Interview: Reg Barnett

Reg "Reggie" Barnett enjoyed a long and distinguished cycling career between 1965 and 1977, turning professional after. A six-time national sprint champion, he turned professional after competing for Great Britain in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. He went on to race domestically for teams including Holdsworth‑ Campagnolo, Falcon, TI‑Raleigh, and later his own Barnett‑Edwards‑Shimano squad.

In this candid interview, Reg chats to Chris Sidwells about racing in the 1960s and 70s.

Mama Mia! Milan-San Remo has not disappointed, from Pogi’s Poggio power to Cipressa carnage to a whole lotta Lotte doubters made schtum and all of it leaving us almost equally so. This is hardly ideal considering there’s an hour of podcast time to kill so we talk about some other stuff too. What did we learn from Tirreno and Paris-Nice? No bull with Isaac Del Toro, that’s for sure (oh, come on, everyone else has used it) but Visma-Lease-a-Bike seemingly have no shortage of moaning as well as a future title sponsor. We look ahead to more Flanders racing and also discover that Calalunya could be a bigger deal than we at first thought this season. All this plus culturally-insensitive climbs and news from Simpson-Nouvelles’ 2026 home debut at the ANEXO/CAMS Cicle Classic.

Yes, it’s that “careful what you wish for” time of the season when All The Racing happens at once and Gary has his annual meltdown. It’s a bumper show from the team so channel your inner Paul Seixas and try to hang in with us!

📸 Megan Guarnier led home a Boels-Dolmans 1-2 in the inaugural Strade Bianche Donne in 2015, thus beginning a remarkable record in this race for the team that in 2020 would become SD Worx. Their riders have won no fewer than 7 of the 11 editions of the race and 3 of those started in Siena this year.

Interview: Clive Phillips - No One Rides Alone

Can someone with Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN) ride the route of the Tour de France? That’s what Clive Phillips and a team of fellow veterans set out to discover during the Tour de MMN 2025. Following the 1955 Tour de France route, the team set out to see if they could follow in the wheel tracks of the very first British Tour de France team.

Clive sat down with Chris Sidwells this week to talk about the team’s experiences on the road and about the new documentary charting their progress, No One Rides Alone.

Interview: Beth Duryea - Canyon//SRAM at 10

Hard to believe, but it’s now ten years since the bright, unmistakable colours of Team Canyon//SRAM burst onto the Women’s WorldTour. Since then, they’ve stacked up more than ninety wins, a world title in the team time trial, over thirty national championships, six Grand Tour stage victories, and - of course - that incredible Tour de France Femmes win in 2024.

As they prepared for this season’s traditional Openingsweekend, Canyon//SRAM zondacrypto’s Marketing and Communications and Sports Director, Beth Duryea spoke to Gary from the team’s training camp in Spain to look back at the first ten years of one of pro cycling’s biggest - and most vibrant - teams.

The garlic bread and olives of Australia and the Middle East are done and the main course of single-day racing in northern Europe is about to be served. Chris, David and Gary look ahead to Openingsweekend and the Spring Classics in general.

📸 The single-day race first known as Omloop Van Vlaanderen was first held in 1945, becoming the somewhat more familiar Het Volk two years later before adopting its current guise as Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in 2009. The 1947 edition was won by the man shown here, Albert Sercu, pictured after winning that year’s Dwars door België (Dwars door Vlaanderen today), just a week earlier. If you think the family name sounds familiar then you’d be right. Albert’s son who was 2 years old when the photo was taken would go on to dominate the six-day track scene, as well as being a multiple Giro and Tour stage winner. His name? Patrick, of course. The pros might now be returning to their training regimes but there’s no off-season for the Feed Zone. Obviously there’s plenty of off-topic but in our more lucid moments we talk about the new American pro team run by George Hincapie and ask whether we should let bygones be bygones or is is “once a doper, always a doper”? We also look forward to seeing Africa’s first UCI women’s team take to the stage in 2026, plus there’s other new team chat, World Cup cyclocross and we raise a glass to pro cycling’s latest newly-weds. Just not as big a glass as Fernando Gaviria apparently does tho’. The new Feed Zone: enjoy responsibly.

📸 30 January 1966: the familar sight of Jacques Anquetil and Raymond Poulidor going head to head, but in a most unfamiliar setting at the Fontenay sous Bois cyclocross. The race itself was quite remarkable and not just for having two Tour de France legends competing. First run in 1961, Fontenay sous Bois, near Paris, was an "American-style" ‘cross race with riders competing in pairs, each riding alternate laps. Each team was made up of a cyclocross specialist and a routier, or all-rounder. Lord have mercy! It’s the vice episode! Drugs are back, tell a friend. Or at least biological passport anomalies are back. Is illegal betting the next bad thing for pro cycling? We wouldn’t bet against it (badoom-tsh!). Plus six-day racing, Euro cyclocross and recommendations to generally make your life better.

📸 The end of the road season historically meant the end of regular earnings for a few months, so many riders headed to the velodrome and the lucrative six-day circuit. Patrick Sercu was the greatest six-day rider of all time, winning no fewer than 88 times in a track career that spanned 3 decades and saw him amass over 1000 victories on the boards. These also included an Olympic gold in Tokyo in 1964 and 2 professional World Championships in 1967 and 1969. Sercu was no slouch on the road either, winning 6 Tour de France stages (including the Green Jersey in 1974) and 13 stage wins in the Giro d’Italia. Sans or Avec Zwift? That is the question. Chris, David and Gary are already looking forward to next July and August after the routes of both Tours de France are announced. Ventoux, Col d’Eze, Montjuic and Le Markstein are but some of the names whetting the collective appetite with only 8 months until both Grand Departs.

The team also look back at the World Track Championships that concluded at the weekend in Santiago, with varying successes for their respective nations, and look even further back to Eddy Merckx’s legendary Hour in Mexico City. Plus ‘cross is back and just what is it with the Brits and hill climbing? (We’re not sure either.)

📸 This past week saw the glitzy presentation of the routes of the 2026 Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. But the race wasn’t always announced with such razzmatazz and it wasn’t until Jean Marie LeBlanc’s stewardship of the race in the 1990s that each year’s route was announced with anything more than a press conference. In other news, we begin the campaign for Remco Evenepoel’s assault on the Hour Record, Quinn Simmons impresses us once again, there is no ‘you’ in team according to the Dutch women’s gravel squad and - speaking of squads - just what is the link between Eddy Merckx and Scotland’s 1978 World Cup football squad?

Back after an indecently long hiatus, the team regroups to catch up on all things bike racing, with some geopolitics, genocide and sporting boycotts thrown in for good measure.

Along the way, we salute some newly-crowned TT World Champions and welcome women’s pro racing back to the Land of the Free.

Photo: Elite racing returned to the USA this weekend with the third edition of the Baltimore Cycling Classic and the inaugural women’s edition, but the Land of the Free hasn’t always been so sparsely served by international pro racing. The Tour du Pont (known as the Tour de Trump for its first 2 editions) had varied fortunes during its 8-years on the UCI calendar, not least down to a May slot which clashed with the Giro d’Italia.

Dali! Hemingway! Picasso! Er, Elton John! Things get surreal as the Vuelta a Espana heads to Salvador Dali country, and little - if any - of it is related to the racing of bicycles. Doncaster celebrates a Grand Tour victory, presumably while Visma Lease-a-Bike were too busy filling in the insurance paperwork after their entire fleet of race bikes evaporated so we wonder just how hard can it be to fit a decent bike lock. Almost as hard as fitting a GPS tracking device in Romandie, it would appear.

Forgotten Yellow

Greg Lemond’s first Tour de France victories are writ large in the history of the race; his duel to the (almost) bitter end with team mate Bernard Hinault in 1986 and then snatching the Yellow Jersey from Laurent Fignon by a mere eight seconds 3 years later.

Twelve months on from that momentous, historic afternoon on the Champs Elysees, Greg Lemond won his third Tour de France and in doing so joined an exclusive club alongside Philippe Thys, Louison Bobet, Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault.

Gary Fairley looks back at an edition of cycling’s greatest race that passes almost unnoticed in the shadow of Lemond’s other 2 wins.

Stunned by actually calling the second week’s play correctly, the team are both full of admiration for the Rumena Majica and just a little bit full of themselves. Collective back-slapping aside, Chris, David and Gary try to remember the last 5 stages while simultaneously keeping one eye on the Tour's upcoming final week. Whither Remco Evenepoel? Whither Jonas Vingegaard? And should pro cyclists have a 15 minute time-out between finishing a stage and speaking to the media? Lidl-Trek probably think so!

Interview: Richard Oakes

Richard Oakes was a successful junior racer before pursuing a high-flying business career. He returned to top-level competition in 2019 in a personal quest to see how fast he could go. In the course of doing so, he has won masters titles on the track at national and world level and in 2023, at the age of 54, set a new Masters Hour World Record.

In 2025 he published The Equation, co-written with our very own Chris Sidwells. Richard sat down with Chris recently to talk about the book which isn’t so much a memoir but a manifesto you build for your life.

From the Archives - Barry Hoban: My First Tour

In April this year, the world of cycling lost a giant and the Cycling Legends family lost an uncle, a friend and an inspiration when legendary British racer Barry Hoban passed away at the age of 85.

Barry rode no fewer than 12 Tours de France between 1964 and 1978. He would go on to win 8 stages along the way, setting a British record that would stand until Mark Cavendish surpassed that total in 2009

In 2022 Chris Sidwells sat down with Barry to record a series of chats about his first experiences of riding cycling’s iconic races.

In this episode Barry talks to Chris about riding his first Tour de France, in support of no lesser name than the great Raymond Poulidor in 1964. That year’s race would be eventful for both riders, but I’ll let Barry tell you about that.

Interview - Clive Phillips, Making the Most of Now

Clive Phillips is a former British Army Officer who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

In late 2019 Clive was diagnosed with Multifocal Motor Neuropathy an ultra-rare neurological condition affecting motor function in the peripheral nerves. After starting regular treatment that keeps the worst symptoms temporarily at bay Clive was determined to use his skills and passion for adventure to take advantage of raise awareness of MMN and funds for research in to the condition and founded the Making the Most of Now project.

In May 2025, Clive and a team of fellow British military veterans set off to ride 3200km around France, following in the wheel tracks of the first British team to enter the Tour de France in 1955. Chris Sidwells caught up with Clive during a rest day in Avignon to talk about the ride and MMN.

From the Archives - Barry Hoban: My First Flanders

In April this year, legendary British racer Barry Hoban passed away at the age of 85. The world of cycling lost a giant and the Cycling Legends family lost an uncle, a friend and an inspiration.

During his career Barry won 8 stages of the Tour de France - a British record that stood from 1975 until the arrival or a certain Mark Cavendish 2 decades later. He also won 2 stages of the Vuelta a Espana and remains - in 2025 - the only British winner of the Gent Wevelgem.

In 2022 Chris Sidwells sat down with Barry to record a series of chats about his first experiences of riding iconic races like Paris-Roubaix, the Tour of Flanders and the Tour de France.

In this episode Barry talks to Chris about riding his first Ronde Van Vlaanderen - the Tour of Flanders - in 1966.

“What would Barry do?” is our new mantra at Feed Zone Towers, although for starters he’d probably have remembered Lorena Wiebes’ name and who wrote ‘Jerusalem’. In between bouts of amnesia, we look back at an intriguing first week of the Giro d’Italia, pick out highlights from the Vuelta Feminina and Itzulia Women and fly off at tangents along the way. Buckle up!

Hamish Graham, Sixty/8

In our latest interview show, Chris talks to a young entrepreneur called Hamish Graham. Hamish has taken over the reins of, not just a cycling holiday company, but the first ever cycling holiday company. The business that in the 1960s founded Majorca as a cycling holiday destination and spawned a tourist industry. That earned its creator, Yorkshireman Doug Petty the Majorcan equivalent of a knighthood.

The business is now called Sixty/8 (sixty8.cc), and Hamish has made it his own, offering packages in Majorca and Girona, and bespoke holidays in other iconic European destinations. In fact wherever you want to cycles, sixty8.cc can make it happen. Hamish is a very experienced racer, who although he got a place in a famous Belgian Kermesse team by at first being mistaken for someone else, made his mark in this tough Belgian school of racing, as well as elsewhere in Europe.

Now he's trying his hand at endurance cycling, having just recently made his debut in the Dales Divide, a 600-kilometre mostly off-road bike-packing race from the Lancashire coast, across the Dales and North Yorkshire National Parks to the Yorkshire coast, and back again. As a fitting touch Hamish took some of Doug Petty's ashes with him for inspiration. Petty was Hamish's step-dad.

Steve Lovelace

In 1982, Steve Lovelace nearly died while chopping firewood with a friend in a remote field near his home in Wagoner, Oklahoma. Pinned to the ground and crushed by the weight of a tree slab, it took two hours for his friend and a local farmer to extricate him with a chainsaw. When he eventually arrived at hospital, doctors were unsure as to whether he’d live. A little over 3 years later, he became only the second disabled athlete to complete an Olympic-distance triathlon.

Today, after series of other health setbacks, Steve continues to compete as a para-triathlete and is indeed a true Cycling Legend.

From the Archives: Theo de Rooij

Theo de Rooij won 14 races in a professional career that spanned the decade from 1980 to 1990. Having ridden with the Panasonic team between 1984-1990, he then became a DS on the team for 4 seasons before joining Rabobank in 1996. He resigned from the Dutch team at the end of 2007.

Theo spoke to Chris Sidwells in 2023 about his career, riding behind the Iron Curtain and riding under – and then working for - the legendary Peter Post. He also found time to recreate his famous interview from the finish of the 1985 Paris-Roubaix!

Andy Hampsten is known to millions of cycling fans for THAT image taken as he attacked in Arctic conditions on the Gavia Pass on his way to take the Maglia Rosa during the 1988 Giro d’Italia,. He would then go on to become, so far, the only US rider to win the Italian Grand Tour.

In a show first aired exclusively for premium subscribers in January 2023, Andy talks Chris through some of the highlights of racing career, from riding as a rookie for Bernard Hinault to winning on l’Alpe d’Huez in 1992, and everything else in between.
