Episode 8 of Freak Wave features 60 minutes of mutant music from around the world, from Iceland, China, Brazil, Japan, Switzerland, Taiwan and Saudi Arabia.

We start our journey in Japan with a prog- tribal excursion from Japanese trio Kuunatic; and we follow it up with music from minimalist transpop and postdisco duo Hyperculte; plus Chinese experimental hardcore producer Rui Ho and Taiwanese music technologist Floating Spectrum. We also hear from MSYLMA and DJ Haram, both delivering new experimental electronics with roots in the Quran, plus new work from Brazilian producer psilosamples and Reykjavik art collective Post-dreifing.

Venturing deep into marginal music scenes from outside of the Anglo-American axis, with radical music from India, Poland, Portugal, China, Russia and Democratic Republic of Congo.

In this week’s episode we hear from Sarathy Korwar, mixing Indian hip hop with his own take on jazz and indian classical tradition; we take a cut from a new compilation which celebrates avant-garde Polish drumming; and there’s lo-fi teenage experiments from Lisbon producer Puto Tito.

Plus, Argentinean musician Barrio Lindo explores the deep and rich traditions of central and South American genres on his new album; there’s new Congolese bass music from Will’stone; and a sensational new album from Egyptian Italian duo Sea Urchin; plus music from Chinese producer Yu Su; Moscow’s Atariame; Japanese duo Group A and, from Brazil, Krapp’s Last Tapes.

Freak Wave 006 - Grup Ses, Anatolian Weapons, Harrga +

In this episode, we take in radical and divergent sounds from Greece, Turkey, Colombia, Tunisia, Tanzania, Japan, Ukraine and more. We kick off with a true contender for my album of the year 'Ofiodaimon’ - the psych-folk & synth collaboration from the Greek producer Anatolian Weapons and folk musician Seirios Savvaidis.

We then dig into Turkish producer Grup Ses, who embarks on two divergent collaborations with hip hop artist Ethnique Punch and electric saz player Elektro Hafiz; we find out what happens when Chupame El Dedo try to recreate a variety of different heavy metal genres in a Latin tropical style; and Bristolian duo Harrga bring the fire on their multi-lingual debut.

There’s also field recordings of Tanzanian ‘Mnanda’ music featuring rhythms bashed out on cheap Casio keyboards; plus new music from Ifriqiyya Electrique, Helado Negro, Ukranian experimental duo Gamardah Fungus and Japanese mavericks Kukangendai.
