January is a tough month for us all to navigate - but todays guest is the perfect example of determination, steely resolve and an unwillingness to give into adversity. Billy Schwer was a hugely popualar fighter who hailed from Luton and whos dad emigrated to Newmarket as an Irish featherweight champion and with hopes of mecoming a jockey. He settled in Luton and introdiced his 9 year old son to boxing - the first big introduction of his life, the second was to a man who became his coach, mentor and confidant for a pro career which saw him become British, Commonwealth, European AND World Lightweight champion. It wasn’t all plain sailing though and Billy tells us about some of the bumps and potholes he hit along that road.

Hurricane in Brooklyn Hogan Charlo to the Rowdy in Saudi Anthony Joshua Andy Ruiz Preview

Been a busy week for the podcast with a serious international feel. Having opened with the historical clash of Fury/Whilder we round out a memorable year by previewing yet another barn burning weekends fights.

First up Al speaks with Nick Nunan from deep inside camp Hogan in Brooklyn. We get the feedback on the strange behaviour of Charlo at the presser, on how Dennis is looking,feeling and moving and what his last few hours will entail as we count down the hours to the weigh in and subsequent fight.

Not finished there though Al then speaks with Belfast man and resident in the Emirates for the last number of years Aaron Bickerstaff. Aaron is a former boxer himself and was largely responsible for the Irish team travelling and competing in the HUGELY successful Sovereign Boxing Championship last weekend. Aaron talks about the growth of boxing in the region, the likely impact of the upcoming clash of Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz and the future for boxing in the region.

And to close out we’ll look at the other Irish figt news and give our own thoughts on this landmark heavyweight fight.

Daina Moorehouse has won national titles all through the ranks - won multiple European medals and recently transitioned into the adult ranks. Shes back to talk about the move up and everything else.

Boxing is back in a big way after it Summer slumber and this will be another action packed weekend. IN this episode we have feature interviews with Donegal Middleweight Brett McGinity who has just signed a pro contract to train under Ricky Hatton. We hear from Brett just before he left we also hear from Navan middleweight Chris Blaney who has been based and training under Hatton since he turned over a few years ago. Less than 12 months and in his 2nd fight with the famed Belfast trainer he was fighting for a world title in this episode he relives that famous shot which delivered his dreams "I saw he kept coming in the same way, he was perfect to walk onto the left hook so I used a roll and counter shot – and took him out with the left hook".

Dazzling Darren Sutherland

The name Darren Sutherland will be forever synonymous with Irish boxing. Around the mid 2000's he and his team mates eventually smashed the dreaded tag of 'nearly men' and at the Beijing Olympics of 2008 they won Ireland's first Olympic medals since the unforgettable scenes in Barcelona 1992 almost 16 years previously when Wayne McCullough and Micheal Carruth took silver and gold.

Subsequently his promising professional career opened out before the boxing worlds eyes - only to be stopped before it ever truly began.

In this little tribute - Ciaran McIvor of Boxing Bant's joins me to talk about his upcoming documentary - where he looks back at Darren's life - speaks to his team mates and former coach.

Safe to say Darren Sutherland will forever live in the memories of those who were lucky to watch him fight. And for those who weren't so lucky - hopefully this short tribute and Ciaran's upcoming documentary will give a good insight into one of the greatest to wear that Irish vest.

Tribute to One of Irelands Best Ever Boxers - Belfast's Finest - Wayne McCullough

A career that saw him fight the very best in the business - Arturo Gatti, Erik Morales, Yasuei Yakushiji, José Luis Bueno, Prince Nazeem Hamed, Daniel Zaragoza, Joel Casemeyor. INdeed the fights he didnt win - he worked himself almost to within an inch of his life. As an amateur he represented both Ireland and Northern Ireland - winning a Gold Medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Aukland and of course who could ever forget that historical Olympic Final tussle in 1992 with - ironically another legend who will be inducted to the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame this weekend with him - Joel Casemeyor. He went on to win the historical WBC Green belt by defeating Yasuei Yakushiji in his native Japan and fought another 6 times for world titles before calling time on a glittering career in 2008. This weekend he will be inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame at the Red Rock Casino Resort in Las Vegas where the great and good of world boxing will gather to pay homage to Wayne and his fellow inductees. Joining me in this tribute episode are Rachel Charles - one of the leading publicists in world boxing. Rich Marotta is an American sports personality in Reno, Nevada whos career spanned almost 30 years of sports and boxing broadcasting when he then went on to become of the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame. He joins the posdcast to share his memories of Wayne's career and deliver a special message of congratulations. Jason Quigley also chats briefly about how Wayne has and continues to be a big help and guide with his own career and last but not least the man himself speaks about al lthings boxing, his memories of Albert Foundary Gym and much more.

In a tragic week for the wider boxing family with the death of Maxim Dadasgev and also the dealth of Nika McGuigan daughter of Irish boxing icon Barry McGuigan. This episode is dedicated to the memory of both.

Theres a look over the return of pro boxing to Cork City last weekend with Leeside Revolution - G-Train Graham McCormack tells me about his thoughts i on his fight and his plan for the coming weeks and months. As Irish Boxing history books are written and time slips by - the are many great Irish warriors who laced up the gloves. Eamonn 'King' Kane is one of those standout warriors who will live long in the memory of many. From his sterling amateur career where he won European Gold, Commonwealth gold and wore the Irish vest with distinction to his pro career where he famously won the Prizefighter tournament in 2012 and of course his amazing battle with Tureano Johnson in Madison Square Garden. St. Brigid's Boxing Club in Edenderry embarked on an ambitious and groundbreaking new venture 12 months ago to refurbish and rebuild their existing club anb training quarters. Last night - Tues 10th July they opened the doors to a magnificent state of the art boxing facility. With dining and cooking are, kitchen facilities, dormitory's and living spaces for teams coaches. Satellite tv - the lot In this episode Kaitlyn Clark chats to me from her home in Canada. She tells me some of her life in boxing and how Liam Brerton and his groundbreaking International Sparring camps in Edenderry not only improved her boxing, transformed her into an Elite Canadian champion but also had a monumental impact on her life as a whole. Grainne Walsh - from Tullamore. For those who don't know the geography - its about a half hours drive. Grainne has just returned from the European Championships in Minsk where she won a bronze medal for Ireland and pushed the silver medalist all the way in their titanic battle. She joins me on this episode to speak a little about the tournament. What the podium is like - about Edenderry and that sparring camp - and her plans for the foreseeable future as the Olympic clock keeps ticking. Mercedes Taafe Cooper became known in Irish boxing circles when she coached & mentored Alan & Stephen Reynolds to win multiple senior Irish titles in the 90's. Fast forward to 2019 -She's emigrated to Australia and is the owner and founder of CounterPunch. CounterPunch is a results based innovative program that utilises a mix of performance psychology, sports science and boxing. The program teaches participants practical tools to both understand and effectively master the life skills needed to manage emotions such as stress, anxiety, anger and depression.

Farrell and Crolla produced one of the fights of the year going the distance for the English lightweight title. Crolla got the verdict and Farrell, who still believes he should have won the fight, instead he slowly slid to the canvas and into a spinning dark void. Thankfully, the injuries sustained by the then 22-year-old did not take his life. They did put a premature halt to a promising boxing career. But his new purpose is to guide, train & mentor the kids in his community - “That gym never would have been there if I hadn’t had the injury” he repeatedly states. Kieran is one of those special characters who has an inate ability to connect with you. His work with children in his gym and his dedication to the community of Manchester has earned him royal recognition in 2013 with a British Empire Medal from Her Majesty the Queen. The recent Celtic Clash 8 announcement seems a long way from its start in 2016 and has grown steadily in just 3 years - so I spoke to Declan Trainor who topped the bill that night in the fight of the year against Stephen ‘Block’ Reynolds. Dec talks about that fight, the years since & announces EXCLUSUVELY that he is making a comeback!! Following the Rio Olympics there were dark clouds that hanging over team Ireland. But they went back to the drawing board and rebuilt and we’re now seeing the bright beginnings of this new Team Ireland, young, dynamic and more comfortable with the media than most of their predecessors. But Tony Browne would safely fit amongst the highest of those profiles. Articulate, cerebral, dedicated and hungry and very clearly focussed now on Tokyo 2020. He joins the pod as he & his co-pilot travel from an early morning pool seission to a mid morning track seission.

Coyle (9-0, 3 KOs), who travels from Derry, Northern Ireland to America to finish training camp for every fight, headlined an RJJ Boxing on FIGHT PASS main event fight this past February in Saint Petersburg, Florida. His impressive eight-round decision over 19-4 Travis Scott led to RJJ Boxing signing its first Irish fighter. Coyle is matched against Robert Burwell (8-2, 3 KOs), fighting out of Orlando (FL)

Mike Tyson's friiend, sparring partner & 7 time Irish champion Big Joe Egan

Big Joe, as he is affectionately known, got his first ring baptism of fire when he fought the national junior champion Steve Collins. In Joe's second fight against Collins he proved that he'd come on in leaps and bounds. By the age of 24 he had recorded over 80 wins, 7 Irish titles and he was a Golden Gloves Champion. Joe fought 11 times wearing the green vest of Ireland and he attracted even more attention when he went the distance with Lennox Lewis and beat the future WBA champion Bruce Seldon. The fight had it all and enthralled those at the ringside.

Joe was encouraged by Floyd Patterson to try his luck in the USA, so Joe joined Mike Tyson's training camp in the Catskill mountains with the great Cus D'Amato. Joe became like a brother to Mike Tyson, who once said of Joe after a particularly vicious sparring session, that Joe was the Toughest White Man on the Planet. The two became the firmest of friends.

Joe's dreams of continuing as a boxer were cruelly shattered when he was forced to quit following a serious road accident on the night of his second pro fight. Changing fortunes saw him struggle to get his life back on track. His personal life hit the headlines after his former glamorous fiancée Lisa Murphy left him for Lord of the Dance (1997) Michael Flatley. The downward spiral continued with a new pub business venture pitting Joe against organised protection racketeers armed with guns, axes and machetes. Joe was shot and later charged with attempted murder.

In May 2004, after an absence of 12 years, Big Joe Egan made his ring comeback at 38 years old. In 2008, Joe broke into acting and was asked personally by Guy Ritchie to appear as himself "Big Joe Egan" in Ritchie's new film; Sherlock Holmes (2009).
