BONUS: Interview With Star Wars Author Laura Pohl

We interviewed an author who wrote a Star Wars short story! Laura Pohl is the author of "Trooper Trouble" in the anthology series "From a Certain Point of View." Her story is featured in the Return of the Jedi book. It tells the story of a stormtrooper tasked with standing in the hanger of the Death Star as important members of the Empire visit the new battle station. Working for the Empire comes with some problems: the working hours are long, the coworkers are difficult to get along with, no one is training them to use blasters, the paychecks have all been delayed, and there isn't any caf in the breakroom. It's a fun story that sheds some light on one of the largest and most unappreciated workforces in the Empire.

We had so much fun talking with Laura about her short story and what it was like being able to publish a story in the Star Wars universe. We hope that you enjoy our conversation!

Pana finally reaches one of the world devastating weapons left over from The Cataclysm, and meets up with an old friend. We talk about finales: what makes a good one, what we want to see, what we don't want to see. To introduce the episode, we talk about the short show, Over the Garden Wall, created by Patrick McHale.

Episode κ: Maul and the Restlessness of Hate

Darth Maul was a fan favorite when he appeared in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Even after his apparent death, he returned to life in the animated show, Star Wars the Clone Wars, only to keep fighting his old enemies. Eventually, in Star Wars Rebels, the character dies for what may be the final time, exhausted, in the arms of Obi-Wan Kenobi. That scene has stood out to Peter for a while. They've heard various takes on the matter, and now offer their own interpretation of what occurred and what it teaches us.

We discuss how their dynamic has changed, and connect their story to that of Catra and Adora's in the stellar TV show "She-ra and the Princesses of Power" by ND Stevenson.

Peter had the incredible opportunity to visit Guayaquil Ecuador as part of a medical mission. While they were there, they visited a place called Las Peñas (the steps). It reminded them of a world they've been working on developing for the last eight years. They talk about how for them, imagining settings and characters can be a struggle, and that watching the world around them helps to creatively define the spaces they write about.

Welcome to the first episode of Determination, Deliberation, and Dragons, a podcast in which Izzy (she/her) and Peter (they/them) talk about various aspects of creative writing while workshopping their own stories. Our goal is to improve as writers and to share some helpful tips with you along the way. In this episode, Izzy and Peter introduce themselves, and talk about what makes a good introduction to a story while discussing the opening chapter in a series that Peter is currently working on involving dragons, friendship, and possible hypothermia.
