These last couple of years I've got into the habit of releasing a brand new album here on Patreon. It's a tradition I've really begun to enjoy so I just wanted to let you know that once again I'll post a collection of brand new tracks up here around Christmas time. I wanted to invite you to the test run of a new series of tutorials I wanted to offer to all of our friends here on Patreon.

The idea is to share with you some of the tricks and tips I've learnt during my journey making music, podcasts and mixes. So every Wednesday for the next four weeks, I'll publish a podcast on a different subject - then we'll meet up every Sunday on Zoom at 7pm (GMT) where you'll be able to ask questions or share your own ideas and best practices.

Some of the topics are aimed at people already involved in making music however there are tutorials here for complete beginners too. Even if you only have a passing curiosity, I'd like to extend the hand and welcome you, whatever your background.

The programme for the next four weeks is listed below. If it's successful I'll run some more and you'll be able to request things you are interested in.

I’ll also introduce you to the basic tools you’ll need to master your own records and help you decide when to get a professional in to help you.

I hope the you are enjoying the Summer (or winter for the Southern Hemisphere folks out there). The weather here in Southern England is glorious and I'm having a happy summer of running, eating and making music.

Now Cossus Snufsigalonia Part 2 is done (more on that shortly), I can move on to posting new original music here. I've decided it might be fun to post some 'fans only versions' up here on Patreon. The idea is that these are raw tracks, slightly underproduced but (hopefully) contain all the energy and heart of the original idea before it gets smoothed out with production and self-loathing.

It's an unusually short podcast this week as I put the finishing touches to the new Fear of Tigers album Cossus Snufsigalonica Part 2 which will be released here exclusively next Friday. In face, I open up today's podcast with a preview track called All The Wires.

Given that, we'll take a break next week whilst I drop the album, and we'll regroup in May. That said, do look out for new From The Crates which I'll release in the meantime. This month's there is Secret 90s and should be a lot of fun. Also there will be no making of podcast tomorrow whilst I continue production work on Cossus 2.

Now the time has come to start posting some of these tracks so you can download and listen at your own pace.

This track is called Ocean of Love and will likely be the album's opener. It's a very easy and simple piece of music and reveals the main themes for the record. I'll reveal more about the theme in the following days and weeks (or listen to the podcasts where I go through this in some detail).

I must also note that this is an early version. The arrangement and instrumentation are done, but there may still be changes to the final mix and balance of sounds. So this version will ultimately be replaced by the final album edition (consider it a rarity if you like!).

OK I hope you enjoy this first piece, and of course we are full steam ahead here and on course to get this record finished by May 1st.

This week I'm finishing up some of the ideas we played through on previous episodes so no new music to share in this episode. Instead, I talk though how I use samples in my music (it's a question that seems to come up a lot). First I talk about the ethics, rights and history of sampling and then I take deconstruct part a FOT track (an unreleased demo called Every Moment Could Be Ecstasy) and chart it's progression to a work called I Am Dog. The picture above is a snapshot of the session.

Liner notes:

This album was originally given away as a free download in 2016 although many of the tracks were written in the period between 2011 and 2013. This version includes Kaijukka, a bonus track from the original free download and Think I Miss You a track that was omitted from the final release.

This record is long, fearsome and dense with content and comes in at twice the length of its predecessor, Cossus Snufsigalonica. If I were to be critical, I’d say it’s too full. One idea barely get the chance to breathe and develop before the next self-contained world of sound begins. That said, if you’re brave enough to surrender to the full force of the sonic madness within, then you might just be rewarded.

The album is named after an esoteric book of the same name which translates as Poliphilo's Strife of Love in a Dream. It’s an obscure and daunting work but ultimately a rewarding one - if you can make it to the end that is!

I don't normally do tributes, but there was something about his death that touched me, I don't know why. In my view he was a true gent, an artist and a poet.

The album became a minor cult hit and won a diverse bunch of fans, from Thom Yorke, Bob Mould (of Husker Du fame) to Ville Valo of H.I.M. and it topped many of the the Bitorrent charts between 2010 - 2013.

Ten years later, I'm giving away this album again, complete with some previously unheard materiel from the era. These are the tracks that didn't make it onto the final album (you'll hear why!) but have lots of character and emotion. 

Many thanks to everyone who has supported me over this last ten years. Whether you have left an encouraging comment, shared my music with your friends or perhaps even bought a track or two, I couldn't have done this without you.

A special mention to Mrs Tigers who suggested I create an album in the first place (it hadn't occurred to me). And a special mention to Bertrand Rum who suggested we do an anniversary edition. Without these two folks we wouldn't have the original record or this re-released version. Finally a big thanks to everyone who continues to support FOT, on Patreon, Bandcamp and all the other platforms out there. It gives me something to get up for each day.

I've temporarily stepped back from uploading a new track a week as I have a number of album projects on the go which will be with you very soon. Read on below for a list of what's coming. Hopefully you managed to download a copy of The Synthwave Years and Remixology 2 which were both uploaded here over the last couple of weeks.

If you have any thoughts or opinions on the planned releases, or if there's anything you'd like to see or hear, please do leave a comment.

One of the factor that is common across these projects is my instinct to get my unfinished materiel out there, create definitive versions of the existing tracks and some create back-ups for posterity. 

I've attached one of the many many unfinished, untitled demos (snappily titled gb 1.2) that I've been trawling through recently. I remember shelving this one after some disparaging comments from my former a&r man but listening back it's full of energy and it's nice to have somewhere to share it. Ok it's not the greatest track ever, but listening to this should give you a little insight to what's going on inside my headphones right now.

And here's what I'm working on....

Nu Disco Dreams

The Fear of Tigers catalogue is getting rather large and can be difficult to navigate for newbies so I've decided to produce a series of compilations, the first of which was released last week called The Synthwave Years. The idea behind these is to group tracks that have a similar flavour together in one place. It also gives me an opportunity to revisit the songs, tidy them up a bit and remaster them.

The next of these compilations will be called Nu Disco Dreams and will bring together tracks like One Kiss, One Way Ticket To Ma Foom Bay and Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio etc. Like 'The Synthwave Years' it'll also feature new versions and an unreleased track or two.

Delivery date: Approx January 2020

Cossus Reloaded / 10 Year Anniversary Edition / Fans Only Edition

The album Cossus Snufsigaonica turns 10 years old on the 1st of December and it's been suggested to me (thanks Bertrand!) that we release an anniversary edition.

Quite what this form will take is a work in progress. There are certainly a few unreleased demos from the same period that could make a nice fans only edition, plus a handful of unfinished tracks that could make a nice montage piece (working title: Fallen Soldiers:).

The other idea would be to release a re-loaded version, i.e. some newer, remastered versions of the tracks in a similar style to the recent release I uploaded here called The Synthwave Years.

10,000 Ways To Love

This new album should hopefully be with you before Christmas. Originally I'd stated this for a summer release but a number of factors have delayed it. I've decided to take a different approach on this record. Whilst previous releases have really just been a collection of (hopefully) strong tracks, I wanted this version to sit like a proper long player, complete with interludes and spoken word snippets. It'll feature a few tracks that you may already know and number of new ones too.

The blogwave scene was a powerhouse of ideas but the production on some of the big tracks (including my own) hasn't quite stood the test of time. The goal with this new version of Pippi then is to create something that I'd feel comfortable playing on The Guestlist without having to make any special concessions. I wanted this version to be able to hold its own.

Releasing updated versions of older work is fairly well established in electronic music and while reworks can certainly misfire, there are plenty of good ones too. The very original version of Take On Me by A-Ha  is a perfect example of how a complete second pass can have dramatic consequences. Of course one has to be careful not to 'George Lucas it up' and include too may CGI'd banthas. 

So here's an early version of my Pippi re-work but there's still more to do on this. What do you think so far? I am Morten or George? Do you think it's a good idea to rework things from the past and if so which tracks? I have a few in mind but I'm interested to know if there are any that pop out for you.

Remixology Part 2

In 2017, I released Remixolgy Part One, a collection of 25 Fear of Tigers remixes produced between 2007 - 2016. This release featured some of my best work and included official remixes for Ellie Goulding, Max Richter, LeAnne Rimes, The Infadels, Kylie Minogue, VanBot, Sound of Arrows, Bright Light Bright Light, Neon Jungle, Visitor and more. You can download this collection here.

Remixology Part Two, introduces a much more eclectic selection of mixes, including hard to find, unreleased and deleted tracks. Many of these mixes were official, whilst a couple were turned down by the label and there are a few unofficial and early remixes that hark back to the MySpace era. Included too is one of my first official remixes that got a full release which dates way back to 2001, when I was still a young bairn. 

Stylistically, we’re all over the place, from the indie cool of Bent, We Are Performance and Archangel to the gauche campy pop of Killabyte and Dream Beats. You’ll also find a Korean language track, a remix of a terrible novelty record, a bonafide 80s cult classic and even a couple of down-tempo numbers. This release then really is an unapologetic mixed bag - and whilst (hopefully) you’ll find some good stuff on here - some are just for the archive.

I’ve also recorded a podcast in which I talk through the art of remixing, my personal ethos and some of my favourite remixers and remixes from over the years. 

I’ve also written a little about each remix in case you’d like to know something of the back story behind them and how they sound to me now. BTW if you think I’m giving myself a slap on the back with each remix, this compilation is front loaded and the reviews get a lot more critical towards the end.

Remixolgy Part 2 - The Stories behind the remixes and what I think of them

We Are Performance - Let’s Start (Fear of Tigers Remix) 

Performance were a Manchester based band indie band who were briefly signed to Polydor back in the day. This was one of a number of remixes that was put my way by Rich Coleman who worked for a well known music management company. This remix was turned down by the band and I talk about the reasons remixes are often rejected in the accompanying podcast to this release. (We Are) Performance have long since disbanded but the vocalist went on to become a novelist. I went for almost a decade without hearing this remix. I’d completely forgotten that it existed, let alone how it was made. Listening back, I like it. The song is doing much of the work on this one, my touch is pretty light overall.

SSL - Secret Sunday Lover (Fear of Tigers Remix)

This is a super early Fear of Tigers style remix, circa 2005. My friend Jimmy worked at EMI in West London whilst I worked at Sanctuary Records not far down the road. We were both doing entry level work and would often meet up to talk about music and put the world to rights. He slipped me the stems for this track perhaps hoping that I’d create something amazing that would kickstart his career. Whether the band of the label ever heard this - I don’t know. But listening back I think it has a lot of charm and takes the song in places that go far beyond structure of the original.

Visage - Fade 2 Grey (Fear of Tigers Remix)

This remix of Visage - Fade To Grey, was done for a chap who briefly managed me. I did a number of remixes for him including Bulletproof by La Roux which appears on Remixology Volume 1 but was turned down by the artist. This remix however did get past the gatekeepers and got a release, albeit fairly low key one. I talk about the reason why remixes often get turned down in the accompanying podcast that accompanies Remixology.

If you don’t know the original track, it’s a classic slice of proto new romantic synthpop and went on to inspire a whole bunch of people. This is the era of Ashes To Ashes by Bowie and you can certainly see the connection between these two records. When coupled with the artwork, the video and the mythos behind lead singer Steve Strange - it's a difficult track to criticise. But honestly - as a piece of music alone, is it really that great? I'm sorry to blast a hole in the legend but I'm a heretic - what can I say.

That said, I like the track as completed piece of work, but taking it apart I realised just how bad the production and performance was on the record. Frankly, it's ruined it for me. It works as a whole but when one breaks down the individual elements it just falls apart.

There is also an issue with remixing a bonafide classic. Other than just making it sound more contemporary (which has never been my interest), what can one really do with such calcified, time-honoured golden oldie? I remember once sitting in the communal area of a record label, trying to explain to the A&R man why I didn't have any interest in remixing Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood for similar reasons. Just as I was questioning why I was turning it down a voice popped up from the seat behind to agree with me and explain that's he'd also turned down the offer to remix Relax. The mysterious interjector? Mark Ronson.

Back to Visage though - In the end, unable to do anything with the stems, I thew away all my attempts to remix Fade to Grey and instead overlaid the vocal on an existing piece of music I had written, one that already worked instrumentally. In many ways then, this is a Fear of Tigers record rather than a remix in my view. And, listening back I like it, I think it’s a sweet little unassuming piece of music that had little to do with the original.

Plumb - Drifting (Fear of Tigers Remix)

I know very little about Plumb but I believe they are a Christian rock band from the United States. This remix was very very hard work, I just couldn’t quite get the sound I wanted. We put the work in though, the band liked it and even re-sung the vocals so the whole thing would sit better. I’ve listened back to it for the first time whilst writing this text and my conclusion is that it’s not too bad at all but my memories will always be about how hard it was to pull off.

Archangel - Not The Man You Think I Am (Fear of Tigers Remix)

Archangel were fronted by Andrew Lloyd Webbers son, although that was a big secret at the time. He’s since gone on to become a music composer himself I believe which is just as well as the band never took off and this remix didn’t do much to help. Listening back, I think it’s ok, not bad for the era and I’m pleased that I managed to do something the original didn’t.

The Jonas Brothers - First Time (Fear of Tigers Remix)

Sometimes a remix can be a reflection of what you put in - ie, what are the original stems like - how well recorded they are, is there any original instrumentation and crucially is the song any good? In the case of this record, the parts were great, really well played and recorded and the song is… well it’s The Jonas Brothers, it’s bound to be very commercial. I felt like I did a good job on this, it’s creative, the fidelity is good but it still twists the original up a little. Their label were really pleased with the record but sadly the band spilt up and all promo was cancelled.

Pudditorium - Moonlight (Ben’s Dirty Bertie remix)

This was a remix for a song I wrote and produced with a Korean artist called Pudditorium. Frankly I was disappointed the way the original turned out and tried to make up for it with this remix. In the end the label only released our original version and very few people have ever heard this. It’s a fun and rather creative piece of music but because this is still fresh in the memory (produced 2018), it’s hard for me to be too critical either way at the moment.

The Venus Stare - Close To You (Fear of Tigers Remix)

The Venus Stare was a side project of Rod Thomas and Sophie Galpin. You may know Rod from Bright Light Bright Light. I can’t quite remember doing this remix but I always felt a bit embarrassed about it - was it too cheesy? I don’t know but hearing it back and with a less serious head on I think it’s quite fun although admittedly it’s not going to win any awards.

Cathy Dennis - Touch Me (Ben’s Old School workout)

This is a 2004 pre-Fear of Tigers bootleg using the wonderful accapella/pianopella B side that accompanies the original vinyl. I created a new music bed, bassline and beats and then simply dropped the accappella over the top (live from the deck). I added in a sample of Farley Jackmaster funk at the beginning who I had DJ’d with in Spain a couple of times - we record this audio snip live at the club with 100s of people looking on. I love this piece of music and of course it’s all about the original but… this remix still does something I’ve not heard others do. I suspect this song will come around again in some form and I’m glad to have been a tittle in the ‘i’ of the historical footnote.

Le Kid - We Are The Drums (Fear of Tigers Remix)

This was part of a series of remixes I did for a number of Swedish / Finnish artists. I felt like I’d failed with the remix and I listening back I can’t say I exactly love it. Still, the band liked it, so that was something.

Another Swedish remix, I think the common thread among these is the producer Anders Hansson who did the original production for many of these. I felt like I did a good job of this remix and the artist and label liked it too. Yes, it’s camp and cheesy - that’s the point!

Killabyte - Follow Me Home (Fear of Tigers Remix)

Another camp Swedish remix - I’m channeling my inner Stock, Aitken and Waterman on these records. Listening back I think the production is good although I’d bring the brass sound up in the last quarter.

Alcazar - Feel 4 You (Fear of Tigers Remix)

This was a lot of hard work. I didn’t love the original and really wanted to cut large parts of it out and change the whole thing completely. In the end I came up with this rave throwback thing. I’m not sure it’s an easy listen but pulling this off and changing it so fundamentally was a personal triumph. Surprisingly, the producer and the label liked it too.

Martin Rolinkski - Blame It On A Different Matter (Fear of Tigers Remix)

Let’s be frank, this is Scandi pop at it’s most, erm Scandi Pop. When I listened back to this I was pleasantly surprised with the production.

Bent - To Be Loved (Mr B Remix) / Bent - The Handbrake (Mr B Remix) / Bent - Waiting For You (Mr B Remix)

This was a series of remixes I did for the UK dance / indie band Bent who had a pretty good profile at one point in time. These were probably produced around 2006 before Fear of Tigers was really a thing. I don’t love these listening back but - ‘warts and all’ - it’s good to include them. This were originally realised as part of the single promo and later appears on the extended version of the album Intercept. My one claim to fame one this one was having Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) play To Be Loved at the Rio Carnival which I thought was incredibly exciting.

Mille - Crysteena (Fear of Tigers remix)

Mille is a legendary but now MIA nu-disco producer who was active circa 2010. If you’ve never heard of him look up his track Afterski, a track I bloody love. Crysteena was a pretty big deal on the blogwave circuit and the original and my remix ended up getting a release on the New York based and once much influential boutique record label Neon Gold. I’ll be honest - despite being a big fan of Mille, I didn’t love the original. I find the lead sound a bit annoying. Ditto then I don’t love this remix although I seem to remember that it was a fun and easy one to make.

Does It Offend You Yeah - Dawn of the Dead (Ben’s MySpace Throwback Mix)

DIOYY were an early indie house / blog house / nu disco band from the UK. Contemporaries of people like MSKRFT, Boyz Noise and a few others. I’m not quite sure how I got hold of the stems for this but it was done for fun and went up on MySpace. The band I think have long since disbanded.

X-Press 2 - Kill 100 (Ben’s MySpace Throwback Mix)

This was an entry to a remix competition that X-Press 2 ran way back. I don’t love this listening back to this. I can hear what I would do now and where I went wrong. Still it’s good for the record. Needless to say, I didn’t win the competition.

Duran Duran - Nightrunner (Ben’s MySpace Throwback Mix)

Another remix competition. I struggled with this and I’m not sure I even sent it off in the end. This was from the band’s Timberlake produced album and probably not representative of their best work. Actually I seem to remember the original was a rather bland mid 2000s r&b style record. I’m actually pleasantly surprised in listening back to this - the production is pretty good for the time. Well done Ben of years past.

Mariah Carey - I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time (Ben’s MySpace Throwback Mix)

Another one for the MySpace feed. I was trying to do something like the Justice remix of MGMT - no easy feat as I found out. I think this track is a nice try but falls way short of what I wanted. 

Evokateur - White Horses (Fear of Tigers remix)

I must admit I know very little about Evokateur, but I do remember the original track - it was a 1990s style trip hop thing in the vain of Lamb. I tried to do my best by these guys but not convinced this is the greatest thing I’ve ever done. 

Jessie Fry - Honey (Fear of Tigers remix)

Jessie is an up and coming artist who is still relatively young, so time will tell whether she’ll break through to the mainstream or not. I liked the original track but when I came to do this remix (circa 2017) I had just lost my confidence completely. My best remixes have been when I’ve had little respect for the original and bent to stems to my own twisted ends. When I came to this remix, I played it safe and I regret that I wasn’t more creative.

Sam and the Womp - Bom Bom (Fear of Tigers remix)

Sam and the Womp was a dreadful novelty record of which Trevor Horn’s son Arron was prominent member. I was press-ganged into doing this remix by someone who was close to the project (not Arron who is a nice chap) and can’t really recommend this remix at all, which is here for the record only. 

Spencer Product - Nightology (Fear of Tigers remix)

Another one for the completists only. The source materiel was pretty basic but I’m pleased I managed to get something out of it.

Tramdolls - Kiss Me (Fear of Tigers Remix)

This was a record by my buddy Joel from Deepest Blue. The label hated it and I must admit looking back I’m not sure how I feel about it. I think there are some good bits about it but as a whole? the jury is out…

D.D. Klien - Alive - (2 Step In Tenerife Remix)

This was the first commercial remix I ever did way back in 2001 when I was a professional DJ living in Spain. My friend Simone and I had a tiny studio in the back of his record shop - super basic equipment but we managed to make this remix which had some post production from Luca Moretti - a very well respected Italian producer who has worked on hundreds and hundreds of big dance records (you may remember him from his original project Triple X - Feel The Same). The vocal was an add-on to the remix only, vocals by Brinsley Forde, the lead singer of Aswad who we were very friendly with at the time. Simone now works in luxury property in Ibiza (his instagram page is an endless feed on luxury yacht chilling with people like the Winklevoss twins) whilst Brinsley has been knighted by the Queen. And here I am struggling to get ten people to buy this release - where did I go wrong?

Deep Cover - Sounds of Eden (Church of Disco Remix)

Another early remix dating to 2001. Deep Cover were my friends (and DJ rivals) Scott and Leon who used to DJ at the club opposite mine. In fact I could see into their booth from my position and could tell how busy their club was and who was playing. I always liked this remix, which was made on super simple equipment - a rudimentary PC, a Korg Triton and and Akai S3000 sampler. 

Faithless - Bombs (Galaxy 21 Remix)

If I had to pick the worst remix on this collection, this would certainly be it and to be fair, it wasn’t Faithlesses finest hour either. The chap who commissioned me to do this took me for a swanky lunch to Soho House, which back then was a real celebrity haunt. When we were chatting about the record I (just) managed to hold back that I was no big fan of Faithless which was just as well as I later found out he was the partner of one of the band members. Maybe I should have learnt my lesson!

This remix of Visage - Fade To Grey, was done for a chap who briefly managed me. I did a number of remixes for him including Bulletproof by La Roux which appears on Remixology Volume 1 but was turned down by the artist. This remix however did get past the gatekeepers and got a release, albeit fairly low key one. I'll talk about the reason why remixes often get turned down in the accompanying podcast that accompanies Remixology.

If you don’t know the original track, it’s a classic slice of proto new romantic synthpop and went on to inspire a whole bunch of people. This is the era of Ashes To Ashes by Bowie and you can certainly see the connection between these two records. When coupled with the artwork, the video and the mythos behind lead singer Steve Strange - it's a difficult track to criticise. But honestly - as a piece of music alone, is it really that great? I'm sorry to blast a hole in the legend but I'm a heretic - what can I say.

That said, I like the track as completed piece of work, but taking it apart I realised just how bad the production and performance was on the record. Frankly, it's ruined it for me. It works as a whole but when one breaks down the individual elements it just falls apart. 

There is also an issue with remixing a bonafide classic. Other than just making it sound more contemporary (which has never been my interest), what can one really do with such calcified, time-honoured golden oldie? I remember once sitting in the communal area of a record label, trying to explain to the A&R man why I didn't have any interest in remixing Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood for similar reasons. Just as I was questioning why I was turning it down a voice popped up from the seat behind to agree with me and explain that's he'd also turned down the offer to remix Relax. The mysterious interjector? Mark Ronson.

Back to Visage though - In the end, unable to do anything with the stems, I thew away all my attempts to remix Fade to Grey and instead overlaid the vocal on an existing piece of music I had written, one that already worked instrumentally. In many ways then, this is a Fear of Tigers record rather than a remix in my view. And, listening back I like it, I think it’s a sweet little unassuming piece of music that had little to do with the original.

Today's download is an artist I know very little about but was part of a tetralogy of remixes I did for a number of Swedish artists. In fact these releases only ever got a Swedish release I believe and good quality versions of them can be a little hard to find.

The remix itself is uber camp pop romp in the vain of Stock, Aitken and Waterman. Personally I love S.A.W. and whilst they have a hardcore and much devoted audience, they are often regard with a certain amount of scorn by folks elsewhere in the business. 

If I had to pick one S.A.W. production, it would be Bananarama's Love In The First Degree - a quintessential slice of pop culture that conjures the innocence of 1980's Britain perfectly. Of course my little remix can't even go near this record, but hopefully I managed to channel just a little bit of it.

I've come to realise that lurking away in my collection are at least another 25 remixes that span 2001 - 2017. My intention is to upload this collection to Bandcamp in the next week or so as a paid for download and I'll be giving some of these away on social media as part of the promotion. 

I just wanted to let you know that I'll also be posting all 25 tracks here as a complimentary download for Patreon subscribers here via WeTransfer or something similar so no need to download on Bandcamp. I've also decided against uploading the tracks individually to Patreon, as there are 25 of them and I think it might be overkill to upload them all one by one. However I will post the odd one or two over the coming weeks as a free download for Patreon's and non-patreons alike. 

Ok I hope that makes sense. The aim is to give away all new or repackaged content to our Patreons as part of their membership. 

My first pass of Remixology Part 2 is below (subject to change). And to kick off proceedings, I'm uploading my unreleased remix of First Time by The Jonas Brothers. This remix got the green light however, the band split up and all promotional efforts were cancelled by the label. This is among my more accomplished remixes and despite the track's obvious cheesiness, I still quite like it.

The is a very verbose episode and features a lot more speech than normal as I take you through from the origins of filter house to the later genre that is often called French Touch.

My key thesis here is, that contrary to popular opinion, Daft Punk did not invent filter house, they were a product of a much wider scene that had it's origins in the US. In fact the earliest filter house record I can find was produced by Roger Sanchez in 1991.

So this isn't a French House retrospective - if you'd like to research that I suggest looking up Roule and the Crydamoure imprints. Again, the popular misnomer about these labels is that they somehow invented the scene - they didn't but due to the success of Daft Punk, they are just one of the few labels folks can remember.

I find that tracks with minor chords need a certain degree of angularity and pointedness to make them pop and I hope I've managed to achieve a little of of that on this little number.

*geeky side note: yes I'm mixing metaphors by mentioning the Tang (a Chinese dynasty who ruled 618 to 907 AD) and Kuniyoshi who's art came 1000 years later in a completely different language and culture. Having been born in Japan I've spent a lifetime explaining to Westerners the vast, vast differences between the two nations. For me, Japan's history and culture is relatively easy to grok, whilst China's is a like an infinite universe of concentric circles complete with mystic taoists, magic elixirs, dark magic and swords. Viewed from the distance of time of course the line between fact and fiction is hard to discern, nevertheless if I can't comeback as a mountain sage in the next life, I might lobby the lords of the underworld to cast me as a berobed necromancer, controlling the elements and summoning demons from the void...

Here's a new track inspired by the like of Krystal Kleer, Skream etc. I'm consciously trying to do something more clubby with this one and might well put this out under a different moniker when the time comes to release it. I've been toying with the name 'Truth Machine' which I quite like.

As for the name - I don't particularly hate influencers. In the pantheon of obnoxious shits, influencers are pretty low down my list and their are far greater targets for my coiled-up, bitter rage. Never-the-less when humanity finally comes to its senses and installs me as its lord and ruler, these guys should probably go into hiding. That said, they'll have a head start on their getaway as my regime begins an immediate purge of slow walkers, ticket machine fumblers and people who talk loudly on the train.

This track is the original demo of a track I wrote with MNEK and Anita Blay at Trevor Horn's studio in Notting Hill circa 2014 and was later recorded and released by K-Pop artist Jiyoung.

In this instance I built a new jack style groove around which MNEK and Anita wrote a basic topline. MNEK then took this back to his studio and re-recorded the vocals with a new singer called Camille (sorry I forget her surname). The track was then touted to various artists and record labels before eventually being picked up by JY, a former member of K-Pop group Kara, so the vocal on this was recorded again, this time by the artist - which you can hear in this clip.  Compare the two and it should be fairly apparent that there are two completely different singers on the track.

I was going through a bit of a disco-cut up phase at the time and this is one of a handful of tracks I've released in this vein - other notable examples include I Am Dog, Twisted Biscuit, One Kiss and Strange Tales From a Chinese Studio. 

My process is to stitch a bunch of random samples together in Ableton, a bit like a crazy jigsaw and literally just see what fits. Many of the snips are less than one second long and even I was surprised by just how many samples were running in this. Once I've got a basic hook with the samples, I drop some of the loops into Logic and start experimenting with chords and basslines. It's a bit of a fiddly process and it owes as much to luck as it does to skill.

I'd love to remix these tracks properly at some point - ie, really take them apart and put them back together again ('George Lucas it up' one might say). But for now here's the extended version which is pretty faithful to the original although I have cut a couple of decibels on the master to wind back on the distortion a little; not too much mind - I like the furious feel.

Professional songwriting is a funny game. How does it work? 

Typically your publisher will send you a list of artists looking for songs and a brief description of what they're looking for. The brief lists are usually pretty diverse, indeed I remember writing songs for Azelia Banks, Cee-lo Green, Icona Pop, Erik Prydz and One Direction - none of them ever used, which is quite normal. The idea is that the publisher will then pitch your demo to the artist's label and if it doesn't land with the artist you wrote for, they might be able to use it for one of their (usually lesser) acts. How this pitching process actually happens or how good the publishers are at actually pitching the songs out is a bit of a mystery. To be fair to them it's a hard old game. A big artist like Brittany Spears will have hundreds of songs written for her for just one album project. They make even take scores of these forward for full production but only a handful will ever get released. There is also a hierarchy of songwriters who are deemed worthy. I had a brief window (now long gone) where my tracks would at least get listened to. But to stay in the premiere league, you need to have hit after hit. One turkey and you're back to the bottom - just look at once famous UK writer/producers such as Xenomania, Richard X or even Stuart Price. These guys were once at the top of their game but can't get arrested these days. Equally there are a handful who seem to have stayed relevant all this time - Richard Standard, Hannah Robinson and Max Martin spring to mind.

This is one of the many tracks in my archive which is the result of these sessions. You'll hear it's quite different to my normal output (as most of the songs were) yet I've always had a soft spot for this track. I forget who we were writing for when we made this but it didn't get picked up.

The vocalist is my old writing partner Anita Blay of Cocknbull Kid fame who has gone on to write tracks for Little Mix, OneRepublic and is one half of the UK/Aussie house duo Anthony and Cleopatra. She's a talented lass and I enjoyed working with her although the full time songwriter gig is not for me.
