After a shaky fight week and a late-notice catch-weight agreement, we finally got to see Rodtang and Superlek face off in a ONE Championship ring and the fight absolutely delivered! A gore-fest with plenty of excitement, a knockdown, and a variety of superb technique on display, Superlek prevailed by decision, turning away the challenge of the iron-chinned fan favourite Rodtang. But some fans cried robbery after the fight, and some fans seem to think that despite Rodtang's best efforts he was barely in the fight at all. Are either true, or is the truth somewhere in the middle? On this episode, I look to find out!

Talking of bizarre, the big rematch between Mauricio Lara and Leigh Wood brought surprises before the first bell had even rung, and the fight itself played out in a different fashion than many expected!

Episode 44: Leon Edwards wins the trilogy

UFC 289 is in the books and surely Kamaru Usman's time at the upper echelons of MMA is as well? In this episode I look at how Leon answered questions I've had on him FOR YEARS and also take a look at Usman's career from pre-to-post title, injury concerns and the fact he might well have aged out and also lost some of what made him so great in the first place. Not to detract from 'Rocky' Edwards though, who has now cemented himself without a shadow of a doubt as the premier 170lber worldwide.

Plenty more to talk of on the card including the potentially dodgy decision in the absolutely terrific Gaethje-Fiziev fight, but also Marvin Vettori being uninteresting (and Roman Dolidze being unequipped to deal with that) and the a potential clash between rising British stars being scuppered by the hubris of one of the combatants.

Retiring following a second loss to Ryan Bader at Bellator 290 only makes my love for Fedor Emelianenko stronger, as I try to put into words why he's such a titan of mixed martial arts. After that, I turn my attention to two modern champions aiming to etch their name into the same hallowed ground we see Fedor's, as UFC 145lb champ Alexander Volkanovski moves up in weight for arguably his toughest challenge yet (and almost certainly his biggest) as he takes on reigning UFC 155lb champ Islam Makhachev. I give my prediction as to who will win and why, and you can read the excellent piece I mentioned on the grappling dynamics in this fight below:

As the title suggests this episode is covering Muay Thai and kickboxing only, as Daniel Rodriguez took his record to a perfect 38-0 in his second win over the legend Yodwicha on 23rd December, and Rise and Glory pitted some of their best against each others on Jesus' birthday.

Episode 33: Buakaw crossed the line / Takeru goes solo / Andy Cruz escapes / Bivol tames Ramirez

So yeah, pretty stacked episode this week. Did Buakaw cross the line in his 'exhibition' with Yoshihiro Sato? Certainly appears that way. K-1 legend Takeru announced his contract is up with the titans of J-kick, but what does it really mean? Ren Hiramoto has seemingly taken strides in shoring up the holes in his MMA game, and that's a good thing (even though I previously hated the idea!). Andy Cruz has apparently managed to escape Cuba with an eye on turning pro, and I talk about why that's such an exciting prospect for boxing fans. And Dmitry Bivol put on another masterclass, but I'm not betting the mortgage on him just yet.

Speaking of not betting the mortgage, I go into why trying to predict Adesanya-Pereira is a fool's errand (but offer up a prediction anyway)

Episode 32: Kenshiro knocks out Kyoguchi

Combat sports fans have seen plenty of great and important battles take place at the Saitama Super Arena over the years and we can now add another to the list, as a light flyweight unification years in the making finally took place! WBC champ Kenshiro faced off with domestic rival and WBA/Ring champ Hiroto Kyoguchi in a bout as eagerly anticipated among boxing hardcores as any other in recent memory!

The fight itself ended up playing out as relatively one-sided, but there were enough thrills while the action lasted to make it a worthwhile watch as well as a historically significant title unification bout. So listen to me break down just how Kenshiro made it look so easy, what it means for the division as it stands, and what it means for shaking up the historical landscape of the truly terrific 108lb weight class.

Then over to MMA as I discuss why I have absolutely no clue who is going to win in the main event of UFC 280, and then discuss a couple of bouts from note from this past weekends Fight Night card.

It's been a while but it was NOT a hiatus: I've simply been busy providing content for my patrons over at the Combat Chronicles Patreon!

Loads to talk about this week but maybe not what you'd hoped for! First, a new British boxing drugs scandal, followed by news that the best heavyweight in the world is likely to take on a fight absolutely no one is asking for. Then, a look at how Patricio Pitbull diffused a quality operator in Adam Borics and how inspite of being a Bellator stalwart the Brazilian is a true modern great. And then, two mainstays of the Dutch and international combat sports scenes (hopefully) settled their differences once and for all as Alistair Overeem fought Badr Hari in a rubber match at GLORY: Collision 4. As expected (by me at least) the third fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was a damp squib. What does it mean for both men going forward?

On the undercard, boxing phenom 'Bam' Rodriguez seems to be getting flak for his performance against battle-tested Israel Rodriguez. I look into that and explain why I think that's unfair.

On the MMA front, the big attraction this week was Cory 'Sandman' Sandhagen vs. Song Yadong. It lived up to expectations and tells us a lot about both fighters.

Episode 25: Who will Fury fight next? / DAZN boxing round-up / Zuluzinho travesty / UFC's first show in France

First I look at the circus that is Tyson Fury's next fight, as well as going over potential opponents and how interesting I think they are. Then I look at the DAZN card this weekend which was headlined by one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the sport, Juan Francisco Estrada.

Then, MMA showed its arse again as poor ol' Zuluzinho was possibly robbed of a win out in Belarus. And then in their first card on French soil, the UFC put on a mixed bag of an event with enough fights worth talking about to round out the show.

Episode 12: Pitbull reclaims the crown // All Hail Queen Izawa

Weird little episode this week, as I focus on rematches that took place that had similar narratives but vastly different outcomes. Both bouts took place outside the UFC (Bellator & RIZIN) and both featured veteran champs taking on young upstarts that wrecked them first time around. Both of the former champs had more success this time around, but only one was really able to make the necessary adjustments required to win back their title. So listen to me wax lyrical about Patricio Pitbull's unlikely-looking win over A.J McKee, and Combat Chronicles Fighter-of-the-Year for 2021 Seika Izawa's highly-impressive performance against the legendary Ayaka Hamasaki, who like Pitbull also did better second time around (to no avail, ultimately)

Lots to talk about this week about the cage fights (but don't, worry not much from the borderline appalling undercard of UFC 273) as Aljamain Sterling pulled off the best win of his career against one of the most skilled fighters operating today--and his nemesis--Petr Yan, and Khamzat Chimaev showed once and for all he is no joke by taking a big step up in competition against Gilbert Burns. The best pound-for-pound fighter around Alexander Volkanovski also gets a mention.

Over in the boxing ring, Gennady Golovkin won a hard-fought battle with Olympic gold medalist Ryota Murata. Is Triple-G shot? Is the third fight with Canelo Alvarez at best a waste of time and at worst dangerous matchmaking? Am I just being a sad old goat? In the world of mixed martial arts, we had a stinker at 205, an incredible back-and-forth at 155, and a classy 145lb title eliminator. We also got to see Alex Pereira in action again. How is he progressing as he takes up MMA full time?

Episode 7: Taylor - Catterall ROBBERY / More Boxing / Mousasi da GOAT? / Makhachev beats Green

After a week off from regularly scheduled programming Episode 7 is here! Josh Taylor's legacy as one of Britain's great boxers seemed locked on no matter what happened with his trip seven pounds north to welterweight, but now hangs in the balance after a shambolic performance (and even worse decision) in what looked like a routine title defence against British mandatory challenger Jack Catterall. What went wrong for Taylor? Were the scorecards in any way defensible?

Also, a look back at another all-British boxing match, a modern legend suffers a shocking loss, and a mixed martial artist who hinted at retirement beat a notable boxer in a straight boxing match?! Clearly it's silly season in combat sports.

As for MMA a quick look at a routine title defence from Bellator 275, and Islam Makhachev predictably steamrolls Bobby Green at UFC Fight Night (Feb. 26th)

When I finished watching UFC 271 I had no idea I would be recording another episode of 'Right? Or Robbery?' so soon after the first (the inaugural episode is available over at www.patreon.com/combatchronicles by the way)

But after logging onto social media and seeing the MMA Twitter faithful ablaze with their reactions to the official scorecards, it became clear to me that these two great 185lbers deserved a full episode dedicated to the excellent bout they put on and full discussion as to whether the decision rendered was just.

On this weeks episode of Combat Chronicles we take a look at the superb trilogy between newly-minted UFC flyweight champ Deiveson Figueiredo and the much-loved former champ Brandon Moreno. What changed from fight to fight? What did Figueiredo figure out between the terrible loss in fight two and the successful rubber match?

Also, a superb fight took place on the prelims at UFC 270, as Octagon newcomer (and veteran road warrior) Victor Henry took on hipsters favourite Raoni Barcelos. If you haven't watched it yet, pause the podcast and do yourself a favour.
