What is Steam Punk? Steampunk is a genre of science fiction where the world never really progressed past steam technology. It focuses on the hand crafted or man-made, instead of more industrial practices. Co-owners of Dirigible Brewing Co. Colin Knirk and Chris Loring have created a Brewery/Tap Room located in Littleton Ma that features beer and hard seltzer, but also non-alcoholic offerings such as craft sodas, coffee, and flavored seltzers. One of our favorite part of this brewery is the taproom which features a ton of Steampunk Elements and not to mention a wide variety of tabletop and strategy games.

Athletic Brewing which started in Connecticut has now two massive breweries (Connecticut and California) dedicated to brewing only N/A and are widely available all across the country. The Girls Brewery

It all started with a dream, couple of pots, a stovetop, a bucket, some hoses, and of course malt,hops, and yeast. That concoction would prove to be the tipping point that thrust us into the endless possibilities of the craft brew world. In a small apartment in Boston we stumbled through the instructions, of course adding our own twists on the recipe like a couple of dark chocolate bars and vanilla beans to add flavor to our stout. We felt like mad scientist!

Many years have pasted since that fist brew day in that tiny kitchen in the city. Our founder, has spent over a decade working in the Brewery industry before eventually deciding to open up his own. Sometime over those years some of us became mothers and fathers. All of us strive to create a better tomorrow for our children and loved ones.

Let’s make a better today! We have the opportunity to elevate

the lives of our Mothers and Daughters right now.

Being kind and helping each

other rise up seems like a good place to start.

This weeks guest started like many of our other guests with a dream and probably a couple ruined stove tops.

Founder Bob Pepin of The Girls Brewery is taking a different approach to getting his name out across the state of Massachusetts.

He calls The Girls Brewery a nomadic brewery with the dream of opening a brick and mortar location near Bridgewater.

Have you heard of Ebenezer Mudgett and the Pine Tree Riot? Well it’s A True Story of New Hampshire Colonists Who Defied British Rule in the Spring of 1772, Foreshadowing the Boston Tea Party. That is who our guest this week pays homage to with their name Able Ebenezer.

This local brewery in Merrimack NH is veteran owned and operated, the team produced everything on site with a 10 barrel brew house.

We got the chance to talk to Mike who fell in love with craft beer after visiting Stone Brewing.

When given the opportunity to build a brewery of his own with a buddy from his Army days (Carl), he sold everything that didn't fit into the back of his pickup truck, including his beloved motorcycle, and moved to New Hampshire. Well the rest is history.

This dynamic duo focused on making Great North Aleworks goal's to be craft flavorful, food friendly beers, while maintaining a fanatical devotion to quality. Safe to say they've done that. The pair who have roots strong within the New Hampshire beer scene back starting in 2007 as members of "Brew Free or Die". Then fast forward to 2010 when Rob won the Samuel Adams Patriot Homebrew Competition, from there well we will let them tell the rest of their story.

Daydreaming Brewing Co.

Andy and Alana have been promoting and elevating the New Hampshire craft beer scene for nearly the last eleven years. It all started with their beer bar Cask & Vine, which focused on small batch craft beer, and being a location which provided an avenue for local breweries to experiment with base beers and/or try their hand at cask ales.\

The duo then decided to take the plunge and open in April of 2020 Daydreaming Brewing Co. This brewery has made a name for themselves by brining the London pub experience back to New Hampshire, complete with “proper” English pints.

We had a lot of fun with Andy and Alana and we know you’ll fall in love with them just like we did. Plus try and figure out when they both sleep with all the projects they are involved with.

We were lucky enough to talk to one of the OGs in the beer scene Bill Cherry from Switchback Brewing. When Switchback opened initially it was their goal “to brew unexpected, relatable, great tasting beer” safe to say 20 years later they’ve kept true to their goal. The team over a Switchback keeps true to their brewing methods by keeping the beer unfiltered and carbonating it 100% naturally. Not to mention they have probably the largest selection of Smoked Beers we’ve ever seen!

This 4,000 square foot slice o’ paradise (as they call it) in downtown Amesbury Ma is where you can enjoy a plethora of different types of beer that you likely will never have that same beer ever again. This exciting model keeps their patrons coming back for more and keeps the brewers always looking for what's next. While we enjoy this model it is a bummer we might never have their Oktoberfest again it was quite good. Or will we? Who knows, we don't .

Founded in 2013 at their first location on Congress Street, Boston Fort Point, they’ve now grown to 5 locations! Their most recent being a new location in Canton which has parking to spare, a huge patio with plenty of seating, and on site food options.

Jamaica Plain has a vast history in brewing, as the water from the aquifer along the Stony Brook River was some of the freshest and cleanest around; and the relatively cheap land. This made for the perfect marriage for Jamaica Plain to have nearly 24 breweries around the early 1900. Fast forward to 2021 we're talking with Turtle Swamp who is right in the middle of JP is one of the few in the area. Owners John Lincecum and Nicholas Walther want to add to the history of JP and were quoted saying “We both love Jamaica Plain, and the fact we own a brewery right in our own neighborhood means we can add to the history. In the heart of Haverhill, Massachusetts, right on the banks of the mighty Merrimack River resides a brew pub, called the Tap Brewing Co.

“The Tap”, has been around since the late 19th Century originally as a restaurant and bar, but is now a beloved brew pub. The Tap has had a pretty impressive lineage of brewers pass through their door like Jon Curtis and Tod Mott. Keeping the tradition of excellence and consistency in the beer is important to current head brewer, Jason Barnum. We talked to Jason this week who started as a patron at the Brewery and ultimately worked his way up to being the Head Brewer. He told us "I'm doing a collaboration beer with the band Summoner, Widowmaker and this Podcast Up in Canada called Vox and Hops who is going to organize a beer and metal festival and release a beer, you want to cover it?". Matt talks about reaching a point where he knew that he needed to do something to honor Melody's memory and that's where Wandering Soul Beer Company came into existence. This week we take you just past the White Mountain’s off of Route 3 to a Small Mill Town called Lancaster NH.

We met up with our guests this week, Michael and Cara of The Copper Pig Brewery. We discussed some of the trails and tribulations of opening a brewery in a former mill building and trying to balance having excellent food with excellent beer.

Right now the Copper Pig is open Thursday through Sunday, for outdoor seating and will be opening the indoor seating on June 18th 2020. The brewery is still open for takeout food and beer to go with their growlers.

Gilded Skull Brewing

Similar to many home brewers, Neil Kade dreamed of having his own brewery one day. Although it’s not exactly the dream he expected, he’s now commercially brewing beer for New England.

We first heard of Neil and Gilded Skull Brewing after our friends the Mass Brew Bros. wrote this article in February 2019 and their follow up article released just a couple weeks ago.

In the article we found that not only was Neil trying to launch Gilded Skull Brewing but he was also diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer and fighting for a future. Neil was quoted saying “all we wanted was normalcy, to start our family and build this little beer project into a brewery.”

Flash forward to the present, after successful surgery and a grueling 12 months of chemotherapy Neil is currently cancer free and he and his wife are expecting a child in a few weeks. On top of everything, Neil is in the middle of releasing his first beer, Gilded Empire, a 7.2% ABV New England IPA featuring Citra, Cashmere, and Lotus hops along with spelt and flaked oats. Herb Lindtveit

Earlier this week scrolling through our feeds on social media we read about the passing of Herb Lindtveit.

For those who do not know Herb.

He was more than the brewery facilities manager at Jack’s Abby; he was the keystone that held these walls together, an educator that never stopped sharing his knowledge and passion, and a family man that was loved by all, not just those related by blood. Herb leaves behind a wife and four children.

Since Herb’s passing we’ve seen countless posts honoring him and thanking him for his contributions to our beloved industry.

Despite never having the pleasure of meeting Herb directly, this loss hit us hard, we kept thinking how can we help?

Well we found out earlier in the week that Jack’s Abby is going to be brewing a beer in commemoration of Herb. At the request of the family, Jack’s Abby will be releasing a limited edition lager, In Herb We Trust.

All proceeds will be going directly to supporting the Lindtveit family.

The wait is over! We are finally revealing our new host!

But before we do, we have some sad news. Our beloved co-host Emily will be stepping away from the podcast. Emily has helped in countless ways bringing the podcast to the place it is today. Without Emily's contributions, Brew Roots as you know was not possible, and for that, we are forever grateful.

Luckily, for us, Emily will continue to contribute to the podcast for the foreseeable future.
