Using Client Work for Content Ideas

For my first ever guest interview, I chatted to equine photographer Martha Lily about her own business journey which started aged 15! I took so much away from this interview, including:

How to set boundaries and limitations when working with clients
Putting yourself in your clients shoes to help with content creation
Not having a routine can be a blessing
Having the mentality of 'done is better than perfect' will ease the risk of burnout (and still lead to an award!!)

My Journey To Becoming a Full Time Artist

Everyone's journey is different and mine from art student to full time artist didn't go the way you may think it did. I have gone completely full circle and landed back into being an artist, but it took various turns and bumps in the road to get here. Along the way I studied Graphic Design, dabbled in Interior Design and up-cycling furniture, nearly started a wedding stationery business but landed in teaching. From then on, I made it my mission to run my own art business and this journey is what I talk about in this episode.

The “Always Working” Mindset in the Art Business

My brain is constantly lying to me. Ever since I quit my job, it has been telling me that 'if I'm not working, I'm not earning' and I know that this is a toxic mindset which has to change.

In this episode, I let Chat GPT be my therapist and discuss how I can shift from this mindset. I also discuss reframing what passive income means in terms of running a solo business and set actionable steps that you can do today to stop yourself from feeling like you should always be working.

I hope this episode can help people if you're feeling stuck in this mindset too.

Managing Finances in Your Art Business

Do you hate the maths side of your business? I did too, but keeping on top of your finances is really important especially when you've quit your part time job and are doing your business full time. In this episode I touch on a bit of money mindset, having a sexy cash flow forecast and I finish off with a bit of advice about submitting your UK cash basis tax return. I want you to feel empowered that you can do your accounts independently like I (sort of) can now, but if you need any professional advice then please seek the advice of a qualified accountant.

Planning for the Unexpected in Your Art Business

Last week I had a real dose of reality when my daughter became unwell and as a result found myself scrabbling for ways to ensure my business kept running whilst I was solo parenting a poorly child. In this shorter episode I discuss 5 systems I have now put in place for when the unexpected happens if you're running a business on your own.
