After A Drop in the Bucket segment, I’ll focus on the meaty part of the episode, politics and the upcoming election. I won’t be endorsing anyone necessarily, but instead I’ll highlight two measures being voted on in different parts of the country before moving into what Christians should be doing when it comes to deciding how they vote on different measures and who they vote for to fill different positions. Instead of spending a lot of time on what the Bible says about the hot-button topics of today’s political world, I decided for this episode to just highlight some of these and put more of an emphasis on what Christians should be doing after the results are announced.

This was the first year I've ever attended an Alpha Camp with my boys, but I personally enjoyed it better than the Lads and Dads camp I've taken them to the last two years.

Once I've hit the highlights of Alpha camp I mention my recent experience with the North Carolina Heritage Trout Waters Program as a consideration to add to your bucket list during the Drop in the Bucket segment.

I wrap up the show with a short review of Smokey Bear's 80th Birthday Party at Anna Ruby Falls and ask two of my kids what their favorite and least favorite things about both Alpha Camp as well as the birthday party were.

Wade's father, Sam, came up with the One Bug in the mid-80's and since then has become an extremely popular fly to tie and use. I learned about the fly, which in turn led me to link up with Wade, through the Redeye Bartram's Bass Workshop I attended in 2023 (you can hear my review of the workshop in episode 2).

Since inheriting the fly and heritage of giving away the Sam's One Bugs, Wade has given away over fifteen thousand of these flies. Wade has put his own touch to the tradition by including the story of the Perfect Gift with each gifting of flies meaning he has shared the gospel with hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

In the conversation I ask Wade about any tips or special tools which are out there to help folks interested in tying the Sam's One Bug. One of the slogans connected to FCA Endurance is, “Why do you race?”

This question is one which always sticks out in my mind from the earliest days of my involvement with triathlon and FCA-E in particular when I was in college nearly 20 years ago now.

You get a lot of funny answers when it’s written in your kit and you pass, or get passed by, other athletes, but there’s a much deeper meaning to me. Am I racing for me or God, and how can I use my race for God?

In the grander scheme of things, it’s not just about why do you race. It’s about why do you do anything? Why do you hunt? Why do you fish? Why do you hike, or camp, or birdwatch? But don’t just stop at the why. How you can use these activities for God?

Maybe that’s pushing it or oversimplifying matters, but also falling under the umbrella of endurance athletics you find mountain biking, trail running, ultramarathon, open water swimming events, etc.  

FCA Endurance is an adult-focused arm of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and while on the surface it appears to be mostly triathletes and runners it’s open to, and includes, athletes from a wide array of endurance disciplines. Because of this, and because I’m a curious person, I created a very informal survey which anyone can take to see what other stereotypically outdoors activities endurance athletes enjoy participating in. If you want, you can still fill out that survey here. It will be available until jotforms closes it down or the maximum number of responses is received. I’ll update the results on our website periodically as I receive new results.

With hunting seasons opening, phrases like these will be increasingly spoken and posted on social media, but should they be said by Christians?
