In this episode Mariana interviewed Dr. Kulnaree Sueroj, who has recently graduated with a PhD from the School of Arts and Creative Technologies at the University of York. Her thesis is titled Strategies for Audio Describing Gestures and Facial Expressions for Visually Impaired Thai Television Audiences. Kulnaree started working as an audio describer and AD researcher after joining a pioneering team in 2012 to carry out Thailand's first audio description pilot project for television programmes. Now she works as Associate Dean for Research and Creative Works at the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication, Thammasat University, Thailand. In addition, she collaborates with several AD stakeholders in Thailand and teaches disability and the media modules to graduate and undergraduate students in her faculty.

In this episode we are joined by Joseph Inman, a film director working in Cornwall. Part of the film collective Bear Behind You, he makes both fiction and documentaries with a focus on community participation and coastal storytelling. Their last film, Spines, was the first BFI network funded film to be written, directed and star on autistic person. Joe collaborated with the Enhancing Audio Description team in integrating EAD methods that is Enhanced Audio Description to Spines. By this, we mean the integration of an alternative to audio description in which sound design is used as a vehicle for accessibility by integrating sound effects, sound specialization and first person description. EAD Team Introduction

Welcome to our new podcast called DARCI, which is for Disability, Accessibility and Representation in the Creative Industries. Our Enhancing Audio Description (EAD) project aims to improve the accessibility of films and television shows for visually impaired audiences. The project proposes new techniques that go beyond traditional practices by incorporating sound effects, sound spatialisation, and first-person narration. The project integrates these techniques into the entire production workflow and involves visually impaired audiences in the design process. We also seek to create guidelines for incorporating these methods into professional broadcasting pipelines and filmmaking workflows. Ultimately, the project aims to provide inclusive film and television experiences. Through this new podcast, our mission is to shed light on work in the fields of disability and accessibility, in particular in relation to the arts and that aim to create a more inclusive society. From theories to practical methods, we'll dive into the realm of accessibility and explore how these methods can impact various aspects of our lives. Accessibility is at the heart of our research, and throughout this new podcast series, we'll explore how others are working towards greater inclusion as well. We'll discuss theories, methodologies, and innovative approaches addressing the challenges faced by disabled people. But before we dive into other people's work, let's start by introducing our own work. In this first episode, members of our team will introduce themselves and the work they do.
