Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus; that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years.

Now while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense.

An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard. Your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.”

Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”

The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple. When he came out, he could not speak to them. They perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute. When the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house. After these days Elizabeth his wife conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying, “Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men.”

In Jerusalem, 30AD, Nadi and his brother, Levi, plan to attack and kill Pontius Pilate but Chloe, the love of Nadi’s life, bumps into Nadi moments before they are to strike. Nadi must choose whether to fight with his brother or join Chloe. He joins Chloe and walks away from Levi. Later that night, in the Garden of Gethsemane, Nadi realizes his friend Jesus is the Messiah, but not the warrior he was praying for. This is the Passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus as recorded in Nadi’s recently discovered journals.

We have now touched on the Old and New Testament and the Psalms. These first ten episodes are to give you a taste of what is to come. There are hundreds of Bible passages to choose from.  If you want your favourite Bible passage read, please, get in touch.

John was asked recently if having classical music in the background while reading from the Bible was a distraction. He replied that these podcasts are for reflection and meditation, they are not part of a church service.

The first reading is The Creation from Genesis chapter one verses 1 to 16. The music is Ave Maria from Rachmaninov’s Vespers.

The second reading is the Ten Plagues from Exodus chapter 4, verses fourteen to twenty nine, chapter 8 verses 1 to 3, then chapter 8 verses 12 to 20. Chapter 9 verses 13 to 19, then chapter 10 verses 3 to 6, then from chapter 10 verses 21 to 23 and finally chapter 11 verses 4 to 6. The music is the Witches Sabbath from Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.

The third reading is the parting of the Red Sea from Exodus chapter 14 verses 15 to 31. The music is the overture from the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart.

The forth reading is Joshua stops the moon from Joshua chapter 10 verses 10 and following. The music for this reading is the Sabre dance from Khachaturians’s Gayenneh.

The fifth reading is David and Goliath from 1st Samuel chapter 17 verses 40 to 54. The music for this is the 2nd movement of Rachmaninov’s second piano concerto.

The sixth reading is the Queen of Sheeba from 1st Kings chapter 10 verses 1 to 13. The music is the arrival of the Queen of Sheeba from Handel’s Solomon.

And finally, the seventh reading is Jonah in the whale from Jonah chapter 2. The music is Der Holle Rache from the Magic Flute by Mozart.

We have nine Psalms to read this time. John has been practicing all week.

This time, John has ordered the Psalms the way he wants to, and not in numerical order.

There may be another episode on the Psalms, or we may go straight onto the Old Testament. Check back in next week to find out.

Psalm one is number 55. The music is Subjects of Khaschei from Stavinsky’s the Firebird. I hadn’t heard this piece of music before.

The second one is Psalm 118. The music is Number 1 allegro from Gounod’s Faust.

The third psalm is number 139. The music for this is the forth movement from Prokofiev’s first symphony.

Number four is psalm 115. The music is Albinoni’s Adagio for strings.

Number five is psalm 101. The music is Rossini’s Cancan.

The sixth psalm is number 19.  John has chosen the first movement of Sousa’s forth symphony for the music.

Number seven is Psalm 30. The music is Chopin’s piano sonata number two, the funeral march.

Number eight is Psalm 24. The music is the prelude from Charpentier’s Te Deum.

And finally, number nine is psalm 28. The music is Queen Mary’s funeral music by Purcell.

I’ve been looking forward to this all week.

There are so many Psalms to choose from and an almost unlimited choice of music, but John has selected his favourite three for this episode.

Then, the Prodigal Son parable from Luke chapter fifteen verses eleven to thirty two. The music is the first movement from John’s first symphony, followed by “Hungary” from the album Compose Yourself. This is one of my favourite parables along with the Good Samaritan.

When I listen to the passages, I imagine myself there at that exact time. What are the smells? What do I see? How am I feeling? If I was the son, how exactly would I be feeling. You should try to do that too.

We continue our journey through the New Testament.

John is going to read four passages tonight.

I asked him how he chooses the music he does. He said it may take a few tries but once he hears the music, the rest comes naturally.

The first reading is the Lord’s Prayer from Matthew chapter six verses seven to fifteen. The music is Lithuania and USA from the album Compose Yourself.

The second is Jesus raising a dead child from Mark chapter five verses twenty one to forty three. The music is Inventor from the album Modern People and the second piece of music is Chile from the album Compose Yourself.

The third is a woman caught in adultery from John chapter eight verses one to eleven. The two tracks are from the album Compose Yourself and are Egypt and Malaysia.

And finally, the resurrection of Lazarus from John chapter eleven verses 1 to forty four. The two tracks are from the album Compose Yourself and are Austria and Greece.

The concept is simple. John reads passages from the Bible over suitable classical music composed and performed by John.

That does sound very simple.

The idea is to reflect on the Bible passage. You could read it for yourself first. Then listen to it being read by John.

The passage should come alive in your mind.

We are going to read the Bible in a year, so, without further a do, let’s make a start.

The first Bible passage is Mark chapter one verses nine to thirteen. The baptism of Jesus. The music is "Simply pray" from Gethsemane.

The next passage is Mark chapter six verses fourteen to twenty nine. The death of John the Baptist. The music is "Argentina" and "Denmark" from the album Compose Yourself, available on all streaming platforms.
