Episode 171: Deschutes Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager

We're back after a short break, and David drinks the Costco-exclusive Deschutes Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager.

Kirkland Signature Helles-Style Lager is a recipe from the Oregon-based Deschutes Brewery that won a gold medal at the 2023 Great American Beer Festival. The beer is 4.5% ABV and is a nearly perfect example of the German-inspired style that is both crisp and clean.

The Brewers Association annual ranking of the top 50 craft breweries is also out, and we talk about the biggest movers on the list. One of the headlines for David is that Rhinegeist Brewery is now the biggest brewery in Ohio, moving up to 16th overall and passing longtime champ Great Lakes. BrewDog and Fat Head's also rank as Ohio breweries in the top 50.

BERO Hazy IPA, known as Edge Hill, is from the non-alcoholic beer brand started by Tom Holland. The Edge Hill Hazy IPA is full of flavor with a playful tropical finish - it’s like a smooth New England, hoppy getaway in every sip. BERO also released Kingston Golden Pils and Noon Wheat.

Urban Artifact Astronaut Food Peach is an ale brewed with freeze-dried fruit. The beer clocks in at 15% ABV and is known as the "world's most expensive beer", as it clocks in at around $38 for a four pack.

Dunkes Bier is a German Style Pilsner made from the authentic, 188-years old, Schönberger family recipe from Millstadt’s Sister City, Gross-Bieberau, Germany founded in 787.

In their ancient Odenwälder dialect, “Dunkes” is a friendly word for a person from Gross-Bieberau. Schönberger bierbraurie was founded in 1835 but closed it many years ago.

We named this beer in honor of that deep tradition as Millstadt was founded in 1836 about the time ancestors of many current Millstadt residents immigrated here from Gross-Bieberau.

We brew Dunkes Bier to preserve the cultural bier heritage of Gross-Bieberau and honor our own ancestry.

The blended whiskey has complex aromas of vanilla, aged fruit and buttery shortbread rounded off by caramel and a touch of oak. The palate has just a touch of sweetness, followed by spice, toasted nut and oak flavors, with a robust finish.

Beers and Beards Episode 153: Fretboard/Brink Electric Llama

We're back this week with a new episode, and David drinks a beer that is a collaboration between two of his favorite breweries, as Brink and Fretboard came together to produce Electric Llama.

Brink and Fretboard Electric Llama is a Bavarian Style IPA. This Bavarian IPA is moderate strength India Pale Ale made uniquely Bavarian by the use of new varietal German hops. Late additions of Tettnang and Calista hops give this ale notes of intense fruit and berries.

Gary also tells us a great story about how he got a private tour of the location of JFK's assassination when he was in Dallas.

Beers and Beards Episode 152: Belleflower Finch and Thistle

We're back after a short hiatus and David celebrates by drinking Belleflower Finch and Thistle.

David fell in love with Belleflower Brewing when he visited Portland, Maine, and was excited to see that they now distribute to Ohio. Belleflower Finch and Thistle is a dry hopped New England IPA, pouring pale golden hazy with aromas of big papaya, kiwi, pineapple, and stone fruit that will make you long for summer. The strong pale ale opens with flavors of grapefruit and other tropical citrus and stone fruit for a crispy taste that finishes with some light malt sweetness.

Gary has some Jim Beam Black Extra Aged. That extra char, extra aging is just up his alley and was a hit.

There were Pappy pours at cost on Black Friday, the downfall of some craft breweries and of course some football talk.

Beers and Beards Episode 130: Perennial Intentionally Indulgent and Evan Williams Single Barrel

We're back on our normal game this week as David drinks Perennial Intentionally Indulgent and Gary revisits an old favorite in Evan Williams Single Barrel.

The 2022 version of Intentionally Indulgent from St. Louis' Perennial Artisan Ales is an Imperial Stout with tiramisu inspired ingredients including vanilla, Sump coffee, and decadent chocolate sauce and brewed in collaboration with 2nd Shift Brewery.

Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage from Heaven Hill Distillery is 7-8 years old and comes in at 86 proof.

We also discuss the new list of the top 50 craft breweries by volume that was released by the Brewers Association, and this year featured a few surprises. The top five were all the same from last year, but fast-growing non-alcoholic craft brewery Athletic Brewing jumped 14 spots from 27th to 13th. Bell's is no longer ranked after being purchased last year by Lion/Kirin, and Cincinnati's Rhinegiest moved up five spots from 28th to 23rd. Craft beer gained share of the overall beer market from 13.1 to 13.2% but the overall beer market shrank by 3%. There were also 549 new brewery openings and 319 closings.

There's also news this week that the bourbon industry could be worth $12.8 billion by 2031, up from $7.8 billion in 2021.

And in a story that we discussed just to say the name of the bourbon is that Furman University released their own private label bourbon called FU All The Time.

David talks about baseball starting a few weeks ago, and how Cincinnati has an abundance of baseball-themed beers. One such beer is Rhinegiest Hustle, an 6% IPA with notes of citrus, peach, tangerine, and mango.

In keeping with the baseball talk, we chat about how MLB teams are extending beer sales longer due to the new pitch clock shortening games.

We also talk about a famous Kentucky priest releasing an extremely rare barrel pick from Willett, and how two bottles are already reserved for the pope and Shaq. We also try to decide if we can think of two more famous people than those two.

We also debut the new hit game show “bourbon or baby food” where David reads a description and Gary tries to decide if it describes bourbon (or whiskey) or baby food.

This week we have a doozy of a show for you as Gary drinks Woodford Reserve Wheat Whiskey while David has Christian Moerlein Lager.

Woodford Reserve Wheat Whiskey has wheat as the dominant grain, making up 52% of the mash bill. It also has malt, corn, and rye, and boasts fruit and floral flavors. It comes in at 90 proof and has a spicy palate with a dry finish.

Christian Moerlein Lager is a traditional lager brewed with malted barley, noble hops and pure water true to the German reinheitsgebot. David tells about the new owners of the Moerlein brand and how they are reviving not only that brand, but also Little Kings and Hudepohl and also renovating three historic breweries in Cincinnati.

Beers and Beards Episode 127: Blue Run Reflection 1 and Side Project Yuzu

We're back this week as Gary gets back into drinking with Blue Run Reflection 1 from Castle & Key while David cracks open Yuzu Blend #1 from Side Project.

Blue Run Reflection 1 Straight Bourbon comes in at 95 proof and is aged at least 4 years. It also is on the higher end of bourbon, retailing around $100 per bottle. It was released in April 2022, and is meant to be a gentle and sipping bourbon, and Gary definitely found it to be very gentle.

Missouri recently took home the crown in the Brewery Travels Beer State Madness bracket, so David celebrated by drinking a beer he picked up on a trip to St. Louis a couple of years ago. Yuzu Blend #1 from Side Project is lighter at 5% and has a strong citrus nose and taste. There's also a tiny bit of funk that you get on the back end.

We are back this week as David dives into a bourbon-barrel aged beer in Lagunitas Willettized while Gary takes a break from drinking, but tells us about having plenty of bourbon on his trip to Nashville over the weekend.

Lagunitas Willettized is a barrel-aged imperial coffee stout that clocks in at over 13% ABV. After Willett Distillery uses their barrels for bourbon and rye, Lagunitas puts their beer in them and what comes out has strong notes of bourbon, coffee, and chocolate.

Gary discusses his weekend trip to Nashville where he got to try Weller's Craft Your Perfect Bourbon, and other debaucherous things.

In news this week, we chat about whether Anheuser Busch is losing faith in their craft beer portfolio, as well as consumers being confused about whether there is beer in their Bud Light Seltzer.

This week Gary drinks a bourbon from Uncle Mike's private stash, and let's just say that the 131 proof Stagg Jr. Batch 18 almost breaks him. David also drinks a higher ABV beer as he cracks open Land-Grant's We Should Start a Podcast.

Stagg Jr. might be the son of George T. Stagg bourbon, but it packs a punch. It's unfiltered and uncut, and it ages for nearly a decade. And it's not for the faint of heart. Some say that the bold character is reminiscent of Mr. Stagg himself.

Land-Grant Brewing in Columbus always puts out some unique beers, and this week David tries their We Should Start A Podcast Double IPA. Na Zdravi is a Czech dark lager that is rich on the palate, and is full-bodied and roasty.

Beers and Beards Episode 122: TX Blended Whiskey and Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic

Dry January is coming to a close, but David has one more NA beer to drink, and he goes with Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic. Gary tries something other than bourbon this week, as a listener was kind enough to provide him with some TX Blended Whiskey after he blind tasted TX Bourbon on Episode 118.

Deschutes Black Butte Non-Alcoholic is one of the highest rated NA beers on Untappd, and David said that you know it's good if Deschutes is putting the name and reputation of their highest-selling beer on the label. It's a dark pour and holds up well to the original, which David tried on the show during Flagship February last year.

TX Blended Whiskey has notes of vanilla, pear, and is slightly sweet on the nose. The palate is honey butter, banana, and caramel, and the finish is long and smooth with no burn. It won best American craft whiskey at the San Francisco World Sprits Competition in 2013.

We also chat about this being a big weekend in the NFL with both of our teams having a shot to square off in the Super Bowl. Speaking of the Super Bowl, Anheuser-Busch is switching up its advertising plan this year, with commercials coming for Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, and Busch Light. Spirits will also be featured for the first time with Crown Royal and Remy Martin cognac.

Craft breweries in Cincinnati are getting in on Ohio sports betting, as both Rhinegeist and Taft's have recently added sportsbook partners. Fireball is getting sued for selling mini bottles that don't contain whiskey.

In legal news, a bunch of bourbon was seized from Justin's House of Bourbon in Kentucky by the ABC.

Is craft beer going through a mid-life crisis? It seems that way as major brands like New Belgium's Fat Tire, Rogue's Dead Guy, and Bell's Two Hearted all recently received updates or line extensions.

It's Super Bowl ad time, and this year Molson Coors is pitting its two biggest brands against one another as Miller Lite and Coors Light are vying for limelight in a new ad campaign.

Craft beer continues to grow in the Cincinnati region, and the newest trend is breweries opening second or even third locations. The latest to announce an additional space was Sonder Brewing, which will open the Sonder Taphaus & Kitchen in West Chester later this year. That marks at least seven area existing breweries that have plans to open new locations this year.

In the continued blurring of lines between alcoholic beverage products and established brands, Bojangles is teaming up with Appalachian Mountain Brewery to launch a hard sweet tea this year.

This week we discuss a failed promo that copied from the great Willy Wonka (or Michael Scott depending on how old you are). David has successfully made it through half of dry January and has only drank his mouthwash twice.

A fun light non-alcoholic beer was on tap this week as David went with Untitled Art's Non-Alcoholic Watermelon Gose. It was that hit of refreshment without the alcohol that kept him on pace to finish the month strong.

Gary says he really likes the nose and the long Kentucky hug offered up by Northside Distilling's Single Barrel Bust a Crust special edition bourbon. David talks about his trip to Phoenix Brewing and how he enjoyed the former funeral home and mortuary and he brought back a few beers, including an imperial rye IPA called The Undertaker that he really enjoyed.

In this week's news, we talk about Rich Fiero, co-owner of Atrevida Brewing in Colorado Springs, who took down a mass shooter at a nightclub over the weekend. Rich is a true hero and we raise a glass to him.

This is the 109 limited edition podcast. Well that seems to be the thing that's hot right now. This week was a fun back and forth as always with some good spirits as we head into football season and some tailgating hopes.

David went to the lake. He didn't fish but he did go to Sixth Sense Brewing for some Sportsball which was on theme with the conversation tonight. He also brought up Dogfish Head's new beer and cheese pairings which didn't sound too bad at all.

Gary went to the shelf for another pour of Old Fitzgerald Bottled In Bond 8 year old. His days of drinking are numbered so this was a good memory with a good bourbon. It is also probably one of the coolest bottles out there.

Hey, welcome back. We have to get back to the basics so no funny business with seltzers this week although we reserve the right to become a seltzercast.

That time has come again as we announce the Goose Island Bourbon Stouts of the year. This is our third time doing this and the selection returns with a coffee offering, the first since 2017. Some good stuff in this lineup that drops on Black Friday.

A government official in trouble? Yes a Virginia ABC official has been busted for profiting off insider information with the state's rare bourbon allocations. He betrayed the beloved bourbon community for profit. Seems about right.

David in his attempt to avoid real sports completed a Triathalon and didn't finish last. He was close but the main thing is he paid his money and finished with a medal, that he paid for. His efforts earned him a little treat of Fibonacci Brewing Company this week and their The Noid. Job well done David.

Gary had to detox from all the seltzer so it was back to bourbon. He may or may not have caved to peer pressure that Uncle Mike put on him by calling him names. This week the combat sports inspired Puncher's Chance was a surprisingly nice change up from the bubbly frat boy drinks of weeks past.

We're back after a week off where David took vacation and Gary was on a work trip. This week's bourbon is Basil Hayden Toast and the beer is Rhinegiest Nines Are Wild.

In this episode, we start out talking about 4th of July and Gary of course has a funny fireworks story. We discuss the new Jack and Coke ready-to-drink cocktail, and Gary tells us about his new favorite energy drink.

Gary's trip to Memphis involved lots of bourbon and a gentleman getting very excited for the opportunity to buy lots of people rounds of Blanton's. Gary tells us about seeing the famous ducks at the Peabody Hotel, and how he nailed his presentation.

David went to Grand Rapids and Lake Michigan. In Grand Rapids he visited the New Holland Knickerbocker location, where he purchased some barrel-aged Dragon's Share Seltzer.

The big news item of the week is that Stone Brewing sold out to Sapporo, ending 25-plus years as an independent craft brewery. We discuss the sale and our podcast's fun history with Stone.

Gary drinks Basil Hayden Toast, and let's just say that he's a fan. Basil Hayden Toast features an entirely new brown rice mashbill and a secondary finish in toasted barrels. The result is a bourbon with less spice, and deepened notes of sweet caramel with a bright, light mouthfeel.

David drinks Nines Are Wild, a cold double IPA brewed to celebrate Rhinegeist's ninth anniversary.
