…and then someone opens a dusty cardboard box and you realise you’re actually just getting started?

This episode begins not in Thailand. Not on WhatsApp.Not in a bar with a man in full Admiral whites.

It begins in a garage.

Specifically, retired detective and criminologist Professor Vince Hurley’s garage.

Inside? Old case files. Notes. Clippings. Things packed away but never quite forgotten. The kind of paperwork that doesn’t shout… it just waits.

And when we start going through those boxes together, something becomes very clear:

Patterns don’t disappear. They just gather dust.

In this episode of The BADmiral, we step back in time. We look at what was known, what was said, what was documented — long before this podcast existed. We explore how experienced investigators think, how instincts form, and why sometimes your gut is simply pattern recognition catching up with you.

What happens after the season airs?

In this episode, Sarah Ferris returns to The BADmiral with new developments and reflections that surfaced once the main investigation was already out in the world.

As more people came forward and new information emerged, this episode explores what becomes visible in the aftermath — why accountability is often elusive, why many people never report what they’ve experienced, and why uncovering a potential con can feel like trying to catch smoke with your hands.

This is not an episode about declaring guilt. It’s about what surfaces once belief collapses, and what the system does — or doesn’t — do next.

With thanks to Alex Turner‑Cohen for her journalistic input and contribution to this episode.

While this episode sits outside the main arc of the season, the conversation isn’t over.

Subscribers will receive additional bonus content, continuing the discussion and expert insight raised throughout The BADmiral.

In this episode, Sarah investigates how IntSAR evolved through three distinct lifespans: its founding as a small charitable company, its transformation under Peter Cowell’s leadership, and its sleek modern relaunch years later. Each version carries the same crest, motto, and mission — but behind the surface lies a changing cast of characters and unanswered questions.

From archived websites and corporate filings to interviews with those once involved, The BADmiral explores how legitimacy can be borrowed, how old structures can hide new intentions, and how the line between purpose and pretense can blur at sea.

In this episode, Sarah traces how Cowell’s public image evolved — from early job titles to later claims of international rank — and examines the psychology behind reinvention. How does a story take hold, and why do so many accomplished people accept it at face value?

As new evidence emerges from emails, websites, and interviews, Sarah starts to see how credibility can be built one carefully placed detail at a time.

The deeper Sarah dives, the murkier the waters become. In this episode, she begins piecing together IntSAR’s shifting history — from early company records to its modern-day reincarnation — uncovering documents that raise questions about what was promised, what was delivered, and what might have been imagined.

As veterans and former insiders recount their experiences, one thing becomes clear: truth can be slippery when wrapped in uniforms, titles, and purpose. With every new discovery, Sarah edges closer to understanding how an organisation claiming to save lives could leave so many people adrift.

A letter marked For Your Eyes Only lands in Sarah’s inbox — and with it, a deeper look into the promises, paperwork, and personalities surrounding IntSAR, the International Sea Air Rescue Service.

This episode uncovers the inner workings of a supposed global humanitarian organisation that aimed to unite nations under one rescue command. But as Sarah follows the trail of official-looking documents, job offers, and private messages, she begins to question: where do the facts end, and the fiction begin?

Through conversations with insiders and veterans who believed in IntSAR’s mission, The BADmiral continues to explore how good people can get swept up in big visions — and why it’s so difficult to spot red flags when you’re already invested.

Introducing 'Watching Two Detectives': A Gripping New Podcast

A new podcast titled 'Watching Two Detectives' is set to launch, hosted by retired New South Wales homicide detectives Scott Rogan and Peter Hogan. Initially conceived to explore old case files each episode, the podcast's direction shifted when they covered the murder of Michael Furlong. This case transformed the first episode into a full season titled 'If Tomorrow Never Comes.' The podcast embodies the emotional journey of the detectives and the victim's son, Luke, who had long awaited closure. Listeners can subscribe and gain early access to the entire season on Apple Podcasts or Patreon.

In the last Episode

For the last six months, Andrew Tonks had been playing a game of chess with my sister Emma and up until the 9th of April 2019, she had no idea that she was playing it, let alone that Andrew was almost at checkmate.

In the previous episodes, unbeknownst to Andrew, Emma had discovered his real identity. Fight or flight kicked in ..... Emma chose to fight.

She had swung into action to recover the money that had been transferred into his account only the day before. However, to have any chance of retrieving the money she couldn't let on that she knew his true identity. And so operation "Bank Transfer" swung into action.

One swipe to the right. One small, seemingly insignificant flick of the index finger.....

Meet my sister, Emma as she takes us back to the fateful day when she swiped right on the profile of Andrew Thomson.

He's charming, charismatic, successful and empathetic, everything you look for in a life partner, right?

He seemed like the perfect date but by date four the cracks were starting to appear. And they would be the first of many...

Dr Sophie Muir, Clinical Psychologist joins us, shining a retrospective light on Emma's story and highlighting the red flags along the way
