A magnitude 9 earthquake would strike the island nation, bringing with it tsunami of up to 133 feet in height and washing away entire towns. These very same waves would over wash the protective barriers at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant and would lead to the eventual meltdown and release of radioactive material into the environment.

Episode 62 - The Bhopal Disaster

This week, we're going to take another look at the Bhopal Industrial Accident. This disaster is regarded as the worst environmental disaster in recorded history. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, a toxic cloud of Methyl Isocyanate would kill over 3,000 and that number would only continue to skyrocket as the hours passed into days, weeks, and months. In total, it is estimated that nearly 30,000 were killed as a result, and over 500,000 suffered injuries, some lifelong as a result of this disaster.

The Ukraine War - One Year Later

Well, we've reached a startling milestone in the war within Ukraine - we've officially reached the one year mark. This episode covers some key figures such as deaths, injuries, and infrastructure destruction. This war has become one of the largest humanitarian disasters that the world is currently facing today. The war has created a refugee crisis that has resulted in the mass exodus of over 8 million being forced from their homes. Total deaths are estimated to have reached somewhere near 300,000 total between both Russia and Ukraine with Russia suffering the latter due to poor planning and an overall lack of strategic planning. Episode 26 - The Flint Water Crisis

This week, we discuss exactly what sheer negligence causes when it comes to cutting corners. The Flint Water Crisis is a prime example of what happens when those in charge are unable to adequately do their jobs. After repeated attempts to secure clean drinking water for the residents of Flint, reports of mysterious illnesses began flooding, coupled with dirty water, and a Legionnaire's disease outbreak that would claim the lives of 14 and ultimately infect 80.

On this episode of Destination Disaster, we discuss the Libby, Montana vermiculite mining operation that has left nearly 700 dead following asbestos exposure and the subsequent health affects such as cancers, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. The Environmental Protection Agency has been working to clean and ensure the safety of Libby, Montana since 2000 and officially announced a Public Health Emergency in 2009. Millions have been spent to clean and remove contaminated soil from the city and ensure future generations don't suffer from their early counterparts.

Episode 21 - The South Fork Dam Failure!

Welcome back! This week we are discussing the South Fork Dam Failure and subsequent flooding of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. At the time of this disaster, it was the deadliest with over 2,000 lives lost. Damage in some areas was total with the only thing left being bedrock. This disaster spurred change and led to the creation of the American Red Cross, now one of the largest multi-national volunteer disaster response agencies in the world.

For decades, minority communities have been forced to face the brunt of disaster impacts with little to no assistance from the agencies that all of us rely on for emergency assistance. Disasters of the past and future will continue to affect minority communities far more than richer communities and will be expected to recover with little to no outside assistance.
