My guest on this weeks episode is Matt McGowan from the Save Ardrossan Harbour campaign group. He gives us a bit of background on why the community group had to be setup. We then move on to discuss why this campaign is non political and delve into the importance of getting the harbour upgraded for the new CalMac ferries. There's also a bit of a deep dive on why this should be a national issue and what are some of the things that have went wrong since 2016/17 with regards to getting an agreement in place to get some boots and machinery on the ground in Ardrossan to upgrade what is at the moment a privately owned asset by Peel Group/ Peel Ports. In the week of recording Transport Scotland and the Scottish Government issued a press release to say they were pursuing the potential purchase of the harbour, we chat about some of the implications of that and what the future holds for SAH, the three towns and Arran.

A Woman in Defence: Karina Molloy Talks About The Enemy Within The Irish Army

My guest on this episode is Karina Molloy who served with the Irish military for over thirty years. Karina is a women of many firsts, she was part of the first swathe of female recruits to be enlisted officially in the Irish army as well as the first to attempt to pass selection for the Irish special forces. Unfortunately, her time in the army was plagued by sexual harassment and even more with sexual assaults. Karina talks openly about her career there are even a couple of light hearted moments shared throughout. You'll hear first hand what the logistics were of females first steps in the Irish army alongside subjects such as isolation, mindset & psychology etc. Karina is campaigning to make military's across the world safe places for women to work at without fear of assault. so, that does take up the bulk of this discussion. This podcast sees me chatting with David Walsh who's a Professor of Health Inequalities at Glasgow University. He's also co authored a book with the same title as the podcast.

We talk about the shocking impact of austerity policies on life expectancy and what kind of political decisions have triggered this and some policies that could be changed to improve things. Austerity on its own sounds like any other noun but, when you break down what austerity actually does, the human impact of austerity policies and ideology then, the data and the figures revealed in the book is pretty horrific. Joining us today is Kevin Lindsay from Aslef, he gives us a detailed background of the recent disputes between Aslef members both at a UK wide level then he gives us a detailed insight of things from a more local Scottish perspective. Hear why Kevin see's himself as a baby in the game with his 22 years of trade union organising (Aslef were founded in 1880) Kevins a staunch defender of his members and talks in great detail about why Train drivers deserve a good wage with the critical work they do and the unsociable hours they sometimes have to work on a 24 hour rail service. You'll get a good history of how the railways have operated over the last 30 years or so if you do decide to give this some of your time.

There's also some good discussion about the recent scandal of the Scottish Govt trying to bring back peak rail fares in Scotland. There's also chat about what can be done to modernise the railway fleet, have an integrated ticketing system between bus operators and the rail providers as long as making travel cheaper. There's some good patter as well but, you need to listen in for that.

We start off by hearing about Iains background and how the stress of struggling with undiagnosed dyslexia from school and beyond has contributed towards him thinking outside of the box with regards to his navigation through life both personally and professionally.

He tells us about a fateful encounter he had with Leslee Udwin in 2017 (who at that time was categorised as the second most influential female on the planet behind only Hillary Clinton via the NY Times) This then led to an epiphany in his own words and a journey from there to becoming educated on the biological impact of trauma on the childhood brain. This leads into his lifes philosophy completely changing. Iain now spends a good amount of his time trying to reform the justice system from the inside. Join us for a good conversation about this!

As most will know Tom then makes his way back up to Glasgow with Celtic where he had a great career with one of the obvious highlights being winning the Scottish league in the 97/98 season to stop Rangers in their tracks of winning 10 in a row.

Was a privilege to sit down and talk politics with a heavyweight from Scottish politics. Tommy's obviously a well known socialist and internationalist. There was good humor shared at times as well as more serious topics being discussed from Tommy's segway into Social Work, George Galloway getting elected, the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Europe. Find out about why Tommy's keen to trace some potential mafia links and why he's concerned more about yacht ownership than stopping human beings searching for new and better lives on small boats. There's a great story about the backstory about how he got the first ever private members bill passed in the Scottish Parliament to abolish warrant sales. Inevitably there was a good chat around Scottish independence and why that is unlike other nationalist movements. There's some good stories in there from his time in parliament and he gives us his take on what's going on in Gaza and the war between Ukraine and Russia.

We talked about her early life when there was no real presence of teams for girls in Ayrshire and then move onto her Kenny Milleresque journey to Kilmarnock, Scotland youth teams, Rangers, Celtic and then finally Ayr. A discussion about poverty and play for children in Scotland with Professor John Mckendrick from GCU

John's primary research interests are on poverty (with a particular interest on how this impacts children) and children’s play. He told us about his own research when he was a student on lone parents within Strathclyde. John gave a good background about his work at the University for common good, his early years and how his experiences growing up in Ayrshire sparked a love for the outdoors and the environment. John also shared his knowledge about the importance of safe, scattered outdoor spaces for kids to congregate, explore and play within.

There was a good chat about the aim to reduce the levels of child poverty and inequality within Scotland by 2030. We talked over how poverty is measured, why it's important to do that and other social issues were touched on such as the need for additional social housing. The subject of cars within the environment was a theme and how this has a knock on impact on play and safe spaces. John was also a grade 1 referee within Scotland which has seen him officiate at the top level of the national game so, there was a brief chat about this as well of course.

One for the MMA and wrestling fans out there. Finn is a catch wrestling World champion having recently won the belt down at the Snake Pit in Wigan. This seen him getting invited over to America to train with the legendary Josh Barnett the youngest ever UFC heavyweight champion and catch wrester aficionado. Finns also a BJJ purple belt with lots of talent and a very nice guy to boot. He talks about his early days with wrestling, transitioning to competing at national level with Scotland and on the international stage with Team GB. He talks about weight cutting, briefly on his role coaching wrestling and being available for seminars, he's also a paramedic and talks about how that came about.
