Important to Tracy, and indeed her book, is the role of the servants at Hever Castle and she tells us how she used everyday household details to create authenticity—fireplaces, relationships with servants, and the sensory experience of Tudor life.

Rogues, scallywags, fraudsters and criminals have all trodden the corridors of the UK Houses of Parliament. In this conversation with Philippa Lacey, Debbie Kilroy discusses the themes of her new book ‘Members Behaving Badly.’

The discussion covers political misbehaviour over the past 4 centuries, exploring various scandals, notorious figures, and the evolution of public perception regarding politicians. Hidden Women Codebreakers of WW2 - revealed!

Pirates! The men and women who dominated the seas

The Hidden History of Henry VIII's England: Unveiling the Secrets

In England in 1536, a number of small monasteries were dissolved, their assets removed to the Head of the Church in England, which was now Henry VIII, and the people either pensioned off or sent on to find places at one of the hundreds of monastic institutions remaining across the country.

The large scale survey commissioned by the king, know as the Valor Ecclesiasticus, was a wide ranging and deeply thorough record of church assets, which covered the majority of the country and, critically, the population. It is far more detailed than its earlier, and more famous, sister survey the ‘Domesday Book’ and it reveals in incredible detail the lives of ordinary people and the landscape you would have seen if you lived at this time.

In this interview we also learn that a total, full scale dissolution of all monasteries in England and Wales was not the plan, how passive resistance was strong and tells us a lot about Henry VIII’s actual power, and how women were uniquely affected by the closures.

Alone for 48 hours in a Priest Hide

Phil’s 48 hours in a Priest Hide

Harvington Hall Manager, Phil Downing, is spending 48 hours in a priest hide, to raise money toward the upkeep of the Hall.

The Priest Hide Phil will be spending 2 whole days in, is one of, if not, the most famous in the country - the swinging beam hide in Dr Dodds Library. It is thought to have been built by master carpenter Nicolas Owen (who died under torture at the Tower of London following his capture by priest hunters at nearby Hindlip Hall in 1606).

Phil is in no danger from priest hunters but it’s a nonetheless gruelling endeavour, and one which he was visibly nervous about in the final hours before it began.

In my interview with him, just a couple of hours before he entered the priest hide, he talked about his experiences of doing this before, once for 24 hours and a second time for 36 - he also swears this will be the last time (we shall see)! What is not in doubt is Phil’s love for Harvington Hall and his determination to see it well looked after during his stewardship.

Edward II was murdered at Berkeley Castle in 1327 and buried in Gloucester Abbey (now Cathedral), and the only area of debate so far has been how he was murdered; smothered or red hot poker? Ian Mortimer has gathered compelling evidence that Edward wasn't actually murdered at all!

19 years of Civil War, known as the Anarchy, was between first cousins King Stephen and Empress Matilda, but Sharon Bennett Connolly persuasively argues that it could be more accurately be thought of as a conflict between Queen Matilda, Stephen's wife and the Empress Matilda.

Tudor and Anglo Saxon Treasures

Gloucester Cathedral, St Peter’s Abbey before the dissolution in 1540, was founded in 1541. The ‘Deed of Endowment’, one of three documents created for the occasion features in this video complete with flattering portrait of King Henry VIII, a Garter Badge, badge of the Prince of Wales and the original green and white (the Tudor colours) silk cord which once held the great seal.

The oldest items in the archive are pages from Aelfric's The Lives of Saints which had been reused as decorative pages in a later book binding. They are around 1000 years old and look as fresh as the day they were written!

The most significant item to the Cathedral is its ‘Historia,’ created by monks at the Abbey in the 1390s and recording as much of the Abbey’s history as they were able to. Archivist Rebecca Phillips is fairly confident that they didn’t have written records from which to source information and so this is the first time the oral history of the abbey had been written down. It would then have been copied and distributed to daughter houses of the Abbey to share their story and engender a sense of belonging.

We get to see these items up close in this video plus an exquisitely embroidered King James Bible, the first Chapter Book of the Cathedral containing the signature of William Laud, and an ironic reliquary. The reliquary is thought to contain a fragment of the stake on which Bishop Hooper, Bishop of Gloucester, was burned during Mary I’s reign. It’s a beautifully carved and decorated box, the irony being in that Hopper was opposed to the use of relics.

Instead of my live this week I am publishing a brand new ‘on-location’ interview. This, the first one in this ongoing series, was recorded inside the Library of Gloucester Cathedral, where the Cathedral’s 6000 precious documents and books are stored, overseen and looked after by Cathedral Archivist Rebecca Phillips.

Last time we covered the sack of Rome in 1527 and, in episode 1, the build up to it. We learned how the breakdown in relations between Francois I of France, Charles V Holy Roman Emperor, Charles duke of Burgundy and Pope Clement VII led to this indescribably horrific humanitarian disaster.

In this, the second of 3 episodes, recorded live, discussing the factors going on in Rome which effected Henry VIII's ultimately failed attempt to secure a divorce from his first wife Katherine of Aragon, we look at the Sack of Rome itself. WARNING - this episode will include descriptions of act of violence, all which occurred in 1527, almost 500 year ago but still upsetting. In the previous episode we focussed on the events which led up to Imperial troops appearing at the walls of Rome, bent on violence. It is against this backdrop that Henry VIII petitioned the pope for a divorce from Katherine of Aragon. In the next episode we will look at Henry's 'Great Matter' and how events in Rome would have a lasting impact on the church, and therefore population, of England.

Exactly 12 years apart, Charles I and Oliver Cromwell lost their heads to the axe. In Cromwell's case over 2 years after he'd died!

The day that changed Anne Boleyn's fate

Did Anne Boleyn write to Henry VIII from the Tower of London while she was a prisoner?

I am on the road today (check out my Instagram to see what I am up to @british_history_tours) but I have pre-recorded a special episode of Tea Time History Chat Live. Special guest, Amanda Glover joined me to talk about her groundbreaking research into the letter supposedly written by Anne Boleyn, to her husband Henry VIII, 4 days into her incarceration at the Tower of London and 13 days before her execution. Historians have long debated the letter’s authenticity and whether Anne did actually write the letter. Amanda’s research adds more clues to this long debated mystery.

Hever Castle as Anne Boleyn would have known it, PLUS a rediscovered home of Henry VIII!

Hever Castle

Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn has always been a special place to visit, not least because you are moving around the space that she and her family once lived. With a new permanent exhibition at the Castle it is now easy to feel like you have travelled back in time and to the house of Thomas and Elizabeth Boleyn and their children Mary, Anne and George. I went to visit the castle recently and am very grateful to Assistant Curator Kate McCaffrey for showing me around the new rooms and giving me a fascinating insight into the research that went into the exhibition and also what the curatorial team's research has revealed about how the rooms were used and what happened here during Anne's time. You can hear mine and Kate's chat, as we walk around the rooms, on this channel, it will be released in August.

I also visited West Horsley Place, in Surrey, this week. Unsure of what I was to find, I didn't initially include it in the title and thumbnail for this episode but WOW that a fascinating and historically significant place it turned out to be! Owned twice by Henry VIII, who made alterations and additions to the property showing that he must have used it with some frequency, but also the venue for a dinner for him when his cousin, Henry Courtney, lived there - a dinner for which the menu survives!! Arthur Tudor, the lost Prince

Elizabeth I is released from the Tower, First Vaccination Documented

In 1554, Elizabeth (future Elizabeth I) was released from the Tower of London to house arrest at Woodstock. She had been held for weeks despite no evidence to implicate her in the recent Wyatt Rebellion to overthrow her half-sister Mary and put her on the throne. The date chosen was probably deliberate and could have been meant to send a message to Elizabeth that she was still alive only by the mercy of her sister, it was 19th May, the 18th anniversary of her mother's execution at the Tower. The next anniversary to fall in this week is that of the first documented smallpox vaccination by Dr Edward Jenner. A discovery that would have greatly benefitted Elizabeth who almost died from the disease in 1562. Jenner has come under criticism for testing his new technique on an 8 year old boy. However, I have covered the context in which he decided to do that and why it is not as bad as it seems.

HMS Gloucester - the accident which nearly killed a Prince?

On 6th May 1682, HMS Gloucester struck a sandbank off the coast of Norfolk and sank. 250 men lost their lives. The ship had been carrying a very important person, the king's brother James, Duke of York. Some people even think he was to blame! The ship was rediscovered in 2007 and has been described as "the single most significant historic maritime discovery since the raising of the Mary Rose in 1982" ( Claire Jowitt, University of East Anglia) .

Anne Boleyn: how did it all go wrong?

When Anne Boleyn was arrested on 2nd May and taken to the Tower of London, this was the beginning of a carefully orchestrated scheme to bring down the Queen of England. Everything done was in careful balance of public and private. In this discussion I give extra insight into why Anne was not taken in through traitors' gate and why she had a private execution, and why both of these things were done for reasons which suited Henry VIII!

Places to go to explore Roman Britain

Welcome to Tea Time History Chat Live on the British History channel with me, Philippa Lacey Brewell.

Today I am going to tell you about 5 of my favourite Roman places to visit in Britain outside of London: a legion fortress in Wales, the fourth largest Roman city in Britain, a Palace, a Temple and a luxury Roman villa.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of Roman sites in Britain but if you enjoy today then maybe I can do a follow on episode. For instance I’m not covering Hadrian’s wall in today’s show, despite it being an incredible place, and George R R Martin’s inspiration for The Wall, which appears in the first book ‘A Game of Thrones’ of his famous ‘A song of Fire and Ice’ series, of course subsequently made into the Game of Thrones HBO series.

Or Portchester Castle, a Roman Saxon Shore Fort which is said to be the best preserved north of the Alps and where, in the 12th century a Castle was built within its walls but in the interim Anglo Saxon period it is thought to have been occupied by a high status family.

Or indeed, Chester with its Roman Walls and remains of its amphitheatre in what is still a bustling town with many medieval buildings remaining. There’s also Cirencester, St Albans, Gloucester, the list actually goes on.

There is a link in the names of those places: Chester means a camp of soldiers and is as a suffix to place names in the form of -chester, -caster and -cester, for example Manchester, Lancaster, Gloucester, and when you know that you start to realised how many Roman settlements there were.

Dressing for the Tudor Court

Dressing for the Tudor Court was no simple matter, with rules around who could wear what, the challenge and expense of obtaining fabrics and jewels, and the fine line between being a glittering appendage to the court or a treasonous upstart! Eleri Lynn, Fashion Historian and author of a number of books on Tudor Fashion and Textiles, joined me to talk about the clothes of the Tudors and how they were as central to their world as politics and religion.

Eleri Lynn, a fashion and textiles curator, author and historian, specialising in the Tudor period

She gained her experience as an Assistant Curator within the Furniture, Textiles and Fashion Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum before becoming Curator of the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection at Historic Royal Palaces.

She has appeared on many TV documentaries including BBC2’s ‘Art That Made Us’ and BBC1’s ‘Elizabeth: Fashioning a Monarch’.

Eleri is the author of several monographs: Fashion in Detail: Underwear (V&A Publications, 2010), Tudor Textiles (Yale University Press, 2020), and Tudor Fashion (Yale University Press, 2017) - on which this interview is based.

Eleri has curated several major fashion and textiles exhibitions including Diana: Her Fashion Story (Kensington Palace, 2017) and The Lost Dress of Elizabeth I (Hampton Court Palace, 2019).

Most recently she was Head of Exhibitions at National Museum Wales and is a Trustee of the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace. She is currently working researching and writing a new book on the history of fashion.

In 2012, Jonathan was contacted by Ian Coulson, an Antiques Dealer specialising in beds, who was seeking assistance in identifying the provenance of a bed which he had recently bought at auction, which had been described as 'Victorian'. In this interview Jonathan talks about how he identified the bed as that of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, how it set off an interest in him to discover more lost Tudor treasures and the barriers which prevent many of his findings, including the bed, from being on public display.

How Henry’s crisis of confidence led to the complete dissolution of all religious houses in England and Wales

"Even in 1539, they still don’t believe the end is coming."

For decades we have understood the Dissolution of the Monasteries, which took place in the late 1530's during the reign of Henry VIII, in a short hand, summarised and sanitised version of events. Professor James Clark, in his book 'The Dissolution of the Monasteries. A New History' published by Yale University Press in 2021, looks at how the dissolution unfolded for the ordinary people and exposes the received history and its short hand explanations of the process as way too simple and, in many ways, inaccurate.

Wars of the Roses and The Battle of Tewkesbury

The Battle of Tewkesbury was the last head to head battle between the Yorkists and Lancastrians.

As the sun set on Tewkesbury Abbey on the 4th May 1471, the Lancastrian line had been extinguished. Henry VI's only son and heir was dead, he himself was in captivity in the Tower of London and his wife, Margaret of Anjou, had nothing left to fight for.

Anne Boleyn - May 1536

In May 1536 something no one would have believed possible, happened. A Queen was about to be executed, by beheading, convicted on erroneous charges. Anne Boleyn, who had sat at the May Day Jousts on 1st May was, by the end of the following day, a prisoner in the Tower of London. She would never leave!

Was Henry VIII Infertile?

The final days of Elizabeth I and the Execution of Archbishop Cranmer

Archbishop Cranmer, the architect of the break with Rome and Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon, was executed in this week in history. He was burned at the stake in Oxford and his plight earned him a place in 'Foxe's Book of Martyrs'.

At Christmas 1602, Elizabeth I's godson had been shocked by her appearance. By mid-February she had retreated to her favourite home, Richmond Palace. As thoughts turned to how events may go when the Queen passes, which surely she was soon to do, she was all to aware that people were looking to her successor. Anxiety and melancholy dogged the Queen in her final weeks and after a fraught few days when the Queen refused to rest, she was moved into her bed. She died in the early hours of the 24th March 1603.

Mary, Queen of Scots Letters

55 letters have been deciphered and then identified as those of Mary, Queen of Scots. Over 50,000 words, from Mary, are now available to be read, analysed and contextualised! In this episode I look at the bits of the newly published paper on these letters which most caught my eye.
