Why the most difficult time in your life can be your greatest strength

I heard this thing once. People who are at the top of their field are most likely also healthy, keep in shape, exercise and eat the right stuff.

Whilst of course there are exceptions to this rule, I can personally testify to the power of changing unhealthy habits, exercising regularly and leading a healthy lifestyle. My own life took a positive turn as soon as I started to lose weight, watch what I eat and started going to the gym. I feel so much better mentally as a direct result of the healthy habits I have now developed.

It's therefore I'm so excited to have a true leader in the health and wellbeing space. An accomplished Personal Trainer, entrepreneur and soon to be all across your TV screens as he sets to embark on an acting career, Alex Crockford is by far, one of the most humble, kindest and thoughtful people I've ever met.

What really inspired me during this interview though, was how he overcame one of the most challenging parts of his life - being sacked from his job with nothing to fall back on.

He describes in this interview how this was actually the life changing event that set him off to realising his own true potential, and as we were talking, I couldn't help but realize just how similar our experiences are.

Despite this setback, Alex's achievements to date are just phenomenal. Not only has he been at the helm of Crockfit, an app that delivers training programmes for use in the gym or at home, which saw a boom during the COVID pandemic and the national lockdowns here in the UK, he's considered one of the most influential figures in fitness, with a massive online community made up of over a million people. He's modelled for top international brands and has been on the cover of Muscle and Fitness and Men's Fitness whilst appearing in multiple national and international publications including British GQ.

Alex has also worked with some of the world's biggest brands including Under Armour, Netflix, Spotify, FitBit and loads more.

I am so excited to welcome Mike Turlin to the podcast.

His mission is to help save as many lives as possible by getting people to open up and share their fears and worries.

His vision is to reduce the number of suicides, get more people to open up and talk, and make sure that everyone gets the help they need.

Born out of his attempts to end his own life several times in 2009 after dealing with the death of relatives and the breakdown of his marriage, Mike received a tax rebate and bought his dream car - a Bentley Continental.

He then realised he could use the attention the pricey vehicle gains to raise awareness around mental health.

Now he visits car shows across the country to try to give something back to others. He tells people his story and encourages people to talk about mental health.

Mike has appeared at about 50 car shows and spoken to hundreds of men and women. One person recently said they'd wished their son had spoken to him before he had taken his life.

I am so excited to welcome Ben Hyland to the podcast!

Ben is the founder of the incredibly successful want2race, after he had a vision for offering as many people as possible the chance to drive track and race cars with a fantastic prize on offer. Early years saw various concepts and prizes including a race in a Lotus Elise which Ben raced at the time.

In 2013 Ben met Ginetta Chairman Lawrence Tomlinson, and together they decided to offer a fantastic Ginetta race prize for the competition, with Ben switching marques to race successfully in Ginetta GT5 and G40 Cup. With race wins and championships under their belt, the want2race name grew within the Ginetta paddock and Team W2R (later to be named W2R Motorsport) was conceived in 2015. The competition side of the business grew as more and more people got on track in a Ginetta, alongside the team who have become one of the most successful Ginetta race teams to compete winning seven championships and series. Track days, special events and corporate driving experiences were now also on offer, with the company developing a niche for customer focussed on-track driving events.

2019 saw W2R's biggest development, with Lawrence and LNT Group investing in the brand and bringing the company in house - providing their future home at Donington Park where want2race now offer the UK's biggest range of Motorsport events and services for the track day virgin through to the experienced track driver.

Adrian Harris set up Opia in 2006, a specialist marketing company and built it up to a massive global business employing 120 staff.

From prison to owning supercars and... a boat - with Jason Cunningham

A multi business owner and serial entrepreneur, Jason started working at 14 doing a paper round earning a whopping £5.50 for delivering 180 papers, before working at ASDA stacking shelves and manning the checkouts.

As life progressed, Jason started a career in double glazing and sales, and at the age of 19 he was the number 1 branch manager in the company out of 88 branches. Life was good. Being so young and earning good money, Jason took his first step into buying sports cars. First came the Porsche at 20, followed by a Ferrari 360 spider at the age of 21… BUT in 2008, the recession hit hard. The company he was working for went bust and Jason was out of a job. He had no option but to go bankrupt. For the next few years he worked within double glazing before moving on to solar panels. Solar panels was a time in his life he regrets, and it ended badly. He was prosecuted and sent to prison for a short time.

Jason walked out of prison with £110 to his name and no idea what he wanted to do, knowing that he was no longer employable to any business. He was lucky enough that he had bought a Rolex in the past so off to the pawn shop he went, sold it and started to buy and sell second hand cars. Jason did that successfully for 6/7 months but it wasn't going to give him the life he wanted.

So 2017 Jason researched property and that’s what he decided he was going to do. He bought a business in a box estate agency and set off on his journey in property. Running an estate agent started well but it again just didn’t produce the income he wanted. He started looking at different property strategies, rent to rent, service accommodation, HMOs, property developments and many others, and Jason soon built a property and business empire. And the rest is history!

A real rags to riches, to rags again and then riches story, at just 33 Jason genuinely believes there is nothing in life he hasn’t been through and fought tooth and nail through, including, struggling at school being dyslexic, marriage, kids, bankruptcy, divorce and prison.

The art of pivoting: with Steve Deeks

I am thrilled to be joined by Steve Deeks. Steve is a Presenter, Trainer, Racer, and Aviator, having spent 9 years professionally racing up to British Formula 3, followed by sportscars and US IMSA prototypes, British GT, then one make saloons which then led to a 17 year career within the British Touring Car Championship.

What makes Steve even more interesting though, is the fact that he’s managed to master the art of pivoting – that is, the ability to develop new skills and competencies and adapt when required, to realise his dreams and in line with his very own evolving passions and interests.

Having spent a considerable amount of time racing, Steve is now a full-time Presenter and Trainer, presenting live shows and events worldwide, consulting to major car and motorcycle manufacturers, training product and sales teams and launching new products.

He is retained by the European agencies of Nissan and Lexus as part of their core training team, having enjoyed multi-year assignments with some of the biggest names in the car manufacturing space, including Ford, Audi, Mercedez, Mazda, Jaguar and Landrover.

He’s also a qualified ARDS Superlicense Instructor, having worked with some names we all might know such as Brian Johnson, Lord March, Jeremy Clarkson, Nigel Benn, Les Ferdinand, Mike Brewer, Greg James, Gary Numan, and even some royalty including Prince William and Prince Harry.

All of this, has come about through Steve’s mindset, evidenced by a constant desire to learn and strive to become better and help others fulfil their own true potential.

It’s fair to say that when I began this podcast, I never thought I’d one day have someone like Steve on as a guest. He is literally, the perfect person for this show. So, sit back, grab a cup of tea and enjoy hearing from someone who probably loves cars more than me, and has successfully built a career from scratch around it, because if there’s one thing I can absolutely guarantee, listening to this will add value to your life considerably!

Battling severe anxiety and panic attacks - a podcast with my wife, Zainab!

My phenomenal wife, is on this podcast!

For those who don't know Zainab, she's currently working at a senior level for a large, multinational organisation, having just been promoted!

What's more interesting though, is her story. Not exactly in the best shape of her life a few years ago, lacking confidence and not really in the most fulfilling of jobs, I've personally seen her grapple with the challenges of being a new wife whilst trying to succeed in a job and office that is predominantly male, losing weight and of course, living with someone like me - and that by itself, is hard!

Zainab's story begins in 2015 when her cousin tragically passed away in a car accident. It's from here that she started to suffer from panic attacks and anxiety, fuelled by the passing away of her grandfather and having to move away from home and start a new life.

Things got better over time, but it took a toll on her physical health. Overweight, unhealthy and suffering from low self esteem, Zainab finally joined a gym and took serious action to address the issue.

It's from here that, just like me, her burning desire to become more healthy led to a change in her mindset. Whereas before, she was rather closed to the idea of self development, she realised that ultimately, she was in control of everything in her life. She began reading, started to really address her anxiety and mental health, and develop higher levels of self esteem.

Now just 26, she now fully manages a team whilst being one of the youngest members of a senior group within her company, whilst providing tuition to children, running fitness classes for her community, running a business whilst being a fantastic wife!

I spoke to her about her journey, how she managed to overcome some of her biggest challenges, the lessons she's learned, and the advice she would give to others who may be experiencing what she's been through.
