I highly suggest you listen to part one of this episode. Before we drop the puck on [inaudible], don't worry, we'll be waiting for you beyond the big screen. OK, herb brooks got this team together. Just when they're getting ready to go to lake placid for the Olympics. They played a series of games against different teams. How did those turn out for the team USA team did her brooks to demonstrate and those early games that they were ready to take on the Soviet juggernaut team. I'll give you two to two examples. One is famous. Anybody who knows the story is going to know this one, they played team Norway and they tied them three to three, and herb's mind that is a game they should have won outright. No two ways about it. They should have destroyed team Norway because heard had been training them so hard that they were in the best shape of their lives. He said that you might not be the most skilled team in this tournament, but I swear to God you will be the most conditioned. And it's funny. I have to deviate for a second with my own local team, the blue jackets. We got a new president of hockey operations a few years ago. I don't know if he consciously borrowed this from herb or if it was just the planets aligning or what, but he said, you know, we might not be the most talented team out there. We will be in the best condition. We will play all, all 60 minutes. And I thought that was a really good way to do it because you can lose a game in the flick of a switch. Because if they couldn't do that against a quote unquote puny little team like Norway, how would they ever do it against the very best against the Soviets who were routinely beating all star teams from the NHL? How could they possibly accomplish that if they, if they can't beat team Norway, he caught several players looking into the stands and this is featured in the film, uh, looking at some attractive young ladies and thinking about where they'd like to take them for dinner. And herb herb caught him and he says, at the end of this really embarrassing [inaudible] tie, you don't want to skate during the game. You'll skate right now. So, uh, they get back on the ice and then that is what leads to the famous Herbie's in the dark scene. I mean, it, it's, it's very easy. And so you, you, you want to play all out all the time. And um, and that's what herb was doing to them and getting them in shape for. Because if they couldn't do that against a quote unquote puny little team like Norway, how would they ever do it against the very best against the Soviets who were routinely beating all star teams from the NHL? Um, you know, there's a history of warfare and all of that really juicy stuff, but sports kind of seemed to, to fall by the wayside. So maybe you can tell us a little bit about yourself and your interesting back story on how you got yourself interested in hockey and starting a hockey podcast. Uh, yeah, I'd love to. And uh, I spent my winters there with my mom, my older brother. And um, I, I really owe a lot of my love for hockey to my mom, which is kind of funny because she's never ever been a sports person. Uh, but she, she saw that I liked it and really encouraged me to do it and we would sit down and watch games and my neighbor actually had an NHL sports package and he would let us come over and watch the games and, you know, growing up, playing myself, we had about a two sheets of ice, was, was really, really big, could fit tons and tons of kids on it. You're right, you want my academic background? So I, um, uh, I uh, did my graduate work at Princeton theological seminary, um, did both a masters of divinity and a phd there. I went to Princeton because I was interested in studying the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament and the world expert in that topic was a man named Bruce Metzger who taught at Princeton theological seminary. And so I had, I had no other particular interest in going to princeton seminary other than this fellow top there. And so I went there and did a master's thesis with him, then did my phd there. And, uh, the field I worked on was the study of the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament. I'm the technical field of textual criticism. Um, while I was finishing my phd there, I started teaching at Rutgers University, uh, in New Jersey and was there for four years. And now I've been at a University of North Carolina for 30 years. So that's the rough academic background. So you got interested in the Bible through the Greek manuscripts. What drew you towards those? Uh, well, actually, um, I got interested in the Bible because of my personal religious commitments back when I was a young when I was a teenager. Um, and uh, I had a born again experience in high school and decided I wanted to know more about the Bible. And so my initial college experience was actually at a fundamentalist Bible school. I'm Moody Bible Institute and it was there that I was, I was very, very death angelical Christian and I believed at the time that the Bible's very words had been inspired by God in some way. Today we are going to wrap up our series on blade runner and blade runner 2049 and the past three episodes. We've discussed these two movies and the really powerful themes they uncovered and discussed. Today. We're going to discuss how the two movies fit together and explore a few more issues that came up and just try and tie these two movies together. I'm very happy to be joined again by interest of the reconsider podcast and as we well know since you've listened to the three previous episodes, we know that reconsider as a political and current events podcast, Eric and as partners and or help you contextualize current politics and history and broader forces and political theory, reconsider helps you rise above the one liners, the 140 character politics and the tribal narrative and their motto is we don't do the thinking for you. Thank you so much for coming on for a fourth time, Eric. Oh yeah, my pleasure. I mean obviously I love your show and one of the things I really love about talking about movies like this is it lets us look at, um, and by like this, I mean, I mean really good movies that do a great job exploring society, exploring humanity. They let us as people really look into humanity and looking to society today through in another place where it's sort of safe where we can say. Or we can say, Hey, what, what does this tell us about humans as a whole about society, about government, about how we get along with each other as a whole where we're not as emotionally tied up in it, right? Because this, this isn't our world. It's just a story. But we can learn a lot from it. And so it gives us this opportunity to ask some questions about ourselves that aren't as threatening. Whereas, you know, as, as I'm sure you're aware from the current political climate, if someone from your not from your political tribe asks these kinds of questions in a way that's not comfortable for you, you can get very defensive. And so movies can be a great place to be able to have some of those tough questions and when they're well built, they're. There are questions that are open to everyone. I think blade runner does a great job of that and I'm always happy to keep talking about it and other, you know, other great movies like that with you. Yeah. This is just a great movie as a sandbox to see how a lot of different ideas can be played out. Yeah, exactly. And the, I think the true brilliance of blade runner as a sci fi and something that is. I think the, the, what's it, the gold standard of CFI is it doesn't get us asking, oh, what happens when this technology comes around? That's interesting. Right? Today we are very happy to be joined by Eric of the reconsider podcast. And today we're going to take a deep dive into the movie Blade Runner 2049. And if you listen to last week's episode we talked about Blade Runner from 1982. So these are two great episodes to listen to back to back. So I highly suggest you go back and listen to that episode. But it's not required obviously. Not so much because you need that as background knowledge for this movie or episode it's just because it was a great show. So thank you so much Eric for being on today.Yeah my pleasure. I love your show and I love this movie and I love talking about it.Great. Thank you. So reconsider is a podcast about politics and news but it's really much more than just the news of the day sort of thing that you can get on TV or radio Zander and Eric which I'm sad to say Zander wasn't able to join us today but they help you contextualize current politics and history in the broader forces and in political theory reconsider helps you rise above the one liners. The 140 character politics and the tribal narratives. Their motto is We don't do the thinking for you and they really don't. And that's why I think it's such an amazing podcast. Do you have anything you could to add to that Eric.No thanks man. I think one of the things that I really like about reconsider is that Zander and I don't always agree on everything and we do a great job. I think showcasing how to discuss stuff in a way that you know in a way which we're really learning and one of these days I want to do a behind the scenes episode where we actually because we build these we build these episodes out with a lot of disagreement and we do a bunch of research and learn some stuff as we go. So I kind of want to do one of these blind to show a little more of how we do that. That's my favorite part is when we disagree and it's a good time.Yeah that's really cool. I'd love to listen to an episode like that. Now this movie Blade Runner 2049 is currently in the theaters. If you're listening to this show in the 2017 2018 time period it stars Ryan Gosling as Kay Harrison Ford reprising his role as Daccord there's Robin Wright Penn and a bunch of other great actors. It was released in October of 2017. We will definitely have a few spoilers in this episode but I'm not sure but I think this is a good way to help you understand the movie and maybe get a little different perspective when you're watching at church. And second fourth or fifth time and this film takes place about 30 years in the future after the original Blade Runner movie and it's all of these. Blade Runner from 1982 and then this newest Blade Runner are all based on the 1968 Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep which was a great novel too. Two great movies based on a great novel.Yeah I...

Hosted on Acast. Today we aren't specifically talking about a movie but instead we're revisiting a topic we discussed in a previous episode. Figure skating through the movie. Hello London. The 2013 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang South Korea are upon us and I am very happy to be joined by Ryan Stevens of the Schaik blog to give us a little primer on Olympic figure skating. Thank you so much for joining us today Ryan.Oh you're most welcome. It's a pleasure to speak with you.Ryan Stephens is a former competitive figure skater and S.F.A Skate Canada judge. He's been writing about figure skating history since 2013. Ryan has media credentials with Skate Canada covering the 2016 Canadian Tire national skating championships in Halifax as well as conducting interviews with many of the top figure skaters past and present. And in June 2017 Ryan released a full length biography of British actress figure skater and dancer Bellita Jepson. Turner who is a contemporary of Sanya Henie who we discussed in the Hello London episode which will be linked to this and the Schoenaerts for this episode as well as the links to Schaik guard so I highly suggest you go back and listen to that episode because it was a lot of fun and very informative. Before we get rolling Can you just tell us a little bit about yourself and your blogger.Absolutely. So I'm based in Halifax Nova Scotia. I'm here in Canada. For those of you that are down in the States and I write about skating history all around the world and I cried about a little bit I bounced around a little bit a released three bloggers a week covering a whole range of topics everything from how schooling might have developed in a certain country to a biography of a skater to look back at an event. So we just kind of bump bump around a little bit and it's really a lot of fun.Yeah that sounds like it that it gives you a lot of avenues to discover and explore different areas of the sport. Absolutely. Now can you just give us maybe a little bit of history or context to figure skating as an Olympic sport.Certainly. So the first time that figure skating was actually included in the Olympic Games was in 1998 it was included in the summer Olympic Games in London England and there were three categories pardon me for categories. There were men's and women's singles skating pairs skating and a category that was only ever held at that first Olympics called special figures were skaters would trace out very intricate designs on the ice that they created themselves. I highly suggest you go back and listen to part 1 of this conversation. Don't worry we'll be waiting for you beyond the big screen. You brought up those ideas of neech Nietzschean and the Christian elements and all those really come together when Roy confronts Dr. Tai Rao. What happens there and what how do those themes all tied together that you've brought up that you brought up earlier. I it's funny I as I was making my notes I was thinking oh this is my favorite scene. Now this is my favorite scene. Now this one and I have six I realized six favorite scenes so this is one of them. And what happens is Roy finally gets to Dr. Tyrrel by tricking Sebastian and then coercing Sebastian and they get access. What's interesting by play is by playing and finishing the same moves as what's called The Immortal Game in chess. So it's a famous 1400's chess game where the I forget the guy's name. Whatever where the guy who ended up winning sacrificed tons of pieces to fool his opponent into making a move that exposed the king and so yeah checkmate. With some minor pieces at the end those pieces of course represent those minor pieces represent the replicants who are treated like pawns. The King of course is Dr. Tyrrel and so once Roy makes those moves over the phone. Tyrrel actually Roy tells Sebastion to do it. Subash makes those moves over the phone and Tyrel is very impressed and he says something must be on your mind Subash. C'mon. And the big reveal. Roy is there. Tyrrel doesn't seem to surprise he actually says like I'm surprised it took me so long to get here. He knew that Roy was coming to talk to him. They have this discussion over whether Tyrrel can give Roy more life but Tyrrel cannot and they in that discussion Tyrrel tries to reason with Roy saying that he's lived this incredibly powerful. Flourishing life especially compared to other humans and he has the quote the candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long. It's this great scene of his face being very fatherly and in fact of course being the character of God he created Roy he decided how long Roy got to live. And he's judging Roy as having lived a good life and sort of saying it's okay for you to die and here's with a Nietzschean moment comes up. God reveals Himself to be powerless to help Roy and to do anything for Roy. And so in that moment God dies for him right. Roy realizes that God is helpless and worthless to him. And Roy is so Royse still loves God as his father and he actually when he realizes that nothing can be done he holds Tyrrel by the face and kisses him on the lips. But then in holding Tyrrel he uses his superhuman strength to brutally crushed Tyrrell's skull and he digs his fingers into Tyrrell's eyes which in this movie are the window to the soul. Today we are going to talk about the 1982 movie Blade Runner based on the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. The book and the film are set in the near future. Postapocalyptic dystopia. One of my favorite genres as is common with the dystopian science fiction genre. Blade Runner addresses a number of political and political science issues political theory and even philosophy are important for our frameworks. While Blade Runner is not overtly political it does tie deeply into questions of humanist and theological philosophy and to morality as well. Ultimately all of this is critical for us deciding on what political action which is just our own moral personal moral action on collective scale to take. That's why it's fascinated Eric for so long and I'm very happy to be joined by Eric and Zander hosts of reconsider podcasts. Thank you guys so much for coming on today. We are happy to be here. Thanks for having us. Reconsider is actually a political podcast to help you contextualize current politics and history and broader forces and political theory reconsider helps you rise above the one liners. The 140 character politics and tribal narratives. Their motto is We don't do the thinking for you and they really don't. That's why it's such an amazing podcast and one of my personal favorites. Thanks. Before we dig too deeply here's some production details. We watched the final cut which is the director's addition. Eric you had commented on that. Why do you think that that's a better cut of the film than it went through several evolutions. Yeah I actually went through for the theatrical cut the international CUT THE DIRECTOR'S CUT AND THE FINAL CUT THE FINAL CUT being the one that Ridley Scott the director liked the best. And I have strong opinions on this and I think most other diehard Bladerunner fans do. There's a consensus generally that the final cuts the right one not only because Ridley Scott liked best. I don't know if Philip K. Dick liked it best but the reason we like it best is that the theatrical cut has a number of scenes. The biggest of which is the ending. The second biggest of which is the fact that Harrison Ford does a monologue. Does it like a backwards memory monologue. Like a lot of noir like she walked in and was you know the most beautiful woman I'd ever say. Mike's up to hair kind of thing. And unfortunately what that does is it not only sounds stupid in the context of what is otherwise a beautiful movie but it also takes away the opportunity for you to do that thinking yourself so you know sort of as is our podcast motto I hate when things do the thinking for me. And so the the both the director's cut and the final cut take that those two key elements out. The Final Cut adds another element which is a unicorn dream that's really important to how you interpret. One of the big questions of the movie so if you guys haven't seen it yet on the show I know that listening. I'd h...

Hosted on Acast. Thank you so much for coming on today, James.James Early: My pleasure, Steve. I'm excited to be here.Steve Guerra: Just to briefly introduce 12 Years a Slave, the movie documents the real life events of Solomon Northup, a free black man who lived in the mid-1800s New York, who was captured as a fugitive slave on a trip to Washington, D.C. Northup, also sometimes called Northrup, his freedom, and even his identity are stripped from him, and he continually finds himself in harsher and harsher conditions where he has to make even deeper critical moral decisions. Very briefly, the production details. It's based on the book, 12 Years a Slave by Solomon Northup. The screenplay is by John Ridley. It's directed by Steve McQueen, a different Steve McQueen, not the Steve McQueen from the '70s. It has a runtime of 134 minutes, and it did very well at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay. And it has almost 100% Rotten Tomatoes and MetaCritic. The starring character of Solomon, also known as Plat when he was abducted as a slave, was played by the English actor Chiwetel Ejiofor. One of the slave masters was played by Michael Fastbender. We also have a relatively new actress, Lupita Nyong'o, who plays Patsy, an important slave character and a friend of Solomon. And then we also have Benedict Cumberbatch who plays William Ford, who was really very important in the book and important in the movie as well. And along the way we'll get into some of the other characters, particularly Brad Pitt, who ... I mean, he's a...

Hosted on Acast.

It's a German movie and it's German name as Das Leben Der Anderen and we are joined by Travis Dow. Travis is really the podcasting man of all seasons. He is the host of countless podcasts including but not limited to the history of Germany. The history of alchemy Bohemican can the history of Africa and the German language podcast Americana for Euch is how you might say no. That's right yeah. And did I catch all of them Travis. I think so. Who's counting. Yeah. Travis thank you so much for being on. I thought this movie is perfect for you. I really felt like even watching this movie I was like Travis is the perfect guy for this movie yeah. And this is a movie that gripped me like I. Yeah definitely. Very interesting movie and I grew up in Germany and lived in Prague. And this movie was kind of like you know I and I moved to Prague for the curiosity of like living on the other side you know the life of the others to see what that was like and how the city is changing and all that. And you know what are they doing now. Czech Republic a new country and this type of movie just feeds into my curiosity of you know how it was and I eat it up for sure. Yeah. This movie is was released in 2009 but it's set in the East Germany of the mid 1980s really at the tail end of the Cold War just a few years before the fall of the Berlin Wall and as we usually do we're going to use this movie as a way to get into a deeper conversation about East Germany and the Eastern Bloc countries as well as how countries how these countries progressed after the fall of the Berlin Wall which was a critical element of this movie The Lives of the others. To some production details about the movie the director and writer was Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck. It's a German language film but it is available with English subtitles. It got a really high. Rotten Tomatoes of 93 percent. And I met a critic of 89 percent which I think is the highest of any movie we've done so far. It was filmed throughout Berlin which we will talk quite a bit about it as a runtime of 137 minutes. It was the 2006 winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film and it won just a pile of German and European awards. On top of that the movie does have a very high powered German cast but most of these actors I don't think wouldn't be Redah readily recognizable for most American audiences or non German audiences. Oelrich Umuahia. Jeez these some of these names are going to stretch my rudiment after all. Well Mirah. Yeah he plays Captain Gerd Wiesler and he's a Stasi officer. Don't worry we'll be waiting for you be on the big screen. 00:00:12 What was going on in Luther's mind when he nailed up those the 95 theses on that cathedral door did he. Now at that point that he was doing something really big or did he think that he was just sparking a debate. 00:00:31 That's one of the big discussions about that event will probably never be fully resolved. It should be said that putting 95 putting theses up on the castle church door was how you organized a debate. And he was just asking to organize a debate. It's not like he was you know shoving this up the pope's nose or something like that. But and it's also questionable whether Luther did it himself. Some people have suggested he had an assistant go do it. That stuff doesn't really matter. He certainly knew that you know some of his points were contentious but he figured that it would be you know talked about discussed quietly amongst the professionals in Wittenberg. I think that said you see this a little bit in the 2003 movie. There is a character that was named I believe Lucas Cranach who was the court painter of Frederick the wise who was also one of the early success stories of printing. 00:01:38 And you see him twice in the 2003 movie and the first time he goes and reads the the the 95 theses and he yanks him down and goes to his assistant. We've got to get this printed or something along those lines and then they're running off copies and everything. I think one thing to say is that the printing of Luther's material was extremely important. But I also think that it was a little bit more organized and that's where you can sort of go back and forth about whether he planned this to be a big thing. I don't know if he and Cranach got together and said definitely Let's get this printed and get it widely publicized.
