If Mother’s Day left you feeling disappointed, resentful, unseen, or like everyone somehow missed the memo… this episode is for you.

I’m talking about the trap of unmet expectations — not just on Mother’s Day, but on birthdays, holidays, family days, regular Tuesdays, all of it. Because when we expect the people in our lives to magically know what we want, show up exactly how we want, and appreciate us in the exact way we were hoping for… we usually end up feeling disappointed. And then what do we want to do? Eat, numb, soothe, reward ourselves, or spiral into resentment.

So today I’m walking you through how to get your power back. Not by pretending you don’t care. Not by swallowing your feelings. Not by turning Father’s Day into revenge day. But by learning how to release the “manuals” you have for the people around you, communicate what you actually want, and take responsibility for creating the experience and feelings you want to have.

We’re also talking about why your partner is probably not a mind reader, why “if I have to ask, it doesn’t count” is not helping you, and why lowering or letting go of expectations can be one of the most freeing things you ever do.

In this episode, I’m sharing:

- Why Mother’s Day can turn into the day of unmet expectations

- How disappointment and resentment lead to emotional eating

- What “manuals” are and how they keep us stuck

- Why letting people be who they are creates more peace for YOU

- How to plan a do-over when a holiday doesn’t go the way you wanted

- Why over-communicating your ideal day is actually loving, not needy

- My “come on, compliment me” game for feeling appreciated without waiting around

- How to write yourself the appreciation letter you wanted from someone else

- Why feeling disappointed is allowed — and how to process it without eating over it

And if this hit home, please send this episode to a mom who had a crappy Mother’s Day or who tends to feel let down on holidays. Also, since Free The Moms is a brand new podcast feed, I would be so grateful if you’d take 30 seconds to leave a rating and review. Pretty please with a cherry on top.

If you want help with this work — the real root work underneath the food, the urges, the resentment, and the self-abandonment — go to lauraconley.com and book a coffee chat. We can talk about where you’re stuck, what you’re struggling with, and whether the Yummy Mummy Experience is the right fit for you. The next cohort starts in July, and we have a super fun challenge coming in June.

Hosted on Acast.

I know, I know… you shouldn’t have to ask for the Mother’s Day you actually want. But hear me out: what if asking for what you want is the whole point?

In this episode of Free The Moms, I’m talking about how to stop handing your emotional wellbeing over to your kids, your partner, your family, or any holiday that has historically left you feeling disappointed. Mother’s Day can be tender, complicated, or loaded for so many reasons—and this episode is not about forcing magic where there’s grief, strain, or heaviness. It’s about getting honest about what you want, giving yourself permission to want it, and taking your power back.

I’ll walk you through how to dream up your actual best Mother’s Day—not the obligatory version, not the “I shouldn’t want that” version, not the one where everyone magically reads your mind. The real one. Maybe that’s sleeping in. Maybe it’s brunch with your best friend. Maybe it’s a two-hour massage, a hotel night alone, flowers, handmade cards, time with your family, or zero time with your family. Anything goes.

And then comes the part most of us avoid: saying it out loud. Because our people are not mind readers. Follow-through can be romantic. Asking can still be powerful. And even if they don’t do it perfectly? You still get to decide how you want to feel.

Listen in to hear:

- Why Mother’s Day and holidays can feel so emotionally loaded

- How to create your dream Mother’s Day without guilt, obligation, or “shoulds”

- Why wanting what you want is not selfish

- How to ask clearly for flowers, cards, alone time, connection, or whatever actually matters to you

- Why your emotional wellbeing cannot depend on everyone else getting it right

- How to hold your requests lightly without giving away your joy

- Why buying yourself the damn flowers still counts

I also share about the brand-new Free The Moms website and rebrand at [lauraconley.com](http://lauraconley.com), where you can poke around, check out upcoming retreats, and book a call if you want to join the next Yummy Mummy: Lose Weight For The Last Time cohort.

If you’re in the Denver/Boulder area, I’m also hosting Mom’s Actual Mother’s Day on May 9th—a mini retreat with yoga, massage, intuitive readings, wine, and all the things moms actually want. Reach out to me at [laura@lauraconley.com](mailto:laura@lauraconley.com) or DM me on Instagram [@lauraconleycoaching](https://instagram.com/lauraconleycoaching) if you want a ticket.

And pretty, pretty please: this is a brand-new podcast feed, which means Free The Moms needs reviews! If you loved this episode, leave a five-star written review to help get this new podcast out into the world.

P.S. Lose Weight For The Last Time still exists!

I know, I know—the scale feels personal. Like it’s judging you, deciding your mood, telling you who you are that day. But hear me out: it’s not. And this episode is going to completely shift how you see it.

This one is pulled straight from my 21 Day Challenge: Lose 10 Pounds While Life Is Life—and we’re diving into one of the biggest mindset shifts that will change your weight loss journey forever. But hear me out.

If you’ve been stuck in overthinking, trying to control every outcome, or feeling like everything is on you… this episode is going to give you a different way to approach it. We’re talking about prayer as a tool for manifestation, clarity, and actually calming your nervous system so you can stop gripping so hard.

Nicole shares her daily prayer routine, how she uses gratitude and awe to shift her mindset fast, and the exact “remove it from my life” prayer that worked within 24–48 hours (multiple times). We also get into why you’re already manifesting all day—and how to start doing it on purpose.

And if you’re ready to take action:

Nicole’s Comeback Series starts April 9th—30 workouts in 60 days, plus walk & talks and quick “bare minimum” options for busy days.
