What does the reversal of Roe v Wade mean for Black Women?

The fallout from the US Supreme Court ruling last month that overturned Roe vs Wade, a decision that had guaranteed safe, legal abortions in America since 1973, is being felt across the country, particularly Black women.

This week, law professor, Carliss Chatman joins Leanne to discuss the impact of the reversal of Roe v Wade. Carliss explains what the reversal means from a legal perspective and describes it as a tool of power that white men wield over women's bodies.

As the discussion continues, they explore the domino effect of the reversal on access to contraception and LGBTQ+ rights, as well as global implications for women's rights in other countries.

Finally, Carliss offers midwifery as a key consideration in what what we can do to negate the devastating impact of the overturning of Roe v. Wade

Queens Of Sheba and Racist Nightclub Culture

In 2015, the London nightclub Dstrkt was accused of having a racist door policy. It sparked a conversation around high end clubs and their attitudes towards women of colour; particularly dark-skinned Black women. Playwright @TheJessHagan was inspired, and put together ‘Queens Of Sheba’ - which tells the story of four Black girlfriends and their different experiences with dating, clubbing and self-esteem. Jessica joins our girl Roshan to chat about colourism, Black aunties and nightclub culture.

Mental Health of Young Black Girls with Ebinehita Iyere

Before you're a black woman you're a black girl and it's so important that you don't forget the young black girl inside of you and let her come out every now and again. This week in light of mental health awareness week, a very inspiration Dope Black Women joins the show to discuss mental well being in black girls.

Ebinehita Iyere is the founder of Milk and Honey which is a female led expressive safe space that allows black girls to feel empowered and heal from their experiences. Together, the group discuss the importance of teaching our black girls how to feel their emotions rather than telling them that they have to be strong, the adultification of black girls, how we deal with grief in the black community and the benefits of therapy and the first steps you can take if you decide that therapy is something that you want to pursue.

Being A Black Adult Carer with Kemi Forbes

In the black community, family is everything and when a relative gets ill, it is expected that the family members care for that person. However the concept of being a young carer is one that is not very familiar within our community.

In this episode, the Dope Black Women are joined by their very first guest, Kemi Forbes. Kemi works for a charity that supports young carers and also cared for her Mother for 10 years. Together they discuss the challenges of being a young carer, and the sacrifices they made, how they balance being a carer with their career and personal life and the importance and value of family.

More young black people are carers than they even realize, so in this episode we also discuss what resources you can access if you do find that you are a young carer. The best place to start is seeking out support from your local authority.

'Can I touch your hair?' 'Oh sorry, wrong person.' 'Omg, you're so articulate.' We spend so much of our time at work, and unfortunately, it's not always a safe environment and these are some of the most common microaggression we, as black women have to face in the working world.

In this week's episode, Leanne, Liv and Shan discuss bringing their whole selves to work, their experiences of microaggressions, and most importantly how they deal with difficult situations with colleagues. On this week's episode, Leanne, Liv and Shan discuss the unwritten rules of girl code, what girl code actually means to them and whether there are any times where it is acceptable to cross the line.

In this week's Dope Black chat, the ladies discuss the recent controversy in the Mummy Blogger community between Clemmie Hooper, Kelechi and Candice Brathwaithe. It came out the other week that Clemmie had been trolling fellow Mummy bloggers and leaving racist abuse on Candice's page. As a result of Kelechi calling this out, her Instagram account was taken down. To deal with bullies Clemmie became a bully and silenced black women in the process. Together the women discuss this issue, what consequences they think Clemmie should face and what more platforms like Instagram should be doing instead of silencing black voices.
