The Great Escape - James 'Cookie' Long

We were joined by the current Commanding Officer of 9 Squadron, Wing Commander Chris Pearson, to share the story of James 'Cookie' Long. Long was a crewmate of John Shore, whose escape we covered in Episode 1 of Series 5, when they were both shot down. He would earn his nickname from his skill at brewing 'kriegie hooch', becoming a tunneller for the Great Escape, and he was to be the last of 'The Fifty' to be murdered.

The Great Escape - Michael Casey

Michael Casey became a prisoner of war very early on, and so became involved in many escape attempts, including one in which he escaped with the future Carry On actor, Peter Butterworth. For the Great Escape he was both the ‘trapfuhrer’ for tunnel Tom, and then in charge of the safeguarding of the escape contraband. Using previously unseen letters sent to his escape partner’s father, we can also reveal how he escaped, with whom, and where he was recaptured.

Shot down before his native Canada had even declared war on Germany, he was taken to meet Goering as one of the very earliest Allied servicemen to be taken prisoner of war. The Great Escape - Cyril Swain

Inspired by his uncle’s service in the Royal Flying Corp during the First World War, Cyril Swain became a pilot even before the outbreak of the Second World War. Shot down after spending some time as an instructor following an eye injury, we believe he became involved in the carpentry team for the Great Escape, helping to cut and prefabricate the bed boards used for shoring the length of the tunnel.

The Great Escape - George McGill

Having enlisted only nine days before his wedding, he bailed out after a flare exploded in the bomb bay. However, they succeeded in putting out the flames, with the plane eventually returning to base, but without McGill and three other crew mates! The Great Escape - Neville McGarr

Neville McGarr was a South African fighter pilot who overcame childhood Polio to become a pilot, and then endured a three day march across the desert with no food or water before being captured close to Allied lines. Together they were among the last to be captured, although sadly Król was to have an all too true premonition of his fate after capture.

The Great Escape - Sydney Dowse

To look at Sydney Dowse, of 1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit, we were joined by legendary Queen guitarist, Sir Brian May, and author and historian, Denis Pellerin, both of the London Stereoscopic Company.

A little known aspect of the war was the role stereoscopy played in helping us gather intelligence, and by extension, the role played by Dowse and his colleagues in the Photographic Reconnaissance Unit to gather the photographs for that stereoscopic analysis. We are therefore delighted to learn more about Dowse, his escapes, and the role his work played within the overall Allied war effort.

Erin Gregory, the Curator at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, joined us to look into the life and escape of her fellow Canadian, Gordon Kidder, who was a linguistics expert, and who teamed up with Tom Kirby-Green for the Great Escape. Erin is responsible for managing a collection of more than 8,500 objects and has curated many exhibitions at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. She is currently managing research projects that focus on women’s experiences in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the impact of aviation on northern Canada.

An often and easily overlooked, but crucially important, aspect of escaping is the provision of food. In the Great Escape, the X Committee had an entire department dedicated to providing food rations for the escapers. Our regular host, Dave Robertson, himself a former professional chef, looks into the challenges the POWs faced regarding food provision, and how they managed to overcome those challenges to ensure the escapers had enough food to sustain them on their escape attempts.

Like Basil Embry in Episode 5 of Series 3, Raymond Bailey escaped from a marching column of Prisoners-of-War making its way back to Germany, before making his way through Occupied and Unoccupied France to return to the UK.

A fascinating escape, the story of how Raymond Bailey's account was discovered is worth a listen as well!

Pte. LA Coe

Captured in Northern France in 1940, Coe was the very first to escape from a POW camp, escaping from a satellite camp in Danzig, from where he made the short escape to the port, and stowed away on a ship to Sweden.

Third Mate AH Bird

A merchant sailor, Bird is captured in the Pacific Ocean but imprisoned in Marlag und Milag Nord, the POW camp in Germany for sailors. Escaping to a nearby dockyards, Bird spends more time in the pub than escaping, before eventually stowing away on a ship bound for Sweden, where he was to stay for some time before returning to the UK.

Captured early in the war, he makes a dash for it from a moving lorry and eventually makes his way south to Gibraltar. He later released an account of his escape in his book, I Walked Alone.

Lt Alastair Cram is an escape legend, holding the record for the highest number of escape attempts in the Second World War. Captured in the North African campaign, he was a thorn in the side of his captors, spending time in a number of different camps, including the "Italian Colditz" at Gavi, before eventually succeeding in his final escape effort towards the end of the war.

Welcome to For You The War Is Over, this is a quick introduction episode to our new podcast that looks at the real life stories of POW escapes from the the Second World War.

For You The War Is Over is hosted by History Nerd @DaveMcRobbo and Tech Geek @DaveHarrysson and each episode we look at a new POW escapee and the story behind how they were captured, what their lives were like in the POW camps, how they escaped and what they did to avoid being recaptured.

Episode 1 of the podcast will be officially released next Friday 8th November and we look forward to talking to you.
