First Peek: The Bandcamp Essay & Anniversary Mix

This Bandcamp thing of mine has become quite a monstrosity over the past three months, but it's felt good to take the time to present it in a satisfactory way. It's ginormous, but I hope you'll find it worthwhile. Once you get a taste of its subject matter, I think you'll at least agree that it quite appropriate for the bottom of the new Music vertical (and in turn, our upcoming relaunch) in its comprehensive examination of the business of the past 10 years of music streaming and the constant struggle on behalf of the Legacy industry's beneficiaries to appropriate technologies like streaming services to maintain the ultra-profitable chokehold they've had on successful American music since the first time it was recorded.

Subscribers (that's you!) will receive exclusive access to the full document of the attached preview as soon as I'm done, including endnotes! (They're actually pretty entertaining in this case.) Please do espouse your obsession with my awesome documents as publicly as possible.

More importantly, it will be accompanied by our sublime first monthly freelance album review by Adam Bexten, who offers some sincerely profound insight into the magic of Robyn's Body Talk.

Extratone Radio Returns

As I mentioned briefly in this month's Editor's Letter, Extratone Radio is back, now on a whole 7 platforms! I'll be publishing regularly, if not quite as often as I'd like for the next few weeks.

Today's episode is an exploration of the Gran Turismo 4 soundtrack and the original file is attached, should subscribers like to download it.

The main Studio Eat feed (/audio) has become redundant, so we’ve removed it from iTunes and Google Play Music. It will remain accessible here, but our new Extratone Radio page is a more appropriate avenue to our sounds.

Notice that the new Radio page is more minimally and explicitly designed for quick access and legibility. As much as I wanted to avoid sacrifice to such Web 2.0 priorities, I think they better serve this use than the old page's design at least.

It's been just about three months exactly since I last spoke to you, and we accomplished a lot over the Summer.

We were featured on Anchor, though our station has been dormant for a good while.
I began The Junction - an editor's companion to our weekly newsletter, and have intermittently added to it.
Isiah's three pieces have been excellent - I hope to speak with him in detail for an episode of Futureland, soon.
In June, I built a bespoke Masthead, finally.
Eryn and I also recorded an introductory episode for Runnin' Down a Dream, a podcast about revisiting our rural origins in a particular way.
Last month, Tim published our first fashion content and The Movie Closet celebrated its one-year birthday.
I also published The Email Chic, arguing for the coolness (and handiness) of weekly newsletters.

Introducing: A New Podcast About Rural Adventures

Hawthorn's awfully indie, but that's nothing but welcome variety, personally. Plenty of Tone-involved folks would make for much better curators/DJs, but they all seem to be a bit mystified by the app, itself.

Archived: Our First Full Day Featured on Anchor

We're closing in on one week, featured on Anchor.

I pledged to polish things up a bit, so I began the week with 40 minutes worth of Southern rap (since I know very little about anything else,) which was better received (by all but Hawthorn) than I expected.

The first track ended up with 35+ registered listens (the app's stat & analytics tools appear to be fairly low-priority at the moment, which is more than fine with me.)

Also, the app was apparently mentioned by Apple at WWDC, which is no small deal, and all the more reason for us to remain as polished as possible, considering that we are easily accessible/visible from the Anchor homepage , this very moment.
