The Bible is inerrant. This has always been the conviction of believers throughout the ages until the 18th century Enlightenment when audacious attacks were mounted against Scripture. In this study of the doctrine of inerrancy, we examine the biblical basis for inerrancy, its history that culminated with the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, its clarification given by that statement, and the dangers of holding to an errantist view of Scripture.

If our lens is tinted, blurred, or otherwise skewed, all that we see is distorted and out of focus. But if our lens is clear and prestine, we can see crystal clear what God has revealed about Himself and our souls are richly blessed by believing, honoring, and obeying all that He has said. In this first study of Bibliology, we focus on the doctrine of inspiration. May the Spirit of God grant us both the mind and heart to receive His word for our good and for the glory of God.

We must trust in Christ who bore the cross in the place of sinners and heed His call to put to death the flesh and inviting the powerful influence of the Spirit of truth to dictate our thoughts and our affections. May the Lord tame the wolf of our flesh as the lion of the Spirit is enthroned in our minds and hearts.

FCC Sunday Sermon - Jesus our Passover and Coming Judge (John 19:31-37)

After giving two evidences of Jesus’ death, John reveals that His unbroken legs and spear wound also signified the fulfillment of a type and a prophecy of Scripture, namely, that Jesus is our Passover and coming Judge. These have implications. Jesus as Passover means that we must clean out the old leaven of hypocrisy and compromise. We are to be devoted to Him in sincerity and truth. Jesus as the coming Judge means that He will one day evaluate every one of us according to our deeds. Scripture repeatedly says that all who profess faith will give an account of himself before the Lord one day. The Lord will evaluate our hearts based on our deeds on that day. All who believe will have demonstrated their faith by their deeds. All the tares will be exposed by their deeds. Jesus is our Passover and the coming Judge. His unbroken legs and spear wound demonstrate these to be true. May the Lord give us grace to live as true believers in Him.

But in this text we also see the immense suffering of our Savior who has paid our ransom. There is hope for sinners because Christ Jesus suffered on our behalf. He has paid the price to call us out of sin and to transform our wicked hearts. May the Lord evermore lead and guide us to His pathway of righteousness for His name’s sake.

While Jesus was progressing toward the cross to pay the debt of sin of sinners, Simon Peter kept driving himself deeper and deeper into the debt of sin. The contrast between Simon the sinner and Jesus the Savior is as stark as it can be. John intertwines the two stories of Jesus’ trial and Peter’s denial to showcase the golden thread of Jesus’ righteous character against the contrast of Simon Peter’s dark black thread of sin and unfaithfulness. John writes this story for our sake that we would deal with our sins honestly before the Lord and recognize the Lord Jesus alone as our Savior who can cleanse us and restore us from all our sin and condemnation.

How glorious will be our eternal home! Scripture brims over with the pictures of that wondrous city. May the Lord teach us to fill our hopes and our dreams with the anticipation of this glorious future and see our fleeting life on earth as training grounds for heaven’s worship and service.

The millennial kingdom of our Lord means change in the present life, it will stamp out one final insurrection, and usher His people into the eternal kingdom of God because all their sins are counted as paid by the blood of the Lamb.

He invites them into a vital connection with their heavenly Father that they, too, might taste of the kindness of the Lord and their souls be satisfied with God.

As a result of this unity, Paul was specifically thankful for their participation in the Gospel. His appreciation was naturally filled with joy. Our joy should blossom in the same way as Paul’s did namely, from a Gospel centered unity in the church that leads to every member's participation.

After a delay of a half an hour, the judgments of God prayed for previously (6:10) come upon those who dwell on the earth. These are extraordinary and supernatural plagues not unlike those of Egypt. But even as Pharaoh did not repent at the sight of all the miraculous signs of his day, so those during the tribulation do not repent either. One exception exists of those who were in Jerusalem at the resurrection and ascension of the two witnesses. But the overwhelming testimony of Revelation is that those who are tormented in the tribulation still refuse to fear God, repent, and worship the Lord.

He demonstrates His good will to bless man in Eden and concludes history with an analogous bookend so we are assured that His intent with man is to shower His goodness and His blessing upon him. Paradise is the heavenly home of the believer, the New Jerusalem.

Psalm 37 is a Psalm written by Israel’s greatest king, king David. It reveals only two possibilities for the end of a person’s life. The wicked will be cut off by God’s judgment. Although they prosper abundantly in the present, their end is certain. They are not satisfied with prosperity, so they seek to destroy the righteous. Yet, the righteous seek refuge in the LORD. A repeated refrain in the Psalm is, “do not fret.” The path for settling your soul is through seeking refuge in God. The Christian’s heart is encouraged through this revelation of God, who sustains the righteous. Moreover, the Psalm directs Christians to trust, with great hope, in the LORD. The result is that they can progress through life’s difficulties and into eternity because of the salvation of God. He truly delivers those who seek refuge in Him from evildoers.

The revelation of the future is given from the perspective of heaven. God reigns as the supreme ruler and deity who is enthroned and worshipped in heaven. This revelation commences with Jesus breaking open the seals and shows the backdrop against which the judgments of God will come: ordinary and natural suffering in the fallen world and the persecution of Christians and their holy prayer for justice. In response to their prayer, divine wrath is poured out upon the world (with the seventh seal [8:1] and the trumpet and bowl judgments that ensue). All of this affirms the resounding biblical call to be ready for Christ. He is indeed coming quickly. May we be dressed in readiness and keep our lamps lit.

FCC Sunday Sermon - The Faithful Promises of God (Numbers 11-36)

The final section of Numbers weave together threads (topics) of army, land, and law. All of these point us to the faithfulness of God to preserve the people of Israel according to His promise. But that promise fits into the bigger promise of the Savior that goes back to Gen. 3:15 and Gen. 22:18. In the seed of the woman and the seed of Abraham, God will bless all the nations. Israel was a seed of Abraham, and out of Israel will come the one Israelite, the ultimate seed, who will save His people from their sins. This Savior’s mediatorial work is depicted in the man Moses. Moses was a self-sacrificing leader and shepherd for Israel, but he was not their Savior, for he himself was a rebel like them in need of the Savior. The true and ultimate mediator whose work Moses portrayed was the Lord Jesus Christ. The one who truly gave Himself up as a ransom for all who intercedes for His people is our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

After a period of arduous obedience, we see another side to the people of Israel. They were rebels at heart. Under the veneer of obedience lurked a wicked heart of rebellion. In this study, we consider the examples of rebellion and focus on one incident of rebellion and the unbelief that fueled that rebelliousness among this people. May we examine our own hearts that we not walk in the same example. May we seek Christ daily who is the perfect and sinless Savior who alone can save us from sin and hell.

By these shadows of the attributes of Christ the Old Testament pointed us to our awesome Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

God gave a picture in the OT of the preciousness of this sacrifice, its efficacy, and its outcome of reconciliation and peace with Him. God is an amazing artist who has drawn for us an impressive portrait of Christ in the sacrifice system for Israel.

FCC Sunday Sermon - A Royal Priesthood (Exodus 13-24)

The LORD brought Israel, a seed of Abraham, out of Egypt to make them into His own possession, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. They would enter a covenant for this privileged relationship with the holy God, and they would do so on His terms, the law. Although they entered this covenant with their eyes wide open (informed and aware of the solemnity of this covenant), they failed to be faithful. They violated this covenant and demonstrated that they needed a new heart by the grace of God (Deut. 30:6). Though they failed to be God’s true son (4:22), that holy and royal priesthood, Jesus fulfilled. He became all that Israel should’ve been and thus fulfilled the Father’s plan for the ultimate seed of Abraham who blesses all the nations as their priest and king, and how Peter applies this reality to the church is most stunning.

Godliness is the need of the hour for the church of God. How does the Holy Spirit work godliness in His church, especially, among the fathers of our church? He does so through the means of self-discipline. In this passage, Paul identifies this trustworthy principle of Scripture that godliness is the product of discipline. Godliness does not plop down from heaven onto our laps. It is the product of spiritual discipline and exertion. In this Father’s Day sermon, we examine Paul’s exhortation to Timothy meant for the church that we would be a people of discipline. We must be men of discipline. Men bless their homes to the extent that they grow in godliness and thus become a conduit of divine blessing upon their wives and children.

The promise of the worldwide blessing in Abram is more specified to be the promise in his seed. All of God’s promises to him ultimately culminates in that final seed of Abraham. The seed of the woman is the seed of Abraham and it is in Him that the blessing of God comes upon all of God’s people from all the nations.

In Genesis 4-11, Moses intertwines two themes of corruption and hope to show us that the sin of Adam perpetuates through the generations after him, without exception, and that the hope of the fulfillment of the promised seed continued throughout those generations. These chapters cover 20 generations of human corruption and hope amid all of human depravity in the seed of the woman. We today face a great deal of corruption also, both without and within, and our response is much like that of those who held fast to the promise of the LORD: we fix our eyes on the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ and earnestly hope in Him.

The promise of the seed of the woman is the final motif that begins in Genesis 3 that stretches through a major portion of Genesis and then developed through the rest of the Old Testament. The God of grace has given the promise of this seed, which looks ahead to Christ. He is the Victor over the deceiver and He shares His victory with all who are one with Him. In Christ, every child of God overcomes the world and the Devil. Hallelujah! What a Savior!

FCC Sunday Sermon - Jesus our Guardian (John 16:1-4)

The main idea of John 16 is best captured in the identity of Jesus as our Guardian. This idea is seen in vv 1-15 in that Jesus guards us from stumbling (vv 1-4a), from helplessness (vv 4b-11), and from ignorance (vv 12-15). In this first installment of our studies from John 16, we see how Jesus guards His disciples with His prescience (or foreknowledge) of their future persecution. Moreover, we see how Jesus also foretold us of the more general trials of life for His people (“tribulation” or “affliction” of 16:33). Amid all the trials of life, Jesus guards us from the greatest danger, the danger of falling away. He preserves His own to the very and He does so through means.

The LORD knew that Isaiah would face the temptation to conform to the unbelieving world around him. Therefore, He spoke to exhort and admonish the prophet to resist conformity and to stand firm on the revelation He had given him. There is a wonderful lesson for us as we embark upon the New Year. We, too, must resist conformity to the world and remain faithful and steadfast in our commitment to the word of God. Stand firm on the word of God is the encouragement that we find in verses 11-15 and 19-20.
