5 counterintuitive ways I do less and win more

I finally missed publishing a podcast episode yesterday. I broke my streak at 110 episodes. I was in Vegas for business, yet I still woke up early as usual. Unfortunately, my travel mic quality was extremely poor and I decided it was best to wait a day to record.

At first, I was upset. I love my creative process and I don’t want to let you down.

But I realized that sometimes doing less was actually a way we can all win more.

So I took the extra time in the early morning and compiled more notes and ideas for episodes. By being forced to slow down for a day, I actually came out of it feeling like we all won.

That got me thinking about all of the ways I could do less to win more. And so I want to share 5 of the best reasons to do less and win more.

Ok now that we have the 4th of July out of the way, I wanted to bring up that we’re halfway through the year. Just like you I can’t believe how quickly everything seems to be moving. It’s a great time to check back in on the goals you probably set for the year.

How I throw the competition off my scent

I did a podcast episode a couple days ago where I shared how I discovered a way of stealing ultra hot leads from the competition.

It turns out if you track recent follows on Twitter and LinkedIn, you will be shocked by how many sales/marketing people and CEOs follow people after they have a first sales call or in-person meeting. So we would track recent follows and then call on these same people, and usually hear, "Great timing! We’re thinking about this service right now!"

I also mentioned how startups of 8 or less are the easiest and give away the most information. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

So the question then is asking how do you play defense so nobody steals your own company leads?

Don’t expect Amazon to market your Voice Skill

The nice part about running Voice Entrepreneur is I get to talk to so many smart, interesting people every single day. But over the last few weeks, a disturbing trend has emerged.

People tell me they expect Amazon will market their voice skill. They think if the voice skill has enough merit, then Amazon will magically make sure the voice skill gets loads of traffic.

Nobody says it in those exact words. But the subtext is always that they are building voice skills for Amazon’s approval. Like Amazon is a warm, but stern mother or father.

Voice is about to have a social media explosion

As a former business development person at Google and YouTube, I built a ton of the earliest social media deals on the web. I even created the first social media partnership the U.S. government ever signed back when I was dealmaking at YouTube in 2008.

I’m a single mother of 3 and have a day job.

I’m worried that I’ll never finish my voice skill and when I do, it won’t get lots of people. Or at least I won’t know how to get lots of people to use it.

Today I want to talk about how to get filthy rich building voice skills. Thats right! It’s really time to start to build your voice empire. Now is the time to get serious.

As we talked about yesterday, Amazon turned on “Can Fulfill Intent Requests” which essentially allows for the creation of hyperlinks between voice skills. We now have a discovery and way to move around the “voice web” just like you can move between websites on the web. We had Justin Malvin, star product manager on yesterday to talk about the basics— how will it work? what does it mean? How should we think about it?

"I read your blogpost this week about what you learnt from an 8 year old about they way he uses Alexa. Fascinating. I've been playing with a couple of ideas for voice games for kids. The problem is that sometimes, the character in the game dies. I don't want to make them overly sad, but on the other hand, I'm thinking they are used to these game-over scenarios from video games. I talked to Makaio Popp (8 years old) all about his love of Amazon Alexa. Makaio told me what he loves, hates, laughs at with the Alexa. We then talk about some marketing lessons we can learn from the chat with Makaio.

How to start a VOICE startup (in 5 easy steps)

How to start a voice startup (in only a few days):

1) Go look at what users need and want today. I look at the Dashbot rankings for smart, fast ideas. I also look at the Amazon Alexa store.

2) I start talking to people that use Amazon Alexa. I do this through LinkedIn and Facebook. I join groups on both platforms, and I talk to people who love Voice technology and Alexa devices. Find out what they want MOST. Keep asking people over and over what they need and want.

3) I create some basic Facebook ads that advertise exactly what the people in #2 told me they want. I spend almost nothing on ads until I get a little bit of a response.

4) I use a free page builder to build an email signup page so I can ask people for their email address. When you can get 25 people to sign up for the email list you know you have something big.

5) Go to storyline and build your first version. For free.

6) LAUNCH! Keep talking to actual people who need your solution. Keep talking to them over and over.

Note: I didn’t talk about raising money, coding, co-founders, accelerators, wordpress websites, incorporating, logos, or a pitch deck. You don't need ANY of those things right now.

Basic steps:

1) Record something fun on your phone or laptop

2) Use a site like Pippa.io to store your audio files

3) Go to Amazon and create a free developer account

4) Click "create skill" and select "flash brief"

5) Copy and paste your Pippa feed link into your Amazon account

6) Fill out some some basic info on Amazon and click "submit"
