"We rock in with almost a crocodile, an inflatable crocodile under our arm and they're like, who are these jokers? But actually they quite like the fact that we're not corporate. So if anyone is starting up a business, just be yourself because there are so many suits and so many pointy shoes and so much of that tie stuff going on that if you just be yourself and you will stand out that way. I'm not saying don't wear a suit because there are people here wearing suits. Be yourself because that's, that's why we've got to where we've got to and that's why they still will respond to us first, you know, on email, and they will ignore our sales guy for six months who will be trying to get them all the time and then we drop them a mail and they respond straightaway because they they like the chat. We chat to them as if we're talking to a mate in the pub because at the end of the day, they're just humans."

"It's really quite complicated doing international because you don't know whether you just pick up the phone and ring a supermarket buyer in some country, or you work with a distribution company. And if you work with a distribution company, do you have to pay for the marketing? Or do they pay for the marketing? Or do you split it down the middle and then end up splitting hairs and saying, I paid for this and I pay for this? And we had out of the blue company in Cyprus rang us the other day, a distribution company, they said - Can we buy a few pallets off you we want to put it into these supermarkets?"

"Coming off something like The Apprentice, I get so many messages every single day. Do you want to start a business? Would you like to go into, you know, coaching and consulting or the third one is profit share. And I stay away from profit share 100% of the time, because if I'm working on somebody else's business and have this percentage, usually it's 20-25%. It's not me making the calls. And it's not me helping them out. It's all about them because it's their business. And I think, especially if you're not an established business person, which you know, I'm not I'm still I'm still young, I'm still a baby business, I'm still a baby businesswoman. If I start taking on too many things, I lose the focus on what she really matters, and that's growing my business."

I chat to Sabrina Stocker, best known for appearing on the BBC One show The Apprentice. She's also a successful entrepreneur, having launched My Tennis Events in 2016 with zero capital. She started her first business at the age of just 14 and became the youngest person ever to graduate from Edinburgh Business School with distinction. The London born entrepreneur also won the prestigious Queen Tennis Tournament age just 12. Like most entrepreneurs, she's got eyes on other opportunities.

"I'm really happy where it is at the moment. We've got a team of 42. We've got 10 venues with, you know, the biggest event company in the UK. I'm happy where it is. And again, I think the true spirit of an entrepreneur is that you just don't want to have one business. You want to have several. And if I spent the next 10 years really investing into this tennis business, and there's only you know, there is only so much a tennis business can grow. Then if everything falls apart, I'd have nothing else to go on to. So I'm in a place now where I'm launching a new business but allowing the current one to keep running in the background."

"One thing that I, I am very convinced about, and I prove to myself time and time again is the ability to see things to make them happen. And I've proved that again and again, as I said, where if you can really see something, you can definitely achieve it. And if I had to go back to when I was younger, even now with my own children, you know, I always install the thinking that you can really achieve anything you want. And, you know, of course, education is important. And of course, having that formality in, you know, in your interest in the way forward that you get put through in terms of the education and stuff I think that is, is great, but it's not, it's not what you need to be successful in life. Yeah, absolutely. Any sort of in business life, you know, and it's not a dependency and if you don't have an education, you can still, you know, achieve so much. And that is my case, because I you know, I didn't go to university, I didn't, you know, finish university, and so I didn't need that to be ultimately what's deemed as successful today."

I talk to Avi Lasarow, who created a global brand DNAfit, scaling it to a £20 million business with zero funding, and Avi is the CEO International for the worlds most comprehensive DNA test - CircleDNA. Avi's held a lifelong ambition to use genetics to transform the health and wellness for millions of people by striving to reduce and prevent lifestyle related health conditions, so we can all live healthier and happier lives.

"I always see being an entrepreneur and doing your job as almost like a hobby. So my wife, for example, that's riding horses. She'll do that all the time when she's not at work. She's riding horses. Yeah, for me when I'm at work, I'm at work because work is my equivalent to that kind of hobby. Yeah, she does use against me, by the way, because when I say hey, you know I'm doing because work she'll say, No, no, you didn't because of a hobby. But um, I think if I had to separate something I'm trying to is difficult is to try and separate technology from, from, from the personal life that makes sense. So I might not separate work, because if I don't have technology, I might write my ideas down or conceptualise things out of the technology framework. And that's the big distinction I'm trying to do because I think it's healthier to do so."

"We wanted the branding, the brand really to last a lifetime. And I think for us it was walk before you run. So it was really treated slowly make sure the brands big enough that if we are lucky enough to be put on a shelf that it definitely gets taken off. So that, that was a key for us which I think we're at that stage now, which is quite exciting."

I talk to Oliver Bennett, XITE Energy Drink Founder and World Championship Rallycross Driver. XITE energy hit the market at the beginning of 2019. Selling out of Holland & Barrett nationwide, in just its first two weeks, but creating a sugar free blend was just the start of his journey. We chat about taking on the big boys and how he launched the business straight out of university with his partner Megan Jones.

"When we started sort of our own sort of direct sales really, which is, you've probably seen traditional energy drinks do, we have XITE vans, guys and girls in the vans, pulling from depots going around selling it to independent gyms, independent shops or some shops are led to stock other products. I mean, really just defining our own destiny that way. And so, you know, obviously, our ultimate aim is to be in national retail. So it's a distribution game isn't it? You've got to be able to pick the drink up ultimately and we're controlling that ourselves a bit with our own sales. So it's quite, quite different way to do it."

"I didn't have any experience of homelessness or know anybody really, that was living on the streets, you know. I didn't really know all of the areas that we would need to make a change to their life. But actually seeing how the sale of coffee in our case, is making a difference to someone getting their keys for the first time for their new flat or to being paid the living wage or to get their bank account. All those issues which they're struggling with, all coming about through the sale of coffee. Just was such an incredible moment. So therefore, for me being able to look back now and say actually, firstly this models worked in at first instance, but we're growing at such a speed that it's making on a day by day basis, a real difference to people's lives."

I talk to Cemal Ezel, Founder and CEO of Change Please, who are using coffee to tackle homelessness by retraining people who are homeless as baristas, and providing a London living wage job, housing, bank account, therapy and support. From selling coffee across London through mobile vans, Change Please coffee is now stocked by Sainsbury's nationwide and served on Virgin Atlantic planes and trains.

"The first say four, five months was all about us learning what we need to do, who we are, what's our kind of position within the coffee market. And I think slowly, there's a bit of a tendency to kind of see the first people that come along who know what they're talking about, and try and get them involved to give you support. And I just wanted to kind of hold back a little bit and make sure that actually the people that do join the board are people that are genuinely going to invest time, energy, relationships and also add value as opposed to coming doing this as partly a vanity project. And I think that's one of the reasons that we've grown so quickly because we've chosen some really incredible people."

"I work really practically in the industry, to highlight the talent pool that support staff provide the businesses and how those businesses can tap into that talent and maximise it. So it's about having, when we set up the business, it was about having a voice for change. It was about, not being like other recruitment companies, we looked at the businesses that we aspired to be. Some of those were cliched, you know, the Virgins, the Apples, the big brands, but where there was an ethos, where there was a strong message, where that message was felt by the team, so that when you walked in, you felt those core values. And you felt that this was a company that looked at individuals, you know, in holistic way."

"Great businesses have a message. It's not just about great marketing. It's something that's felt - you can feel it, touch it, you can sense it. And it's. And it's something that's also forward thinking. It's got a forward motion that feels like it's creating a change for the better and in an industry it loves. So I love what we do. I love our industry, but I know that we should be evolving and getting better and better. And I think that's what a great business is all about."

"All my friends, if they look at the back of a bottle, they just say this is you in bottle form. It's very quirky. You know, it's fun. It kind of provokes a reaction in the customer. It was always designed for the social media, millennial, living generation. So I don't tend to find that anyone would drink the drink without taking a photo of it first, which is free marketing. So because it's so, so extra, let's say that word. That's another one that Lord Sugar probably wouldn't know, because it's so extra and so different people are this is quirky, take a photo, send it to their friend, tag Mylkplus and then it snowballs."

"I think it has been quite positive, people love hearing about an underdog. I do think that I have had a positive view in terms of all the press that has gone out. It is weird that people take your photo and wanting photos with you which is madness. I have had a few press interviews telling the story and it is an effective platform to spread the message. When anyone asks me for a press interview I will always say yes, cos no press is bad press."

In this episode I chat to Camilla Ainsworth, the youngest finalist in the history of the BBC Apprentice series. A former law student, Camilla was just 22 when she appeared on 2018's The Apprentice, narrowly missing out in the final. Whilst Lord Sugar didn't choose her, the CEO of Holland & Barrett was suitably impressed with her vegan Nut milk brand  Mylkplus and she went ahead to launch the dairy alternative into 645 of their stores where in continues to sell out.

Alongside being stocked in several retail outlets, M+LKPLUS was the first dairy free product to be made available to patients, visitors and staff at NHS hospitals throughout the UK. 

Camilla was recently listed in the 'Top 10 women to watch list’ of 2019 in the drinks industry and has huge plans for the business this year including new products and more retail listings. Camilla is a huge advocate for women in business and has conducted workshops to facilitate start ups.
