This isn’t a casting contest for models or movies, but for anglers to see who has the most skill when it comes to throwing fishing lures and bait.

Join me as I give you some considerations for putting on your own event as a fun competition for your group or as an outreach event for your church. I considered breaking it into two episodes, but because it's such a good conversation, I decided to go ahead and leave it all together as a long format show.

Mark Long of FCA Endurance is my guest for episode 14 of the Filled Quiver Outdoors podcast. Endurance athletics isn’t a topic you’d expect to fit into the stereotype of an “outdoors” show like this one, but where do most endurance events happen? Outdoors.

Maybe that’s pushing it or oversimplifying matters, but also falling under the umbrella of endurance athletics you find mountain biking, trail running, ultramarathon, open water swimming events, etc.

FCA Endurance is an adult-focused arm of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and while on the surface it appears to be mostly triathletes and runners it’s open to, and includes, athletes from a wide array of endurance disciplines. Because of this, and because I’m a curious person, I created a very informal survey which anyone can take to see what other stereotypically outdoors activities endurance athletes enjoy participating in. If you want, you can still fill out that survey here. It will be available until jotforms closes it down or the maximum number of responses is received. I’ll update the results on our website periodically as I receive new results.

As mentioned in the episode, new Filled Quiver Outdoors merchandise is coming soon.

My guest for episode 13 is Pete Rogers, the owner and host of the Christian Outdoors podcast when he isn’t on his day job as a trapper for the USDA. Pete was gracious enough to explain what is involved in being a trapper for the USDA and also share some tips for prospective trappers, including his top secret bait recipe.

After we talked about the Christian Outdoors Podcast and trapping, we had to talk about turkey hunting since he has published a book on the subject and opening day for spring seasons around the country are nearly here. Before we close out with a round of Me Too! Pete tells his faith adventure which is a powerful story to hear.

On this episode of the Filled Quiver Outdoors podcast I had the pleasure of talking with professional angler Ott Defoe. We didn’t talk about his 2019 Bassmaster Classic championship or 8 other professional wins, his 2011 Bassmaster Rookie of the Year award, or this year’s 3rd place finish for Angler of the Year Major League Fishing's Bass Pro Tour. Instead, we discussed other topics such as the YouTube series he hosts with his wife Jennie called JOJ (which stands for Jesus, Ott, Jennie), why there was no part 4 in his YouTube series of how to make a crankbait which would have covered painting the lures, and where the names for his Rapala line of crankbaits came from.

In this episode I bring you a Christmas wish list of items for those who enjoy spending time in God's creation. If you’re not a hunter or angler, don’t worry, there are things included for folks who find pleasure in experiencing nature and the outdoors in other ways too. There are items that would be a good fit for hikers, bird watchers, and people who just enjoy nature in general and even an item for the history buff.

Some of the items are things I already have and wouldn't hesitate to buy as a gift for someone, while others are things which I’ve discovered over the last few months I’d include on my wish list.

With the exception of the items sold on the Filled Quiver Outdoors website, none of the manufacturers nor retailers mentioned sponsor the show or give me kickbacks to send business their direction. <itunes:summary>

On this episode I give you a brief history of Smokey Bear. It's not the most detailed history, but it's more of the obscure details in the history of an American Icon of the outdoors. This is the episode to help you decide if the Filled Quiver Outdoors Podcast will be for you or not. I also briefly discuss some (not all) of the theological doctrines I hold as a Christian. These are the doctrines I expect to be the most commonly referenced and alluded to in future episodes. The episode ends with a brief introduction to some of the future co-hosts I'll have on the show with me which was not planned.
