to reach #1. In doing so, it broke the record for the longest a song spent in the runner-up position before climbing to the summit. On reaching the top of the Hot 100, Eilish became the first artist born in the 2000s to have a #1 hit. “bad guy” won Song of the Year at the 2020 Grammy Awards. Eilish also won Best New Artist and When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? won Album of the Year. Finneas won Producer of the Year. “Build Me Up Buttercup" is a song written by Mike d’Abo and Tony Macaulay and released by The Foundations in 1968, with Colin Young singing lead vocals. Young had replaced Clem Curtis in 1968, and this was the first Foundations hit on which he sang. d’Abo was the lead singer of Manfred Mann, and Macaulay was a successful songwriter who also wrote The Foundations hit “Baby Now That I’ve Found You.” “Build Me Up Buttercup" is featured in the 1998 romantic comedy film There’s Something About Mary, the pilot episode "Truth Be Told" from the first season of the ABC TV spy drama series Alias, and in a series of 2020–21 Geico commercials. The Crazy Mason Milkshake Bar has a Build Me Up Buttercup shake on its menu. It’s vanilla ice cream blended with Reese’s peanut butter sauce in a chocolate and peanut butter swirled jar with a peanut butter rim rolled in Mini Reese’s Pieces. THE SONG:

“Cat’s in the Cradle” is a 1974 folk-rock song by Harry Chapin. It was the opening track of his album Verities & Balderdash. It topped the charts when it was first released and remained Chapin’s sole No. 1 hit. The song has endured as a folk-rock classic, reemerging on television and film for nearly five decades. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011. Though “Cats in the Cradle” has been covered by numerous artists, including Yusuf Cat Steven’s 1977 rendition of “Cat’s Cradle,” Ugly Kid Joe’s 1992 cover became one of the most memorable. Released on the band’s debut America’s Least Wanted, “Cats in the Cradle” (title without the apostrophe) topped the charts internationally and peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100 in the U.S. The song has had numerous uses in film and TV shows and was used in The Office episode “St. Patrick’s Day” from season 6. THE SONG: “Mr. Tambourine Man" is a song written by Bob Dylan, released as the first track of the acoustic side of his March 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home. Bob Dylan wrote and recorded the original version of "Mr. Tambourine Man," but it was made famous by The Byrds, who took it to #1 in both the US and UK. The song hadn't been released when The Byrds learned it from a demo Dylan gave to their manager, Jim Dickson. The two versions were released just a few weeks apart: Dylan's on March 22, 1965, The Byrds' on April 12, 1965. The Byrds' recording of “Mr. Tambourine Man” was influential in popularizing the musical subgenres of folk rock and jangle pop. Dylan's song has four verses, of which the Byrds only used the second for their recording. Dylan's and the Byrds' versions have appeared on various lists ranking the greatest songs of all time, including an appearance by both on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 best songs ever. The song was co-written by Sir Paul McCartney and was the first to come from McCartney and Costello’s co-writing relationship. “Veronica” was co-produced by T-Bone Burnett and Kevin Killen and features McCartney on his iconic Höfner bass. “Veronica” has been Costello’s highest charting single to date, peaking at No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. He explained to NME in 1996: "As soon as you make a record, particularly if it becomes a big success, it doesn't belong to you anymore, it's that 'Wah Boo!' situation. I did this show with Steve (Nieve, Attraction's keyboardist), and I changed the key and the whole song changed completely. Suddenly I didn't have to think about the record. "Call Me The Breeze'' was written and originally recorded by guitarist J.J. Cale. "Call Me The Breeze '' appeared on Cale's first solo album, a 1971 release called Naturally. Lynyrd Skynyrd covered “Call Me The Breeze '' on their albums Second Helping (1974) and the live album One More from the Road (1976). Lynyrd Skynyrd decided to cover Cale’s song when guitarist Gary Rossington came up with a riff that distinguished it from the original. Of Skynyrd’s rendition of “Call Me the Breeze,” Cale said that it afforded him the money to have more freedom in how and when he made his music and was always honored when other artists covered his songs. "Call Me The Breeze'' was one of the few cover songs Skynyrd recorded. They recorded another J.J. Cale song, “Same Old Blues”, on their 1976 album Gimme Back My Bullets, and had plans to work with Cale again. Those plans never came to fruition after a 1977 plane crash killed three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Link to OfficialVideo

THE SONG:

“Everybody Wants to Rule the World” is a song by English rock band Tears for Fears from their second studio album “Songs From the Big Chair”. It was written by Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley and Chris Hughes. The song was a "last-minute" addition during recording sessions of “Songs From the Big Chair”. The decision to include the song in the album came after Orzabal played two chords on his acoustic guitar for Hughes. Along with “Shout”, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” is one of Tears for Fears' signature songs. “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” was the first #1 hit for Tears for Fears. “Shout” went to #1 two months later. Because “Shout” was the group’s first single everywhere but the USA, Tears for Fears thought it should also be their first release in the USA, but the label insisted “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” was better suited for their US Debut. The song has been covered extensively since its release, most notably by New Zealand singer Lorde for the soundtrack to the movie adaptation of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Link to OfficialVideo

"Jessie's Girl" is a song written and performed by Australian singer Rick Springfield. It was released on the album Working Class Dog in February 1981. "Jessie's Girl" was slow to become popular. It hit the Billboard chart in March but took 19 weeks to hit #1…at the time, one of the slowest climbs ever. It remained at #1 for two weeks and was Springfield’s only #1 hit. "Jessie's Girl" was at #1 when MTV launched on August 1st, 1981. The song also peaked at No. 1 in Springfield's native Australia and later won him a Grammy Award. Rick Springfield spent the 70s grinding away as both a singer and an actor. 1981 was his breakout year. In February, he released Working Class Dog, and a month later, he started appearing on the soap opera General Hospital in a regular role as Dr. Noah Drake. “Jessie’s Girl” started climbing the charts soon after, bolstered by his popularity on General Hospital. “Jessie’s Girl” was covered by The Chipmunks, using the same instrumental backing track. The character of Captain Macheath first appeared in John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera (1727). The original song Mack the Knife was composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht in a reinterpretation of that work for their 1928 play The Threepenny Opera. The song was introduced to American audiences in 1933 in the first English-language production of The Threepenny Opera. That production, however, was not successful and closed after a run of only ten days. The best-known English translation of Mack the Knife comes from Marc Blitzstein’s 1954 version of The Threepenny Opera, which played Off-Broadway for over six years. Blitzstein's translation provides the basis for most of the popular versions heard today. Bobby Darin decided to perform Mack the Knife when he saw a production of Threepenny Opera in Greenwich Village in 1958. Mack the Knife was Darin's biggest hit and spent nine weeks atop the Hot 100. The original German lyrics are far more graphic. Mack the Knife was a Top 40 hit for seven different artists. THE SONG:

Eleanor Rigby is a song by the Beatles, from their 1966 album Revolver. Credited to Lennon-McCartney, the song is one of only a few in which John Lennon and Paul McCartney later disputed primary authorship. According to Paul, he got the name “Eleanor” from the actress Eleanor Bron, who appeared in the 1965 Beatles film Help. “Rigby'' came to him when he was in Bristol, England, and spotted a store: Rigby and Evens Ltd Wine and Spirit Shippers. Paul liked the name “Eleanor Rigby” because it sounded natural and matched the rhythm he had in mind. Eleanor Rigby was released on August 5th, 1966 on both the album Revolver and as a double A-side with Yellow Submarine. The song topped the singles charts in Australia, Belgium, Canada, and New Zealand. Because of the string section, Eleanor Rigby was never played live by the Beatles. On his Back in the US tour, Paul McCartney played it without the strings, using keyboards to compensate. THE SONG: Mr. Big Stuff

Mr. Big Stuff is a song by American singer Jean Knight. Jean Knight recorded the song in 1970 in the original Malaco Records in Jackson, Mississippi. Joseph Broussard, Carrol Washington and Ralph Williams are the songwriters. Though it was a huge crossover hit, spending 5 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Soul Singles chart and reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, Mr. Big Stuff very nearly never saw the light of day. The song was recorded by New Orleans Producer Wardell Quezergue in the same 1970 session as Groove Me by King Floyd. Both tracks were presented to Stax Records, who originally passed on them. After Groove Me became a massive hit for tiny label Malaco, the employees of Stax Records remembered Knight’s recording of Mr. Big Stuff, reconsidered it and released it. Mr. Big Stuff has been sampled more than 50 times for other songs and heard in numerous films and commercials. In 1987, rapper Heavy D recorded "Mr. Big Stuff", which also became a hit. Though his version was entirely different from the original, Knight's hook line ("Mr. Big Stuff, who do you think you are?") was prominently featured throughout the song. Link to OfficialVideo

Dancing Queen is a song by the Swedish group ABBA, released in 1976 as the lead single from their fourth studio album, Arrival. The song was written by band members Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus, along with manager Stig Anderson. Dancing Queen was a worldwide #1 hit, topping the charts in more than a dozen countries including ABBA's native Sweden. According to ABBA's official site, it was conceived as a dance song with the working title "Boogaloo." Their manager Stig Anderson came up with the title "Dancing Queen," and after several months working on the track, ABBA came up with arguably the world's first europop disco hit. Many listeners interpret the lyric “Night is young and the music’s high” to mean that the music makes you feel high. In Sweden, it just means that the music is loud. According to the BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans, when the song was played at a Windsor Castle event, the Queen surprised guests by getting up for a twirl. Smooth Operator is a song by English band Sade from their debut studio album, Diamond Life (1984). Smooth Operator was co-written by Sade (Helen) Adu and her former bandmate from the band Pride, Ray St. John. The pair co-wrote the song in 1982 while still members of Pride, but did not get around to recording it. Smooth Operator was produced by Robert Miller. Sade member Stuart Matthewman said in a 2007 interview “See the thing about Robert Miller was that we recorded "Your Love is King," "Smooth Operator" and a couple of other tracks before we even had a record deal because he liked us, he thought we were good.” Stuart continued: “Miller produced and recorded the first tracks almost like a demo and then we took that to the record company.” Sade got signed and the record company made very few changes to the original demos. While Smooth Operator did not have a huge impact in the UK, it helped Sade gain exposure worldwide. The single was released in 1985 in the USA and landed at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Smooth Operator became one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s and Sade gained international prominence. THE SONG: GENIUS OF LOVE

“Genius of Love" is a 1981 hit song by Tom Tom Club. The song reached number one on the Billboard Disco Top 80 chart and was performed by Talking Heads (the group from which Tom Tom Club originated) in the 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense. The song was designated as Tom Tom Club's second single. Although the album had not been released in North America, over 100,000 copies of the single were sold as imports from Island Records UK, so Sire Records made a deal to release the single and the album in North America. The lyrics also pay tribute to many notable black musicians and singers, including George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Smokey Robinson, Bob Marley, Sly and Robbie, Kurtis Blow, Hamilton Bohannon, and James Brown. The Boys Are Back in Town is a song by the Irish band Thin Lizzy. Written by group leader Phil Lynott, the song was originally released in 1976 as the first single from Thin Lizzy’s album Jailbreak. It hit #1 in Ireland, #8 in the UK and was the band's breakthrough record in the USA. The Boys Are Back in Town is considered by Rolling Stone to be Thin Lizzy’s best song, placing it at No. 272 on the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list. Guitarist Scott Gorham told Classic Rock, “To us, this was a decent album track, no more. We certainly did not think it could be a single!” Gorham attributed the song's unexpected success to two DJs in Louisville, Kentucky who "played it incessantly until other stations in the surrounding area picked up on it. Had that song not kickstarted the sales of the album, the band was over." The song is played at most Irish Rugby matches and has appeared in numerous commercials, video games, TV shows, and films.

Galway Girl is a song by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. The song is a collaboration between Sheeran and Irish Folk band Beoga. Galway Girl incorporates parts of the tune "Minute 5" from Beoga’s 2011 album How to Tune a Fish. On Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2017, Sheeran released Galway Girl as the third single from his 2017 album. It topped the charts in Ireland, Iceland, Slovenia, and Slovakia; and reached number two in the UK, Australia, Belgium, Denmark and Poland. The music video for Galway Girl features actress Saoirse Ronan and Ed having a night out on the town in Galway. Sheeran had to fight his record company to include the song on the album. In an interview with The Guardian, he said: “They were really, really against Galway Girl, because apparently folk music isn’t cool.” Galway Girl has turned out to be one of Sheeran’s biggest crowd-pleasers, especially in Ireland. She was a featured contributor and writer on the nationally syndicated radio variety show Live From Here and the Onion News Network. Maneater is a song by American Duo Hall & Oates, featured on their 11th studio album, H2O (1982). Maneater reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 18th, 1982. It spent four weeks at #1 in America, making it the biggest single US Hit of the 80’s to feature a sax solo. It is one of several Hall & Oates songs that Daryl Hall’s long-time girlfriend Sara Allen is credited along with Hall & Oates. According to Hall, Allen convinced him to cut some additional words in the chorus which really made the song come together. "Maneater" was used on the soundtrack to the Julia Roberts and Richard Gere movie Runaway Bride. John Oates and viral saxophone sensation Saxsquach released a version of Maneater in 2021. THE SONG:

Raspberry Beret, was released on May 15th, 1985, and was written by American musician Prince. It was the lead single from Prince & the Revolution’s 1985 album Around the World in a Day. The song reached #2 on the Billboard chart, making it one of Prince’s highest-charting songs. The sound of the song expanded upon previous Prince arrangements, incorporating stringed instruments, Middle Eastern finger cymbals and a harmonica in the extended version. The video for the song was filmed on June 5, 1985 in Los Angeles. It was directed primarily by Prince, with animation created by Colossal Pictures co-founder Drew Takahashi. It combines footage of Prince & The Revolution performing the song surrounded by dancers and overlaid with various animations. According to 333Sound, Prince’s coughing fit at the beginning of the Raspberry Beret video was widely debated. As his jokes and euphemisms were well known, many jumped on the unusual cough, wondering what it could possibly mean. It was said that the coughing added a certain funkiness to the video and Prince later admitted, “I just did it to be sick, to do something no one else would do.” Link to OfficialVideo

THE SONG:

She's Always a Woman is a song by Billy Joel from his 1977 album, The Stranger. The single peaked at No. 17 in the U.S. in Oct. 1978, and at No. 53 in the UK in 1986, when it was released as a double A-side with Just The Way You Are. Joel wrote the song for his then-wife, Elizabeth Weber. Weber, a businesswoman, became his manager and was partially responsible for his ensuing financial success. However, she also had a reputation as a cold and ruthless woman—characteristics necessary in the music industry, which was dominated by men. Joel has said that he was influenced by Gordon Lightfoot and his mellow acoustic guitar ballads. He stated in an interview that he was attempting to replicate the fingerpicking common in folk music. He accomplishes this by playing arpeggiated triads with the right hand. Joel and Weber divorced in 1982 after nine years of marriage. Joel eventually nixed the song from his repertoire, but not because the memories were too painful. It was because he realized he no longer felt the passion for his ex-wife that he had felt when composing the song. He later said he realized it was time to stop when he found himself fantasizing about his dinner while performing She’s Always a Woman live. Link to OfficialVideo

According to Mellencamp, Jack & Diane was based on the 1962 Tennessee Williams film Sweet Bird of Youth. The music video featured Mellencamp and his then-wife, Victoria Granucci. Mellencamp spent a long time crafting this song in an effort to make it a hit. This was part of his plan to become so successful he could ignore critics and tell his record company to stick it. This song helped Mellencamp forge his identity. "The image that was given to me by the record company was so far off base of who I was and what I wanted to do," he said in his Plain Spoken DVD. "I had no idea what I wanted to do, but I knew what I didn't want to do. I did not want to be Johnny Cougar, I did not want to sing love songs." Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town with Douglas Sarine

Good. Bad. Asleep. Awake. Supernatural being, Santa Claus, gets “real” with Marypat about the true meaning of Christmas and what’s in it for him. From Jesus to reindeer and presents to presence, Marypat and St. Nick go deep into time and space to determine how naughty, nice or perhaps creepy the jolly entity is.

Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town is a Christmas song written in 1934 by J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie. It was first recorded by banjoist Harry Reser and his band. J.Fred Coots was a writer for Eddie Cantor’s radio show which was wildly popular at the time. Coots pushed for the host to perform Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town. Cantor wanted to pass on the song but was convinced by his wife, Ida, to give it a try. When Eddie Cantor sang and broadcast Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in November 1934 by, it became a hit; by Christmas, 500,000 copies of sheet music and more than 30,000 records were sold. Cantor had pre-recorded the records and printed the sheet music in anticipation of the song taking off. Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town has been recorded by over 200 artists including Bing Crosby, Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber. The first US Top 40 entry for Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town was the 1962 version by The Four Seasons. Featuring Frankie Valli, it hit #23. In 1970, Rankin-Bass produced Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town, an hour-long animated TV film based on the song, with Fred Astaire narrating the origin of Santa Claus. The most enduring version in the modern era is Bruce Springsteen’s. Bob Rivers did a parody of Springsteen’s version called Santa Claus is Foolin’ Around which is about how Santa Claus will steal your lady if you’re not careful. You Can Call Me Al is a song by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. It was the lead single from his seventh studio album, Graceland. According to Simon, the famously enigmatic chorus came from a funny memory of going to a party at the New York apartment of Pierre Boulez. Simon and his first wife Peggy arrived, meeting their host at the door, who evidently had no clue who they were. Boulez introduced them to his guests as “Al and Betty.” Simon also noted that the bass solo by Bakithi Kumalo, was not part of the original arrangement, but was suggested by Paul during the recording session when he learned that it was the bassist’s birthday. Bakithi improvised the fast fretless break, which was sonically doctored in New York; he used the first half of the phrase, then reversed it for the second half, creating a musical palindrome. In The Office episode "Heavy Competition," Jim and Pam listen to potential wedding songs, including Andy and his a cappella group's version of Pachelbel's Canon that segues into You Can Call Me Al. Stacy’s Mom by Fountains of Wayne was written by Adam Schlesinger (songwriter and bassist) and Chris Collingwood (vocalist). It is the third track on their third studio album, Welcome Interstate Managers, and was released on May 19, 2003 as the album's first single. The single was inspired by Schlesinger’s friend who had a crush on his grandmother growing up. “It’s sort of about that period when you’re first hitting puberty and suddenly everybody of the opposite sex is strangely attractive,” he told MTV. Stacy’s Mom is a blend of New Wave and power pop, influenced by The Cars and Ric Ocasek, as well as classics like Simon & Garfunkel’s Mrs. Robinson and Rick Springfield’s Jessie’s Girl. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Swift co-wrote the song with Max Martin and Shellback, both acclaimed Swedish producers and songwriters. It was released on August 13, 2012 for digital download and to US radio stations. WANEGBT is the lead single from Taylor’s album Red. Swift premiered the single during a Google live chat hours before its release. We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together was Taylor’s first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It debuted at #72 and rose to #1 the following week, registering one of the biggest single-week leaps in chart history. Swift explained to USA Today: "(It's) a definitive portrait of how I felt when I finally stopped caring what my ex thought of me. (He) made me feel like I wasn't as good or as relevant as these hipster bands he listened to...So I made a song that I knew would absolutely drive him crazy when he heard it on the radio. Sharp Dressed Man is a song by American rock band ZZ Top, released on their 1983 album Eliminator. Sharp Dressed Man was one of the first ZZ Top songs to use synthesizers. Mixed with guitarist Billy Gibbons’ distinctive sound, it gave them a new direction without alienating their old fans. After the second chorus, Billy Gibbons solos on guitar for over a minute before the third verse appears. He filled this section with lots of twists and turns to keep it interesting and layered two guitars to create a compound track. For one of those guitar lines, he played a Fender Esquire with a slide; the other he played on his 1959 Les Paul ("Pearly Gates") in standard tuning. The guitar solo in the song was chosen by Guitar World as number 43 in their 2009 list of the 50 Greatest Guitar Solos. According to Billy Gibbons, the concept for Sharp Dressed Man came from a movie (possibly the 1981 film “The Amateur”) where there is a character referred to as “Sharp-Eyed Man”. She’s also appeared on your TV: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, The Office, Bob’s Burgers, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Longmire, and more. Carrie took her first improv class a long, long time ago in Chicago in an attempt to meet cute guys. She did not get any dates but discovered a passion that influences her acting and writing. Carrie is half of the stand-up duo, Sky & Nancy Collins and half of the improv duo – Razowsky & Clifford. THE SONG: Gloria

Gloria was originally written and composed in Italian by Umberto Tozzi and Giancarlo Bigazzi. Tozzi first recorded Gloria, a love song, in 1979. When Laura Branigan started work on her first album,1982’s Branigan, she was teamed with producer Greg Mathieson, who did the keyboards and arrangements on Tozzi's Gloria. He suggested Branigan cover the song. Branigan recorded an English re-invention of "Gloria" as a character study of, in her words, "a girl that's running too fast for her own steps," the cover lyrics of which were written by Trevor Veitch. Branigan's version earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. The 1982 single of Gloria stayed on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for 36 weeks, then a record for a female artist. In 2019, The St. Louis Blues of the NHL started playing Branigan’s Gloria after home game wins and the crowds loved it. The St. Louis Blues went on to win the Stanley Cup that year. He has performed with the long-running improv team KingTen and the Armando show out of the IO and Second City. If you’d like to follow him, this podcast is about as close as you’ll get since he’s not on any social media.

THE SONG:

"Holding Out for a Hero" is a song co-written by Jim Steinman and Dean Pitchford (Screenwriter for Footloose) and recorded by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler for the soundtrack to the 1984 film Footloose. The song was later featured on her sixth studio album, Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire, and was a Top 40 hit in several European countries, as well as Canada and the United States. In Footloose, “Holding Out for a Hero” appears in a scene where Bacon is playing chicken on tractors with a local. He becomes a "hero" when he wins - not by force of will, but because his shoelace gets caught on a pedal and he can't jump off. Adam Lambert covered the song for his 2023 album High Drama. “She’s Crafty” by Beastie Boys was released in 1986 as part of their debut album “Licensed to Ill”. She’s Crafty achieved moderate success on the charts, peaking at number 44 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song samples Led Zeppelin’s The Ocean, from their 1973 album, Houses of the Holy. Licensed to Ill became the first rap LP to top the Billboard Album chart and was one of Columbia Records’ fastest-selling debut albums to date. The album received critical acclaim for its unique musical style, chemistry between the group members, and the Beasties stylized rapping. Since its release, Licensed to Ill has been ranked by critics as one of the greatest hip-hop and debut albums of all time. She’s Crafty was performed in just 13 concerts. Rhiannon was released on Fleetwood Mac’s second eponymous album in 1975 and then as a single in 1976. It quickly became a live showcase for Nicks and a cornerstone of the band’s image and mythology. It was a huge crossover hit for Underwood, dominating both the country and mainstream charts. At the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, Underwood won the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and the song's writers won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song. In the movie Pitch Perfect 2, Before He Cheats is performed during the Riff-off by The Baren Bellas. THE SONG:

Just What I Needed is a 1978 song by American rock band The Cars. Ric Ocasek, the frontman of the Cars, composed the song in 1977 and the track was released as a single from their self-titled debut album with bass player Benjamin Orr providing the lead vocals. The catchy distinctive guitar riff that opens “Just What I Needed” was borrowed from the song “Yummy Yummy Yummy” by the Ohio Express. Just What I Needed first appeared on Boston radio stations (WBCN and WCOZ) in 1977 strictly as a demo tape. DJ Maxanne Sartori, the on-air DJ, recounted that after Ocasek gave her the tapes of the song and another single, “My Best Friend’s Girl,” she began playing the demos during her weekday program slot. Before she knew it, calls with tons of positive comments came in for the songs, and they became one of the most requested songs on these Boston stations. "You're So Vain" is a song written and performed by American singer and songwriter Carly Simon and released in November 1972. In early 1973, the song reached No. 1 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. You’re So Vain was nominated for Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 16th Annual Grammy Awards in 1974. The title subject's identity has long been a matter of speculation, with Simon stating that the song refers to three men, only one of whom she has named publicly: Warren Beatty. Simon had said in 1983 that Beatty "certainly thought it was about him—he called me and said thanks for the song..."

A slew of people including Taylor Swift, Howard Stern and Dick Ebersol claim that Simon personally told them who the song was written about. They aren’t talking. That’s Mick Jagger you’re hearing on the backing vocals. The line "Then you flew your Learjet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun" refers to the total solar eclipse of July 10th, 1972, visible only in Nova Scotia, Alaska and the Canadian Arctic. Simon said the line "clouds in my coffee" came "from an airplane flight that I took with Billy Mernit, who was my friend and piano player at the time. As I got my coffee, there were clouds outside the window of the airplane and you could see the reflection in the cup of coffee. Billy said to me, 'Look at the clouds in your coffee'. Seamus McCarthy is a Chicago-style actor/writer/improviser who is often seen hanging around with similar people and occasionally seen performing with them at local Los Angeles theaters such as the Lyric Hyperion. He continues to be mistaken for being the brother of actress Jean Villepique, which has been going on since the late 1990s. Seamus is a lifelong friend of The Annoyance theater in Chicago.

THE SONG:

It’s A Shame About Ray is the title track of the Lemonheads 5th studio album, released in June of 1992. At the time of principal recording, the band consisted of Evan Dando (lead vocals, guitar), Juliana Hatfield (bass, backing vocals) and David Ryan (drums). The Lemonheads were formed in Boston in 1986 and Evan Dando has been the only constant band member out of more than 25 members in total. The tune was inspired by a quote that Evan Dando had seen in a Sydney Australia newspaper in reference to a kid called Ray who kept getting kicked out of every school he went to. 867-5309/Jenny is a 1981 song written by Alex Call and Jim Keller (Co-founder and lead guitarist of Tommy Tutone) and performed by Tommy Tutone. It peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1982. Despite Tommy Tutone’s lead singer, Tommy Heath and guitarist Jim Keller both saying at various times that Jenny was a real girl that they knew, co-writer Alex Call explained that the real origins of the song were all in his imagination…”I was just trying to write a 4 chord Rock song and it just kind of came out,” he told reporters, "There was no Jenny. The number? It came to me out of the ether." The song led to a fad of people dialing 867-5309 and made life very difficult for people who had that number. Mr. Jones is the debut single from the American band Counting Crows. The song was written by Adam Duritz and Counting Crows and was their first radio hit. It reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped the band gain a wide fanbase as well as a Grammy nomination. The song was inspired by Adam Duritz’s experiences while living in San Francisco. The lyrics reflect his feeling of alienation and a desire for fame and recognition (and girls) as a struggling musician. “Mr. Jones” refers to a real person, Marty Jones, who was a friend of Adam Duritz and a fellow musician. In live performances, Adam Duritz often changes the lyrics of the song, adding improvised verses or referencing current events. This has become a trademark of the band’s live shows. Written by Sting, the Every Breath You Take single was the biggest US and Canadian hit of 1983, topping the singles chart for eight weeks. It won the Grammy in 1983 for Best Song of the Year. In May 2019, it was recognized by BMI as being the most-played song in radio history. To escape the public eye in the wake of his controversial split from Frances Tomelty and the beginning of his relationship with Trudie Styler, Sting retreated to the Caribbean. He started writing Every Breath You Take at Ian Fleming’s writing desk on the Goldeneye estate in Oracabessa, Jamaica. Sting performed Every Breath You Take on a 2001 episode of Ally McBeal. In the show, he was sued by a couple who broke up after one of his sexually suggestive concerts. In the 2021 "The Sting" episode of Only Murders In The Building, Sting plays a nefarious version of himself that Selena Gomez' character suspects is a murderer. "'Every Breath You Take' is no love song," she puts forth as evidence. "It's about a jealous stalker and surveillance, and it actually seems like it was written by a killer." THE SONG: The Gambler

"The Gambler" was written by Don Schlitz, who was the first to record it. It was covered by several artists, but it was Kenny Rogers' adaptation that went on to top the country charts and win a 1978 Grammy for Best Country Song. The Gambler went on to become Rogers' signature song. Kenny Rogers made 'The Gambler' a huge hit song, but the late country star originally wanted his friend Willie Nelson to sing and release the song. The iconic tune was offered to Willie by Kenny, but was turned down. According to songwriter Schlitz, The Gambler is a loose adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1866 novella by the same name, which reflects on Dostoevsky's roulette compulsion. “The Gambler” inspired five highly-rated made-for-TV movies starring Rogers, the first airing in 1980 and the last in 1994. Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do) is a song performed and co-written by American singer-songwriter Christopher Cross, Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager and Peter Allen. When Bacharach got the gig scoring music for the movie Arthur, starring Dudley Moore, he worked on the music for the theme song with Christopher Cross, and asked Bayer Sager to compose the lyrics. She recalled the line Allen came up with years earlier, and secured his permission to use it. - How do you get “caught between the moon and New York City”? - According to Peter Allen, he came up with the line when his plane got stuck in a holding pattern waiting to land at JFK Airport in New York. The song won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 1981. It was the main theme song for the 1981 Dudley Moore film Authur. Dudley Moore, who starred in Arthur, was also an accomplished pianist, He and Cross became good friends and performed the song together a few times with Moore on piano and Cross singing. THE SONG: The Wind Cries Mary

The Wind Cries Mary is a rock ballad written by Jimi Hendrix. The Wind Cries Mary was released in the UK in May 1967. In the United States, the song was first released as the B-side of the "Purple Haze" single in June 1967. According to Jimi’s then-girlfriend Kathy Etchingham's account, he wrote the lyrics after an argument with her about her cooking lumpy mashed potatoes, using "Mary" (Etchingham's middle name). But, according to a previous girlfriend from Seattle, Mary Washington, the words "Somewhere a Queen is weeping/ Somewhere a King has no wife," were written in a love poem Hendrix had written for her. THE SONG:

Juke Box Hero was written by Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones and lead singer Lou Gramm.

Jones wrote the lyrics after he noticed a kid in Cincinnati waiting five hours in the rain to meet Foreigner. He ushered that kid backstage to watch the show. When Foreigner was filling arenas, Juke Box Hero was a showstopper that drove the crowd wild and midway through the song, a 20-foot juke box would inflate near the side of the stage. Windy was written by Ruthann Friedman and recorded by The Association in 1967. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July and ranked the #4 song of 1967. Friedman described the song, in interviews with Songfacts, as a song about the kind of guy she wanted to be with. Later on, she realized the song was actually about herself and how she wanted to be. She has appeared in numerous films & TV shows including The Office, Young Sheldon, Fresh off the Boat, Suburgatory, Days of Our Lives, Modern Family, and Mystic River. THE SONG:

This episode was inspired by the song Debra by Beck from his 1999 album Midnite Vultures. The song was inspired by both Prince’s song “Adore” and the David Bowie song “Win” - and contains samples of “My Love for You” by Ramsey Lewis. Debra was used in the 2017 Edgar Wright film Baby Driver and is credited as an inspiration for music in Flight of the Conchords. In addition to J.C. Penny the song mentions Zankou Chicken, a middle eastern restaurant in Glendale, CA, near where Beck spent his youth. There are over 12 Zankou Chickens in the Greater Los Angeles Area and all of them have delicious delicious garlic sauce that both Douglas and Zabeth love and that Sarah hates. Debra-Video

THE SONG:

Jan and Dean were William Jan Berry, and Dean Ormsby Torrence, who formed in Los Angeles in 1958. They helped to shape the California Sound and vocal surf music. "The Little Old Lady (from Pasadena)" was a folk archetype in Southern California in the mid-20th century used mostly for comedy and by used car salesmen as an indicator that a car had very little wear and tear. Early in 1964, there was an ad campaign from Dodge that had a little old, white-haired lady (played by Kathrn Minner) speeding down a street in a Dodge. Then she would stop and say, “Put a Dodge in your garage, Hone-ey!” You can hear it here.

THIS EPISODE was inspired by the song Werewolves of London by Marinell/Wachtel & Zevon), Warren Zevon’s biggest hit - and only top 40 hit as a singer. It was the first single from his 3rd solo album, Excitable Boy (1978). Legend has it that the song began as a joke by Phil Everly (The Everly Brothers). After seeing the film Werewolf in London (1935) on TV, Phil suggested to Zevon that he use the title and create a song and dance craze. Two years later, he did. THIS EPISODE was inspired by the song Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl), written by Looking Glass lead guitarist and co-vocalist Elliot Lurie. Following the song's release in 1972, "Brandy" increased in popularity as a girl's name in the United States. According to data from the Social Security Administration, Brandy was the 353rd most popular name in 1971, 140th in 1972, and, in 1973, 82nd. Coincidence? - Bandy (You’re A Fine Girl) video . The legend that Barry Manilow's song was originally titled "Brandy," and they changed it to “Mandy” is completely true. Scott English wrote the song as “Brandy” and recorded it in 1971. When Barry Manilow recorded it, Looking Glass already had a hit!

THIS EPISODE was inspired by the song Meet Virginia from Train’s 1998 debut album, Train. According to Train’s lead singer Patrick Monahan, “She’s real parts of real women that make up a woman that I’ve always wanted to meet.” And according to Songfacts: One of the girls who inspired this song was Train bass player Charlie Colin's girlfriend, Amber. According to Monahan, they were playing softball against the Counting Crows when Amber showed up from a formal event and played shortstop in a dress and high heels, thus the line, "Wears high heels when she exercises."
