Addy, Britt, Jesse, and Katie all are here after a wild two weeks in F1 saw Lando Norris win a race to really put pressure on Max Verstappen in the race for the world driver's championship, then Norris getting passed from another pole start, slipping behind Oscar Piastri and eventual winner Charles Leclerc, and having to wonder if his window is smaller than it first appeared. Leclerc's win excites us most as Ferrari fans, of course, but are we gearing up for a championship chase with eight races left in the season? Meanwhile, NASCAR heads to the playoffs after wrapping up the regular season, the Mets are flying, the Yankees are pulling a Red Bull, and one of us is already in "season over" territory on a sport that only just began its season, leading to a search for new fandom in another league. Kevin Magnussen also will have time to watch football thanks to his one-race ban.

Infamous enough for smoking that she appeared with a cigarette on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and for her dog who loved pooping on the field at Riverfront Stadium, her true vice – and the source of her downfall – was racism. Schott’s praise for Hitler and use of the N-word are why her legacy remains toxic today, making her the benchmark for terrible sports owners.

Katie is back from Spain, where she got some unexpected help to fight the sun's rays and also saw Max Verstappen's final win before his current slump (finished fifth in one race, still 17 seconds ahead of his teammate despite a crash and penalty), and brings all the details to share with Addy, Britt, and Jesse. Thanks to Verstappen wrecking himself and Lando Norris, we've got a fifth F1 race winner of the season in potential future England soccer manager (or maybe USMNT manager???) George Russell. The Baguettes are still fighting, even though the French Civil War is over, and Ferrari remains adrift for another week. Plus, NASCAR sponsorship news has us Hootin' and maybe even hollerin' as much as during a five-overtime race after a rain delay, and everyone's faves giving way one by one before Joey Logano clinched his playoff spot. And for the record, the Mets scored six runs in the 10th inning of their game in Washington after we finished recording... then gave up four, but four is less than six so they still won. LET'S GO METS BABY!!!

Addy, Britt, and Jesse find out who the headliner was when Max Verstappen raced in a one-season Florida circuit in 2014, proving that sports works in mysterious and comical ways. Nothing is more mysterious and comical than a baseball team being inspired to join the playoff hunt by a fast food character, and of course it's the Gay Grimace Mets who are running rampant and setting a new vibe. Aston Martin could certainly use a vibe shift -- perhaps a first Fernando Alonso win since before Max Verstappen was in the Florida Winter Series? Spiritually closer to Florida, but actually in Iowa, NASCAR shifted to NBC for the second half of the season and we always appreciate a good broadcast -- especially in baseball, where Mets and Giants voices were perfectly equipped to deal with the death of Willie Mays. It's quite a lot of baseball for a racing podcast, but don't worry, football season starts soon enough (and we're saving all the Iowa jokes from Sunday's race until Katie gets back).

Plus, the play-in matchups for the F1 In-Season Tournament that doesn't really exist.

Same Old Celtics

Ace, James, and Jesse are back amid the second round of the NBA playoffs, where the Finals matchup they've envisioned for months is falling apart rapidly -- largely because the Nuggets dropped the first two games of their series against the Timberwolves at home, and looked completely overmatched in the process, not to mention physically fading. Meanwhile, the Celtics are still in a safe enough position to believe that they'll survive the Cavaliers, but that's only because we're now all so used to Boston mixing an outright stinker into every series. With the way the rest of the East looks, including the red-hot but also Icy Hot-slathered Knicks, it still feels like the Celtics are the team to beat. Problem is, they keep showing why they're beatable. That's got James thinking about a team that isn't even in the playoffs, but figures to be a spring fixture again soon enough, the San Antonio Spurs.

Celtics Already Done?

Ace, James, and Jesse all expect that Boston still will advance past Miami, even after the Heat's stunning Game 2 win over the Celtics. But did that game expose the Celtics, and prove that James has been right about them all along? Even if they sweep their way from here to the Finals? Maybe. For the resident Knicks fans, it's just fun to ride the wave of New York's own success, with hating on Boston just a benefit. For the record, the Celtics have lost by double figures on their home court seven times in the last three-plus postseasons. The Celtics have bounced back from losing by 10-plus at home in the playoffs before, but those title runs with significant speed bumps were in 1960 and 1968. We're all over the rest of the playoffs, too, but the person writing the show notes really wants to shine a light on the Celtics here because it's really funny to see this happening again.

It’s never a good thing when Pete Rose is back in the news, and he has been lately because of the alleged theft of $4.5 million from Shohei Ohtani to cover gambling debts. That story has yet to fully unfold. Rose’s has, to the point where the Washington Post ran not one, but two big stories looking back at it… 10 years ago. This year is the 35th anniversary of the death of then-commissioner Bart Giamatti, who banned Rose, even though so much of what happened feels so recent. Nope, it was 1989. It’s just that Rose, who agreed to his own lifetime ban, has never once shut up about it, and he probably never will.

Pittsburgh Drug Trials

In episode 2 of Dugout of History, Chrystal and Colleen dig into the Pittsburgh drug trials, the scandal that many people know because the Pirate Parrot mascot was implicated as a coke dealer, but that had far-reaching impacts across major league baseball, including shaping the sport’s drug policy into the Steroid Era.

For me (producer Jesse, writing the show notes), it’s a very interesting episode because I was a little kid at the time. I remembered Rod Scurry as a Yankee, for instance, and remember him dying young – though I definitely didn’t put it together as an 11-year-old that his death was drug-related. Lonnie Smith wound up having a very interesting second act with Atlanta, leading the National League in on-base percentage in 1989 and hitting three homers in the 1991 World Series before blundering on the basepaths in Game 7. Keith Hernandez, obviously, was and is Keith Hernandez.

So, I knew some of the details for this one, remembered others, and learned plenty for the first time. The story of the Pittsburgh drug trials also echoes through the way baseball has dealt with subsequent scandals, including in the sport’s powers that be making the same mistakes. Thank goodness that’s all history, though, and vice-related scandals involving superstars are… ah, dang it.

Oh, yeah, and South Carolina is still mowing down absolutely everybody in sight, with an average margin of 49.5 points so far in the tournament. Now, who's going to tell Kim about her jacket?

You Brought The Social Team To Australia, But Not A Chassis

Addy, Britt, Jesse, and Katie are over the moon after the Australian Grand Prix and the rare occasion of not only a race not dominated by Max Verstappen, but won by Carlos Sainz in his Ferrari, two weeks after his appendectomy and a few months before he cedes the Scuderia seat to Lewis Hamilton… who was one spot ahead of Verstappen in the running order as Mercedes’ disaster start to the season reached a nadir. We’re glad George Russell is okay after his crash, amused by Lando Norris flipping off a fan, and wondering what Charles Leclerc has to do to get a win for the first time in almost two years. Some stuff does stay the same even when there’s a Max DNF, after all. There's also plenty of drama through F1's midfield (we'll use that term generously) and not so much this week in NASCAR from Circuit of the Americas, which is fine because the European boys delivered so much for us in Australia, and the stock cars are going back home to short tracks fort he next couple of weeks.

This is the first episode that we’re officially calling the Casual Diehard podcast, as we do a light to moderate rebrand. Willets Pen isn’t going anywhere, but it was born as a Mets book project (and still will be one eventually!) and will be our newsletter.

The subway station where the Mets play isn’t a great namesake for a podcast where we talk about all kinds of sports and whatever other tangents we go on. In this episode, for instance, with Britt, Jesse, and special guest Sophie Ross, we’ve got shared sadness for the effective end of the Bengals’ season and Ferrari’s season continuing exactly as it has.
