The NEW Monkees

At their 30th Anniversary party, the NEW Monkees re-unite on Deep Dish Radio to tell their origin story and their hard lesson on what NOT to do in Hollywood. I love these guys and I'm proud to call them my friends.

The 20th anniversary of The Monkees in 1986 generated enough interest that New Monkees was conceived later that year, and launched the following year. The show, a remake of "The Monkees", was produced by Columbia Pictures Televisionand distributed by Coca-Cola Telecommunications (both are now Sony Pictures Television). Straybert Productions, headed by Steve Blauner (a former partner of original Monkees producers Robert Rafelson and Bert Schneider), served as the project's producers.

The group's members were Jared Chandler (guitar and vocals), Dino Kovas (drums and vocals), Marty Ross (bass and vocals), and Larry Saltis (lead guitar and vocals). As it had been with the original Monkees, each had to pass a grueling set of auditions. Unlike the previous series, however, musical ability was a key factor in the selection process. Ross, a multi-instrumentalist, had earlier been signed to CBS Records, with his former band The Wigs.

Kathy Coleman: Holly from TV's Land of the Lost

Kathy Coleman is probably best known as "Holly Marshall" on Land of the Lost (1974), a show which first ran on Saturday mornings on NBC from September 1974 to December 1976. Her straight bangs and braids, along with her red and white checked shirt and corduroys became her trademark. Holly was the first love for many who grew up watching the show. She married at age 18 and had two sons. She worked on her father-in-laws dairy farm in Fallon, Nevada with her husband for several years before they divorced around 1987, after which she moved back to the Los Angeles area.

The Charlton Comic Group, part of Capital Distributing Company (CDC), was notable for printing music and pop culture magazines such as “Song Hits”, “Hit Parader” “Tiger Beat”, and “Hustler” alongside a list of comic book titles spanning the genres of horror, westerns, romance, comedy, adventure, action, war and superheroes.Unlike its rivals Marvel and DC, Charlton's comic book line of printing was given little to no managerial oversight. “Theydidn’t care much about what was coming off the presses. Kathy Garver and "Surviving Cissy"

Kathy Garver was born in Long Beach, California Her break-through performance came as one of the young slaves in The Ten CommandmentsShe is most well known for starring as the teenage niece of Uncle Bill Davis, Cissy Davis on Family Affair (1966). The show was nominated for Emmys in various categories during its five year run.Kathy was in born in Long Beach, California to Hayes and Rosemary Garver, joining her sister, Beverly, and brothers, Hayes, Jr. and Lance. During Ms. Garver's teenage years, Kathy added radio and stage to her burgeoning film and television career.Ms. Garver was a freshman majoring in speech at UCLA when she was tested for a television series entitled Family Affair (1966). Kathy, deemed "perfect" to star as "Cissy", with Brian Keith as "Uncle Bill" and Sebastian Cabot as "Mr. French", performed for five years in one of the warmest and most enduring series of the 1960s and 70s. The show continues to be popular today through the release of Family Affair's all five seasons on DVD, pleasing old and new audiences world wide - a true classic.After "Family Affair", Kathy starred in an Israeli musical stage version of the TV series, having to learn Hebrew, phonetically, for her role. Later, she continued her dramatic studies at London's prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she portrayed "Juliet" in "Romeo and Juliet". Singer-songwriter and guitarist Raul Midón has earned renown as one of music's most distinctive and searching voices. He is "a one-man band who turns a guitar into an orchestra and his voice into a chorus," according to The New York Times. Midón has collaborated with such heroes as Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder, along with contributing to recordings by Jason Mraz, Queen Latifah and Snoop Dogg and the soundtrack to Spike Lee's She Hate Me. The New Mexico native, blind since birth, has released seven albums since 1999, including the hit studio productions State of Mind (Manhattan/EMI, 2005), A World Within a World (Manhattan/EMI, 2007) and Synthesis (Decca/Universal, 2009). Midón's most recent release is the captivating CD/DVD Invisible Chains – Live from NYC. Attuned listeners can hear the inspirations of Donny Hathaway and Richie Havens in his work, as well as Sting and Paul Simon. But Midón's questing musicality makes him, as the Huffington Post put it, "a free man beyond category."
