Acclaimed Croatian-Australian singer, songwriter and performer Michael Simic brings a rollicking and revealing whale of a tale to Kew Court House. In the Belly of the Whale is Simic's own story as a new dad juggling home life with life on the road. Radical, Blak, and funny as hell, First Nations theatre company, A Daylight Connection presents this hilarious and irreverent

show is a portrait of what it means to be an artist right now. The play centres on a character called The Master, an auteur whose exponential success and dizzying sense of self-importance comes crashing into a severe case of writer’s block. Played by Carly Sheppard, the character lampoons the idea of the genius artist, and pokes fun at the arts industry, while also speaking to the very real struggles of artists trying to make meaningful work in an increasingly impossible climate.

The 228-page artist book is a continuation of Hamer’s iterative art project of the same name, presented at Linden New Art from May to August 2024. It combines Hamer’s evocative series of screen prints, monoprints, and hand-stitched artworks, created through the redaction and anonymisation of personal medical letters and imaging contributed by patients across the globe.

Molly Hadfield Social Justice Oration artist Sheena Mathieson. Sheena Mathieson is a Northern suburbs visual artist and grassroots community arts facilitator, whose varied and eclectic practice Woman-made, is underpinned by a respect for human uniqueness and the environment. Sheena uses art as a tool for connection and empowerment. She facilitates the long running, truly inclusive Art for All Abilities programs at Span Community House in Thornbury, works with artists living with disabilities and runs her own creative workshops and vibrant community-based art projects.

As an arts facilitator Sheena uses creative multifaceted activities to bring people together and brings happiness to all - young and old, disabled and abled, women and men. She believes that we are all creative individuals with different skills, strengths and vulnerabilities, all capable of making beautiful and meaningful art given the right opportunities. ‘We are all artists (even if we didn’t think we were one) who play a vital role in contributing to innovation, local identity and wellbeing in our community.’ In short, she believes everyone deserves the right to their expressive place in the limelight.

Sheena is interested in the notions of sustainability and place; making evocative art from recycled, donated, uncovered and found materials, combined with quality media. Her particular interest is in experimental printmaking, in combination with other media such as collage and paint.

Sheena is colourful, sassy and sensitive, and she enjoys the unexpected – challenging the medium, and producing works which are joyous, spirited and colourful, in every way. Her story is one which inspires, and shows an awareness, and celebration, of who and what is around her.

Artist George Petrou OAM is a highly accomplished graphic designer and renowned portrait artist. In 2010, following a cancer diagnosis, George turned to portrait painting with a renewed sense of purpose. Determined that if he were to overcome his illness, he would devote more time to honouring the extraordinary Australian men and women who have made profound sacrifices and contributed significantly to humanitarian efforts both nationally and internationally.

With a deep passion for Australian history, George found that painting became his personal form of ‘chemo’ therapy—an artistic endeavour that allowed him to channel his resilience and appreciation for the nation’s rich heritage.

George is proud to introduce his latest art project, The Art of Humanity, following the success of his previous book, The Art of Sacrifice.

The Art of Humanity explores the essence of compassion, generosity, and the unwavering commitment to helping those in need. Through compelling portraits and narratives, the project seeks to inspire and deeply resonate with its audience.

In recognition of his contributions, George was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in June 2020 for his ‘Services to the Visual Arts and to Veterans.’ He also serves as a patron for TPI Victoria Inc. His esteemed portraits are displayed in prestigious institutions worldwide, including museums in France, the United Kingdom, Greece, and Dubai, as well as Government House in Canberra and various military institutions across Australia.

Melbourne based guitarist Kathleen Halloran, who is fast making herself known as one of the countries most exciting and in demand young performers. She works regularly with the likes of Kate Ceberano, Felix Riebl, Katie Noonan, Gorgi Coghlan and Jimi Hocking to name a few, and her guitar work has been heard on countless recordings, in orchestra pits for many musical theatre productions, and on major festival stages all around the country.

As a solo artist, Kathleen continues to impress and make a name for herself performing at events and festivals including the 2023 Adelaide Guitar Festival, The Melbourne Guitar Show, Crossroads Guitar Festival, The Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Stonnington Jazz Festival, and the Melbourne International Women’s Jazz festival.

We have Lara Thoms APHIDS Executive Director about the upcoming performance. For thirty years, award-winning experimental arts organisation APHIDS have been creating unexpected art across Australia and around the globe. Collaborating with thousands of people across Melbourne to make new work, this year, APHIDS celebrates its lineage in one extraordinary night with An Evening of Performance II on the 5 July at Arrow on Swanston.

An Evening of Performance II will be filled with performances by Pony Cam, Deborah Kayser, Thea Baumann, Tra Mi Dinh, Lz Dunn, Catherine Ryan, Sammaneh Pourshafighi, DJ Sullivan and more. Michelle's work confronts the dismissive language of chronic health issues while delving into issues of gendered language, access and erasure in this striking new exhibition. When you consider the Victorian Government's enquiry into women's pain, the timeliness of this exhibition could not be more relevant. Michelle is known for her sustained practice with a focus on language which asks us to confront our fears, beliefs and aspirations. Michelle Hamer is a past winner of the Australian Tapestry Workshop’s Architecture in Tapestry Prize (2015), and the Fishersghost Macability Prize (2022). She works in the following mediums: hand stitching, digital photography and drawing. Michelle's exhibition is an integral story on the disenfranchisement felt by the sufferers of chronic health conditions, especially women.

After 5pm we will be speaking with Zaelea Nolte from the National Institute of Circus Arts upcoming performance called FAMOUS (14-22 June).

Zaelea started circus around the age of 6 and it continued to be a stable part of her life from that point on. Over the years she tried many different disciplines and is currently specialising in static trapeze, tightwire and Chinese pole while studying the Bachelor of Circus Arts at the national institute of circus arts in Melbourne in Australia. Combining her love for conceptual expression and acrobatics, Zaelea creates captivating performances that merge storytelling, symbolism, and emotion, taking audiences on transformative journeys. Her passion for fashion shines as she designs and sews visually stunning costumes, enhancing her artistic flair.

First up is James Lynch is the curator at Deakin University for Art Collection and Galleries team. He curates a program of exhibitions at the Deakin University Art Gallery at the Burwood Campus. This year he has curated over 5 major exhibitions including projects such as: Charlie Sofo: Tutto, Sarah Goffman’s exhibition Garbage and the Flowers and the group exhibition Holding in the hand. He is passionate about culture, community and alternative art histories and is also part of the visual arts advisory group for the City of Whitehorse. Dr Trevor Graham is a television and film producer and director of factual programs with 40 years’ experience in the business. He has worked for Australia’s two public broadcasters in key production and commissioning roles. As an independent Trevor Graham has personally produced, directed and executive produced some of Australia’s most acclaimed documentaries for the ABC, SBS and a multitude of international public broadcasters. His 30-plus documentaries have spanned a diverse range of stories and genres; arts, science, history and contemporary content.

Dr Niyeti Sharma is a dermatologist. Dr Sharma undertook her undergraduate medical degree (MBBS) at Adelaide University before undertaking her internship at Royal Melbourne Hospital. Dr. Sharma spent a year at the National Skin Centre in Singapore learning the nuances of treating Asian skin and their diseases. Dr Sharma has a sub-speciality in paediatric dermatology. Dr. Sharma also has a Masters of Public Health (MPH), specialising in nutrition, policy and advocacy. Alongside her role as MoleMap’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sharma also runs her own dermatology practice to help her patients approach skin concerns in a holistic manner.
