We still have kids detained in cages and tent cities here in America. Refugee children are representing themselves in U.S. immigration courts. The government has no idea what parent goes with what child and are doing DNA tests now to fulfill a court-order of re-uniting parents with children (because we needed a lawsuit to ensure they’d do it in a timely manner *slow blink*). Yes, I’m still talking about the refugee crisis and detained kids, I won’t stop until we change course and treat people with the basic human decency that their humanity deserves. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shocked the establishment in a NY primary where she beat incumbent Representative Joe Crowley landing herself a place as the Democratic candidate for his U.S. House seat. Gone, girl! Make sure y’all vote and check to make sure you’re registered because they can purge voter rolls… Oh and Essence Fest is happening!

She recently announced a new $36M fund her team has launched that will be used to solely invest in black women startups and entrepreneurs. She’s truly a woman who is pulling in others who are ready to take their seat at the table. It’s time to talk about the history of othering in America and how we’re seeing it play it now at the souther border. Getting to the root of the racist policies of America throughout history and that chose to ignore the basic humanity of different groups of people on this episode. A lot has been happening with family separation, childhood detention, now family detention, and deportation of parents without children. A lot of horrible things happening and it’s time to get honest about the discussion.

Self education is core to self-care. It’s time to take ownership of your own education and learning about what’s happening here in America, getting your news from reputable sources, learning American history, and World history. An educated electorate is a powerful electorate. An educated person is a powerful person. We are taught the basics of our own history and are given the snapshots of current events in our media, so it’s important that we go deeper and learn more on our own. Educating oneself is an important part of self-care because we can be more thoughtful in our own ideals and actions.

Segment 3: Black Excellence

Black Excellence is human excellence in this episode! I’m spotlighting the nameless people who are doing the work at the southern border, sounding the alarm, amplifying the message on social media and in main stream media, and donating their time and money for the basic humanity of people seeking help from America who are being treated as lesser than by our administration. Seeing the many people fighting around the clock reminds us that human excellence is all around us, because it is within each of us.

I’ve been on break for a month! So, this is my recap on what happened the past month from This is America to the Trump Administration showing us just what the America they want looks like with immigration. Horrible all around, so I’m sharing my thoughts.

Segment 2: Self-Care

We have been inundated by suicides this last week. It’s time to talk about truly being mindful of self and others and ensuring we are there for them and reaching out when we’re not ourselves. LIfe is a precious gift that gets really hard at times, know that we still deserve to live it to the fullest. If you’re experiencing thoughts of suicide, please reach out to someone you love and trust or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. Find a good therapist and check out a great podcast, Therapy for Black Girls, wherever you get your podcasts. There are always such wonderful topics that could be beneficial. Check on those strong friends, quiet friends, friends you know have been going through. Be there for them if it isn’t you that is feeling the pressure. Let’s spread love and be the light.

It’s Pride Month and as an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community, I wanted to make sure I took time to highlight some gamechangers out there. With all of the recent murders that have been happening against transgendered women, I would be remiss not to first choose one of the most vocal transgender activist to discuss on the show, Janet Mock. She’s a gamechanger for sure!

Segment 1: What’s Happening Now

There has been way too much happening in the past couple of weeks. Way too much! But, here we are. So, I’m taking the opportunity to hit on some of the highlights that really shed a light on how existing while black is criminalized and attacked. I’m talking about the incident at Starbucks that resulted in the arrest of 2 black men, the murder of 4 black people at a Waffle House by a white supremacist, the arrest of a young woman at a Waffle House in Alabama, and the recent comments by Kanye on Twitter. So much to unpack. Too much to unpack.

Because life these past couple of weeks have been insane (and I didn’t even tough on everything that went down!), I’m calling for a social media detox for all of us. We gotta sage our phones and tablets, ya’ll. I’m giving you 4 tips (and a bonus) on taking a vacation from social media and reconnecting with your life. Trust me, it’s one of the highest forms of self-care and you deserve it.

With the opening of the memorial on America lynchings in Alabama this week, I want to spotlight an incredible woman who did the work when it wasn’t popular and documented lynchings across America. Yep, I’m talking about Ida B Wells-Barnett. Quick history lesson and moment to honor a true icon.
