James takes us on a West Texas road trip haunted by a series of eerie coincidences that felt like driving straight into a horror movie. Then, Jeff Smith details a brutal run through Northern Europe during a record-breaking cold spring, involving glitchy gear, a confusing loop around Antwerp, and a mad dash through an airport just to get back to the Texas heat.

2026 marks key anniversaries in British travel history, from Gulliver’s Travels to Butlin’s first holiday camp. This lecture traces the often-hidden presence of LGBTQ+ lives in the British holiday, revealing how liberation, desire, and surveillance shape three centuries of leisure. Through the Grand Tour, Music Hall coastal culture, Butlin’s camps, and Club 18–30, we explore travel as both method and metaphor—a queer pilgrimage into the liminal spaces of pleasure.

Matthew Roberts is a writer in his fourth year of a part-time PhD in Text, Practice as Research at the University of Kent, examining Queering the British Holiday. His critically acclaimed plays have appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and been featured in The Guardian, The South Bank Show, BBC 5 Live and LBC. After a decade in the tourist industry, he taught English in China, Liverpool, Manchester and London, and has presented research at major national and international conferences. He also volunteers at Queer Britain: The National LGBTQ+ Museum.

Episode 11

In this week's episode of Atypical Daydream, host Josh Caldwell sits down with artist, writer, and old friend Scout McComb.

Scout takes us deep into Guatemala, first into a Highland Mayan village where he found himself running with a mob toward something he couldn't have anticipated, and then into the depths of the Petén jungle on a multi-day trek to one of the most remote and significant sites in the ancient Mayan world. Along the way, Scout encounters things that most people never see and sits down to a dinner that raises some very uncomfortable questions about what exactly is on the menu.

In this week's episode of Atypical Daydream, host Josh Caldwell sits down with songwriter and filmmaker Johnny O'Donnell, calling in from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In the summer of 2003, Johnny and two best friends set out on a loop of the country with no real plan, a shared copy of Jack Kerouac, and a burning desire to meet girls — which did not go well. What followed was a journey full of strange coincidences, dark omens, a 70-year-old hitchhiker with tears in his eyes, and a train ride home through the desert that Johnny describes as the unexpected highlight of the whole trip. Johnny's story beautifully balances the seemingly unrelated with the deeply meaningful, and by the end you'll understand exactly why.

Then Chris Jordan, one of the most well-traveled figures in the specialty coffee world, takes us to the remote farms of Ethiopia and Yemen where the coffee is extraordinary and the journey to get there is anything but easy.

The second is a rock and roll rumor that Ian insists is more than a rumor, involving the Dave Matthews Band, 800 pounds of waste dumped into the Chicago River, and a credible insider tip about who was actually on that bus.

Keith Waggoner, a musician and surfboard maker, shares a story straight out of a disaster movie. When his 1977 Dodge Tradesman van breaks down in rural California, he and his band find themselves stranded for days in a warehouse that may or may not have been a meth lab, playing for free beer in a local bar where they definitely didn't fit in.

Then, Adeline Dante (Addy) of Adeline and the Philistines recounts her very first tour, which just happened to be with the legendary Daniel Johnston. Addy shares a magical and "totally innocent" encounter with the late icon after a show at a San Diego burrito joint that perfectly captures Johnston's unique spirit.
