may the uncertainty of these days

]]> I just wrote this song over the past couple of days. I’m pretty sure I stole the chords and the melody from another song in the podcast. Oops. I was looking for some hope in these days and a friend mentioned Julian of Norwich, so of course I went back to her glorious visions and remembered “all will be well, all will be well, all will be well.” Now she survived the plague, so she saw some stuff. This wasn’t a light statement for her. Somehow she held all the trouble and the pain alongside joy and hope. She moved through the suffering to the heart of God. She wasn’t avoiding the reality of her days — I feel like she dove down into it with abandon and there she found freedom and connection. She found a love that held all these these things together. So I just started singing those words, all will be well, over and over again and it helped it start to sink down in my soul. Eventually this song happened. Here’s all will be well.

As we go

May we go together,

calling each other by our true names—

our eyes amazed at each one we see,

shining like the sun.

May you find the river of peace

flowing through every moment—

alongside your doubts

and fears

and heartaches,

underneath your joys and excitement.

May you feel it rushing between your toes

I wrote this song for Palm Sunday a few years back.  It’s really a musing on Jesus’ gracious movement between solitude and service, humanity and the divine.  He finds rhythms that lead to openheartedness and help him find a way of justice and peace while living under the thumb of Empire.  Jesus moves in unexpected ways that invite us to find the trajectory of grace in the dust and shadow.


Here’s a blessing for the week:


As you go,

May you find yourself more awake.

More aware of the warm sun and the cool breeze.

More attuned to birdsong.

More attentive to each unique smile you encounter.

May you find yourself more awake.

More aware of the heavy loads folks bear.

More aware of each possibility for love to flourish.

]]> After a week of snow in Kentucky, we turn our thoughts to warmer climates. This began on a back porch on Sanibel Island and ended up on a driveway in Kentucky. There are places and times when we seem to naturally connect with the ground of our being. Sometimes a change of scenery can help us find these deep connections. Maybe these moments of connection can help us discover that the divine is always near.
