Tony-nominated actress Shalita Grant publicly quit a popular television show after suffering from traction alopecia, thinning hair, and breakage in front of an audience of millions. A year and a half later, she created a patent-pending plant-based hair treatment that solved every one of her chronic and complex type 4 hair problems. In 2019, Shalita founded Four Naturals Hair in her dining room in Toluca Lake, California. It has since grown from its eponymous Hollywood hair spa into a nationwide salon and home care treatment system. After overcoming her own obstacles, Shalita created a standardized method to lift up other Black women still struggling with fragile, misunderstood hair.

Krish is a man on a mission. He believes that symbols of love should never come with questions of ethics. After studying Mechanical Engineering and taking up a job at a prestigious engineering company with long term ambitions to work his way up the ladder, he learned how hard it was to drill for oil, and how easy it was to drill for water. This realization remained in Himmatramka’s head, and knowing over two billion people lack access to clean water daily, he decided this was an issue he wanted to tackle and started researching how he could make his contribution to solving it.

He initially looked into how he could set up a charity but quickly realized there were many organizations already doing a great job and given there is a finite pool of capital all he would be doing is competing for donations. Instead the idea to set up some sort of social enterprise selling products where profits could go into helping to build wells made much more sense. The rest as they say is history and Do Amore was born.

On the last episode of the As Told by Nomads podcast of 2022, Tayo welcomes Hillary Walsh to the show. Together the pair talk about everything and anything immigration - from the systemic issues that pertain to immigration and what it’s like to be an immigrant in the US to how Walsh  endured her traumatic childhood and went on to build her business.  As a young child going through ‘juvie’ and the foster care system, Hillary never imagined that one day she would become an entrepreneur and lawyer representing refugees and asylum seekers in front of the Supreme Court.

First up, Grant shares how he got started in the speaking industry, from working as a youth pastor to doing up to seventy paid speaking gigs a year and launching The Speaker Lab. He also discusses one of the most common questions he gets asked—how much to charge as a speaker—and the Speaking Fee Calculator, a free resource he created to help people determine their rates. Grant then tackles the widespread fear of public speaking, suggesting that nerves aren’t always a bad thing and can be harnessed to make sure you’re really present in important moments. He also says that a big part of managing nerves when speaking is making sure that you prepare well in advance, just like an athlete before a big event, so that you have confidence in your ability to execute and combat your nerves. The conversation then pivots to a discussion about the importance of family in Grant’s life, including how he maintains a balance between work and family and how he thinks the best way to be a good dad is to be a good husband and make sure his kids know how much he loves their mom. Finally, Grant shares how he uses his difference to make a difference by being intentional in his life and ensuring he embraces the things he loves.

We begin the episode by discussing how David, a city kid from New York, decided to tour the world and explore food cultures. During his childhood, David used to get glimpses of where his food came from, on fishing trips with his grandfather or apple picking upstate, but he had lost that connection as an adult. So he decided he wanted to figure out if a city person could get back to an understanding of food by learning to do things like harvesting wheat or making tequila, an idea that ultimately developed into From Scratch. Next, David talks through some of the lessons he’s learned while making the show and experiencing different food cultures, from developing respect for vegans to discovering that having regular family meals may help you live longer. He also speaks to the loss of respect for food producers and the impact of food production on the environment, emphasizing that if changes aren’t made, the results may be catastrophic. David then discusses the process of finding his voice as a host, admitting his first couple of episodes were tough, until he realized his job was to act as an audience surrogate by asking questions and drawing out the experts’ experience and insight. He says that most of us become what other people tell us we should be and get stuck in outdated coping mechanisms, and only by understanding ourselves can we make progress. He illustrates this by sharing his own journey away from the assumption that his physical prowess was the only thing he had to give to finding his spark and purpose in academia. I then ask Dr. Yeager to speak about another concept from his book—chasing your wildest dreams. He clarifies that the important part is not stopping once you’ve achieved one dream but continually planning to pursue the next one so as to avoid stagnation. In order to figure out those dreams, Dr. Yeager advises focusing on finding your genius, combating negative and bad-faith self-talk, letting go of outdated support systems, and being your own number one. And finally, Dr. Yeager shares how he uses his difference to make a difference by pointing out to others that while they will face obstacles, it is possible to pursue and do whatever you choose.

People like Martin are starting to realize that remote work and asynchronicity improves openness and reflects the world’s ever changing value systems.  Ideas reign supreme now that your race, sex, and gender no longer play a role in whether your hired or not.  We need to stop judging others based on their exterior, and remote work is one of the wonderful ways that we can make that happen. That’s not to say that remote work doesn't have its downsides.  In adults over the age of 25, most socialization takes place in office.  And now that there is no office, it becomes increasingly more difficult to meet people.  That being said, Liam found that remote work has introduced this notion of choice in the workforce.  It’s no secret that many adults abandon their childhood aspirations for a career path that’s a little more realistic.  Now that we get to decide our environments, however, it's up to us to intentionally create spaces that maximize the fullness of self.

Ryan argues that the key to solving the generational wealth gap is a conglomeration of kind, intelligent individuals who are willing to create and engage with institutions that have Black excellence at heart. That’s why, he says, that he likes to surround himself with individuals smarter than him; after all, that’s arguably the only way to improve.  He goes on to discuss the inherent value in learning from others.  In fact, he owes a lot of Greenwood’s success and the platform’s extensive waitlist to the hard work of others.  He closes out this episode by reminding the audience that in following his dreams and giving back to his community, there were just as many downs as ups– if not more.  So try not to get discouraged when things don’t go according to plan - even the greats suffer from minor and major hiccups sometimes.

He goes on to discuss public speaking tips that are rather applicable to all walks of life.  When people lose their stage presence, for example, it’s because they might not believe themselves to be enough.  Perhaps they spoke rather quietly and monotonously for fear of being judged otherwise, but Ronny argues that believing we are worthy is the first step toward public speaking confidence and confidence in general.  He and his wife record themselves daily reading aloud to practice variation of voice and increase their confidence. Ronny draws this episode to a rather fitting conclusion to discuss three important principles: focus, purpose, and action.  When we hone and zero in on these three notions, Ronny believes that everything will fall into place - and quite frankly, for him, it has.

Shiv’s passion for representation transcends photography, though.  She’s taken to social media to engage with others about diversity in pop culture, and has become rather popular herself in doing so.  She goes on to discuss the difference between visual representation and cultural representation in media and why we should always try to achieve the latter.  In the media, minority stereotypes and relevant discriminatory undertones are unfortunately still prevalent, so she hopes that her social media creates a safe space for individuals to have discussions, feel seen, and be heard.  Online, she often talks about pop culture phenomena and the unique experience of feeling ashamed of your own culture for fear of judgment from those around you.  Shiv and Tayo draw this episode to a close by discussing Shiv’s media future, in which she’s ‘taking it one day at a time’.

In spite of fighting a rather uphill battle, Khary is incredibly passionate about helping children take back their own narratives.  It’s time to start debunking the common misconceptions that black people only have futures in music or athletics, that they’re violent, that they’re drug addicts, etc.  After all, the perpetuation of these notions obscure black and LatinX histories, generational trauma, futures, and the link between poverty and violence.  Khary goes on to talk about the American obsession with crime, and how the sheer volume of crime series on TV and racist news propaganda criminalizes the young black man in the American psyche.  Through Khary’s organization, Brotherhood Sister Sol, he hopes to help black and LatinX transcend the boundaries that have been created for them.

They argue that comedy videos develop a large sense of community and draw from personal experiences. Each time they make another video, the pair must take into account their audience, their platform, new angles on familiar ideas, and, of course, a sense of humor. Given that the women post a majority of their videos online, they’re forced to contend with the ever present cancel culture. They note that while they do make mistakes, they also try to learn from them each and every day. After all, working in an industry that relies on social media platforms that evolve in the blink of an eye, you have to continue learning just to keep up with changing trends and features. Above all else though, Shelby and Kristina find that so long as they make a positive impact on their audience, all is right in their world.

We start our conversation with Cynthia’s early experiences as a first-generation Asian-American growing up in a predominately African-American neighborhood. The combination of a household that was governed by very traditional Chinese values and a strong black community led to Cynthia never feeling like she really fit in anywhere until she reached high school and met other American-born Chinese students. We then move into a discussion of the generational shifts that Cynthia has observed in the diversity and inclusion space, with events such as the murder of George Floyd and the continuing anti-Asian violence impacting the new generation of workers’ expectations of their companies in terms of inclusivity. Finally, I ask Cynthia my mission statement question: how does she use her difference to make a difference? And she responds that she does it by showing up as her authentic self, encouraging companies to drive more diversity, equity, and inclusion, and helping employees have a voice in making those changes.
